Special Olympics chief to Rush: How about not using the word “retard” anymore?

He can’t accept apologies, but I guess he can demand them.

“I incredulously listened to the segment in your show in which you repeatedly and offensively used the term ‘retard; in reference to our meeting with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel,” Special Olympics chief Tim Shriver wrote in a letter to Limbaugh today, asking that he invite Special Olympics athlete Loretta Claiborne onto his show to explain the pain the word causes.

“In my own experience, when I ask people – be they first graders or media figures – to join in stopping the casual use of the word “retarded”, they universally agree to do so. Most want to go further: they want to understand better how they can serve as agents of acceptance and dignity,” Shriver wrote. “Loretta is a role model and if given the chance to speak her mind on your program, she and many others like her would inspire you and your audience with her wisdom and toughness. This is a teachable moment. May I ask you to join her now by ending your use of this term and by further using your great influence and position to help others do the same?”

Here’s the audio of the Rush segment if you missed it yesterday. Fully 80% of our readers sided with him over Palin’s spokesman, who called what he said “crude and demeaning” when asked for comment about it and then scrambled this morning to clarify that all uses of the word “retard” are crude and demeaning, not just Limbaugh’s. (Greg Sargent, who solicited the quote, says it was crystal clear to Palin’s spokesman that he was asking specifically about Rush.) I think I speak for most of us when I say that this story’s gotten awfully tedious, but since this is a rare case where Rush actually might apologize for something he’s said, I dare say we must poll it. Lay on.

Mentally Retarded, as a clinical term is no longer used and it has been picked up by teenagers and other non-adults like Rahm Emanuel to diminish and devalue someone or something. Ridicule is the way of teenagers and leftists alike. Therefore, it should not be used. Rush has predictably pounced on this story for it’s entertainment value and as usual takes the moral high ground. He’ll get his mileage and points for this and will win in the minds of his followers, but that doesn’t mean his means justify his end. Rahm Emanuel’s words themselves condemn him and reveal his heart. For Rush to fill his and his listeners time about this, and to offend others along the way, also speaks of the issues that flow out of his own heart. I’m not a Rush fan simply because he ridicules contantly. I wasn’t a big Don Rickles fan either. Sara Palin won me over with her line, “A community organizer is sort of like a job…” A poke with a lot of truth exposed. Like Reagan, Sara represents the best of what the republican party can be. Witty and relevant without being puffed up and inflamatory. Rush is wrong.

No using retarded is incorrect. Retarded is a condition that a person cannot help. Idiot, dim-witted, brainless, pea-brain, and overeducated for their IQ, are all better. Calling them retarded is a put down to those who are retarded. Retarded people are smarter than them.

I admit, I used to refer to Al Gore as “Zippy” – does that make me a bad person?

You know, Rush could hold up a check for $5 million on his dittocam and ask the Special Olympics committee chief which he would rather have…the check, or a false apology. I bet the chief would STFU pronto.

The retards who are bitching about this should chill out!

Let’s here it for another round neutering of the English language. Or not. Frankly this whole episode is retarded, and not I am not going to apologize.

Rush will use it even more now, because it encompasses the entire Democrat Party; Rahm has verified this.

Yea; Retard is just too descriptive and blunt to be used in the Liberal/Democrat lexicon. It’s too sharp for their wit.
You need to conjure up some term that has no picture in your mind even when you repeat it over and over again. Something like a Buddhist mantra.
No wonder they are always cocked like a trap and ready to go off at the slightest indication of specificity.
Can’t handle reality.
