You guys don’t find it a bit hypocritical to chastise The One for using a teleprompter, but giving Palin a “so what?” for cribbing notes on her hand?

Really?

JetBoy on February 7, 2010 at 8:37 AM

Jetboy! Come on man that is weak. It is one thing to refer to notes in your hand as you deliver a 45 minute speech while you look back up at your audience to deliver it. It is quite another to glance back and forth at teleprompter screens reading an entire speech that has been written out for you and never looking at your audience.

And care to place any bets on who writes whos speeches?

conservnut on February 7, 2010 at 9:44 AM

I think I love America more than a few liberal Americans do. Even though Australia will always be #1 I am concerned with where America and Australia are headed under Obama and Rudd respectively.

Debt is both of our nations biggest problem and under Obamas and Rudds financial stewardship it is only getting worse.

Crux Australis on February 7, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Now, if she ‘wrote the notes during the speech’, the Left would be able to claim such and have ‘evidence’ of her writing at the time. But that would trash a lot of the ‘argument’ about crib notes.

Liam on February 7, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Liam on February 7, 2010 at 9:40 AM

You’re missing the point! To have a few words (or “crib notes”) is not the same thing as having an entire speech written out for you on a teleprompter. Stop digging!

Buy Danish on February 7, 2010 at 9:48 AM

And care to place any bets on who writes whos speeches?

I thought Sarah pulled together the threads that weave Teaparty and GOP today.

That’s actually leadership. She’s doing it much better than any of the other GOP types right now.

kingsjester on February 7, 2010 at 9:50 AM

Well, you Crux, Sarah Palin IS the Devil Incarnate.
All rational deep thinking people concur with that analysis, don’t you know?

She’s a slimy phony, lying, b—-. She hates her children and can’t put 3 words together, and I’m not positive, but there’s a nasty rumor floating around the internetz that she even hates puppies.. I know. Disgusting wretched, well I would say human, but I’m not even sure she qualifies, really.
You have to have a soul to be human and I got it on good authority from DU she actually has no soul.

It’s true. She might even be the most evil being who’s ever lived.
Like the immortal line from Austin Powers was: Lies…ALL LIES!!!

Thank God we have the genius in the white house. He’s so far ahead of us all that he’s started a new military phrase “corpse-man”. Innovative that man is.

Ooh! Ooh! Can i help Grow Fins answer the question???
How about Ben Nelson?? Oh, wait, he sold out his pro-life principles for thirty pieces of silver or something.
Also since he’s going to get his keister kicked down the road, I guess he doesn’t even qualify for the “prominent” part of the equation.

darwin on February 7, 2010 at 9:51 AM

I only watched the speech, so I’m not sure what the silly debate is about here; but she has definitely nailed the concerns of many people, including Independents.

Speech delivery is alway interesting. You watch a teleprompter speech, the person has to adopt a chin-thrust stance that quickly becomes a “pose.” You refer to your notes, you’re looking down to much. You talk too much without notes or teleprompter, you can easily look overly glib and over-rehearsed. Worse, you can really flub it.

Probably the trick to switch the techniques around so nobody can completely predict what type of style will be used from day-to-day.

But, that’s just a PR style issue. The real meat and potatoes part of her speech was honestly terrific. She elevated this convention to a new level.

Kudos to Sarah.

Gotta love the True Conservatives claiming Scott Brown as one of their own. He’s pro-choice, he voted for Romneycare, and he’s in favor of national health care. He just thinks the current bill is an expensive piece of crap so that’s what he campaigned on.

If you True Conservatives stop delusionally building every politician up to be The Ultimate Righty, you won’t be so disappointed later. A lot of people here are like the crazy possessive boyfriend who turns into the deranged stalker after the relationship is over.

Grow Fins on February 7, 2010 at 9:53 AM

so you’re claiming its not?

viviliberoomuori on February 7, 2010 at 9:54 AM

Sarah Palin means everything she says and speaks with conviction. About 95% of what comes out of Obamas mouth is a lie or distortion or parsing of words or merely a temporary feel good line that suits whatever current audience he’s speaking in front of. An close examination of all the words he’s uttered reveals a horriby inconsistent person. the only unwavering beliefs he has are anticapitalism and that America was an evil force in the world before he came along.

exceller on February 7, 2010 at 9:54 AM

I had only ONE issue with her in the entire speech, and that was the overstatement on Right to Life. However, it was expected. She did, after all, make that stand absolutely clear when her first speech out of the gate was to Right to Lifers.

Other than that one policy issue, I agreed with everything else said.

That’s honestly not too bad, in terms of political agreement.

AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 9:54 AM

so you’re claiming its not?

Yes. Her glances into her hand would indicate so.

I think that’s evidence that conservatives aren’t ideologues. MA is a true, true blue, blue state. He won.

Nobody can take that away from him. I personally think every state has its quirks. No national agenda should be any kind of purity test, and nobody gets to tell people in their own states what the “real” issues should be.

Balance is the answer.

AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Dark-Star on February 7, 2010 at 9:46 AM

Look fool. Your response to my statement that Palin is not being worshiped by her supporters was to highlight that she is a prominent figure in the conservative movement.

I’m not sure why this has to be explained but I apparently gave you more credit for having common sense than was due:

1. Being a prominent political figure != being worshiped like a cult figure.

2. The fact that Palin supporters don’t flee in droves when another insipid nontroversy comes up is that the nontroversies are irrelevant to the cause…and that is the common sense conservative values we all relate to and respect and want to see more of in politics.

All the nontroversies prove is that there are people out there who are desperate to use ANYTHING to try to tear her down. The irony is…these attacks only highlight how pathetic the attacks are and how durable she is…or more importantly, her message.

So we see you and people like you write stuff like “Palin supporters aren’t jumping ship when we have screencaps of her with words on her hand! They must be cultists!111!!” and we see you as looking fairly buffoonish.

Just sayin.’

viviliberoomuori on February 7, 2010 at 10:02 AM

I don’t care if Obama uses a teleprompter. I always thought that criticism was petty.

What I find fascinating about Obama was how the message changes. He’s the most inconsistent president in my entire lifetime.

I am always struck by that. I know we always talked about Madison Avenue presidents. I certainly accused him more than once of being the Kennedy “president in the pocket” of Dem insiders.

But I could never have predicted just how much he’d turn out to be just that.

His messages are all over the map. Just no center.

Sarah, on the other hand, is the same message as in her election campaign.

Amazing difference in message content.

I’m super-glad for the Teaparty convention, too. It took a beating from other Teaparty organizers in the press. Does anyone have a link to the “response” promised from critics?

I’d suggest they cancel that press conference. *haha

This “convention” did achieve the goal. It simply brought together people and let them talk and dish. That’s always what a good convention is about. The best types of group meetings I’ve ever gone to were similar. A bit of structure, but mostly just an opportunity to meet people with similar goals and then exchange ideas.

I attended a teaparty in CA, and it was focused on state tax and state debt issues.

I’ve always known that the teaparty movement isn’t some wild-eyed bunch of loons.

Nice people. Just as she said.

Frankly, what was fascinating is that most were city workers, such as firemen, who probably personally benefited from the stimulus, etc.

I figured their family members probably were small business people, however.

Anyway, I’ve always been a big teaparty defender. It’s been mischaracterized by both the liberals and the regular GOP.

That’s a big political mistake in my opinion.

lovingmyUSA on February 7, 2010 at 4:30 AM

Thank you for allowing me to bring it up again. You don’t need to cry. AxlWrod’s [sic] talking point has a bit of validity. I note that Obama’s winning Obamateurism is the use of the word “corpseman” when far more substantive faux pas are present for this week (the slap in Spain’s face being far more serious). That says to me that appearance is perhaps equally important as substance when evaluating performance, particularly on the domestic front.

Those Tea Party Nation [TM] idiots have done quite a bit of damage by allowing their opponents to paint this movement as anti-patriotic. Just the tiniest attention to detail would have prevented that — attention they couldn’t bring to bear as they looked for ways to keep every dollar they got.

AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 10:19 AM

Just got caught up on this whole deal as I took the day off from politics yesterday.

“We need a commander in chief standing behind that lectrun, not a professor of law.”

Most awesome quote ever. This is the type of leadership for America I am all about. We need folks like this right here right now, not talking about 2012 but talking about current events and this years election. Calling out this pathetic liberal party as they should be called out. We don’t have leaders in Washington right now, we have what appears to be some sort of sad reality tv show. Obama fails because he cannot lead. His policies do not pass because he cannot lead. I betcha someone like Sarah could get some policies in place.

gator70 on February 7, 2010 at 10:20 AM

Here we go, with more of that liberal ‘you’re a hypocrite’ thing. It’s almost comedy, that when a leftie accuses a con of hypocrisy, the lib thinks he/she is somehow absolved or innocent of his/her own sins. Or, of the policies they hold to.

The biggest problem cons have with libs isn’t their (the liberal) nonsense, but the nonsense they (libs) indulge to hold to their policies.

Were I to agree with a lib on anything, I can picture another lib calling me a hypocrite for it. It’s their way, the only one they know.

And I bet that photoshop of the youtube video is nice and clear.

There is no evidence. I sat down and watched it twice and there is no “THERE” there.

The only time I saw her noticeable look down, was during a Q&A. It’s unlikely that she had the questions beforehand, so what would she have been referring to by looking down. Also the question was on a topic that she knows very well- energy. So why would she need notes?

If she comes out in the affirmative, then I’ll believe you. But any digital “evidence” is about as convincing as all the Obama birth certificates floating around. I expect this to get play in blog land, and probably MSNBC (only because they have nothing left to lose).

xax on February 7, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Oh, I had one other criticism. I thought the HC didn’t really hit my concerns enough. It’s not all about free market and tort reform.

I think the public absolutely needs portability in this day and age and the pre-existing conditions/purging must be addressed. HOW we get there? That’s up for debate.

But people need something other than COBRA, which they cannot even afford.

My other interest is in the issue of giving the Christmas bomber rights. The fact is that he’s talking again. And the administration really did make points by reminding the public that it was the faith in our system that brought his family forward to convince him to talk. That was a powerful story.

Now, is it truthful? We’ll see what emerges. But it’s a question.

I’ve never been a huge Palin fan, I’m just sick of the outright lies, when I can see with my own eyes that the lies are just that. Lies. “Cultish”??? WTF? you sound like the guy accusing me of being a Jihadi because he couldn’t understand my italian S/N the other day.

viviliberoomuori on February 7, 2010 at 10:26 AM

It’s hard to make arguments on these threads without taking faceshots. It’s a lot more brutal around here than when this blog first opened up.

gator70 on February 7, 2010 at 10:21 AM

I’m a huge believer that she has to get comfortable with the actual issues. I noticed that when it came to energy, she didn’t even glance at her notes. That’s her forte, and it’s an admirable one in this day and age.

I’ve been personally waiting to see if she’d “rise” to the challenge. What’s fascinating to me? She did and didn’t, and it works even better than what I’d have recommended. In my mind, I’d have had her practice and deliver that speech flawlessly.

I think this was actually more effective. It’s more real.

AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 10:28 AM

I just can’t get over how humble she is. She has many reasons to be full of herself.

That also shows what kind of company she keeps, too.
When the crowd chanted “Run Sarah” she looked down at her feet. That shows humility. Something Obama wouldn’t understand.

B Man on February 7, 2010 at 10:28 AM

Very good speech. She needs to get more gigs standing at the podium so she can become more comfortable with it. Now, if only she had worked the word “corpse-man” into her speech somehow in a mocking way when speaking of our kôr′mən–would have been hilariously epic.

RepubChica on February 7, 2010 at 10:21 AM

And then, they hit a tipping point, where you can’t stand to hear one more campaign speech, too.

Ebb and flow.

Unfortunately these dunces manage to make the entire tea party movement a laughingstock. It is so easy to discredit the HuffPo analysis of this, but noooooh, they have to wander off into the land of looney tunes and manage to do the impossible: Make the doltish Grow Fins look clever.

Her detractors are always beside themselves after she delivers a good speech. I would rather have her than the petulant President.

Your turn, Mr. Fins.

I’m all for letting the media outlets do their own investigation on what might or might not have been there. I’m satisfied, for now, there was nothing.

Depending on how big the media want to make this matter of crib notes, it’s a fair question to ask Sarah herself if the time comes.

The media’s own cameras, from their own people, will prove the matter either way. I, for one, am content to wait before making a rock-solid decision. For now, I’m persuaded there were no notes.

Liam on February 7, 2010 at 10:31 AM

It’s not bad enought that we have to deal with “Birthers”, we now have to respond to proud members of the ever growing 2/7 Truther movement. Did they “photo shop” her handwriting too, or is that the handwriting of the alleged photoshopper? Do we need Palin’s office to issue a statement on this, or will you concede how stupid this is before you embarrass her any further?

Buy Danish on February 7, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Just don’t deal with them. There are still people who don’t believe we’ve ever landed on the moon.

The fact is that every single accusation does NOT need to be addressed. Obama is making an issue out of this to pretend that teaparty backers are birthers. That’s untrue.

I personally think that birthers/truthers are people with a bit of OCD who get caught up in conspiracy theories and can’t let go.

It’s not a big deal. At this point? We don’t need to vet Obama. We now have a year of information and a year of evidence. We can “get” him.

AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 10:32 AM

OT: I just watched the Cuda’s interview on Wallance’s Fox News Sunday.

I thought she did quite well. She’s a real American; Obama is not.

BuckeyeSam on February 7, 2010 at 10:33 AM

Nobody thinks Scott Brown is the ultimate conservative. But he is the ultimate electable New England conservative. The fact that he draws the utter hatred of the Left says more about his character than being pro-life or pro-choice does.

HP has invested heavily in a blog that smears Palin 24-7. But did you catch the Meet the Press last Sunday?

Ailes really put AH down in a kind way, and she so reacted that it was funny.

She’s a smear merchant, nothing more.

I have been busy the last couple of days and have not watched any of the coverage of this thing. But I do think a lot of people are getting tired of Obama. My fear is that some conservatives will try to go too far the other way. I honestly think people are tired of extremes, they want some sane common sense answers to problems. They do not want to get rid of all the social programs, nor do they want to grow government any bigger than it is.

It sounds “cultish” to defend someone using incredible conspiracy theories! The cherry on the ice cream sundae? She doesn’t even need defending in the first place! She wrote a few words on her hand. So what?!

I’m about ready to quote Rahm Emanuel to describe this abject stupidity.

Maybe that will emerge.

The burden of proof is on them. Just looking at the hand doesn’t prove that something was written on it.
Here’s your proof.

Terrye on February 7, 2010 at 10:44 AM

Sarah really, really racked up negative points with the Couric interview.

I figured it would take many contacts with the public to undo that.

What’s impressive? She is absolutely going to get that opportunity. In real life? You goof, you never get that chance. It could be unfair as heck, but that doesn’t matter. Nobody ever interviewed Dan Quayle again, except to reinforce the stereotype story.

She’s already broken out of that problem.

And this move, predicted by the GOP to be a flop, proves that the insiders still really need to listen to people more. The GOP did absolutely everything to blow up this convention, and here it is, the talk of the town.

I thought she was extremely gracious about Brown. It wasn’t some ideological difference talk. And they do differ.

It was generous. And she’s being very generous to McCain, who really hasn’t been good to her.

I respect that. I think she’s earning their respect, too.

Not to mention she’s a spoiled, yacht-hopping, pill-popping lush prima-donna who somehow managed to turn a straight man into a homosexual during the course of their marriage.

These are the kind of people they put on a pedestal while knocking hard-working, boot-strapping, make-my-own-way-in the-world, fiercely Independent family-oreinted women like Sarah P. down.

Proof that liberalism is a mental illness worthy of its own entry into the DSM.

RepubChica on February 7, 2010 at 10:49 AM

Sarah is doing us all a big favor. She is helping to reset the agenda for the entire country. Obama has lost control of the message. Sarah isn’t leading the movement however. She’s more like a cowboy trying to guide a stampede. But, I don’t care if she isn’t perfect, I love her willingness to piss in Obama’s Cheerios. Go Sarah, Go!
