Video: Olby breaks big scoop on Palin’s books
posted at 8:48 am on February 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Darn it, and I didn’t even get named Worst Person in the World for writing at the “one of the greatest sources for sophistry on the web,” according to Keith Olbermann. Olby picks up on ABC’s non-scoop from Sarah Palin’s use of her book as a donor incentive by getting enraged over Palin’s supposed collection of $6300 in royalties from purchasing $63,000 books from donations to her PAC. Does Olbermann actually know that Palin collected $6300 in royalties, or any other amount? Of course not. What do you expect from an MS-NBC news broadcast – actual news?
First, let’s just mull over the accusation that Hot Air publishes sophistry from the man who called Scott Brown “racist” and “homophobic” and declared pickup trucks “racist.” This prompted Jon Stewart to rip his strident desperation, and his boss had to protect him from his own colleagues in a memo imposing a gag order on other MS-NBC hosts:
But there are also more subjective signs that Olbermann’s stridency and lack of proportion are alienating some of his natural allies. Quite a few eyebrows elevated last week when Jon Stewart, in a parody of one of Olbermann’s “Special Comment” segments, called out the newsman for going way over the top in his denunciations of Republican Senator-elect Scott Brown of Massachusetts. The criticism was all the more remarkable, given that Stewart and Olbermann usually take the same side on most issues, especially when it comes to Fox News and the Republicans.
Olbermann’s overheated rhetoric also drew a sharp response from Joe Scarborough, MSNBC’s house conservative, who called his fellow host’s attack on Brown “reckless” and “sad.” The exchange (and a few earlier, similar incidents) inspired network president Phil Griffin to issue a stern memo admonishing his charges: “We do not publicly criticize our colleagues. This kind of behavior is unprofessional and will not be tolerated.”
The royalties issue is really a red herring, but even had she taken normal royalties, she’s a private citizen and not an officeholder. It’s not any sort of a conflict of interest for an author to collect royalties on her own books. But that’s assuming she did, and as Kevin McCullough explained, it’s more likely she didn’t in order to get more books to give to bigger donors:
If Palin has a somewhat traditional deal, she would receive royalties on copies purchased (even by her) up to a certain percentage of that list price. It is also likely that there is a drop off point at which she can (or her PAC) pay for books at even a greater reduction and automatically forfeit her royalties.
In fairness she probably paid somewhere between $4-$7 per book. Likely without royalties received and that would have purchased some 10-15,000 books.
Palin’s book has sold over 2 million copies. I don’t think she’s scrounging for an extra $6300, although with Olbermann’s ratings falling as low as his “journalistic” ethics, it wouldn’t surprise me if Olby starts scrounging sometime soon.
Update: Andrew Malcolm wonders if the writing is on the wall for Olby.

KO is to TV News what hardcore pornography is to print media. You don’t really know how to describe it, but once you see it, you just know it is really wrong. His ratings in comparison to other politically oriented programs are a testament to the low value that the public places upon his contribution to discourse.
Enjoy your time at the bottom KO. Right where you put yourself.

Paul Harvey Jr. lined Olby up to substitute for his Dad once..once. Nobody else must have been available. I enjoy the meltdown at MSNBC. Squish Joe Scarborough should have known better than to stay there during its ideological descent into madness. Comcast needs to purge the place when it takes over.
kingsjester on February 3, 2010 at 9:02 AM
Journalists who are engaged in journalism don’t criticize each other, but MSNBC is for opinionism (to coin a word). Which is fine, but different hosts have different opinions and you can’t muzzle that and claim authenticity. Heck, Glen Beck has criticized Bill O’Reilly despite both being on Fox. MSNBC has deep problems throughout management, which probably explains why they continue to employ the racist Keith Olbermann (who views things in terms of race, much like our racist president — bowing to certain leaders based upon their perceived ethnicity even if they are American citizens).
But then again, one of the tenets of fascism is racism. (And Mussolini was a racist, even though he did not send Jews to the ovens.)

From Inside Cable News:
John Gibson used to fill in for Keith on MSNBC. On the radio one day, Gibson said that one of the reason he guest-hosted so often is that there were many days when the MSNBC limo would go to pick up Keith and he would be in his bathtub and refuse to come out. Word on the street is that he was not speaking metaphorically.

This is the reality for Keef: his ratings will sink his show. MSNBC is a business and they are about making money. In the short run, management will take a hit for Olby, but in the long run he is toast. And he knows this. If his ratings do not improve, his show will end. It’s nothing personal against Keef, it’s just business.

You know, What’s going on at MSNBC is kind of a frightening, almost Khmer Rouge type of regime, where they’re going around to people, sort of switching their minds around saying, if you’re not far left, you’re not left enough.
That, plus I think everybody recognizes the symbolism with Olbermann’s eyeglasses. It’s a little bit of coded racism going on.

The latest ratings charts would indicate that MSNBC has flat-lined. While CNN is still well below Fox, a pulse of life can still be seen. When Fox has a slight drop, a small rise can be seen in CNN’s numbers. Whereas, MSNBC has been on a downward path for months and now holding steady at numbers that would indicate employees and their extended family members are the only people watching that trash.
When will MSNBC change direction, or is their whole business model based upon Obama subsidies via our tax dollars?
For an hour, I almost forgot that Olbermann and Maddow are not the same person…..

JusDreamin on February 3, 2010 at 10:16 AM
I just can’t watch the video so I have to ask if Olbermann is making a stink about any perceived royalties she receives from buying her own books? Think about it. If she pays full price for the book she received a percentage of the listed price as royalties. Doesn’t sound like a good investment to me. In other words, she’s not scamming the system if she’s paying more than what she receives.

I can tolerate Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. Actually find much of their program interesting, even if I do occasionally throw things at the flat screen.
Thought I was going to like Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd’s morning show, but she has turned out to be a little mockingbird for The One and the Democrats in general. Makes her look like an empty-headed ditz.
Beyond that, Shuster, Schultz, Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow should all be returned to the asylum and given limited crayola privileges.

I am always amused at how Ogerman is able to slander as he does and does not get sued.
Ogerman, I refuse to acknowledge him with any term of respect, even the term Mr. because he has deserve none.
Ogerman prostitutes himself as an elite news anchor. First he is a heavy burden to the network that weights everyone down. Second, part of his act is appear elite is to use a vocabulary that is nothing more than taking every word in a simple thought or statement and submitting them to an elaborate spell and grammar check program and using every alternate for a single word in a thesaurus to create a string of blather that is not fit for human consumption.
I bet if you looked on his belt you would not find a Blackberry other other PDA. You would probably find a coin changer because he is such a cheap trick, I am not sure who would hit the ground faster, him or a quarter.

Liberalism is the perfect vehicle for hateful people like Olbie and Michael Moore to win revenge on a world they hate. We see the same thing from the lefties who post here so often, though there are truly decent people who are liberal, too–people who don’t spew hate but rather feel government is a better answer.
People like Olbie aren’t happy with their own successes. In their hate, they need to knock down the rest of the world to a lower level so that they can feel more superior. And that works best when they’ve reached the pinnacle of their abilities.
These libs also either lack the nerve or have enough psychological blocks to avoid what other, lesser people do when they’re full of rage and hate at Olbie’s level: pick up an AK47 and open fire on schoolyards or their places of work.
I bet that if Palin took all the proceeds from her book sales and donated them to charities, Olbie would probably call it a ‘publicity stunt’. He doesn’t want to be fair. He wants only to revile those he hates, which is almost everyone, it seems.
