Franken blasts Obama’s lack of leadership in meeting of Senate Democrats
posted at 2:55 pm on February 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Politico reports that an angry confrontation ensued when David Axelrod met with Senate Democrats in private this week. While Obama’s meeting with Congressional Democrats was so managed as to be boring, Axelrod took the brunt of anger from the caucus, especially Al Franken, not exactly known for his sunny disposition. However, Franken was not alone in complaining about the lack of leadership from the White House:
Sen. Al Franken ripped into White House senior adviser David Axelrod this week during a tense, closed-door session with Senate Democrats.
Five sources who were in the room tell POLITICO that Franken criticized Axelrod for the administration’s failure to provide clarity or direction on health care and the other big bills it wants Congress to enact.
The sources said Franken was the most outspoken senator in the meeting, which followed President Barack Obama’s question-and-answer session with Senate Democrats at the Newseum on Wednesday. But they also said the Minnesotan wasn’t the only angry Democrat in the room.
“There was a lot of frustration in there,” said a Democratic senator who declined to be identified.
“People were hot,” another Democratic senator said.
The only surprise is that it’s taken this long for Democrats to acknowledge — in private — what everyone else has already deduced in broad daylight. Barack Obama doesn’t want to lead or govern as much as he wants to campaign. Even when he campaigns, as he did in both his State of the Union and September 2009 speeches to the joint session of Congress, Obama rarely offers any specifics to his proposals, preferring to avoid getting entangled in the various interests competing on the issues.
Of course, many of us predicted just that from a man who racked up an impressive number of “presents” in the state legislature before coming to Congress. Before taking the oath of office as President, Obama had never been put in the position of providing political leadership. Even in the legislatures, Obama didn’t perform any leadership duties except as a chair of a committee in Illinois. As President, Obama has done nothing at all to craft his own agenda, outsourcing it instead to Nancy Pelosi and offering only tepid support of various ObamaCare components.
Under those circumstances, the presidential scolding during the SOTU was bound to ruffle feathers among the Democratic caucuses. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) reacted immediately by accusing Obama of having “mailed in” a leadership role in the speech. The only surprise about Franken lashing out at Axelrod, the architect of Obama’s approach, is that he didn’t beat Landrieu to the punch.
Still, what did Democrats expect when they backed Obama for the nomination?

Democrats live for the moment-immediate gratification is all that matters, then they all light a cigarette and lean back on their pillows.
Nothing new, of course. If they had looked ahead, they would have realized that the Democrats could have held onto the White House for at least 4 more years, if only they had the stones to have demanded that Bill Clinton resign in 1999. After all, an incumbent President Algore would have easily been elected in his own right in 2000.

Does this mean Franken’s next book will be titled “Barack Obama Is a Skinny, Big-Eared Idiot”?
As for what the Dems were thinking when they backed Obama, I think they liked the idea that he had no desire to govern. That gave Congress carte blanche to do whatever they pleased, especially once they secured 60 votes in the Senate.
The only problem is they didn’t anticipate the public outrage over their agenda. I think living in their bubble in DC brainwashed them into believing this was a center-left nation that embraced the concept of socialism and big government.

Those are the reasons a lot of Americans voted for him, but I’d wager that a lot of Congressional Dems figured Obama would be way more of a rubber stamp than Hillary. They served alongside him since 2005, so they knew how disengaged he was as a legislator.

They expected to win. Nothing more, nothing less. Power was the end goal, and its immediacy was foremost. What to do with it and how to manage the populace and certain politicians, was left til later. They backed the ‘cool articulate black man’ to because they thought that would win. Which just goes to show that they care more about power and appearances than character or experience to lead. This should tell the people everything they need to know about whom to reelect.

Obama is the king of fools–his Democratic representatives and senators–and Franken is the jester. Pelosi is the Wicked Queen (she reminds me of the queen in Snow White). They are caricatures of real people. I watch in amazement how they conduct themselves “professionally” (tongue in cheek) and the insanity of their thought processes.

Well, they reasonably expected that a candidate sold as a leader would become one upon taking office. Good, bad, or otherwise, Dem presidents in the past (except for the Carter disaster) have at least tried to lead. This is the first time in memory that a president of either party has farmed out the lead position in any major issue, let alone issues that his handlers made everyone believe were his first priorities. If anything, I think the dems were so surprised by the true emptiness of the suit and its lack of leadership that they didn’t know what to do, which led to the inability of congress to accomplish anything despite having a near bulletproof majority.
