Video: Obama salutes Navy “corpse-man”
posted at 5:20 pm on February 4, 2010 by Allahpundit
A ticky-tack mistake, but then so was Bush’s pronunciation of “nuclear” and the left had fun with that. As always with this sort of gaffe, it resonates to the extent that it appears to confirm a suspicion about the person that uttered it. Bush was supposedly a dummy, ergo “nu-cu-lar” caught on; Martha Coakley was out of touch with voters, ergo the Curt Schilling thing had legs; The One is a dovish Ivory Tower egghead with no military background, ergo we’ve gotten half a dozen e-mails about this in the past few hours. Look on the bright side, though: At least he’s trying.
I can’t believe that a guy with a Harvard Law degree wouldn’t know how to pronounce “corps,” so I’m guessing some dumb staffer in charge of TOTUS decided to try to “help him out” by typing the phonetic pronunciation — incorrectly — into the machine. And in true Ron Burgundy fashion, O read it as is right off the ‘prompter. You stay classy, Navy corpse-men! Click the image to watch.

What I can’t understand is why Obama supporters seem to have no sense of humor and get defensive about us having fun at the bumbling president’s expense.
I had no problem laughing during Dave Letterman’s “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” which by design was set up to ridicule Bush as often as possible.
Funny how the producers of the show suspended this popular segment of the late night show on Jan. 16, 2009, just before the bumbler was inaugurated.
Loosen up, Obots. Know you’re out there reading this.
RepubChica on February 4, 2010 at 6:32 PM
Wow. Yet another reason to not like or trust President Obama.
(For the purpose of this discussion “intellectual curiosity” means truly being driven to learn and not simply making it a point to have substantial books under one’s arm whenever a press conference and/or photographic opportunity is pending.)
There’s one truth from his “corpseman” speech. Obama has obviously never seen Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Band of Brothers, or any number of other movies about our good and brave military, or President Obama is not an intellectually curious person. Each time a wounded character called out “Corpsman!” in any of those movies a truly intellectually curious person would’ve asked himself, “What’s he saying? Why are they all calling out that same word?” and he would’ve found out. Because he didn’t know something, and he wanted to know.
He’s either not intellectually curious or he’s never seen a movie that paints our military in a positive light. So which is it?

Every time the Prez says “Pakeeestan” shivers run up my spine. It is just creepy.
Since Prez is sooo sensitive about the blogs, wonder what his reaction to this is going to be? He obviously does not like anyone discussing him at all other than with fanfare and much love. This could leave a mark on his little psyche!

SNL – the real life for Libs.
I am not as disturbed that he misread the line as that he didn’t seem to even know what he was reading. He was in that Disney animitronic Hall Of President’s mode he goes into when he has to make a speech. He doesn’t give a rats ass about Haiti & the disaster nor the good works of our servicemen.
There is nothing Plouffe can do about this. This is Obama; empty, dispassionate and insolent. Plouffe can feed the papers all the fluffy stories he wants, but every speech Obama makes that isn’t about him or about winning for him we see this.

Kinda sad, but Hannity was saying “cors man” on the radio today. Also kinda sad. He was making fun of The Won while saying “cors man”.
Lets see if he gets it right before his show tonite…

When Obama says corpse-man and bombs right along without a look back or any vague sense that he’s said anything amiss, you understand that it’s all about the presentation for him. All style and no substance, all bun and no burger.
And you’d think that any Haitian would recognize a corpse-man as a zombie.

Obama bragged during the campaign that he was qualified to be Commander in Chief because he had a great uncle, twice removed, who was in the US military 70 years ago.

I’m usually not easily offended by idiots, but this is pretty offensive to me. I was a Navy Corpsman for 22 years, and to watch Obama try to honor others by not even taking the time to pronounce it correctly (boy, that 6 figure Harvard education was worth it, huh?) is just terrible. Poor America……

I’m sure that TOTUS will be disciplined appropriately.
Sowell Disciple on February 4, 2010 at 7:20 PM
Sorry, but Bush’s pronunciation, though a less preferred variant, is more common than Rachel Maddow and others like would think. To me, it’s akin to the common pronunciation of Washington as “Worshington.” I’m still trying to find the “r” just as I try to find the x is “ask” when someone pronounces “ask” as “ax.”
Obama’s mistake isn’t one of mispronunciation; it’s one of misreading and it’s just one more example of his complete reliance on TOTUS.
Keep believing that Obama’s some kind of boy genius. At best–at best–I put him in the category of being one of the dumbest smart people we’ll ever see.
BuckeyeSam on February 4, 2010 at 7:21 PM
Yeh. Obama claimed his great uncle participated in the liberation of Auschwitz.
Since the Russian forces liberated Auschwitz that poked a big fat hole in Obama’s claim. That’s not to say it completely ruled it out. It’s certainly within the realm of possibilities that Obama’s uncle was a commie.
fogw on February 4, 2010 at 7:21 PM
If this had been Bush it would be all over the liberal universe by now and the air would be echoing with howls of derision and hyper-analysis e.g., about the deep Freudian subtexts of “corpse man” (sending soldiers to their deaths, etc.)
Not only is the mangle straight from Dan Quayle but reveals military illiteracy.

Expect TOTUS to be programmed with proper pronunciation of hard words. Corpsman [kawr-muhn]. Maybe even having that little bouncing ball bouncing on every syllable to keep Obama on pace.
But It might be better to have a red mushroom button next to Obama’s handlers to be used as a “dump/delay button”.

Kinda irritates me, my son is a new (literally this week) Navy Hospital Corpsman (kinda followed in my footsteps – I’m a Fire Controlman/Data Systems Technician). But it’s not unexpected. He’s simply not at all familiar with the military, even in passing (until now, when he’s my boss). He’s never associated himself with any military (or former military) in the circles he’s traveled, or has shown any interest familiarizing himself in their point of view. He’s a “typical urban academic”, as Moe Lane observed, to his irony consternation. They think in caricatures of the military – John Kerry’s “Stuk in Irak”, for example.
JeffWeimer on February 4, 2010 at 7:34 PM

Dusty on February 4, 2010 at 7:36 PM
Hmmm-a true idiot in the old IQ rating sense, no, but more along the lines of someone who thinks he knows more and is more intelligent than he really is.
Remember, we really don’t know much of anything about his academic abilities since that (like the birth certificate, selective service registration and other things) has been hidden from the public. He also seems to have trouble thinking and expressing himself off the cuff concerning things that he hasn’t rehearsed or mulled over a hundred times in his head…the emotional, knee-jerk, ideological stuff He (and the other Libtards) are all pretty good at.
So, I’m inclined to believe he is of fairly average intelligence. Embracing Marxism, Islam and knowing the weaknesses of our society and our government doesn’t exactly take a true genius to figure out.

Yeah, Obama claimed the Uncle liberated a Concentration Camp, I think Auschwitz was the camp mentioned. In true Liberal fashion, they were later given a history lesson. If the Uncle of Dear Leader liberated Auschwitz, he would have been in Uncle Joe’s Army. American forces were never anywhere near that camp.
They later adjusted the story to a camp liberated by American forces.
I’m not sure if they are once again re-writing history, or that Obama is just an idiot, and has no clue as to his own family history. I would be inclined to give him a pass on this, but given his penchant for, to put it lightly, stretching the truth, I cannot.
I am at the point that whenever I see our President speak, I know one thing is absolute fact, he’s lying, it’s a shame.

Christien on February 4, 2010 at 8:35 PM
You know, the thing about this is that you don’t have to have military experience to know how to pronounce “corpsman.”
You just have to be a normal American. Somewhere along the way a typical 48-year-old American with an average education — even one with degrees from Columbia and Harvard — would have absorbed the word and the concept by osmosis. Maybe from the news. Maybe from the movies. Maybe from the M*A*S*H TV series.
But Obama didn’t.
J.E. Dyer on February 4, 2010 at 8:47 PM
You would lose that bet!
A true lefty would volunteer for the “Peace Corps”, ever hear of it?
Do you believe in AWG? Ever hear of the “Green Corps”?
Even an elitist snob like Obama must have heard of “Eprit de corps”
How bout these
Citizen Corps, Mercy Corps, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, Citizen Corps, Medical Reserve Corps, International Medical Corps, National Health Service Corps > HRSA
Democracy Corps as in “Democracy Corps and the Center for American Progress and National Public Radio”
Seriously Palin Steele, have you and your ignate friends been mispronouncing these names for years?
DSchoen on February 4, 2010 at 8:52 PM
No, I was purposely pointing out how the exact word “corpsman” would’ve come up in the hip iPod/pop culture circles he’d been exposed to before becoming the Commander in Chief. I put it far past his ability to associate “corps” with “man” on his own (as he solidly proved, frankly, by not knowing to correct himself as he read his way into the unknown), but I can’t believe he’d never heard the word before he became the president.
I honestly would bet one of the problems with him not knowing the word is that there was never a “First All-Black Corpsman Unit to Serve in WWII” type of recognition that needed citing and speechifying over to show why the U.S. sucks.

Oh now seriously, I cannot be the only one to have noticed this. Is the man. . . how should I say?. . . impaired?
Look at this video again–he’s slurring his words. Obama has had at least one too many–at the National Prayer Breakfast! Am I wrong? Listen to the way he says “representative” at about 00:14–very carefully. He’s having to work pretty hard at getting that word out. Listen to the few seconds after when he says “men and women” how he hangs on to the “n” in women. Listen to his too-careful pronunciation of names where his timing is off.
I think it’s pretty darned clear that the guy was in his cups, at 9:12 a.m. Heh.
labwriter on February 4, 2010 at 11:57 PM
Allah, when referring to Obama, should the words “The Image” be capitalized?
Shy Guy on February 4, 2010 at 11:58 PM
That’s ridiculous. When I read “corpse-man” I didn’t even clue into the fact that he could have been referring to “corpsman.” After reading it, I tried to figure out why I knew how to pronounce that correctly then I realized “Oh yeah, the Marine Corp.” I’ve never heard anyone refer to it as the “Marine CorP.” “Corpsman” and “Corps” are also pronounced in almost every single war movie known to man. Geez.
Even if he read it wrong, in his brain he should have realized the pronunciation was wrong and corrected himself the second time.
Ingenue on February 5, 2010 at 12:03 AM
LOL this reminds me of small children learning to read–it’s actually rather tough for them in early developmental stages to focus both on word pronunciation AND the meaning of what they are reading.

Yep, that’s why I left MASH out and listed the ones I did. Good clarification for the gallery, but unimportant to my broader point.
It’s a word I’ve never spoken in my entire life other than to explain to my wife what it meant during a movie, yet my bitter and clinging state-college-in-Alabama self somehow managed to know the word from somewhere to be able to tell her. All of us non-military folks know how to say “corpsman” from less exposure than our president has had (he’s their boss, so he trumps us all).
