Super Bowl open thread; Update: Geaux Saints!
posted at 10:00 am on February 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Today brings an end to the NFL season with the grandest spectacle in American sports, the Super Bowl. More than a billion people around the world will be watching, perhaps as much for the commercials and the spectacle as for the game itself. However, this year the game pits the best two teams of the 2009 season, both of which threatened to go unbeaten until late in the season, in tandem breaking a record for the longest that two teams went unbeaten in the regular season. As my friend King Banaian noted yesterday, it’s the first time since 1993 that the two #1 seeds in the playoffs have met in the Super Bowl, when the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills.
Which team of destiny will cross the finish line? Let’s look at the matchups:
- Overall offense – The Colts can score, and have a good balance between the passing and running games. However, the Saints have a more explosive offense, both with the pass and the run. New Orleans gets the edge here.
- QB – Drew Brees has done a great job this year, and has been a solid QB in the NFL for years. Peyton Manning has been in the Super Bowl before and has been the best in the league for several years. His experience and talent gives Indianapolis the edge at this position.
- Defense – New Orleans has a good defense, but not a great one. The Colts’ D has been mainly overlooked this season as people focused on Manning, but they turned in a stellar performance against the Ravens the week after Baltimore rolled up over 30 points against the Patriots. The bend-but-don’t-break defense of the Colts gives Indianapolis a big edge over New Orleans.
- Special teams – The Colts do a good job on special teams, but the Saints have Reggie Bush — and Bush can burn just about anyone on kick returns. If there’s a game-changing play on special teams, it’s most likely going to be the Saints making it.
So who will win? I think this will be a good game, perhaps even as exciting as last year’s classic between Pittsburgh and Arizona. I doubt that either team will get ahead of the other by much more than a TD at any point in the game. If it’s a low-scoring game, then the Colts win it with their tough defense. If it turns into a shootout, then the Saints will have the advantage, with their deep threats and wide-open offense.
It’s tough, but I have to go with defense and the Colts. I’ll pick them to win a 24-20 squeaker. I’ll probably be pulling for the Saints, though, to win in their first-ever championship game.
Update: Congratulations, New Orleans — what a great season, and what a great game!

I’m a Steeler fan predicting 27-23 Colts but hoping for 34-24 Saints. GO SAINTS!

I hate Manning. I hate the Colts.
I will be cheering for both to beat NO – and beat them good – just so I never have to hear how the Saints have made everyone in the city smile for the first time sine Katrina.
angryed on February 7, 2010 at 10:03 AM
I’m pretty torn actually. My heart says Saints, but my head says Colts. I’ll have to go with Peyton and the Colts though. Just looking for a great game as a neutral really!
Dino64 on February 7, 2010 at 10:04 AM
This is the pre-trophy ceremony.
It is a formality that they play the game before giving the ring to Manning.
artist on February 7, 2010 at 10:06 AM
Good thing I have been ignoring the media all week. You’d think the Saints didn’t even belong in the same city as the Colts much less the same field.
That said this is going to be a shootout, but I don’t think the Colts can keep up. New Orleans has done one thing all year long better than everyone else in the league: take the ball away from the opposition. When you can get two or three takeaways (preventing them from scoring) and giving the ball back to the #1 offense in the NFL, it bodes well for New Orleans.
The Saints are the most complete team that the Colts will have faced quite likely all season long. I think they are well prepared and ready to show what they can do.
Saints 37, Colts 27

Random thoughts from a longtime Saints fan:
If the Saints can get turnovers like they got 2 weeks ago they will win.
The Saints absolutely demolished my New England Patriots. But the same Patriots almost beat Indy at Indy.
Indy’s 2009 record against NFC teams was so-so. They played the NFC West. The Saints swept the AFC East, including road wins at Buffalo and Miami. Indy played in Miami and barely won.
The Wild Card? Saints D Coach Gregg Williams. If he comes up with a good game plan, the Saints can win.
Wild Card #2-rookie head coach for the Colts.
City with the best music? No contest.
Sad to say, I think the Saints played their Super Bowl 2 weeks ago. Colts by 3. I hope I’m wrong!

I LOVE Peyton Manning. I LOVE Dallas Clark. And my new love is Austin Collie. I have to go with the Colts in heart and head. But I am too superstitious to guess a score.
Also, I am tired of the Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning debate. I want Manning to at least get one more Super Bowl win, if not two, so that question is settled. I friggin’ can’t stand the Patriots.
But I do like the Saints. I have rooted for them most of the season (not against my ‘Boys), but not this game.

I’m a diehard colts fan so I expect us to win easy. Manning is already Great. This is a chance to be Legendary.

Skandia Recluse on February 7, 2010 at 10:24 AM
I am rooting for the Colts. I prefer them as a team considering my team did not make it back to the Super Bowl this year.
However, Drew Brees seems like a good man and I didn’t like how he got the shove out of San Diego for that puss Phillip Rivers. So there is a part of me that would love to see Brees holding the Lombardi at the end while Rivers and the Chargers are home watching on tv.
myrenovations on February 7, 2010 at 10:27 AM
Colts. Unless the Saints’ defense can get their hands on Manning, then as artist says above this is a pre-ceremony formality. ;-)
Ed, you forgot a category: the X factor. Who will handle the stress and hype the best? There is so much pressure on the Saints to win and the Colts (most of the team) have done this before. Veterans do make a difference. Plus, Obama picked the Saints to win. Reverse Midas Touch will strike again.
Edge Colts.

I’m not from N.O. or even LA., but let me say this: One city is famous for great music, great food, great history and great times. The other is famous for a race that everyone now knows as: “The race other than the Daytona 500 that they run on Flag Day, or something.”

we’re having a pregame at our place. I could care less on who wins. It’s hard to get revved up for an NFL game when the main event is swirling through our country right now.
I’ll take America today by 2 touchdowns. Socialism will fumble the ball, blame it on the past coach, and finish the game covered in wee wee.

That, with the “Who dat” lawsuit, makes it more difficult to to get on their bandwagon.
NO’s D was ranked 25th, while the Colt’s were 18th. I don’t think this will be a low scoring game. It’s unknown whether Feeney will play for the Colts, too. I’m thinking turnovers will be the key here and that should favors the Saints.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but the NFC vs AFC strength debate for 2009 is complex.
Now if you want to say the Saint’s benefited from a weak NFC South, that’s fine, but it’s not like the Titans, Jaguars, and Texans were any better than the Bucs, Falcons, and Panthers.
uknowmorethanme on February 7, 2010 at 10:46 AM
Good luck to all the Colts/Saints fans.
After the Vikings expected yet deflating loss not sure if I’m in the mood to watch.
gophergirl on February 7, 2010 at 10:47 AM
Vikings turned the ball over how many times? And the Saints still had to go to OT to win, not a good sign.
freebird on February 7, 2010 at 10:48 AM
That number is doubtful, to say the least. I like American football, but over here (Europe) it’s pretty much unknown. I’d be surprised if 1% of the population of Europe knew that today was the Super bowl, much less who was playing.
madne0 on February 7, 2010 at 10:49 AM
Having spent a good deal of my mispent youth on and off a street aptly named Bourbon, in a city not too far from my home in Texas, my heart is with the Saints, all the Katrina and anti-Bush crap notwithstanding.
But my head and my money have to ride with the ponies. The defense wins Super Bowls, and the Colts are far superior in that category, with or without Freeney. And, betting against Peyton Manning and a SB experienced team when up against a first timer, albeit explosive, team is too risky.
An added benefit to a Colts win: more misery among libs in the sports and state run media, all of whom are pulling, privately at least, for the Saints.

You seem to forget that the Saints swept the AFC East this year, which included 2 teams that made the playoffs.
And as for the NFC, the Saints beat Philly in Philly. The only NFC playoff team they lost to in the NFC was to Dallas.
Del Dolemonte on February 7, 2010 at 10:57 AM
Out of the twelve teams in the running for a SB slot at the start of the playoffs, no team that I had hoped would earn one made it. My sole consolation is that the one I definitely didn’t want in the SB game lost out.
Experience counts: Colts, in a cakewalk, by 17.
ya2daup on February 7, 2010 at 11:06 AM
My two cents…Colts will win. And scoring at least in the 30s – maybe by both teams – and I would not be surprised if higher.

Exactly – it should never have gotten to overtime given how my hapless Vikings provided them fumble after fumble. If the Saints can’t play any better than that against the Colts they haven’t got a prayer.
That said, until they beat the Vikes I had been rooting for the Saints all season long. Now I really want them to get their butts kicked, but since my husband is a Louisiana native and this is huge for him, I will reluctantly root for them.
Missy on February 7, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Fair point. But the Indy team that beat the Ravens and Jets handily didn’t look like they had been playing weak opponents all year. Compare that to the Saints/Vikings game, THAT team look like a squad that doesn’t know how to put away an “inferior” opponent. Manning won’t turn the ball over twice in the red zone (like Favre) and I expect him to punish NO for their silly mistakes today.
LastRick on February 7, 2010 at 11:15 AM
I agree with Ed completely. The only difference is I’m not sure who I am rooting for. I like both teams, but I’m not passionate about either. Should be a great game!

jgapinoy on February 7, 2010 at 11:17 AM
The problem is, these two things have nothing to do with each other. I’m a lifelong Tampa fan from the Carolinas. All we see on TV is the NFC. And the NFC I watched this year didn’t prepare the Saints for Peyton.
LastRick on February 7, 2010 at 11:17 AM
From this Steelers fan:
Indianapolis has taken a close look at the tape of the Saints/Cowboys game from a few weeks ago where Dallas put a beatdown on New Orleans on both sides of the ball.
New Orleans has no similar tape of Indianapolis because the Colts have won every game they tried to win this year.

How do the Colts get the edge on D? Until both of the Saints starting corners went down mid-season, we were Top Five – everyone’s overlooking that. We’ve got both guys back and healthy. Colts are banged up and haven’t played any teams of the Saints caliber this year.
It probably will be a fairly close game, but it could be the Saints in a walk.
DrZin on February 7, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Miami weather report: Mostly sunny with temperatures rising towards the mid 60s. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Game time temperature forecast at 63 F, going to 58 F at about the end of the game. Must be nice. Last time in Miami, not 1968, but Feb 4, 2007, Colts beat Chicago in that rainy game.
churchill995 on February 7, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Ditto for me. When in doubt, root for the city with the better food, I says. The only food I’ve ever craved in Indy was the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo’s, so I’ve gotta go with New Orleans.

On the other side of the coin, the Colts’ NFC opponents this season were nowhere near the caliber of the Saints team. They played the NFC West.

On a day of such anticipation of a well-matched championship game, I didn’t want to have to say this, but the number of misguided comments denigrating our team, and by extension, our state and people, for political reasons that are not the fault of our SPORTS team or of most of the big-hearted people of the state of Louisiana, means that some of you need to think about what you have said in this thread and the messed up pre-game comments I have been greeted with during this visit to HotAir.
It’s an effing football game for football fans and has nothing to do with Hurricane Katrina and here’s what I, as someone who suffered greatly in that storm, and in the forgotten Hurricane Rita that kicked us when we were down, take away from this:
1. You are tired of hearing about how the Saints’ team, led by the inspiration and community-devoted Drew Brees, might lift the spirits of Louisianans. Because,
2. You don’t want to hear about Hurricane Katrina and some “white guilt” trip. Therefore – you don’t want the Saints to win.
3. Grammatically, this works out to “I don’t want the Saints to win because I don’t want the people of Louisiana to smile.
That’s as messed-up and convoluted and.. HEARTLESS… a line of reasoning as I’ve seen in a long time, folks. And a real crappy way to wake up and check a “Super Bowl” thread.
Let me review what we have been through down here. And since you said you don’t want the Saints to win so that you don’t have to hear it from the LSM, well then EAT IT AND SMILE, because you’re going to hear it from me.
Those two hurricanes were the closest thing to an end-of-the-world moment to hit a region since Sherman burned Georgia, excepting 9/11. Let’s hope those of you making the thoughtless comments here never have to go through the utter psychological Armageddon many of us NOT living in New Orleans faced. Massive evacuation, with no end in sight. Destruction of our homes. Babies crying on the side of the road with dirty diapers as the family car sits, hood up, with a blown radiator hose (it was hot, too), or out of gas. Yellow bags over every gas pump in a 150-mile radius. Stores stripped bare, from infant formula to Fritos. Family members out of touch, wondering if they are drowning in an attic because all the phones are down. Being prevented from bringing your boat to New Orlean to look for them. Grandmothers trapped in attics on dying cell phones, pleading for anyone to try to get to them before they died. Jonesing gang-bangers from New Orleans swarming your town with wild eyes, looking for “The Hood” and making mothers load their guns. The stench of ruined sewer systems. The sight of entire towns laid waste, as if a large bomb has gone off in every block. The mold. The toxic mud from the Murphy Oil refinery coating the walls and the family photos, borne on a 10-foot tidal wave. The acrid smell of burned Love Bugs, splattered all over the radiator until it overheated, the smoke working its way into a corner of the mind it will never leave. The knowledge that things will never be the same – an utter rip in the space-time continuum. The flashbacks – the drinking – the depression – the shakes when one sees a building under demolition in 2010 because one is transported right back into 2005, and to the daily dark knowledge that everything you know can be broken without warning and that people – even family members- can turn into animals, suddenly unrecognizable. Brother fighting brother, stranger helping stranger.
All of that – ALL OF IT is stuff that few Americans have gone through in their lives.
So now we have a football team, and we are smiling for the first time before a hurricane named Katrina became “The Bitch That Ate New Orleans.” The music is playing – the sun is shining – many cars, mine included, have become “WhoDatMobiles,” bedecked with flags and paint and beads and joy, as we go through town honking and hollering at each other. Homemade songs on the radio, made in a shed, saying, “We Believe!” A feeling of family – of the goodness that still remains in life. A sun beaming down on something good for once, maybe even bringing as bit of healing from dark days that none of us will ever fully get over. A football team and community who have suffered through 43 years of a sports-Katrina every season. Down here in Cajun country, we’re cooking – dancing – and yes, SMILING.
And not a single one of you can stop us from doing that.
WHO DAT?!

Well, I submitted a long comment but it won’t post.
Basically, the Saints and the joy we are feeling down here, after having gone through some really rough stuff, have nothing to do with politics or Bush.
If you’re going to hate our football team because you don’t want to see us smile, that’s cold. More importantly, that’s political. How about letting a hard-luck team and state enjoy this, instead of rubbing Katrina in our faces, hey?
You think YOU are sick of it – we are the ones with the terrible memories that will never go away.
Let’s have some football!
