Unemployment rose in over 80% of metro areas in December

posted at 10:12 am on February 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

At least this time, the AP didn’t use the word “unexpectedly.”  Joblessness rose in 306 metropolitan areas, over 80% of all metro areas, close to double the number from November.  Only 41 showed improvement, and even those may only be temporary (h/t HA reader DogSoldier):

Unemployment rose in most cities and counties in December, signaling that companies remain reluctant to hire even as the economy recovers.

The unemployment rate rose in 306 of 372 metro areas, the Labor Department said Tuesday. The rate fell in 41 and was unchanged in 25. That’s worse than November, when the rate fell in 170 areas, rose in only 154 and was unchanged in 48. …

Joblessness topped 10 percent in 138 metro areas, up from 125 in November but below last year’s peak of 144 areas in June.

Even the good news is tempered.  Detroit and Warren, two Michigan centers of automaking, both improved in December as automakers replenish inventory sold during the Cash for Clunkers program.  Both areas still had double-digit unemployment (15.7% and 14.3%), and both may have bad times ahead, according to a Moody’s analyst once inventories peak.  In fact, this corroborates the gains shown in GDP in the fourth quarter, where over 3.3% of the 5.7% gain came from inventory management rather than actual sales.

In two days, the January unemployment figures will be announced.  Analysts expect a gain of 5,000 jobs and an uptick in unemployment to 10.1%.  Our economy has to create more than 100,000 jobs per month to keep up with population growth in the working age demographic.  While a 5,000 job gain would be better than a negative number, in real terms it still means losing ground.  The key will be to see how many people exit the job market in January.

Just read that the average search time for professionals is 6 to 8 months to find a job.

Leaving aside the point that “average” is probably not the right term for a range…now that I’m in the middle of that window, it was actually somewhat encouraging.

I’ll take a stab at it: “The economy grew again last quarter, so the recession is over thanks to Obama, but employment is a very very very very lagging indicator”

forest on February 3, 2010 at 10:28 AM

In my high-tech industry(s), companies have been restructuring their businesses the last several years by utilizing already existing turn-key manufacturing plants in China, India, Taiwan, etc. This isn’t cheap to get implemented. Actually it’s quite a pain but once executed, there is no turning back. I don’t see these jobs ever returning to the U.S.

I was recently talking to a neighbor who had just hired a roofer to put a new roof on his house. I had mine done last year by the same local roofing company.
We have exactly the same model house, same size roof, etc.
We got the same, identical package (same shingle, same warranty, etc).

My neighbor paid $1000 more than I did.
He was quite unhappy when he found this out.
He voted for Obama.

It did not occur to me immediately, but when I got home and started thinking about it, the roofer probably had to raise his prices because of Obama’s war on small businesses. He needed to cover the cost of what he expects to be higher taxes that he will have to pay.

When this issue comes up again, I will have to remind my neighbor that it’s because of the guy who he helped elect that everything is going to get a lot more expensive.

Buy the truth and do not sell it, get wisdom, discipline and understanding. Prov 23:23

God taught me more and more every day as I studied over this and looked for all the instances where the words “truth” “wisdom” “understanding” and “discipline” appeared in the Bible.

End result: House sold right on time, for more than I expected to get out of it, in the middle of a hard homesale downturn.

save America from all those unnamed Bush policies of the last 8 years!

Sad ironic truth. Give a progressive inch, and lose all. NAFTA, Bail-outs (beginning with families of 9/11 Twin Tower employees getting bribed with tax dollars, as if tax payers owe terrorist victims pay-offs for silence, as if the wealthiest victims with their own life insurance policies deserve federal pay-offs as well, but others do not), DHS, amnesty for illegal aliens and broadcasting the “vigilante” tag on law abiding conservatives, TARP, and the executive-order “granting” the Sec.Treasurer unconstitutional powers to function as an autonomous Czar over the treasury and economy, given explicit ties to Goldman Sachs.

Bush’s experienced administration knowingly gift wrapped socialism for Obama’s administration to exploit.

American Citizens have Constitutional sovereignty so long as we value it. Our Founding Fathers knew better than to create a bureaucracy without checks and balances and limited powers.

As a matter of fact, maybe yes. I haven’t noticed in the last month but some of the clinics and nursing homes in extreme northern Wisconsin and the western UP of Michigan had been advertising for registered nurses and PAs. They were even offering signing bonuses last year. But, you have to like semi-remoteness, cold weather and lots of snow for six months a year, along with five months of bugs.

As I recall the ads were running for the areas around Eagle River and Minoqua, Wisconsin, Iron Mountain, Marquette, Wakefield and Ironwood, Michigan. Not sure if that has changed recently. I’ll check if I can.

[Maybe HotAir could run a semi-permanent list somewhere where we could list jobs we see advertised, for people who are willing to relocate. See my next post, below]

Why o why is Texas seem to be doing better than most states? Does anyone have any ideas? I am at a lost at how to explain this.

WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 11:24 AM

No state income tax for starters. A business friendly climate. Tort reform has helped with medical costs. It’s along the Gulf of Mexico, so there’s a giant oil and gas industry. And we certainly execute more than our fair share of convicted murderers, so we’re in no way soft on crime.

Doughboy on February 3, 2010 at 11:42 AM

And I’m sure that if all they did was cut taxes and lower the deficit all this would just go away…

Sarcasm or not?

I’ll bet the cost of tarp and roofing shingles has increased since last year. Prices have gone up on raw materials for machine shops, on manufactured goods at market, and with increased taxes on services.

maverick muse on February 3, 2010 at 11:18 AM

The roofer did tell my neighbor that there had been some price increases on materials. But $1000? That’s about a 20% increase.

–Also, (i) relatively lower cost of living (and cost of employing employees), including relatively cheaper gas; (ii) easy access to large markets in Texas (Houston, DFW, San Antonio, Austin, among others) and elsewhere in the Midwest; (iii) easy access to large markets internationally (Mexico, DFW airport, etc.); (iv) relatively warm climate; and (v) pretty good workforce. I’m not sure the tort reform did a whole bunch generally for the economy (it did get about 100K doctors to move to Texas, if I remember correctly) and the premiums paid for health insurance have not decreased.

–Did your neighbor get three or more quotes? These roofers will usually try to get whatever they can when they make a sale.

It’s dry out there.

I drove around for four hours going to businesses to look for work.

Nothing.

blatantblue on February 3, 2010 at 10:34 AM

Interesting. Up here our snowmobile season/ski season is a bust compared to past seasons, even with plenty of snow. Retailers, resturants, motels, etc. are cutting back hours and employees. Some of the major businesses are just plain shutting their doors.

So I pick up the area shopping papers and see jobs advertised. Go figure. They are low wage jobs, but the cost of living is low here (except for heating bills).

Just as an example, for this week:

Full-time Secretarial/Administrative Assistant (with paid vacations and Health Insurance)- Ironwood, Michigan

Assistant Apartment Managers

Clinical Social Worker, Marshfield Clinic, Minoqua, Wisconsin (www.marshfieldclinic.jobs)

Cashier, Convenience Store, Mercer BP, Mercer, Wisconsin

Front Desk Help, America’s Best Value Inn, Ironwood, Michigan

Advertising Sales Executive, Ironwood Daily Globe, Ironwood, Michigan

Special Education Aide/Paraprofessional-Part-time, Ewen-Trout Creek School, Ewen, Michigan

Housekeeping, Head Supervisor, Comfort Inn, Ironwood, Michigan

Certified Nursing Assistants, Hurley, Wisconsin

Native American casinos hiring, off and on.

Repersentative of the kinds of ads I’m seeing every week. They aren’t much, but I’m surprised there is anything right now.

Problems will never go away, but smaller government will mean problems will be solved at the local level and not be nationalized. Solved by people you hae a vested interest in the solution, not someone that is 2500 miles away.

Did you ever watch the John Adams miniseries that was on HBO a couple years ago? If not, watch it. It is great. Better yet, read the book. But in one of the opening scenes John Adams and others in Boston think there is a fire, turns out to be the Boston Massacre, and everyone runs to help out. That does not happen today because we have outsourced caring for others to governments.

Don’t take this as “get rid of the fire deparment,” but the more government does for society, the less people feel attached to their community, state, and country.

WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Just asking, are there still tons of positions listed in the local fishwraps and on online jobsites in your area as well? Because I’m starting to suspect they’re as phony as a nine-dollar bill.

Dark-Star on February 3, 2010 at 10:58 AM

I’ve had several conversations with recruiters about this very subject. Often job reqs don’t get pulled in a timely fashion and the boards repost them after 30 days. Some are come ons as well and some alas are being used by companies to justify an H1-B hire, who work for considerably less than an equally skilled citizen.

For the record I have no problem with hiring H1-B candidates provided American citizens are fully employed, but the entire purpose for that guest worker program is to help employers find skilled workers. In our current circumstance this justification for hiring foreign workers is invalid.

Metro areas which no doubt voted heavily for Obama, and which inflict liberal Congress slobs on the rest of us. Suck it, city dwellers.

Moron. The first step is cutting taxes and reducing the deficit. The last resort would be saddling future generations with unsustainable debt. Obama, and you idiot minions of his, have it backwards. But this is your default psychological reality. Up is down, down is up, bad is good, good is bad, and fiscally responsibility is wrong.

God gravy! It’s a wonder you idiots don’t cross against traffic lights on a regular basis. Well, you would if it weren’t for the little “Walk” “Don’t Walk” lights at every street corner.

WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 12:24 PM

I’m inclined to agree, actually…though these days I wonder why more people don’t take those ideas to their logical conclusion.

Decentralization should be item #1 on any political activists agenda, left wing or right wing.

If the goal is absolute liberty and unfettered capitalism, one can apply anarchic principles with a focus on municipalities rather than larger governments to achieve it.

If the goal is a sustainable future system, one can apply anarchic principles with a focus on local voluntary collectives and technology rather than larger institutions to achieve it.

But certainly, one has to wonder why republicanism is so quick to scold democrats for their imposed schemes when the GOP would just as easily impose their own.

First of all, im from new york we cross against the light all the damn time…keeps the senses sharp ;-)

Anyway, why so mad? I was being pretty facetious…and even in the face of that you didn’t make an actual point. You argued against increasing the debt, when I hadn’t recommended that at all. You didnt say why cutting the deficit would help urban employment, you made no point at all. You should learn to focus, and maybe lighten up a little bit.

That poor bunny wabbit…… How is he going to feed his young ones?

UltimateBob on February 3, 2010 at 10:16 AM

Obowma’s redistributed wealth. The rabbit will go on welfare for almost two years, have 10 more kids and receive state financing for all of them at a taxpayer cost of $1,500 per child. Obowma will say it’s due to rabbits having been discriminated against at all those fancy- schmantzy dinners where they are the main course.

First part of last week, I heard Sam’s Club was laying off 10,000 and contracting out another 1,000 in the customer recruiting area of their business. Things must be getting real tight for businesses.
