Special Olympics to Rahm Emanuel: Apology not accepted
posted at 5:46 pm on February 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
Or rather: Apology unacceptable — literally.
Not a fight I would have picked, but it’s fun to watch Rahm squirm, I guess.
Seeking to damp down the controversy over Rahm Emanuel’s reported, months-old use of the word, a White House official yesterday told me and other reporters that Emanuel had called Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver to apologize.
“The apology was accepted,” the official said yesterday.
The vice president for communications at the Special Olympics, Kirsten Seckler, told me that this account of the conversation is “inaccurate.”
“Tim didn’t accept his apology,” she said. “Tim can’t do that. He can’t accept an apology on behalf of all people with disabilities.”
Having been informed that his apology can’t be accepted, Rahm duly apologized again and promised to sign an online pledge to end the use of “retarded.” Which is super, but (a) given what a sharp comic sensibility can do with the word, I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon, and (b) the fact that Rahm’s malice was directed at lefty activists and not at the mentally disabled is going to lead a lot of people to shrug this off. It’s a White House version of that South Park episode when the boys started calling obnoxious Harley riders “fags.” Is a slur that’s traditionally used to denigrate group A still offensive when it’s reappropriated for group B?

Why is it that they keep changing the words? It seams like the more they change them the worse they get.
I mean I would rather be called. Mentally Retarded (As in slow) than Intellectually Disabled. That can only be translated into stupid.
PCdom is bigoted at it’s core and new words are used to cover that fact up.

Just like with whites and blacks. Black is now African American. Before, hey your skin is a different color. Now, hey you’re a different kind of American. Of course that’s even changed again to Person of Color. In other words you have whites and others.

Which people could just as easily do while saying “developmentally disabled.” Except “retard” is quicker and easier to say. I remember kids doing the hand thing when I was in middle school whenever the bus passed by the special needs school, however I don’t see adults doing that.

I don’t care how many times he apologizes. He has to learn that if he’s going to pick up a paycheck working for someone of diminished capacity, he’s going to be respectful.

The real issue is Sarah Palin’s opportunistic word police hypocrisy I think… the lack of self-awareness she’s displayed in this affair is truly unbelievable, and what she’s revealed is that at heart she’s every bit as much the cajoling harridan as Bloomberg.
Shrieking for the man’s job over something he said in private a year ago.
That’s just not America, Sarah.

Now that I think about it…..doesn’t the Special Olympics host people of all disabilities not just mental ones? Should paraplegics be offended that Rahm considers them to be retarded?

When I was a child, my sibs, and I had a friend, with special needs. Her name was Debbie. We were a mere 8, 9, 10…around that age, and she was a teenager. She loved taking care of us. Of course she would never be a babysitter, but she loved coming down, and just playing with us, and keeping an eye on us for mom. We loved her back. We also remember the taunts of other neighborhood children, hurling “retard” at her on a daily basis. This word was never used in kindness toward her. Always with malice, and cruelty.
I can see why the word offends parents, or anyone close to those peope with mental disablities. I won’t use the word retard, not because I believe it’s a bad word, but in the tone with which I’ve heard it used.
Rahm used it in that hateful, cruel tone. He was calling his fellow dems this name, thus, making the comparison to those with special needs. So in what tone do you use this word?
If Rahm was right in this, he NEVER would have apologized at all.

Actually, the Special Olympics head seemed kinda arbitrary. Reminds me of the South Park where Randy says the n-word on Wheel of Fortune and has to “apologize” to Jessie Jackson. When Stan tells Token about it, Token replies, “What? Do you think Jessie Jackson is king of the black people?”

I guess it depends on your definition of adult.
And yes people can call others developmentally disabled, and it would be just the same as calling them retarded. That’s exactly my point actually. That when you call someone retarded, you’re intending to compare them to people born with a mental disability.

Are you serious? That’s exactly what America is. We’ve been playing that game for years. I’m not saying I agree with it, but if this is the first time you’ve had a problem with it, than you’re a hypocrite.
1. There is a difference between using a slur and saying something offensive. Or do you go around saying the n-word whenever you want to?
2. Public officials should be doing exactly that. They shouldn’t even be calling nutroots people nutsroots or stupid or ugly. He should be a bit more professional.
Esthier on February 3, 2010 at 6:37 PM
I guess. But ultimately, since words signify by convention, I would say the majority of the 7 words you can’t say on TV have lost most of their sheer offensiveness. Plus, when you use the f-bomb as an intensifier, it’s really not all that offensive (compared to telling someone: “Go f@#k yourself” to quote a favorite Vice President).
Although, I’m guessing your observation was more rhetorical than anything else. ;)

So the fact that Rahm made an , in my opinion, offensive remark against those with special needs, in comparing them, with his liberal colleagues, not to mention the profanity with that, then add Obama’s slight of tongue last year, when he referenced special needs people to describe his bowling…and you don’t see a trend here? Like minds?
On the job issue of firing, I think that’s a bit much, but I can totally see why Sarah, or anyone with a special needs child, or member of their family might take offense in this.

I agree with #2, but voters chose ‘the Chicago way’ for the White House.
Re #1, ultimately, I can’t disagree with you that retard can be used as a slur. However, it seems odd that retard, unlike most other slurs, is primarily hurled at those who are not in fact retarded.
Ultimately, I’m not for using slurs. However, since words signify by convention. My experience with the word “retard” is that it is not primarily used to demean the mentally handicapped but to insinuate that someone is really stupid. Ultimately, it seems to me that through such repetitious conventional usage, the word “retard” has lost to a large degree its status as a slur, in the minds of most people.
Thus, when groups like the Special Olympics or various individuals get up in arms about the use of retard, a word which is losing its status as a slur against a specific group of people, it feels like a mountain is being made out of a molehill (or at least a mountain is being made out of a largish pile of dirt).

The real issue is that Rahm is a strident, unapologetically derisive, unsympathetic person who has duly earned the antipathy and hearty disdain of many people. He has a history of bullying, strong-arming, sending dead fish, and foul-mouthed adversarial attacks. Rahm is a thoroughly despicable nasty customer.
Just as many people had little patience or understanding or sympathy for the snotty, uppity Martha Stewart (who looks angelic by comparison to Rahm), they are happy to see Emanuel meet his comeuppance and sweat it out and be denied an acceptance of his “apology.”
Thank goodness Cheney (another person people love to hate)just called someone a “f’ing a’hole.” People went crackers, it was embarrassing, but at least he didn’t offend and demean a defenseless portion of our society.

Rahm needs to resign. He missed, he failed. Like any Pub who uses the word ‘macaca’, Rahm should be held to the same Dem standard, b the tenets of his own Party. Since Pubs are ignorant, and don’t know what’s right r wrong without liberal ‘enlightenment’, should a Dem who knows better be held to higher account?

conservative pilgrim on February 3, 2010 at 7:00 PM
Apparently many Conservatives lack empathy for others – just like liberals. If it isn’t personal they can dismiss others being offended and call them too thin-skinned. For Palin and others who developmentally disabled family and friends this is personal.
Now personally the use of the n word doesn’t offend me because it doesn’t apply to me. However I acknowledge it as an unacceptable word because it does offend those in the black community. I respect their feeling that they are demeaned by its use. A pity that the same consideration can’t be extended to the disabled.
katiejane on February 3, 2010 at 7:01 PM
Agreed. Although, it is an offensive term (as is “idiot” or “moron” or “idiot”) insofar as the one who is called a retard, or moron, or idiot is likely to be offended. Of course with your note about tone of voice and context.
But ultimately (I think this is your point), is it a word which in and of itself offends? Nah, not really.

I’m not sure that’s necessarily true. If mentally handicapped people weren’t still called retarded, then they wouldn’t be taking offense at the word. They wouldn’t associate it with their own handicap, and neither would we.
The problem is that the reason the word is insulting is because it’s being used to compare someone to someone with a mental handicap. Retarded doesn’t just mean stupid. It goes a step beyond that.
Esthier on February 3, 2010 at 7:24 PM
On reflection, I think Palin probably is truly offended by the term retard given that she has a special needs child. However, it seems that Sarah made a bigger deal out of this than she should have for three reasons:
1) Rahm wasn’t referring to people who were actually mentally disabled.
2) I don’t think most people are deeply offended by the term “retard” (which Sarah ought to recognize) and therefore wouldn’t think this is an issue which merits someone losing their job.
3) It was a private conversation (if I remember correctly).
I don’t doubt Sarah’s conviction. But given the context surrounding this incident, I think she overreacted and it seemed like she was trying to score political points by calling for Rahm to resign.
darii on February 3, 2010 at 7:25 PM

He’s the cretinous chief of staff for a marxist president. Both are enemies to our freedoms. So, like you’re defending Rahm, I take it. You complaint isn’t what he said, that it might be wrong. YOUR complaint is the reaction to it, that people think it was vile. WE, and Palin, are the ‘bad’ ones in your eyes, aren’t we? Not Rahm.
