Obamateurism of the Day; Update: Bonus Obamateurism
posted at 8:05 am on February 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I know Allahpundit hit this one last night, but no set of Obamateurisms would be complete without including the Navy “corpseman” remarks from Barack Obama. Besides, I disagree with my esteemed blog partner on this one. Had Obama said this just one time and corrected it afterward in his remarks, then I’d have bet that some helpful staffer had loaded the Teleprompter with an incorrect phonetic spelling. However, after the first time “corpseman” came out of his mouth, any speaker with even a passing knowledge of the military would have realized that the word had been mispronounced. After the second one, it should have been obvious. Instead, Obama went for the hat trick:
One such translator was an American of Haitian descent, representative of the extraordinary work that our men and women in uniform do all around the world — Navy Corpsman Christian [sic] Brossard. And lying on a gurney aboard the USNS Comfort, a woman asked Christopher: “Where do you come from? What country? After my operation,” she said, “I will pray for that country.” And in Creole, Corpsman Brossard responded, “Etazini.” The United States of America.
God’s grace, and the compassion and decency of the American people is expressed through the men and women like Corpsman Brossard.
Next time, maybe a White House staffer should make sure that all of the hard words really are spelled phonetically — or maybe our Commander in Chief should familiarize himself with the nation’s military instead.
Update: Several readers have pointed out an Obamateurism I missed. Obama calls Brossard “Christian” in one place and “Christopher” in another. The text comes from the White House.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I thereforpse announce that today, all words ending in the “or” sound be thereforpse be suffixed with the most appropriate non-silent “orpse” in honorpse of our most dignified 0ratorpse in Chief.
The word “or” is now “orpse”. Forpse example, it will either rain orpse snow.

TOTUS: he reads it how he sees it.
staffer: crap, next time spell it core-man.
TOTUS: I can’t do everything….he also expects me to balance a budget.

I used to work summers at a day camp for kids with special needs. There was one boy who would start every sentence talking about his “be-u-t-full gen-yus mother”. I loved that kid.
Now I have taken to refering to the man in the White House as my “be-u-t-ful gen-yus president”.

I love that raised chin and smug look on Obama’s face everytime he’s promptering.
I love it because it reminds me of what an arrogant failure he is.
I love it because, no doubt, millions of voting Americans feel the same way I do.
Chin up, Barry! In 2012 your Presidency will be in need of a pallbearer instead of a corpse/man.

Maybe Obambi should play Call of Duty – that is where my 12 year old learned to pronounce Corpsman correctly.
ctmom on February 5, 2010 at 8:26 AM
If Obama had uttered the mispronunciation once, I’d agree it was a hapless or even stupid mispronunciation (due, perhaps, to a dedicated need to pronounce aloud specifically what he was reading and not mentally make an immediate leap to the phonetical statement of words — stupid, yes), BUT, Obama went on and stated this gruesome rendition three times, total, WITH EMPHASIS on the ghoulish mispronunciation.
So I think this is another one of Obama’s gruesome snarks about a country that he loathes.
I remember the night after the Inaugural in D.C. and there was this parade taking place before the two Obamas, the grandma and the two children, and the filming was taking place from within their booth, capturing their faces and immediate responses to the parade taking place before them.
When a military group began parading past, both Michelle and Barack had a very visible reaction which I’d describe as “loathing”. Barack was very quick to resume his big smile while Michelle turned her face away and the camera quickly turned to grandma, who was also captured with a loathing look on her face and was also seen turning away as if she had seen a giant green pile of goo on a new carpet before her.
I think that moment told anyone all they should need to know about these people (the Obamas).
And I think Barack pronounced “corpseman” because that’s his ghoulish nature acting out. He wants people to “subliminally” get his message, that the U.S. is deceased, or, likely, he thinks it is.
Lourdes on February 5, 2010 at 8:27 AM
I wonder which of the fifty-seven states the corpseman called home?
BTW, when you type “corpseman” spell check doesn’t recognize it. I guess TOTUS didn’t come with that feature or the smartest president in history is really an ignorant buffoon.
walkingboss on February 5, 2010 at 8:27 AM
I have said it before, and I will continue to say it. Obama is not a product of this country. He may have been born here, but he is not an American. I am not sure exactly what he is, but he is not an American. He shares zero values with the vast majority of the people in this country.

Just thought…Barack Obama says his Grandad == with whom he spent some of his youth, old enough to be speaking and interacting with adults, certainly — Grandad was a Navy veteran, yes?
This makes it even more likely to me that Obama was intentionally mispronouncing the word.
Lourdes on February 5, 2010 at 8:37 AM
He probably practiced it wrong too it’s just there’s no one in his inner circle that knows anything about the military to correct him. He’s pathetic.

I’m aware of how a teleprompter works, friend.
My comments are still valid.
It ain’t the prompter causing Barry’s high chin and smug expression.
It’s his wholly undeserved arrogance.

OT: CHICAGO (AP) – That historically all-white club known as the U.S. Senate is likely to lose what little diversity it has after November’s elections.
Two white men will be competing for President Barack Obama’s former seat in Illinois, now held by Roland Burris, the chamber’s lone African-American. Appointed by the scandal-tainted former governor, Burris won’t be seeking a full term. {snip}

I just read the article about the jobs report and I’m at a total loss. January saw 20,000 jobs lost. They just revised the jobs lost in 2009 by nearly one million. Yet the unemployment rate DROPPED from 10% to 9.7%?!
Ok, November’s job growth was revised upward from 4,000 to 64,000, but that doesn’t account for the change in the rate. Something ain’t right here.
