Palin spokesman on Limbaugh’s “retard” joke: “Crude and demeaning”

posted at 5:58 pm on February 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

It’s on. A little.

I asked Palin spokesperson Meghan Stapleton for comment on Rush’s rant, and she emailed me this:

“Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”

It hardly has the passion of her response to Rahm, and there’s no call for him to step down. But given Rush’s stature among conservatives, it’s pretty interesting that she went this far, denouncing his on-air rant as “crude and demeaning name-calling.”

His “on-air rant” was just an extended goof at Emanuel’s expense for describing lefty activists as “retarded,” but having chosen to pick this fight, I guess Sarahcuda can’t make exceptions for humor. This is the second prominent conservative her team has had to chastise in two days: An advisor to Rick Perry, whom she’s supporting, was upbraided in similar terms yesterday for using the word “retarded” on a conference call (it’s now become a minor issue in the Texas Republican primary). Ted Nugent, who’ll be playing at a Perry/Palin rally this weekend, has also been quoted using the term in interviews, so presumably he’s next. I wonder how much mileage Olby will get out of all this before the scoldings are finally done.

Audio of Rush’s “rant” below. You know we’re going to have to poll this one, don’t you?

I side with Palin on this.

I love Limbaugh, but there’s a “pendulum principle” at work here.

The fact is … WE ARE WINNING NOW. We are making inroads with independents. We need Limbaugh to continue making reasoned arguments for independents to latch onto – but the bottom line is, we’re on TOP right now and Obama and the Democrats are the underdogs.

We need to make sure that our rhetoric doesn’t turn people off. I’d like to point out what nasty and ugly “winners” the liberals were in November, 2008. I’d like for everyone to remember the crowds of Obama supporters singing “Hey, Hey … Goodbye” to George Bush’s helicopter as it took off after the inauguration. That kind of nastiness didn’t win them any more supporters and I say it lost them A LOT. When Obama told the Republicans “I Won” … when Nancy Pelosi wagged her crooked finger at the house Republicans … when Harry Reid called American Patriots “Evil Mongers” …

All of that is hugely responsible for them finding themselves in the prostrate position they are in today.

I’m a full on Alinsky Conservative radical … and I want to bury these people and their ideology.

But Limbaugh needs to back off on the nastiness.

I applaud Sarah Palin for this – and it proves she’s not a political opportunist when she’s willing to give it to her own side. I know she still loves Limbaugh, there’s no doubt about that – and hopefully he’ll take her advice.

Rush, one of the greatest political analysts of all times, has several flaws, not the least of which is his immaturity in expressing sophmoric or sexual humor as political commentary. It merely detracts seriously from his otherwise solid conservative credentials -but he’ll never see that as the flaw that it is, anymore than he’ll develop an ability to accept criticism.

Don L on February 5, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Rush was extremely offensive. I don’t go along with partisan crud. Either the use of the term is wrong or it isn’t.

And those who think it’s OK if “our” side uses it are missing the point.

BTW, if that’s a joke, then it totally missed the boat by a mile.

I’m an almost middle-aged woman on the autistic spectrum.
I guess that technically I AM a “disabled adult”!
There are days where I wish that I didn’t have Asperger’s Syndrome-just as there are days that I wish I was 5.8 rather than 5.2 or that my husband looked less like Dennis Franz and more like Mark Harmon.
Wishes are great-as long as they don’t get confused with reality.
Playing the victim every time someone treats me as “defective” doesn’t hurt them and doesn’t help me!

–I feel bad for you and for your being picked on in high school. You come across on this blog as being very friendly, social and intelligent. If it makes you feel any better, almost everyone is picked on–and many times quite brutally–for one reason or another in school. But you don’t know that until much later. And learning how not to let the jerks get you down is good preparation for the rest of your life.

Regarding the poll question, Who’s right?

I love Rush. Avid supporter. He went too far on this one. I emailed elrushbo during the rant and said stop it. He didn’t and went on and on. He has a tendency to be very sophomoric with his humor at times and doesn’t seem to know when to stop. Sarah is right on here and Rush should drop the whole subject after an honest apology for carrying this too far. Go Sarah!!!

kingsjester on February 5, 2010 at 11:11 AM

I was listening to Limbaugh when he said this. It was a freaking joke! This is why right-wingers have the stereotype of having no sense of humor and a gigantic stick up their butt!

He said that when Rahm referred to Dems as retards, Rahm apologized to the Special Olympics for lumping them in with the Dems.

He even explained later to a mother of a mentally challenged boy who called in and said it was demeaning anyways. Rush said that it’s similar to the joke where someone compared lawyers to rats, and then had to apologize to the rats for lumping them in with the lawyers.

The mother could not wrap her head around this because she is emotionally attached to the subject. Even after he explained it a million times she still found it demeaning. He should’ve told her to get a sense of humor and hung up on her.

It’s like if a comedian made a rape joke and someone in the audience who had been raped found that joke to be distasteful. You can’t go around limiting your comedy because someone might be offended. You just have to go for it.

What’s that you say? “A rape joke”? How can rape be funny? To quote George Carlin: “Rape can be funny. Picture Elmer Fudd raping Porky Pig!”.

If she were going to “dish it to Rush”, she’d have called him out by name. She has no trouble doing that. Just ask Barry O’Jug-ears. That she kept her criticism in generic terms displayed her general condemnation of the intentionally hurtful use of the term. She did not call out Rush because she knows what Rush’s point was; to slam Rahm Emanuel. She gets it. You don’t.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 12:30 PM

It’s time to update the headline on this. As kingsjester pointed out, Rush has cleared up the confusion. Sarah’s spokesperson was pressured several times by Politico to come down on Rush, yet she kept making the generic condemnation on purpose. She knew they were trying to slime Rush with this. He meant it as satire–he was not using it to demean Down Syndrome or anyone else suffering from any kind of mental retardation (other conditions produce it).

And for anyone who wants to know, a dear friend of mine adopted years ago beautiful twin girls from Vietnam who are mentally handicapped due to their being almost starved in the orphanage they spent their first two years in. Despide the handicap, they are loving, sweet, caring young ladies now. So I’m a little sensitive to the pejorative myself. But I at least understand the concept of satire, which is one of Rush’s most potent weapons against the left. As he himself says, heaven knows the MSM is not going to tell us when liberals screw up.

The MSM does not understand when it is being skewered by Rush, who takes delight in doing it daily to demonstrate their obtuseness and idiocy. Sarah understands what Rush was up to. The MSM is too brain-dead to understand.

I tend to use the term “Libtard” and “Libtarded” often. It’s more to do with a description of the lack of their ability to even comprehend that things like Socialism are not for the greater good than comparing them to the mentally handicapped. They do seem brainwashed, in a way mentally handicapped, and then angry rather than rational when confronted with ideas or facts contrary to their meme. Their world view retards their ability to adapt to difficult circumstances.

P.S. I’m aware that’s very stereotypical. Liberalism is a mental disorder. A self-hating, death-obsessed, narcissistic victim-hood mental disorder.

I often find Rush’s way of expressing himself to be repulsive. I agree with him on nearly every subject, but I don’t listen very often because his is so crude.

Rush’s use of this term was political speech… making fun a a political person and a way of thinking.

Rahm was using it as a personal insult. He was right by the way. Technically. The left insisting on pushing the public option was a “retarded” ie– below average intelligence– way of thinking, both politically speaking and intellectually speaking. In fact similar to Einstein definition of lunacy. Another appropriate psychological term I believe.

Apprently, Sarah and Rush are fine, the MSM, liberals, and other idiots that don’t like Rush, probably don’t listen to his show, or just don’t ‘get him, and yes, I’m talking to all you yellow bellied flower munchers that hate Rush because he’s too mean, are limping this story along.
They are just trying to split the conservative movement.
All is well and the revolution marches on.

HornetSting on February 5, 2010 at 12:58 PM

That explains quite a bit. Another insecure, bitter female.

Hey you are welcome that we allowed you to vote.

Sorry for the double post, but I got ‘meaner’ on the second one. :)

Really? I am not listening to Rush, but it sounds as though he “got it,” too.

Wrong is wrong.

It took Sarah Palin “standing up” to Rush for you to decide that she is “principled”?? Where the hell have you been for the last year and a half?

Under a rock?

We all know how incredibly brave one must be to slam Rush in the MSM. I don’t call it principled, i call it calculated.

snoopicus on February 5, 2010 at 1:02 PM

As the father of a special young lady, it tickles me to see those “righteously indignant” rush to the aid of the developmentally delayed when they normally would not give them the time of day. Rahmbo was smacked by the POC of his own party. Heh. Both Sarah and Rush are good people and this has been much ado about nothing. Bloviating Trolls.

scalleywag on February 4, 2010 at 7:01 PM

There is nothing more boring and tedious than the so-called free thinkers who show up on Palin threads and then either complain that people support Sarah Palin or are commenting. Really, what is the point? Besides being a waste of time.

alliebobbitt on February 5, 2010 at 1:42 PM

My friend, that is a severe dereliction of duty on your part since she sent it out last night. You are now unfairly stoking the fires on this issue.

that’s what he does, tech, he’s the godzilla of trolls.

james23 on February 5, 2010 at 1:43 PM

I think both Palin and Limbaugh fumbled this one. The left is reeling right now – Palin scored a punch on Rahm, but as others have already said, she set herself up now to have to castigate *anyone* that uses the word – and the press will make sure she has to comment now on *every* right-winger that utters it or ever has been known to utter it.

Limbaugh simply stepped up to be the first.

It’s dumb because it proves nothing. As I said, ‘the left’ is reeling – the last thing ‘the right’ needs right now is to provide distraction from that and ammunition for ‘the left’ to use in order to change the subject.

Midas on February 4, 2010 at 6:47 PM

This is a good point. Both Palin and Limbaugh know how to manipulate headlines and keep their soapboxes. Palin most likely would like everyone, regardless of political party affiliation, to quit referring to special needs Americans as idiots or imbeciles or morons or stupid. Limbaugh made it clear he was quoting Emanuel, and Palin has commented exactly as any of her supporters expected her to. The last part of your analysis was correct; the Democrats wanted to change the subject rather than look insensitive and cruel.

alliebobbitt on February 5, 2010 at 1:57 PM

Jimbo3 on February 5, 2010 at 2:44 PM

Obviously Palin took it personally

When I grew up, ‘retarded’ was the proper person for someone whose development was ‘retarded’, i.e. less than what it should be.

Because of natural human instincts to crack jokes and pick on people, the proper name was revised into the slang ‘retard’ for use as an insult to use against retarded people, and fully functional people.

I understand she takes it personally, because of her child.

However, I am tired of the speech control. Does Palin call her child ‘retarded’? Probably not. She may call him challeged, disabled, less than perfect but more than special, or simply beloved.

People calling an idea, or a bunch of hooligans ‘retards’ were not picking on her child.

However, I understand I will not win on this one. Everyone with a cause has a set of words we are not allowed to use or we will be called hurtful. I do not use the phrase ‘retard’ in public because I donot want the anti-retardo’s to beat me to a pulp.

The problem is whatever new, polite word is substituted for the condition, eventually comes to stand for that condition in the public mind, and the public will use metaphors.

I was on a bus years ago when a fight broke out because a man described a woman as a ‘Black’. The black lady argued the polite term ‘as ‘Negro’. Today you would get beat up for describing a Nobel Prize winner as a Negro.

Inherent in this is the question how people are insulted by someone calling them, black, negro, etc. No one can insult me by calling me by my skin color, heighth, weight, ethnicity etc. When you are proud of your reality, no one can insult you with it.

A friend in customer service got a caller who said he was the most disgusting, idiotic, incompetent etc person she had ever met. His answer: a cheery “Why thank you!”

portlandon on February 5, 2010 at 12:41 PM

Well, if you consider AP a conservative… But I agree, I wish to heck they would just ignore this stuff. It’s distracting from legitimate issues, and annoying because it just encourages the libs.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 4:17 PM

Sarah, you’re retarded for bringing this up.

This is not the kind of battle that conservatives have a leg to stand on.

spmat on February 5, 2010 at 4:58 PM

Rahm was using it as a personal insult. He was right by the way. Technically. The left insisting on pushing the public option was a “retarded” ie– below average intelligence– way of thinking, both politically speaking and intellectually speaking.

petunia on February 5, 2010 at 12:47 PM

The distinction I would make is that mentally retarded people are born that way, whereas libs become that way out of choice. So although I would never refer to a mentally retarded person as a “retard”, I admit I have no problem with that derisive term being used to describe liberals.

kg598301 on February 5, 2010 at 4:58 PM

I have many friends whose husbands exited when faced with this particular challenge. The women are raising these children.

I don’t think it’s “bitter.” It’s realism. And I’m personally glad to see Sarah speak out.

It’s NOT OK.

AnninCA on February 5, 2010 at 12:11 PM

I know lots of folks and do not know any whose husband left them when they had a special needs child. I do not doubt it happens but I think you are inventing a story. That is unless the water is tainted in your circle of friends.

For the love of God people… Is everyone gone crazy ? All you all retards ? When, oh when will we as Conservatives understand that Political Correctness is killing America ? What’s next ? We can’t call someone an idiot, a real idiot might get “offended”… We can’t call a female dog a bitch because a real bitch might get offended ? We lost 13 brave Americans in Texas due to PC, we are losing the war against Terror OH WAIT! I can’t say TERROR or TERRORIST, might offend one… ALL OF YOU that are offended by the retard comment of Rham or Rsuh need to get a fricking life… I have never seen the wussification of America as much as I have in the last 4 or 5 years… An entire generation of people to affraid to talk or argue or discuss because of FEAR of offending some group or another…

Our Fathers and Grandfathers would be ashamed of ALL of us wussies… Too affraid to tell the f-ing truth, to affraid to be called a “racist” got America a horrible and dangerous POTUS.

Screw all of you that are offended by Rhalm or Rush…

Maybe you will be in the crosshairs of the next Fort Hood killer because someone was too affraid to tell the truth and call someone, anyone what the hell they are…

I think that’s the smart response.

But I do think that Palin has a responsibility to speak out. This obviously is one of her deep-felt issues.

Had she not called out Rahm, Rush, etc., would she be taken seriously on this issue?

I think not.

She spoke out. She did the right thing.
