Open thread: Palin’s tea party speech

posted at 8:20 pm on February 6, 2010 by Allahpundit

9 p.m. ET. Print media’s overflowing with tea-party stories today and cable news is promising saturation coverage, so this has very quickly become the second-biggest speech of her career. If she does as well tonight as she did at the GOP convention, the next round of poll numbers for her and the movement will be mighty interesting.

Two pieces to tide you over while you wait. The first is Politico describing the media-bashing going on at a convention that’s crawling with reporters:

Organizers initially moved to limit access to outlets deemed friendly to the cause, including Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, Breitbart.com, Townhall.com and World Net Daily. But they later relented and now say they’ve issued 200 press credentials, including multiple passes each to many of the elite national media organizations regularly disparaged by conservative activists as Democratic shills — the hated liberal mainstream media, or MSM…

“The mainstream media is the enemy,” declared Bob Bunting, a retiree from Hilton Head Island, S.C., attending the convention with his wife, Nancy Bunting. “You are for socialism and Barack Obama.”…

The convention credential list — which reflects granted press-pass requests, not actual attendees – also included five journalists and crew members from NBC News and four from ABC. Time magazine was allotted passes for a total of four journalists (likely including at least one photographer), while The Washington Post and The New York Times had a couple journalists each included on the list, and The Associated Press, Bloomberg News and Newsweek each had a reporter on the scene (as, of course, did POLITICO).

Jim Hoft has video of Breitbart zinging the press during his speech this morning. Meanwhile, WaPo wonders how much the members of an unorganized organization really have in common:

Here was a California woman counseling people on how to register new Republican voters in their communities, but there were others who criticize the Republican Party as fiercely as they do the Democratic Party. Here attendees lashed out against the practices of the Washington establishment, but there a man from Memphis announced the formation of a political action committee. Here a former congressman delivered a fiery defense of America’s “Judeo-Christian values,” but there delegates walked out of a prayer session they thought crossed a line…

Lori Christenson, who started the Evergreen-Conifer Tea Party in Colorado in her house using the social networking site Meetup.com, wants politicians to act like their power comes from the people, not from their celebrity. Her group refuses to get involved with conservative social issues, which she calls “very, very divisive.”

“I am coming to realize at this convention,” she said Friday, over the thundering of a speaker from Judicial Watch, “that we are very, very different in terms of our beliefs. So now what?”

Follow the link and scroll down for a pithy summary of what the movement’s about from, er, David Axelrod.

The two things to watch for tonight: How partisan will Sarahcuda be at what’s being billed as a nonpartisan event, and how heavily will third parties weigh in her rhetoric? She’s been admirably firm on that latter subject so far but the temptation to toss this crowd red meat by calling for political independence must be incredible. Exit question: Michael Steele could have gone to this thing but had to back out due to “scheduling issues”? What’s he got going on tonight that’s more important than this?

These things aren’t “but” things. We already know you jackasses think we’re confused and misled, no need to stretch.

Meanwhile, there’s no recession in government: even my poor, rural state of Arkansas has 129 more state employees making $100k+ than last year.

Throw the bums out String the bums up.

I watched some of the pre-speech going on at PJTV and it appears that people understand what this movement is and what potential it has. I like the fact there was emphasis put on, by many people, that just being a Republican or Democrat doesn’t indicate the level of support you’ll get, it’s agreeing with the basic principles of the movement, which are definitely Conservative.

Sarah Palin gives a great speech (and without a teleprompter). I got the sense, from listening to her, that she understands what the tea party movement is all about, too. To me, this is the beauty of the tea party movement it’s that it’s about “conservative” politics, not Democrat or Republican politics. Let’s face it, it’s much easier for Republicans to put their arms around conservative policies than it is Democrats, but there are conservative Democrats out there.

My goodness, you are showing such CONCERN for everyone! Over on the other thread you are b*tching about the “elite” crowd that Sarah spoke to…Yu are so worried that the common man should have been the proper ventue for this speech, and how could she do such a thing as speak to a -ay-per-view crowd???
And over here you are so CONCERNED that-GASP–people didn’t actually come with their own flags…
I’m aghast, I tell you, simply aghast!!!
PS–Are you quite done with all all your CONCERNS, or are you being paid per issue…?

lovingmyUSA on February 7, 2010 at 5:04 AM

Thank you for reiterating my points. Doing them in the tone you chose doesn’t decrease their validity one wit.

If I were being paid, and that thought concerns you, then you need to think about the implications of your sudden burst of anti-commercial logic to Tea Party Nation [TM] role in the tea party movement.

I watched the speech last night with the kids. She did a great job. Inspiring our country, backhanding the corruptocrats led by the corruptocrat in chief and plotting a course for We the People to seize this country back for our children’s sake.

Democrats and MSM aligned with Obama–sayonara. RINOs–same thing.

We the People.

I’m sorry, but if we are going to castigate Mr. Obama for failing to wear a flag pin, we need to reserve a bit of the same pepper for the commercial guys who put this on.

unclesmrgol

Obama wasn’t castigated for not wearing a flag pin, he was castigated for going out of his way to publicly announce that he was making a deliberate, conscious effort not to wear a flag pin.

xblade on February 7, 2010 at 2:08 PM

No, you are confusing cause and effect. Obama didn’t wear the flag pin, Obama got castigated by the conservatives for not wearing the flag pin, Obama doubled down in typical lefty fashion, and got castigated for that too.

Sometimes victory is won by tactical retreat. Obama straightened his lines by wearing a flag pin the next time around.

Our side lays claim to true patriotism. True patriotism includes a reverence for those who fought and died for us, via acknowledgment of our country’s patriotic symbols. It’s one thing for Mr. Obama, whose feelings in these things are suspect, to forget about it, and quite another for Tea Party Nation to forget about it. Afterward, even a claim that it was unintentional rings hollow in the second case, because we have far lower expectations of patriotism from Obama than we do from Tea Party Nation.

If Obama had claimed instead that he left his flag pin on the dresser at home by mistake, what would we think?

Can I just remind everyone of another great speech given in the cause of freedom, this one from P.J. O’Rourke at the Cato Institute in 1993.

http://theology.meetup.com/1/boards/thread/7907930/

This is because we believe in freedom. Freedom-what this country was established upon, what the Constitution was written to defend, what the Civil War was fought to perfect.

Freedom is not empowerment. Empowerment is what the Serbs have in Bosnia. Anybody can grab a gun and be empowered. It’s not entitlement. An entitlement is what people on welfare get, and how free are they? It’s not an endlessly expanding list of rights-the “right” to education, the “right” to health care, the “right” to food and housing. That’s not freedom, that’s dependency. Those aren’t rights, those are the rations of slavery- hay and a barn for human cattle.

There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.

So we are here tonight in a kind of anti-matter protest-an unpolitical undemonstration by deeply uncommitted inactivists. We are part of a huge invisible picket line that circles the White House twenty-four hours a day. We are participants in an enormous non-march on Washington-millions and millions of Americans not descending upon the nation’s capital in order to demand nothing from the United States government. To demand
nothing, that is, except the one thing which no government in history has been able to do – leave us alone.

Sharke on February 7, 2010 at 4:40 PM

What’s wrong with simply being an American, and proud of it? America has been the most powerful force of human freedom the world has ever seen, but yet we have a media and a political establishment that is consistently apologizing for our greatness. Enough of this already! I feel a since of hope and pride I haven’t felt for some time. The Tea Party Movement has brought back my faith in the American people. A movement with no single leader, no lobbyist, no powerful unions, no media brainwash… I’m proud of Sarah Palin for standing up to the machine while putting her entire family at risk. I stand with the Tea Party Movement. Democrats and Republicans are on national notice; we stand by the American Constitution and our Bill of Rights. Those of you who have violated our Constitution will be brought to justice. Those of you who have voted for Socialism and the destruction of the American way of life, will be sent packing. Those of you who have stuffed your pockets with tax payer dollars, and dollars stuffed into your wallets by way of buying your votes; to you we say your report card is all the evidence we need to know of what you have been doing while supposedly representing us. Your report card is your voting record. Soon your voting record will be made available to every American. Democrat or Republican, we will review your voting record very closely, as we can no longer trust your words. Have you cast your votes for freedom and liberty for all Americans, or have cast your votes for Socialism and the destruction of capitalism and free markets. A wave of truth is coming by way of Americans taking their own personal time to fight to preserve our way of life.

I just got back from Nashville after attending the convention. So many great people and great presentations! I brought my laptop but didn’t turn it on the entire time I was there. There were just too many people with whom to meet and exchange ideas and contact info.

Andrew Breitbart was amazing and Sarah Palin was worth the price of the conference. My husband and I are still on a high from all the fun but Monday, we will begin to organize our own local tea party. It’s so nice to know that we are not alone.

I wish all of the good HA people could have been there. It was a remarkable experience. The rwb family feels extremely blessed to have been witness to this unique moment in America. Like Fallon, we are still on a high. We only attended last night, but it was something special. Very special.

Well It did not take long for the Huff Pos and the Daily Kooks to bring out their knives. They are now saying she used the “Double Standard” with Rush. Judging on their response I would say she gave a pretty good speech.

We all had fun posting last night while Sara was speaking….it must have been amazing to be in the same room with her.

Knowing the usual speaking fees of folks like her and after all the publicity and the strength of her performance I think there’s one thing everyone can agree on:

That was an extremely well-spent hundred grand.

It would be nice to see the adults running this country once again.

But, I don’t think there are enough of those to go around anymore.

As more people lose their jobs and businesses, they’re learning first hand the value of food stamps, unemployment and how much it sucks not to have health care. They’re awfully glad those safety nets that they do have were in place…they never dreamed they would need them.

Conservatism and capitalism are going to become increasingly hard sells.

Guessing that was the plan.

Dr. ZhivBlago on February 7, 2010 at 10:44 PM

Wow. Fresh from giving a big hand up to Backdoor John McCain, she’s going to come give the rubes something to believe in.
I thought the tea party movement was supposed to be a reaction to being ignored by the party elites; so, Palin is the tea party darling, despite her support of the one of the ultimate Washington insiders, Backdoor John McCain. Color me confused, I guess. I don’t expect to agree with her on everything, but supporting one of the tumors of the GOP, someone that cheerfully f*cked his party for his own self aggrandizement, is a bit more than I’m willing to accept. Giving McCain 6 more years is basically handing Obama the GOP support he’ll want for amnesty; and Palin is doing her best to make that happen. And all this gushing over her is frankly sickening.
Guess the tea party movement has discovered what the rest of Washington has; tell the rubes what they want to hear; take their money, take their vote, then give them finger and do what you want to do until election time. Rinse, repeat.

The Sarah’Cuda did a good job–not many pauses, hit the most important issues, and had positive suggestions for improvements. Common sense, direct, funny at times. Her voice is not very inspiring–but the message and delivery are good. She seems consistent in what she believes and in what she says–unlike many “professional” politicians.
***
I would like to see her in a 40 minute debate with Comrade Obama (PBUH), VP Joe Biden, or Hillary Clinton. But they would be stupid to expose themselves to any Sarah Palin “sniper shots” from the woods. They do a lot better with Andrea Mitchell and Left Wing Media “reporters” like Chris “leg tingle” Matthews and his ilk.
