Quote of the day

posted at 11:05 pm on February 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

“At the hospital, DC police officer John Muniz arrived to issue Medlock a $20 jaywalking ticket. Medlock was lying sedated on a gurney, so Muniz delivered the ticket to a Daily Caller colleague, who was at the hospital with Medlock. He looked embarrassed as he did so. Behind him stood a man dressed in a dark suit who identified himself as a ‘special agent.’ He said nothing but wrote in a notebook.

“Curiously, the ticket says that Medlock was struck at an intersection four blocks from where the accident actually took place. And it claims that Medlock was walking diagonally across the intersection at the time. In one of his strikingly short conversations with the Daily Caller, agent Mike McGuinn acknowledged that Medlock was not jaywalking at all, but walking ‘outside the crosswalk when the incident occurred.’

“The question is: Did the federal agent driving the SUV, faced with potential liabilities from the accident, encourage local police to issue some sort – any sort – of citation to Medlock, to establish his culpability?”

Either Officer Muniz exercised proper diligence in ascertaining the facts before issuing the ticket, or he did not. Given that the intersection listed on the ticket is not the intersection where the accident took place, I suspect not. He will probably wind up being far more than merely embarrassed after the dust settles on this one. The truth will be revealed.

I don’t have all the facts but obviously the officer acted stupidly.

This is incredible. Some heads need to roll in this little soap opera. Perhaps, the next thing that will happen is that his tax returns will be audited.

Poor J.T., is suppose to be in surgery right now. Prayers for his speedy recovery.

Cindy Munford on February 5, 2010 at 10:16 AM

In LA, we used to get jaywalking tickets often. Reality is in the city that walking diagonally is not safe.

And it does lead to deaths.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 10:46 AM

If a Federal officer can gun down an unarmed woman fleeing from gunfire with a baby in her arms and get away with it, what makes you think a little hit and run is even going to phase DC?

Browncoatone on February 5, 2010 at 7:22 AM

If you are referring to Ruby Ridge, the woman was NOT running away with a baby in her arms.

She was inside the house holding the baby and the special agent popped her from a distance.

Her 14 year old son was shot in the back by a special agent after the special agent shot the boys dog. The boy was running away from the scene, terrified by what had just happened. He never saw who was shooting at him.

Talon on February 5, 2010 at 7:46 AM

I looked into Ruby Ridge again, and you’re right. I stand corrected.

However, killing an unarmed woman with a baby in her arms through the door of her home without so much as identifying yourself is not the kind of treatment I expect from a federal officer. Especially when that same Federal government says it can’t pursue foreign terrorists without reading them Miranda rights.

Browncoatone on February 5, 2010 at 10:47 AM

Ann. You’ve got me shaking my head.

This is not even about j-walking. And city people know how to j-walk–just like country people know how to cross a cow pasture.

Just when I begin to be impressed at some of the things you say, you come out of the blue with a gem like this.

Ann,

Tell the truth. Did you even read the details of this incident, and understand them, prior to commenting?

Yeah, he was outside the crosswalk. I lost a great aunt in a similar accident in DC way back in history.

Anyway, my only point was about tickets being issued. They were regularly handed out in LA for walking diagonally OR outside the crosswalks. It was not cheap, either.

Vacuous, puerile comment.

eaglesdontflock on February 5, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Yeah, he was outside the crosswalk.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 11:32 AM

I call BS! You did not read the links with the details.

The victim says he was walking within the crosswalk lanes.

The ticket says he was jaywalking, four blocks from where the incident actually happened.

Now, who would you tend to believe?

Yoop on February 5, 2010 at 11:47 AM

Yeah, he was outside the crosswalk.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Really? I didn’t realize you were there. Oh wait. Just toss out all the other contradictory claims and evidence and go with the one that suits your troll desires.

I get it.

Box of Chardonnay and a fresh supply of pharmaceuticals. It will cross the line and go passive-aggressive in no time.

How can an officer issue a ticket to an incident he did not witness?

roux on February 5, 2010 at 12:08 PM

How often does the FedGuv run roughshod over folks like this, and it never sees the light of day?

In this case, they had the misfortune to run over somebody who has a large and loyal following on the internet, but they went ahead and ran with their standard cock-and-bull CYA play, not realizing how high handed they are going to appear.

I don’t blame Obama for this, or the Democrats for that matter. This is the out-of-control FedGuv looking after itself, which happens regardless of which party is in power.

I am reminded of the old Star Trek episode, when the M-5 computer vaporizes some poor Redshirt when it establishes a new power connection direct to the Warp Drive. How long before all of us simply get in the way?

Haiku Guy on February 5, 2010 at 12:19 PM

So, will any Government job work; or do I have to work for a specific area before I’m allowed to flee the scene of an accident in a “hit & run” manner without issue?

I’m just saying; if I ran down a pedestrian and left the scene; I suspect I wouldn’t get a chance to try to get the pedestrian charged with jaywalking… the police here don’t often take that sort of advice from people in the cells.

gekkobear on February 5, 2010 at 12:46 PM

Like I said on a prior thred, the incident has gotta be on at least three different security cameras.

OxyCon on February 5, 2010 at 12:56 PM

I would expect this is is a simple accident rather than a targeted hit. I’m just not sure that’s much of an improvement. Does the State Department routinely handle accidental hits by trying to shift blame to the injured party, and cover it up with bogus charges?

There’s a very simple principle here: if you have done nothing wrong, you should not have to fear your own government.

Or, as Thomas Jefferson said,

When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.

If we have to start fearing our own government, then we have to turn it around so the government fears us.

Step 1: throw the bums out at the ballot box.

tom on February 5, 2010 at 1:48 PM

hmmm…

It’s the State Department. It deals in alternative realities and disregard of the obvious all the time.
