Video: The freaky deaky Carly Fiorina “sheep” attack ad
posted at 6:43 pm on February 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
You want to put a guy in a sheep costume with red robot eyes and have him crawl around a pasture for awhile? Sure, I’ll link it.
I get the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” metaphor, but Time’s right that there’s quite a bit of mockery of fiscal conservatives at the beginning too. Which is … odd in this political climate, even in California. Everyone likes to believe they’re fiscally conservative just as everyone likes to believe they have a sense of humor, whether it’s true or not. Is goofing on that the way to go, especially in a state that’s now extremely budget-conscious? Or is the point simply that there are no true “pure” fiscal conservatives? In which case, why am I supposed to much care about Tom Campbell’s own deviations from purity?
Geraghty thinks it’s genius, but I came away from it wondering more what Fiorina was thinking than what Campbell was thinking. Not good.
Update: Like I said, everyone — and I do mean everyone — thinks they’re fiscally conservative.

leftnomore on February 3, 2010 at 6:44 PM
So the lady that made your printer crappy also made this sheep video?
Awesome.
tetriskid on February 3, 2010 at 6:46 PM
That was awesome.
terryannonline on February 3, 2010 at 6:48 PM
Maybe that was Arnold in the sheep suit… impersonations are what he’s best at.
leftnomore on February 3, 2010 at 6:50 PM
nice phallus pedestal
takeaway:
He screws you then it all comes crashing down.
The Race Card on February 3, 2010 at 6:50 PM
Lmao, so so bad.
nickj116 on February 3, 2010 at 6:51 PM
That was racist…the sheep on the pedestal had a black face…/
d1carter on February 3, 2010 at 6:51 PM
Notice how many times the word “men” is said with a negative connotation at the beginning. She also played the gender card a few months ago with Chuck Devore. She seems to have a problem with men.
Mark1971 on February 3, 2010 at 6:52 PM
Why is an ad for a California Senatorial candidate being narrated by a guy with a New York accent?
Emperor Norton on February 3, 2010 at 6:52 PM
This is your political attack ad.
This is your political attack ad on drugs.
sammypants on February 3, 2010 at 6:52 PM
So, being a sheep is a good thing?
Jeff2161 on February 3, 2010 at 6:52 PM
The metaphor doesn’t really work. Real fiscal conservatives are sheep?
Asher on February 3, 2010 at 6:52 PM
New Orleans coroner race probably has the freakiest ad i\’ve ever seen:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRgCOXaiDjQ
BJ on February 3, 2010 at 6:53 PM
Was this made by a crappy art school student? Wow. The deserves to lose for this video alone.
portlandon on February 3, 2010 at 6:53 PM
I think there’s a good chance that Geraghty was being tongue-in-cheek.
Karl on February 3, 2010 at 6:53 PM
Bah ram ewe. Bah ram ewe. To your sheep, your fleece, your clan be true. Bah ram ewe.
capejasmine on February 3, 2010 at 6:54 PM
Well this ad does come on the heels of opening the pot superstore…coincidence?
Skt510 on February 3, 2010 at 6:55 PM
Let’s hook her up with Olberman! LOL
capejasmine on February 3, 2010 at 6:55 PM
It’s the reverent introductory words that creeped me out the most.
exception on February 3, 2010 at 6:55 PM
Kinky is right. Surely this isn’t a TV ad. 3 minutes?
AnninCA on February 3, 2010 at 6:56 PM
I approve. Very unique and effective.
Narutoboy on February 3, 2010 at 6:58 PM
These kind of ads bug the crap out of me. At the end of the day, we’re all on the same team. Save the sensationalism for the democrats. Also, this ad may work on those outside California, but everybody here knows that California is just about ungovernable. It’s not Tom Campbell’s fault that taxes had to go up. What are you gonna do with a $40Billion deficit? Tell the unions they’re getting a pay cut? Default on muni bonds? Tell kids that K-12 is now just K-9? This disingenuousness has no place. It’s cowardly. I did dig the red eyes though. Stony.
Pablo Snooze on February 3, 2010 at 6:59 PM
Anxious, confused, annoyed then disappointed. This video hits me just like that whole bloody state does.
It is fine for them.
As pols go, I like Carly. She is slick. And that ain’t all bad.
What would they do if Governor Palin had done this ad?
IlikedAUH2O on February 3, 2010 at 6:59 PM
Ad’s a little weird, but anything that paints Campbell as a Grade A phony is fine by me.
I’ve caught his act here for years – he makes David Gergen look like a right-wing “dead-ender”.
DIABLO would have been a better tag- and totally accurate to boot.
jjshaka on February 3, 2010 at 6:59 PM
Weird! Did the guys from the SAW movies direct this?
Jim-Rose on February 3, 2010 at 6:59 PM
This ad will be condemned by the Furry Anti-defamation League.
Karl on February 3, 2010 at 6:59 PM
The juxtaposition of all those sheep and pigs at 5pm just made me hungry for Chinese food…
dr-klei on February 3, 2010 at 7:00 PM
It doesn’t matter – Jerry Brown who is technically undeclared at the moment leads all the Republican candidates in polls. Yes, the man who earned the moniker “Governor Moonbeam” when he was last in that office, is the leading candidate. His policies ended all freeway construction in the state for 15 years – putting us into perpetual traffic jams 365 days a year.
Carly has enough of her own baggage where she should be wary of going negative on Tom Campbell. The wolf (Jerry Brown) is sitting right over there licking his chops…
in_awe on February 3, 2010 at 7:01 PM
Well it’s certainly unique.
Is Carly calling Fiscons sheep, or the people ?
MetaThought on February 3, 2010 at 7:01 PM
I actually love this ad. It delivered the message…and that is the goal of any ad.
Chudi on February 3, 2010 at 7:01 PM
Awesome. Campbell is fake and everyone knows it. I’m not her biggest fan, but Fiorina will be decently conservative on the stuff that matters and is a good fit for California. I also think she can beat Boxer, where as Campbell has a crap record at winning elections.
malan89 on February 3, 2010 at 7:01 PM
Fiorina and Campbell are running for Senator. Jerry Brown is running for Governor. Duh.
Emperor Norton on February 3, 2010 at 7:02 PM
Looks a like a dumb ad from the McCain team.
therightwinger on February 3, 2010 at 7:02 PM
But the ad claims that Fiorina herself is a fiscal conservative at the end. It seems to be more about calling him a false one than mocking fiscal conservatism.
amerpundit on February 3, 2010 at 7:02 PM
You keep using that word…
Seven Percent Solution on February 3, 2010 at 7:03 PM

Moonbeam coming back for another round?
thomasaur on February 3, 2010 at 7:06 PM
Weird ad, but I sure as hell wouldn’t vote for Tom Campbell after watching it!
rockmom on February 3, 2010 at 7:08 PM
Carly Fiorina is psycho. Sheep with red, beady eyes? This ad is crazy. Why would I want her in Washington?
cubachi on February 3, 2010 at 7:08 PM
Maybe I’m biased but I think Republicans always have better ads. I thought Brown, McDonnell, and McCain in ’08 had pretty good ads compared to their Democrat opponents.
terryannonline on February 3, 2010 at 7:09 PM
Watching this ad made me hungry
for
sheesh kababs
mmmmmmmm
macncheez on February 3, 2010 at 7:09 PM
Too long and too Monty Python-lite without the needed wit.
Should have stopped with “wanted to raise raise our gas tax… 32 cents a gallon…”
That’s indictment enough.
Too much information in an ad becomes an ear-shutter.
profitsbeard on February 3, 2010 at 7:10 PM
Awesomely awesome.
Rode Werk on February 3, 2010 at 7:10 PM
What does it say when even a hack like Fiorina has to pretend to be a fiscal conservative in CA?
Pretty funny.
Devore is the only adult in this race.
Unless you like videos about sheep.
tetriskid on February 3, 2010 at 7:11 PM
It had me up until the guy in the sheep suit, and it went on too long, but I liked it, I give it a 7.
RedRedRice on February 3, 2010 at 7:11 PM
I liked it, but not so sure it was a good idea to call conservatives …sheep
Conservative Voice on February 3, 2010 at 7:12 PM
Actually, I took the ad to say that if you “fall” for Campbell’s fake fiscal conservatism then you’re a sheep if you vote for him. Not really that complex to get.
RedRedRice on February 3, 2010 at 7:16 PM
California deserves this idiot. You tied it, you ride it.
Fletch54 on February 3, 2010 at 7:16 PM
OK, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen this week and this week’s been a doozy.
3-1/2 minutes of ovine analogies and some idiot at the end under a rug.
Please.
nico on February 3, 2010 at 7:16 PM
Uhhhhh… seems like she said that Campbell was not a fiscal conservative. Took a long time to say it but he’s done a lot of baaaad things!
Vince on February 3, 2010 at 7:17 PM
It had a bit of an Animal farm feel to it, but not quite.
mizflame98 on February 3, 2010 at 7:19 PM
Because she’s not Barbara Boxer. I am not much of a Fiorina fan, but I will vote for her in the general election. Same goes for Campbell. The best person in the race is Devore, but he probably doesn’t have enough cash or name recognition to win the primary.
Mark1971 on February 3, 2010 at 7:20 PM
……That was awesome!

I can’t wait to see what the commentary is above, and have already remove all food and beverages away from the immediate vicinty.
But, just as I recovered from the intro and started listening to, the all-be-it overly dramatic voice over, a serious litany of of reasonable questions. And then….
Back to the macabre.
Flame out. Houston, we have a problem
Archimedes on February 3, 2010 at 7:22 PM
Perhaps Fiorina wants people to think she doesn’t believe in hers / group identity politics

You just can’t beat the guy crawling through a field on his hands and knees in a sheep suit.
This is what I want from serious politicians.

Good point, sound advice.
Archimedes on February 3, 2010 at 7:32 PM
Yup. She can throw the gender card at Campbell, get him out of the race and then watch as the female vote goes to DeVore.

That was weird.

Hilarious. Way too long though, they just need to bring out the robot sheep early on and hit em with the facts.
El_Terrible on February 3, 2010 at 7:35 PM
Now we know where AP was the past few days. Someone had to play the sheep.
txag92 on February 3, 2010 at 7:35 PM
Contrast this with the Bush/Cheney wolf ad.

Tom Campbell is a great friend of the Islamic radicals. A real Rino, anti American loser.

FactsofLife on February 3, 2010 at 7:38 PM
It is a good ad for knocking down Campbell though -funny yet harsh on him.
NTWR on February 3, 2010 at 7:38 PM
Tom Campbell is Satan!!! Or Damien or something.
That voiceover is a bit ominous.
What’s Carly’s solution?
PattyJ on February 3, 2010 at 7:39 PM
Carly will win. Haters will cry. Real conservatives will rejoice. America will be happy.
Narutoboy on February 3, 2010 at 7:40 PM
Regardless whether the sheep thing works if AP knew anything about California political history he’d know Carly nails Tom C. perfectly. He’s a Total RINO phony. Pro spending, pro-abortion, pro-gay rights… you name it. He’s a complete loser.
No, he is NOT Hugh Hewitt’s Tom Campbell. That’s another guy.
rcl on February 3, 2010 at 7:40 PM
The rest of the country would vote for the California secessionist candidate.
ignatzk on February 3, 2010 at 7:45 PM
Wow. If Tom Campbell’s cozy relationship with CAIR is exposed he’s sunk. Hopefully the true conservative Chuck DeVore will win- he’s got a sense of humor, too.
Go Chuck go!

Creepy. That ad made me feel somewhat ambivalent about my favorite sweater.

Hey Carla… the sheeple thingy was a baaaaaaaad idea.
katy on February 3, 2010 at 7:52 PM
That was way too long and overdone.
RepubChica on February 3, 2010 at 7:53 PM
I only wish there was video of the proposal meeting for this ad…
“Trust me guys, the term FCINO is totally going to catch on. People will totally relate to a demon sheep.”
tetriskid on February 3, 2010 at 7:53 PM
Moderates won’t buy the message, either. The budget was stuck. CA has a crazy 2/3rd’s requirement. The State was stuck and issuing IOU’s, which some of the Banks, unlike in the past, were refusing to honor. That meant big, big problems.
Tom flipped on the promise to block taxes and voted for the budget. People came back and told the State, resoundingly, NO, by voting down all 5 tax propositions.
He was considered a “turncoat,” but moderates were sick of the deadlock.
That’s the problem with 2/3rds vote laws. It just ends up ridiculous.
AnninCA on February 3, 2010 at 7:54 PM
That voice over sounded a lot like Robert Dovi.
katy on February 3, 2010 at 7:54 PM
Longish.
And weird.
pugwriter on February 3, 2010 at 7:55 PM
Maybe it’s a California thing. This add is weird but the people in that state can embrace it because they’re weird too. Sorry for offending any CA posters here.
mizflame98 on February 3, 2010 at 7:57 PM
Apology not accepted. Totally offended.
/sarc
But without the 2/3rds law we’d have tax increases as often as Queen Pelosi has Botox injections.
NTWR on February 3, 2010 at 8:01 PM
Good one katy!! Kinda put me to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

In the Peoples Republik of Kahleefornyuh, the anti capitalists are in no ways tired, or repentant, or quiet, or out of the legislating and budgeting process.

I liked it.

No offense taken. No apology required.

I live in Kalifornia, but, trust me, no offense taken. This state is about two tacos short of a combination plate.
pugwriter on February 3, 2010 at 8:04 PM
What?
Ugly on February 3, 2010 at 8:05 PM
I don’t know, really. The law has had an odd effect. The legislature is dominated by Dems, and the GOP is truly a bunch of nutcases.
AnninCA on February 3, 2010 at 8:05 PM
Oh, c’mon. The Dems aren’t nutcases? In the California legislature? You can’t be serious.

Demon sheeeep!!!Love it. Fiorina? UGH.
di butler on February 3, 2010 at 8:16 PM
Oh my! This lame on so many levels. The message is a good one, the delivery sucks. This ad is 3:21 in length, way too long, it also comes across like something a Liberal would do.
mrpeabody on February 3, 2010 at 8:21 PM
Every time they raise the RATES they get less REVENUE, because every time they raise rates people just up and leave.
These guys are just determined to loot their way to solvency, and it won’t happen. If we didn’t have a 2/3 requirement you’d be taxed to read this, Ann.
Chris_Balsz on February 3, 2010 at 8:23 PM
I’m surprised she hasn’t yet come out with an ad that says, “Vote for me, I have a vagina”.
I only hope CA Republicans have the sense enough to vote for Campbell.
The Ugly American on February 3, 2010 at 8:25 PM
I love the way they calling him by his first name. “Tom” “Tom” “Tom” I especially love the way she plays the sex card almost immediately in the ad. At least she’s consistent with that meme.
If she wins the primary (and I think she will) can’t wait to see if she attacks Barbara Boxer this same way. Use snakes for that ad, Carly? Maybe clowns?
