I’m actually amazed.
Sarah managed to pack an entire speech onto one side of one hand (less than one side if you count the fact that one word of the seven there was crossed out), and only had to look down once. Contrast that with our President, who needs two semi-silvered panels placed at eye height on either side, and about $10K worth of hardware to operate same, and always looks like he isn’t looking you in the eye as he tries to read his entire speech off of self-same semi-silvered panels.
I didn’t notice Sarah’s hand scrolling so fast that she lost her location in her speech. I didn’t notice any strangely accented words (like corpseman). I didn’t notice her accidentally congratulating herself when her hand stopped moving.
In short, much to do about nothing.
And, so nobody else needs to drive up the readership at Huffpost, here are the words on her hand:
I wish I could do a speech like she did with only seven words written on my hand…
unclesmrgol on February 7, 2010 at 10:52 AM
it sounds even more cultish to agree with growfins, without realizing that the accusations went on all night with no proof, until 9am this morning. My insomnia had me up all night, watching this unfold. No proof until the morning. Then look at any video of the speech. It’s not “conspiracy theory” it’s a simple fact. The only place that shows the “indisputable truth” is a website known for slandering palin. Getting pissed about outright lies, when I can see with my own eyes, is not “theory”. It is FACT.
viviliberoomuori on February 7, 2010 at 10:53 AM
Last night was an unalloyed triumph for Palin.
The efforts of bottom feeders like Oliver Willis to create a faux scandal to distract from Palin’s speech would be humorous were it not so pathetic. People like Willis are the outriders of Obama’s socialist enterprise, and they do this kind of intellectual car battery theft because they know they are failing.
Like Arianna’s dying blog, for example. Or Kos, which is losing the relevance it once enjoyed.
Every day Obama grows weaker. Every day Palin is out in the country, she grows stronger. They know this, and it kills them inside.
victor82 on February 7, 2010 at 10:53 AM
Better — try telling that to the new owner of the Kennedy seat.
unclesmrgol on February 7, 2010 at 10:56 AM
I’m not sure why it would make a difference it there were.
Back in my career days I had presented speeches in front of an audience of over three hundred of my peers twice. Many times smaller groups of fellow professionals, and training videos also. The most difficult was testimony in front of a hostile crowd.
I used outlines, crib notes AND a message on my hand, to myself. It said “slow down, you are the expert, they are the listeners”.
In the interest of full disclosure for this discussion I would like GROWFINS to tell us what the largest public audience is that he/she has ever made a presentation before. (truth please).
To the rest of the speech detractors: perhaps they could also tell us how many speeches they have given to sizable audiences, and what support notes, outlines, or other aides they did or did not use.
Yoop on February 7, 2010 at 10:57 AM
Her National Enquirer approach has really been successful. I think we’ll see a shift.
So far, she’s tried to shift by increasing moderation. That’s reached a tipping point.
Next will be the headlines, which really are funny and provocative. She’s turned Palin headlines, for example, into 5000 posts regularly, and they are nothing but unvetted stories by that mudflats blog, which obviously is a cottage industry blog to smear Palin.
It’ll be interesting to watch, because she really does have a conviction against Geithner, too. She wants all of us to pull out our money from big banks. In other words, there’s a funny intersection between her and teapartiers.
She really, really tried to undermind Palin before this speech. She ran big stories, based on zip, but she gave it top billing. And she went on air on Palin’s remarks over the Rahm BS.
My own take? AH isn’t stupid. When this doesn’t work, she’ll drop that tactic.
And it’s not working.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 10:59 AM
He’s Vote 41 against Obamacare too. Sadly, you point out the issue with being a “Scott Brown Republican” — the CARE package which arrived doesn’t contain everything you’d like, but it does contain quite a bit of what you need.
unclesmrgol on February 7, 2010 at 11:01 AM
I read it as sheer, unadulterated panic. Their “HOPE AND CHANGE” gambit has been a highly visible failure. They fear the citizen’s answer. “WE THE PEOPLE” never figured into their plans.
Yoop on February 7, 2010 at 11:02 AM
AH always seems sober to me.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:03 AM
AH should not be discounted. If there was a blog that made me sit up and think twice about my automatic Dem voting, it was her blog.
I watched closely. As she backed Obama over Hillary in the primary, I watched how the stories were constantly anti-Hillary, revving up the Moveon.org types.
Meanwhile, Obama was out campaigning for Afghanastan, while saying Hillary was the war-monger.
It was fascinating.
AH had a great deal to do with Obama’s election. And yet she’s turned on him like a snake. She can’t stand Geithner. She’s been on a tear to the point that it’s absurd.
And, of course, she’s run every smear story against Palin that even remotely would generate interest. Unvetted blog stories welcome!
And those always get the most hits, regardless of what her lead story is.
At this point, I’d say her blog is in “disarray.” Progressives are upset. Liberals don’t fit in.
It’s very dysfunctional, but still heavy on traffic.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:09 AM
That’s because Chianti has become a permanent part of her DNA.
RepubChica on February 7, 2010 at 11:10 AM
The lefties posting here have been trying all night to draw an equivalence between a few notes on the palm in one speech with all the use of teleprompters by their guy in the White House. In other words, BHO can’t be criticized any more on that. And, we’re all now ‘hypocrites’ for doing it in the first place!
Typical liberal tactics, trying to ‘level the playing field’, as it were. Plus the tactic, if accepted, draws away from the importance of Palin’s speech and the value of what she said.
It’s just a methodology and no more, like in a discussion about abortion the other day, a lib piped about about the babies killed in Afghanistan by American bombs–as if accidental losses are the same as walking into a clinic.
I also saw, that when videos gave a clear shot of the alleged inked palm to show there was no ink, a liberal said the video was of poor quality. So it’s the fault of something other than the person’s pre-determined belief that there’s nothing to back the claim.
Another lib tactic. And I have yet to read a liberal backing me on the idea to let the media prove this silly little matter either way.
I’m not concerned about a few notes, though I have yet to see in neutral video postings of the speech actual evidence they are/were there. I also don’t care about teleprompters, though an inability to use them more effectively, shall we say, looks really bad. And I’d say the same for a Pub who appeared the same way.

Fletch54 on February 7, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Nobody would be criticizing her for using notecards to give a speech. It is the writing on her body part that makes her look dumb. If you can’t understand this, theres really no point in repeating myself.
Speedwagon82 on February 7, 2010 at 11:19 AM
The point about the telepromter is that Obama hems and haws and stammers without one, making him sound like an idiot.
But, to the dingbat left, it is proof that he is “thoughtful”.
Really Right on February 7, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Gee, is there a post here that can illustrate my point about ignoring detracters more than yours?
LOL*
I post that it was a great speech, and this is your response.
Way to build bridges. *haha
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:22 AM
At least I didn’t have to write notes on my hand. She’s thinking of running for POTUS and she can’t remember her priorities. Notes to self. Must remember this one: “Lift American spirits.” What a dummy.
Grow Fins on February 7, 2010 at 11:23 AM
I have to admit. I prefer the teleprompter to looking down constantly.
Jokes or no.
It’s annoying to constantly have to wait for them to find their place from notes.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:23 AM
That makes no sense. *Fighting recurring impulse to quote Rahm* I’m not “agreeing with Grow Fins”! I’m accepting the probability that she wrote a few words on her hand. BFD! My original response to Grow Fins is unchanged: Where’s the invisible ink for her to “crib” from for the rest of her speech and subsequent Q&A?
Buy Danish on February 7, 2010 at 11:25 AM
lol … well, Obama can’t even remember his religion. I’ll take someone who has to jot down a last minute reminder over some clown who can’t even remember what deity he supposedly worships.
darwin on February 7, 2010 at 11:27 AM
The thing about Palin is that the opposition really has never had anything but the lamest of stories.
Prior to the speech, the “big” story was how she failed to pay taxes on some cabins in Alaska.
I read the story, read the response from her lawyer, read the remarks from the Alaskan official…..and easily concluded that this was a non-story.
Over and over, that’s been the case with Palin. She looked good, her clothes must mean she’s out shopping like mad, truth comes out, no, she actually had to be “fooled” out of wearing the expensive clothes.
Over and over, the stories turn out to be exhibitions of a smear campaign.
The opposition could deal with her on issues. She’s actually vulnerable there.
But they choose to attack her personally. Why?
Sexism. They still think that’s going to work better.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:28 AM
I would love to see those notes. I’ll bet they are just bullet sentences and not a full out written text.
You don’t need a word for word document when you are talking about what you believe in. Just need something so you don’t missing desired points you want to express.
Obama needs written text and to stay on script to prevent him from telling America what he really believes in.
Hog Wild on February 7, 2010 at 11:28 AM
A return to and reaffirmation of the founding principles in the Constitution.
Sarah Palin put in a good word for Amendment X, which supports the idea that the strength our our nation lies in its states, not in a command-control (out-of-control, unaccountable) federal government.
Palin also made the point that federal “endowments” come with serious price tags: They indebt future generations. They cede control of major state decisions to the federal government in a one-size-fits-all straightjacket. They bankrupt a state when the fountain of federal “benevolence” dries up.
onlineanalyst on February 7, 2010 at 11:28 AM
Ah, nothing like a pro-American, pro-family, pro-life, unapologetic speech by a strong, beautiful woman to get all the bedwetters bladders quivering.
Guess that strong talk about national defense, fighting our enemies, realistic approach to energy policy, and general optimism for the future is SO DAMN OFFENSIVE.
SO DAMN OFFEN

Am I the only person who doesn’t care what someone uses for a speech, be it a teleprompter, notes, etc?
Am I the only person who actually listens to what is being said?
With that…Sarah Palin actually made sense. Did not contradict herself, ever.
When I listen to Obama, I come away confused and empty. He talks out of both sides of his mouth and I don’t care if he uses a prompter or speaks from his own mind. I still hardly know what the heck he wants. I only get that he likes more, bigger government.
How a speech is delivered is so unimportant to me.
I could listen to GWBush and giggle at him sometimes making mistakes, but I still would come away with a solid idea of what the heck he was saying.
Obama…not so much.
bridgetown on February 7, 2010 at 11:30 AM
I’m suggesting Barry needs to use his hands for speech props too. He can scrawl “hope” on one hand and “change” on the other and hold them up for the audience to read every few minutes.
He can also scrawl “me” “good”; “yes we” “can”:
And subliminal messages; There are endless possibilities.
He could sell his palm space for commercials!
Cybergeezer on February 7, 2010 at 11:31 AM
How about having a teleprompter for a meeting? If you need a teleprompter for a meeting, you are a bigger dummy.
rbj on February 7, 2010 at 11:32 AM
Why are growbrains and the libtards making an issue of whether SP had notes written on her hand when it’s plain that she took the stage with a stack of notes? It’s clear to see her flipping pages as she progressed thru her speech.
The difference between her delivery and Obambi’s is that she uses it as an aid, while he has to read his speeches word for word, and whenever he goes off TOTUS, everyone knows it.
Again, SP uses notes and this is an issue? Talk about scrapping the bottom of the slime barrel.

LMFAO at trying to establish ‘Handaquiddick’ narrative/meme.

Frankly, everyone in America needs to understand this basic truth.
Speechwriters exist.
They actually do write speeches.
They are really good at their job.
Get over it.
AnninCA on February 7, 2010 at 11:35 AM
Notes, teleprompter, outlines, slide presentation or off-the-cuff? What supported you presentation?
Question to GrowFins: I was considered one of the few experienced experts in a certain kind of knowledge of a certain kind of geologic process and deposit. I used a prompter/reminder note all the time that I printed on my hand with a magic marker. Did that make me any less the expert in my subject?

Yea! Isn’t that amazing? And did you know that there is even a college class known as “Public Speaking”? Just; Wow!
Cybergeezer on February 7, 2010 at 11:43 AM
Her topics, as she expressed them according to conservative values, are gaining wider appeal. Were she speaking only to the political Right, she wouldn’t carry so much weight. But as independents lean more and more to conservatism, a true political threat exists to those who hold liberal beliefs.
No political movement can solve all the world’s problems, like Leftists believe theirs can. Conservatism wants people to be free to make opportunities for themselves, only after which those problems can be fully addressed. Since libs truly believe conservatism is illegitimate, but still can’t stop its appeal, they’re left with only attacks on the person(s) making our case to the public.

AH_C on February 7, 2010 at 11:49 AM
I’d agree with you except that I don’t consider anything from HuffPo to constitute credible evidence. In the absence of credible evidence, it becomes a fabrication to smear her, a continuation of the same derangement that the libnuts have employed to smear and denounce her since she was announced as McCain’s running mate. And by the way, I’m not a Palinnut, either.
By the way, in the video clip Ordinary 1 has posted, there’s an excellent shot of the palm of her left hand at 2:01. There doesn’t seem to be anything written on it. I’d like to know how HuffPo got such a high resolution image.
ProfessorMiao on February 7, 2010 at 11:50 AM
Slightly OT:
Been there, did that class, back about the time the last continental glacier receded.
Nothing prepared me for, and improved my efforts in, public speaking like four years as a member of Toastmasters, International.
Nothing like having a timed two minutes to prepare for a timed five minute speech about a subject you just randomly pulled out of a hat on slips prepared by the other members. Good training.

Why can’t Barry sit down and take questions after his speeches like Sarah did? Because he can’t do anything on his own unless it’s scripted… Plant a few questions, deliver the canned response.
Apparent since he hasn’t had a news Q&A since…? (Long Time)
WhoU4 on February 7, 2010 at 11:59 AM
So Sarah Palin had “Lift American Spirits” written on her palm while giving a speech.
Barack Obama has “God D**m America” written on his soul.

I’m pretty sure something in that just has to be racist, but damned if I can find it. ;-)
Yoop on February 7, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Doesn’t that strike as a bizarre thing to write on her palm, assuming she wrote anything at all? Doesn’t it seem the least bit cynical, something someone with an ax to grind would put there if faking evidence? Would Palin really need to remind herself to ‘lift American spirits’ or be so narcissistic to think that’s her job?
Liam on February 7, 2010 at 12:11 PM
You just gave the state run media their lead story for next week; They’ll insinuate that it originated from Rush Limbaugh.

I’m sure she will say some classless stuff against police and always play the sexist card when attacked.

Not dumb. More honest than most of the teleprompter phonies who read speeches written by others
Gettysburg address
There are many different transcripts of the speech, because Lincoln made many changes. People still argue about which transcript represents what Lincoln spoke that day
This tangled record of the exact words of that address suggest Lincoln may have worked some fine differences into his language as it was delivered
Simple sincerity it much appreciated in this days as it was then. The concepts were simple, but grand and they stand above vocabulary or presentation.
Among the group seeking a straight talker, Palin gains points, just like Brown gained points for driving around his state in a pickup instead of a limo

Glad to see we are interested in the important issues here, like notes on hands and teleprompters. My favorite lib post on Palin’s speech is the jab that it was just “talking points.” Producing talking points is the purpose of speech and I much prefer talking points to pointless talking.
It is no surprise that leftys can’t stand Palin, she is a righty. What is interesting is that leftys rarely take on her core beliefs but rather her supposed imperfections in intelligence and experience. I love to see this agreement between Palin and Obama:
Palin releases all her education, birth and medical records and Obama does the same. I’m not scared, are you leftys OK with the idea?

rjl1999 on February 7, 2010 at 4:30 PM
So the libs are trying to change the story on Palin’s speech to make it all about what type of notes she may or may not have used in the speech?
here is a head’s up on the teleprompter thingie. Hotels charge a FORTUNE for AV equipment. I used to give a LOT of speeches in front of groups, anywhere from 50 to one time I was in the old Dallas Mavericks arena and gave a speech to 15,000 people (that one was only 10 minutes, though, my others were usually 40 minute lectures or 3 hour workshops). Hotels also charge a fortune for dinner banquets. I am sure a teleprompter would have broken the bank at that convention and the ticket prices were already pretty high as it were. Sarah had a pile of pages that she took to the podium. Whether it was the full speech written out or just bullet points, who cares? Since we knew she had pages on the podium, what does it matter if she did or did not have anything written on her hands. That doesn’t make sense to me.
I found it very much easier to use bullet points in large font on pages and then speak the paragraphs on the bullet point topic without a scripted prose written down, when I gave speeches. I think Sarah did that last night. Sometimes it is easy to go off on a slight tangent and then have to snap back to the points you want to make. I think I saw that maybe a couple of times in 45 minutes. With her passion on what is going on in America, I bet she could have given that speech over 3 hours, we just go the cliff’s notes because it was supposed to be 45 minutes.
The left can’t stand that not only did she hit the ball out of the park last night, she had substance, she slayed O’s policies, slayed Joe on “transparency”, and she had hundreds of media people there covering her speech.
When have we had a “losing” VP nominee the year after the election command that much national attention AND have growing popularity at the same time? I can’t remember that in my lifetime.
They hate her because she is so effective and they know it.
You go girl, The cuda rocks!!

Moreover, beneath the AP logo, one can clearly see scribbling. Some of you are using “screenshots” in a silly attempt to prove some vast conspiracy, even though a screenshot is of reduced resolution from a photo.

Palin was on fire. I was standing near the left speakers near the stage.
I handed off my folded up 3′ by 5′ Gadsden flag (don’t tread on me) to Jason Recher when he walked by asking him to give it as a gift to Piper and Trig. Piper was sitting on the other side of the speaker.
Andrew Breibart was great the whole conference. A real Beckish warrior for our side.
Conference was a success. The only issue I had was lack of available wireless internet in the conf. area.
And for those that are curious, yes, my poster of Sarah attached to the balcony outside my hotel room DID make the cover of the New York Times yesterday.

I believe she is and will announce in response to her supporters asking her to run.

She seemed a little off in her delivery. Was there feedback or something going on with her monitor? She was speaking like someone who calls into a talk show and hears the delay on the radio. Thanks for that perspective.

Sarah Palin gets far more scrutiny by the American people than did the Marxist failed community organizer from Chicago/Hawaii/Indonesia (take your pick) with terrorist friends.
Oh, yes, Palin needs to be examined, veddy veddy carefully…she could have been sooooo dangerous to this country as VP…God only knows what would happen to this great land if she were President! Brrrr…I shudder at the thought!!!
LMAO
