Rasmussen: SOTU bounce dissipated

posted at 11:30 am on February 6, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

After the State of the Union speech, I exchanged e-mails with one of our best tipsters after he saw Barack Obama getting a significant boost in the polls.  I predicted that the bump would increase over the weekend polling, which tends to favor Democrats, and start retreating by the middle of last week.  In fact, the bump has been entirely dissipated, and Obama now has a -15 on the passion index and is eleven points underwater on overall approval in the Rasmussen daily tracking poll:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 26% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-one percent (41%) Strongly Disapprove which Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15. That matches the President’s ratings just before the State-of-the-Union Address. While Obama received a modest bounce in his ratings following the speech, today’s results suggest that the bounce is over …

Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. That matches the lowest level of overall approval yet measured for this president. Fifty-five percent (55%) now disapprove.

This explains why Obama likes to keep himself on TV screens.  He usually gets these kind of bumps from his major addresses, but those temporary increases now evaporate more quickly than before.  People appear to sense potential in Obama, but are less patient for him to demonstrate it than they were at his election.

Part of the problem certainly springs from the massive deficits that the Obama administration has created.  In a separate poll this week, Rasmussen shows that only 11% support deficit spending to fix the economy, while 70% believe that the federal government needs to downsize.  Obama tried to get in front of that impulse by talking about the deficit in the SOTU speech, but the announcement of a $1.6 trillion deficit in FY2010 and another $1.35 trillion in FY2011 made a mockery of Obama’s sudden deficit-hawk pose.

The internals of that poll should worry Obama and his team.  Even a plurality of Democrats believe that the US needs to cut federal spending rather than splurge even more, 47%/21%.  Republicans want to cut spending, 87%/6%, and independents are almost as adamant, 77%/6%. Even the normally safe demographics oppose Obama on his budget plans: a majority of black voters favor cuts, 58%/19%, women 68%/10%, young voters 68%/4%, and under-$20K earners 58%/14%.

It’s as close to a consensus as anything seen in American politics — and Obama is taking the opposite direction.  No wonder his approval deficit continues to grow.

I sense he has the potential to destroy the country.

I have yet to see any evidence that Obama is that worried about polls unless it affects his personal likability. It’s sort of maddening that no matter how bad his policies are, people still like the guy. President Puppy, no matter how many times he craps on the carpet, you just can’t resist those puppy eyes.

For some suicidal reason, they like the idea of plunging into the abyss.

He usually gets these kind of bumps from his major addresses, but those temporary increases now evaporate more quickly than before.

Nailed it, Ed. Noticed this on RCP recently; look at his disapproval number. Back in Septemeber, when his disapproval number began to approve, it dropped for an entire month. After Halloween, his disapproval dropped for almost two weeks before worsening. On 1/28 his disapproval improved for all of 5 days before going up again. In essence, our patience with Obama is almost done. At this rate, by the summer, he will get zero bounce from interviews, SOTU, etc.

LastRick on February 6, 2010 at 11:43 AM

It’s true. He is a President like we have never seen before. It’s like watching a train hit a car.

Smart thinking. Count on Obama to do the opposite. He really doesnt care what the people want or think. He told us in many speeches he has an agenda he intends to push, and anyone at all who objects to his agenda is hurting America.

His minions will be out in full force to echo that sentiment. If the people succeed in their quest and stop his agenda then the blame game comes into play.

Every speech, every public appearance will be used to beat his target over the head it. See Republicans, Russia,Bankers, Insurance companies,China, Germany,Iran, Doctors,France, Israel, Tea partiers,United Kingdom, Blue-dog Democrats, Canada… Typical Obama MO. Its not his plans that are unpopular, its those powerful hatemongering racist misinforming “others” who scuttled his grand schemes.

SOTU bounce dissipated

After watching a speech that contained the same endless rhetorical ramblings we’ve heard for months, how could he expect a bounce when more than half the nation is rejecting his policies of perpetual destruction? “We” elected a President that lacks the ability to understand the difference between campaigning and leading by respecting the wishes of a still center right nation. It’s a recipe for total failure.

Rovin on February 6, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Wonder if the 40%er’s who favor bigger govmint spending manage their own personal finances in that manner. Betcha they don’t. Wish sometime when a dem strategist on a Fox panel starts spouting that the govmint should spend more and more that the host would ask that question. Might get the truth out of one of them that way.

Kissmygrits on February 6, 2010 at 11:55 AM

Everything he says and does indicates that he will not back off his ideological stance. He has determined that his legacy will be radically changing America into a European-styled Socialist nation. He is confident he knows what’s “good” for us better than we do. Until he does something impeachable, we must elect those who would block him at every turn. I believe he views falling poll numbers as a sign of our ignorance and the fact the we just don’t understand his brilliant vision.

thomasaur on February 6, 2010 at 11:56 AM

This is a sign of a really dangerous condition. The electorate – and specifically that portion of the electorate which cares enough to tune in to the SOTU or at least watch news reports of it – is

a) stupid enough to be swayed by Obama’s rhetoric
b) distracted enough to forget what they were swayed by in a week’s time.

You can’t keep a republic running on fumes when it comes to discernment and intelligence among the electorate, yet that’s where we are. The only good sign I see is that fewer are swayed by Obama now than were a year ago, or even a few months ago. That number needs to decrease further.

That’s right. Because, all The Precedent really wants to do is sow chaos. He doesn’t really care about legislation or politics or government or anything like that. Frankly, those are all too complicated for his pea-brain to handle, anyway.

The Precedent is motivated by very little other than “social and economic justice”, which means ‘revenge against the US and the West’.

Bishop on February 6, 2010 at 12:05 PM

Obama is a narcissistic megalomomaniac, so we cannot expect him to change. A bump in the polls after the SOTU just feeds his narcissism, even if it is short-lived. Thus, he knows best and, as he has explicitly stated, the American people just don’t understand. To feed that narcissism his staff, like Rahm E, say that the people will learn to appreciate what Obama does after he does it. The big question is how many democrats will follow Obama off the cliff. We’ll find out in early November.

GaltBlvnAtty on February 6, 2010 at 12:06 PM

I can’t imagine why. The man is a one-trick-pony. Socialism is all he knows. All his life he’s been taught that capitalism is EVIL INCARNATE. The man will blunder from one misadventure to another until, thankfully, November 2012 will arrive.

GarandFan on February 6, 2010 at 12:06 PM

Obama is the Kamikazi President. The question is how much damage he can do as he goes down.

It’ll be better in Congress after November, but still he can do enormous damage with his executive powers alone.

I have a theory about this. I’ve been thinking about how poll numbers on his policies are in the basement, and his “personal” popularity is still amazingly positive.

I believe that a substantial number of people are just plain lying about their view of him as a person. Either they don’t want to be judged as raaaaaciiist, or by saying they like him as a person, but not his policies, they can forgive themselves for voting for the douche.

Even with less than 50% of the vote, the Dems will still win because we’re butt-stupid enough no to have learned the lesson of the ’92/’96/’00 elections.

I’m starting to be as angry with the “Tea Party as official 3rd Party” folks as I am with the Democrats. These idiots are going to squander this opportunity.

The black and red lines are close to intersecting on RCP even with the liberal biased polls included in the average. I expect more lashing out coming from the white house as Obama’s decline continues.

Have not seen that to which you refer; do you have a link?
The teaparty folks with whom I have spoken are not looking for a third party. I hope that Sarah’s speech tonight is generally supportive of finding the best Republican candidates, and then supporting the Republican candidates across the board so as to bring a quick reduction to the amount of damage Obama can do to our country.

It’s sort of maddening that no matter how bad his policies are, people still like the guy.

People tell polsters they like the guy. You know what happens to Mr. Obama’s detractors. Who wants to be called a racist?

In their heart of hearts, Mr. Obama scares the bejebers out of most Americans.

Schadenfreude on February 6, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Anecdotal story. I ran into a friend last weekend who generally has been on the fencepost about politics. He voted for McCain, but he didn’t really see a downside with Obama. I laughed to myself as he went into a profanity-laced tirade about Obama’s bright idea for high-speed rails all over the country. He’s only one person, but count him as wide awake.

As for this polling, it’ll be interesting when people begin to closely tie Obama to his policies. His personals are great, but he’ll be burnt toast once his personals begin mirroing the unpopularity of his policies. For now, if I’m reading this correctly, of the 33% on the fence about him (100 – 41 – 26), he’s splitting them in general approval/disapproval: 18%/15%. From now through Labor Day, look for the somewhat disapproves go to strong disapproves and some of the somewhat approves to somewhat disapproves.

I think his 26% strong approval is as low as he’ll go. Twelve percentage points are blacks; 14% are whites and others. He may lose another point or so from that 26%, but that’s the group that’s so heavily invested in Obama they’ll sprint off the cliff with him. I hope that the remaining 74% pull up short at the cliff, vote conservative in November, and wave as many liberal pieces of sh*t goodbye as possible.

BuckeyeSam on February 6, 2010 at 2:36 PM

It’s as close to a consensus as anything seen in American politics — and Obama is taking the opposite direction. No wonder his approval deficit continues to grow.

Obama really, truly believes that the country disapproves of his policies because he hasn’t “explained” them well, using all sorts of big words that we just don’t understand, like “corpse-men.” And he’s got idiots like Paul Krugman and Joe Klein feeding into this really bizarre belief about his policies. He’s not backing down because he just doesn’t think we understand yet. He’s searching for the right words to make us understand how awesomely awesome his brand of socialism will be. Once he finds those words, he’s certain we’ll be on board. Really.

Rational Thought on February 6, 2010 at 2:49 PM

I was about half way through this piece “Why are liberals so condescending?” and it reminded me of this conversation from the 1974 movie “Dark Star” …

Pinback: All right, bomb. Prepare to receive new orders.
Bomb#20: You are false data.
Pinback: Hmmm?
Bomb #20: Therefore I shall ignore you.
Pinback: Hello… bomb?
Bomb #20: False data can act only as a distraction. Therefore, I shall refuse to perceive.
Pinback: Hey, bomb?
Bomb #20: The only thing that exists is myself.
Pinback: Snap out of it, bomb.

Does “Bomb #20″ remind you of anybody ?

Wonder if the 40%er’s who favor bigger govmint spending manage their own personal finances in that manner. Betcha they don’t. Wish sometime when a dem strategist on a Fox panel starts spouting that the govmint should spend more and more that the host would ask that question. Might get the truth out of one of them that way.

Kissmygrits on February 6, 2010 at 11:55 AM

Most of that 40% don’t have finances to manage – - – they just wait for their next govmint check; and their free new house; and their free new car; and their free gas; and … well you get the picture.

Who the he1l are the 40% morons who like the idea of borrowing and spending to oblivion? Seriously, we are on the edge of the economic cliff looking toward the jagged rocks below and almost half the population is saying “Wow, what a great view.”

Who the hell listens to this fool and changes their approval/disapproval based on how he reads empty words from a teleprompter? He reads a speech and 5%-10% of the country has an Obama-gasm for 3 days and then comes back to reality.

That’s just weird.

Meremortal on February 6, 2010 at 5:32 PM

Somebody needs to keep track of how many speeches Obama gives during his term.

Who the hell listens to this fool and changes their approval/disapproval based on how he reads empty words from a teleprompter?

Meremortal, the same morons who listened to his campaign speeches and voted for him. Every time they hear him give a speech they think to themselves how swell he is.

It’s facts like this that tend to make me think that:

a. He’s an idiot
b. He doesn’t care what the people want
c. Someone else is running things (tinfoil hat time?)

tru2tx on February 6, 2010 at 11:41 AM

As for A) He’s making George W look like a Harvard MBA
As for B) Considering the people who taught him and brought him up (Ayers, Alinky and Davis), he probably does not.
As for C) Who? Axelrod? Emanuel?

IowaWoman on February 6, 2010 at 6:02 PM

Here are some tough facts I read a couple of days ago.

The administration’s budget has a $1.35 trillion deficit. That includes revenue from the non-existent health care tax and cap and trade. It also assumes 4-5% growth and lower unemployment. So, let’s just say the “real” number is going to be somewhere around $1.6 trillion (cut him some slack).

The Treasury has $2 trillion of short-term debt coming due this year that must be rolled over. Russia no longer buys our debt. India no longer buys our debt. China is starting to make noises that their plate is full.

A month or so ago, I read an article (conspiracy theory?) that the government would have to crash the market to scare people out and build demand for the big Treasury auction that was to take place towards the end of Feburary. Right now, it doesn’t look like a far-fetched conspiracy theory.

Over the next 12 months, the Treasury has to sell $3.6 trillion worth of notes to avoid national bankruptcy. The only other way out is obviously to fire up the printing presses.

As the man said, “I have seen the future and it doesn’t work”. Our options are bankruptcy (default on debt), inflation, much higher interest rates or some combination.

Congress will look very different a year from now. Unfortunately, so will the world around us.
