Report: NYT ready to drop scandal bombshell on New York governor
posted at 6:42 pm on February 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
HuffPo’s got all the links you need pointing to a sex scandal, which makes the deja vu here doubly intense. (Paterson copped to infidelity on practically his first day on the job, but the rumors have picked up again lately.) The story’s not that politically interesting on the surface. Paterson’s headed for an unholy beating by Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary if he’s dumb enough to run again, so the only major fallout from this will be to convince him not to. But that presents the question: Could the story have been leaked to the Times by Democrats anxious about a primary fight that might weaken Cuomo in a tough November political climate? Come to think of it, wasn’t the White House reportedly leaning on Paterson to retire months ago? Hmmmmm. Watch your back, Deval Patrick!
The Albany Times-Union has the story of the non-story:
The last few weeks have brought two major eruptions of rumors concerning Paterson’s private life: reports of nuzzling at a New Jersey restaurant and being caught in semi-flagrante in a utility closet in the Governor’s Mansion — stories that Paterson and his press office have vehemently denied.
According to sources who have actually been interviewed for the Times’ story, its central narrative is the role played by members of Paterson’s inner circle in his personal and political activities.
Rumors about a possibly publication date for the story have ranged from Monday to today; the latest suggests Sunday, but it’s hard to believe that the Times would hold the story much longer when knowledge that it’s pending has put every other reporter in the Capitol and elsewhere on the scent. Possible reasons for delay include editorial fine-tuning and thorough legal review.
Rumors range from the sensational to more mundane abuse-of-power stuff involving state troopers who know too much about shenanigans at the governor’s mansion. My only non-deep thought about this is that I wonder to what extent the Times-Union and Daily News are feeling emboldened to speculate by the Enquirer’s success with the John Edwards expose. Respectable papers don’t want to drop the ball on the next political mega-scandal, so we’re probably going to see more risk-taking with speculation until, inevitably, some big rumored scandal story fails to materialize and everyone is chastened anew. Here’s to relearning lessons!

My initial thought after reading this story: the Governor is legally blind, so someone could have made a sex tape and he wouldn’t even know it. Sorry, I have ‘Democrat on the brain’ lately…

SNL is going to miss him. NJ is relieved to have NY take some of the heat off their political circus.
pgrossjr on February 5, 2010 at 8:56 PM
Absolutely. The Times and NY Dems are thick as thieves. The NYT is always ready to take dictation from them.

You post a Gallup Poll of Democraps opinion of Socialism. After reading this post,I think we need a poll on how Democraps feel about cannibalism.

Yet charges of hypocrisy are strangely missing.

Didn’t read the comments, but somehow Obama has to get Cuomo the Governor’s seat now that Cuomo has begun investigation of BofA’s Ken Lewis in re. the Merrill deal. Lewis won’t go down w/out taking Bernanke and Geithner with him. Cuomo has to be stopped. May be why the Times is making believe it’s a real newspaper.

And still….all of this scandal pales in comparison to the evil deeds of Governor Palin. *rolls eyes*
capejasmine on February 5, 2010 at 10:16 PM
Would be cool if Obama knocks out both Paterson and Holder, although it would raise questions of why Obama goes after black men .

“Sex in a broom closet with a strange woman? I thought I was in my bedroom with my wife.”

Leave Paterson alone!
Hell, the poor guy probably couldn’t see who he was messing around…

Less interested in the scandal, more interested how someone sight impaired gets a mistress.
It defies logic. It’s not as though he can drive himself to the No-Tell-Motel and meet up with someone.
Seems to me the entire affair (no pun) would require assistance from his handlers (no pun).
Talk about a leap of faith. Trust his handlers/guides and trust the mistress. Takes blind date to a new definition!

What was that joke about a blind squirrel and nuts? Oh, never mind.
Vashta.Nerada on February 5, 2010 at 11:08 PM
Well he is blind you know – maybe he just tripped and fell into some “strange”.
HondaV65 on February 5, 2010 at 11:12 PM
What’s that? You say you’re ugly baby? How the hell would I know? Hey, you know I hit that crazy blonde from SNL. What was her name? Annie? Abbey?

“It’s good to be the president”…or governor.
Anyone with a title has to fight them off with a broomstick (from the utility closet?). Betcha even Qadaffi and Achmadinejad has the lay-deeeeez lined up around the corner waiting for a shot at that those stud muffins.
Dr. ZhivBlago on February 6, 2010 at 2:55 AM
This has Andrew Cuomo’s DNA all over it. The Cuomo’s have evolved political sleaze to an artform. Andrew’s an expert at catching unfaithful spouses…….. he caught his own former wife.

With that scruffy face, how would they know which end they were kissing?

From Seinfeld:
George: Kramer goes to a fantasy camp. His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down two-thousand dollars to live like him for a week. Do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating; that’s a fantasy camp.
Mr_Magoo on February 6, 2010 at 9:00 AM
He dared go against the President…and, as has been written in this comment flow before, Chicago came out to aid Cuomo. I feel for Patterson, he has been on the “hit” list for a while now. Whatever happened to loyalty in a staff?

Love is in the air
Everywhere I look around
Love is in the air
Every sight and every sound
And I don’t know if I’m being foolish
Don’t know if I’m being wise
But it’s something that I must believe in
And it’s there when I look in your eyes

JACK RYAN REDUX!
Amazing, none of you here has figured this all out yet. Doesn’t anybody remember how Obama got elected in 2004 to the US Senate? His oppo research team leaked transcripts from Republican wonderboy Jack Ryan’s divorce proceedings, specifically the allegations surrounding his Swinger lifestyle. Now, here we are 6 years later, and the exact same thing is happening to another Obama rival.
Sheesh! Was that so hard to figure out?
