Open thread: Palin’s tea party speech
posted at 8:20 pm on February 6, 2010 by Allahpundit
9 p.m. ET. Print media’s overflowing with tea-party stories today and cable news is promising saturation coverage, so this has very quickly become the second-biggest speech of her career. If she does as well tonight as she did at the GOP convention, the next round of poll numbers for her and the movement will be mighty interesting.
Two pieces to tide you over while you wait. The first is Politico describing the media-bashing going on at a convention that’s crawling with reporters:
Organizers initially moved to limit access to outlets deemed friendly to the cause, including Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, Breitbart.com, Townhall.com and World Net Daily. But they later relented and now say they’ve issued 200 press credentials, including multiple passes each to many of the elite national media organizations regularly disparaged by conservative activists as Democratic shills — the hated liberal mainstream media, or MSM…
“The mainstream media is the enemy,” declared Bob Bunting, a retiree from Hilton Head Island, S.C., attending the convention with his wife, Nancy Bunting. “You are for socialism and Barack Obama.”…
The convention credential list — which reflects granted press-pass requests, not actual attendees – also included five journalists and crew members from NBC News and four from ABC. Time magazine was allotted passes for a total of four journalists (likely including at least one photographer), while The Washington Post and The New York Times had a couple journalists each included on the list, and The Associated Press, Bloomberg News and Newsweek each had a reporter on the scene (as, of course, did POLITICO).
Jim Hoft has video of Breitbart zinging the press during his speech this morning. Meanwhile, WaPo wonders how much the members of an unorganized organization really have in common:
Here was a California woman counseling people on how to register new Republican voters in their communities, but there were others who criticize the Republican Party as fiercely as they do the Democratic Party. Here attendees lashed out against the practices of the Washington establishment, but there a man from Memphis announced the formation of a political action committee. Here a former congressman delivered a fiery defense of America’s “Judeo-Christian values,” but there delegates walked out of a prayer session they thought crossed a line…
Lori Christenson, who started the Evergreen-Conifer Tea Party in Colorado in her house using the social networking site Meetup.com, wants politicians to act like their power comes from the people, not from their celebrity. Her group refuses to get involved with conservative social issues, which she calls “very, very divisive.”
“I am coming to realize at this convention,” she said Friday, over the thundering of a speaker from Judicial Watch, “that we are very, very different in terms of our beliefs. So now what?”
Follow the link and scroll down for a pithy summary of what the movement’s about from, er, David Axelrod.
The two things to watch for tonight: How partisan will Sarahcuda be at what’s being billed as a nonpartisan event, and how heavily will third parties weigh in her rhetoric? She’s been admirably firm on that latter subject so far but the temptation to toss this crowd red meat by calling for political independence must be incredible. Exit question: Michael Steele could have gone to this thing but had to back out due to “scheduling issues”? What’s he got going on tonight that’s more important than this?

It was a wonderful speech. I’d write more but I’m completely zonked at this hour.
It was a wonderful speech; and seeing/hearing such a wonderful speech delivered so well and in such lively a fashion by Sarah Palin — without any teleprompter or union goons standing on stage behind, beside or otherwise — was immensely refreshing for an actual change.
“Change” Obama, support Palin.

The ONE MISTAKE was Alaska as the shining city on the hill and I would bet all money that this was her first intentional “media tweak” – let them play that up as her big mistake.. it just bones up her credentials with Alaska – what a great shout out to back home. This whole speech vindicated her early resignation. Ha Ha. I love having Sarah as Joe Public.

I liked that she shot down the “leader” requirement for the tea parties. Not only because I agree but that it makes the media’s heads explode.

Have to agree with you wholeheartedly there. And Judson Phillips announced there’s to be another one in July. Hope he’s learned a few important things from this trial run.
As an aside, Andrew Breitbart was masterful in his smack down of the MSM!

just saw the speech )DVR delay) and it was fantastic. She made her points really well, seemed to ramble a little bit in the middle but got some real zingers in there against Obama and Political Correctness. She is a magnificent speaker and comes off so much better than she does in interviews…in my opinion. Her heart and values are in the right place and she has a clear approach to what she sees as the nations problems. Unlike with Obama, when I hear her speak, I know who she is and what she stands for.
I think it is time Palin and the whole Tea Party movement get bold and say that they plan to reform the Republican party from within. Palin did not come right out and say this in the interview after the speech but that is what the movement wants and it is what we should all be saying, we’re going to make that party our own because they lost their way and after we get through with the Republicans, it will be time revive the Blue Dogs in the other party who have gone extinct since the election of Obama. It is cleat that this Tea Party is a loose coalition of people who feel passionate about one particular issue, Limited government and Fiscal Responsibility. This one issue can win in both the Republican and Democratic parties.
I also was thrilled that Palin made it clear that the Tea Party avoid having one person as the leader or symbolic leader for the movement. I have said before that identifying the movement with one person makes it much more vulnerable to criticism. This is not about a cult of personality but a set of core values shared by many. The media tried to demonize this movement before and failed because of its diversity, having one singular leader would be dagerous. Reagan is known as the leader of the Conservative movement because he was successful as President, but before he became such a Conservative leader he was just one voice in a chorus that included such great men as William F. Buckley Jr., Milton Friedman, Barry Goldwater and others.
As I am writing this I am listening to some idiots on CNN described as “Independent Voter Analysts” (what the heck is that?) criticize Palin for being snarkey and partisan. I was glad she threw out the Red Meat in this speech because a lot of people, including independents, were nodding along. They’re recycling the same criticisms they always have been and it is clear they have no idea what the heck they are talking about.

An amusing description, despite the condescension and snark.
All things considered, though, I suppose it will be up to America’s moral leaders to temper the excesses of capitalism. Our political and legal leaders aren’t even able to run the system with an ounce of sense, and individual self-restraints have gone the way of the dodo.

kerrhome on February 6, 2010 at 10:55 PM
I am surprised that more hasn’t been made of the president’s suggestion to his party to get out of the “echo chamber” and talk to the people. Would that be the same people at tea parties and town halls that they spent the entire summer vilifying? Something about Nazis and astroturf, I believe the Speaker even worked up some tears of fear. Gosh I love the media.

I agree, and this goes to the heart of leftist anxiety, insecurity and identity. Their world is based on the great leader — either the messiah to worship or the satan to demonize. A movement rising out of the soul of America (not a mythical “proletariat” to be manipulated) terrifies them to their bones.
rrpjr on February 6, 2010 at 11:07 PM
Mostly, trusted local religious and community figures, and organizations of same. Their efforts could be encouraged by those with more influence…but it will HAVE to start at the very bottom level.
Fighting the case of the greedy-gadget-gimmes would have to be a grassroots effort if it is to have ANY effect at all. Even the most respected organizations (like Focus on the Family) would have no more chance of decreeing an end to it than King Canute did of ordering the tides to stop.

But in all reality, he’s probably realized that these people are *complete* idiots who have never voted in their entire lives, yet are demanding politicians (and voters) across the country heed to their ridiculous, unrealistic demands. They’ve become everything they’ve been preaching against for the last year, and I’m glad to see this movement starting to crack and crumble. Maybe then they can join the rest of America at the big boy’s table and act like adults with realistic expectations.

I just caught those two phonies on CNN. Anyone who thinks those are “independent” voters is on crack. Those are clearly libs who don’t wish to be labeled as such. Nothing Palin said tonight would’ve made them happy.
As for the speech, I thought it was great. She was a little shaky at times, but that’ll happen when you speak for 40 minutes without a teleprompter(the notes written on her hand were funny). And yes, she did make the “Alaska instead of America” gaffe and I swear it sounded like she said December 11 instead of September 11. But those are 10 seconds out of the entire speech. Dubya could only dream about being that coherent. And unlike Barry, she didn’t mispronounce any military terms.
It’s a speech like this that reminds me why she’s so popular with conservatives and even many independents. She’s willing to stand up for what she believes in and stand up to those who threaten to wreck everything great about this nation. Who else in the political arena does this as consistently and as effectively? Huckabee pays lip service on his weekly TV show. And Pawlenty’s been more vocal as of late. But Palin’s been doing it since the 2008 campaign, all through 2009, and is leading the charge at the beginning of 2010. Meanwhile Romney’s keeping his piehole shut, taking partial credit for Scott Brown’s victory, and contributing nothing to the national debate.
She’s gonna be appearing here in Houston tomorrow. The wife and I will be there. I’m looking forward to more of these speeches in the months to come. I have a feeling that if she does choose to run in 2012, this year will see her burying her primary opponents before they’ve even had a chance to announce their candidacies.
Doughboy on February 6, 2010 at 11:17 PM
:/ I thought that would be specific enough…
Think really local, as in individual churches and neighborhood figures banding together with a common message. Imagine something like the “Promise Keepers” conferences dedicated to combating wasteful spending, that’s the closest comparison I can think of at the moment.

I think there are some issues that need to be discussed when it comes to Palin and those who adore her (I’d argue most seem to creepily worship her in Obama follower fashion).
Everything that Palin has said thus far has been boilerplate GOP talking points…most of which have been already stated by others before her in public. What people seem to forget is that Palin has absolutely nothing to lose. She’s not in public service, she’s not running for any office, at this point, from what I can tell, she has no job outside of “pundit,” and that’s certainly not an actual job by itself.
So, she CAN say the stuff many have said before her, and do it loudly. It’s because she has literally nothing to lose. She can stop working tomorrow and live for the rest of her life off her book money.
She has no real obligation to answer tough questions, and in fact, if you notice, she NEVER goes anywhere where she’s asked tough questions. She always goes to venues where people can’t wait to fall over her like morons drooling all over themselves.
Why? She would get torn to pieces if she went anywhere to answer real questions and actually hit had knock some fastballs out of the park. Hell, the last few times we saw her in enemy territory, she choked big time, becoming a national joke whether you think she deserved it or not.
People, I think, tend to forget most of these things while fawning over her.

I still don’t think she’s going to run in 2012.
She keeps telegraphing that she doesn’t need “a title” to affect change.
The Caliphs’ destruction….sorry…TRANSFORMATION…of America has to be stopped in 2010 then we’ll worry about 2012. I’m not worried about the polls right now either. As I recall just a year before the 2008 election the polls were looking like we were going to see President Hillary Clinton or President Rudy Guiliani. And ummmmm, so far I haven’t been able to find any jobs in a Hillary or Rudy White House.
Time will tell, it was a very good speech, and if it helps to slow down Obama or stiffen the opposition then she’ll serve the purpose well. I think she’s wrong on supporting Rick Perry or McCain (they both need to go) but she’s the only one that clearly, convincingly can communicate Conservative values (ala Reagan). She’s certainly not in Reagans’ league yet but she’s only 45 and has been on the national stage for 18 months. NOT BAD GOVERNOR, NOT BAD AT ALL.

Pardon? There are quite a few of us who are, and we don’t dance like puppets. We listen carefully to the teachings of our Church, and, after careful consideration and nurturing of the informed conscience that the Lord has given us, we choose to follow the precepts of our common faith. And, since politics and faith interwine greatly in America, we support positions which are best for us as Americans and us as Catholics.
That includes taking a position opposite that of our bishops, who are in favor of Obamacare, and a position opposite Planned Parenthood, which stalwartly defends the legality of child-killing.

If we dis Obama for his late realization that the absence of an American flag on a politian’s lapel actually has some meaning, then the same issue must apply to those who forget to bring an American flag to their own convention, and rely upon hotel staff to provide same — only to find that said hotel isn’t quite that American either.
With that said, courtesy of PJTV, here is Mrs. Palin’s speech in its entirety.

Let’s see, you are bitching over on the other thread that Palin spoke to an “elite” crowd, and the horror of it all because it was not the “common man”…and here you are bitching that people didn’t bring flags…
You are definitely taking “CONCERN” to a whole new level–I’m almost impressed…
lovingmyUSA on February 7, 2010 at 4:42 AM
My goodness, you are showing such CONCERN for everyone! Over on the other thread you are b*tching about the “elite” crowd that Sarah spoke to…Yu are so worried that the common man should have been the proper ventue for this speech, and how could she do such a thing as speak to a -ay-per-view crowd???
And over here you are so CONCERNED that-GASP–people didn’t actually come with their own flags…
I’m aghast, I tell you, simply aghast!!!
PS–Are you quite done with all all your CONCERNS, or are you being paid per issue…?
lovingmyUSA on February 7, 2010 at 5:04 AM
ay-per-view–meant pay-per-view..this computer at work won’t let me preview…
lovingmyUSA on February 7, 2010 at 5:06 AM
I’m getting back to work now–a concept that I know you trolls don’t understand, living in your mom’s basement and all, and drawing off your paypal account. Sure hope Axlerod and LGF don’t forget to pay you. It isn’t pretty when trolls start eating their own…or when dead half-eaten cats start showing up…

What does he have that is more important than this? Making money on his book, making personal money on his speeches, lining his own pocket just like everybody else does- before the crash.

Hm, seems she’s trying to co-opt the movement for the GOP. That could be trouble.
Other than that she was great. She is a remarkable lady. I only have one request Sarah – Stay away from McCain! :)
True_King on February 7, 2010 at 7:57 AM
On a superficial note, did anyone see her killer shoes? (I have a similar pair in red, I’m proud to say.)
I love that Sarah wears business suits, scholarly glasses, and “never forget I’m a woman” heels. She puts liberal harpies to shame, she does–and it makes them hate her all the more.
God bless Sarah, and God bless America!
Grace_is_sufficient on February 7, 2010 at 8:12 AM
Really?? Who in the GOP has been stating, for a long enough time to be accurately described as ‘boilerplate’, the concept of shrinking government, transparency when writing legislation, individual freedoms over government control, and states rights via adhering to the Constitution? Can you name a couple ‘ol boilerplaters’ who have been running on these things? If not, you’re premise is false imo.
Your point that she has nothing to lose exposes the underlining sensibilities of other politians..and your possibly your own when evaluating politicians. What should the greed of personal gain have to do with principles?
Itchee Dryback on February 7, 2010 at 8:50 AM
Actually, no. You were imo. You may not realize it but that is what you line of reasoning seemed to imply. %The injection of religion was made by you.

The intelligence, appeal, and down-to-earth nature of Sarah Palin scares the heck out of those who wish her to fail.
She connects wwith people through her public speaking in a way that has not been seen in a long time.

Great speech. This is the Sarah Palin I thought I knew. During the McCain campaign, she was a diamond in the rough. She’s much more polished now. She’s a quick study with big potential.
Get ‘em, Saracuda.

Good speech. Sarah should just keep right on doing what she’s doing. She’s right, she doesn’t need an office. She is a great motivational speaker. DC would chew her up and spit her out, it’s full of corrupt, greedy liars. Bright as she is, she can’t change all of that. She’s much more useful doing things like this. She needs to get off Facebook and become the next Huffpo. That’s what I would do if I were her. Just my humble opinion.
