RNC narrows down 2012 convention to four cities
posted at 12:55 pm on February 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The next presidential campaign won’t begin for at least another year and the conventions for another 30 months, but the preparations for the spectacle has already begun at the Republican National Committee meetings in Hawaii. National Journal’s Hotline reports that the RNC has whittled down the potential hosts to four cities:
The RNC has narrowed its search for a ’12 convention location to 4 cities, several party sources tell Hotline OnCall.
In a vote at the Winter meetings in Honolulu late last week, the party narrowed its search to Salt Lake City, Tampa, Phoenix and Houston.
The RNC’s site selection committee, headed by MI committeewoman Holly Hughes, will visit each of the 4 cities later this year to go over logistics, examine hotel and conference capacity and the facility for the convention itself. An RNC spokesperson declined to comment for this story.
Last year, the RNC held its convention in St. Paul, which challenged Democrats on what is usually a state that breaks their way. Democrats did the same thing, hauling themselves out to Colorado to try to capture the interior West from the GOP. Democrats had a moderate amount of success in doing so, but it looks like the 2010 midterms may set them back decades in that effort, at least if current conditions remain.
These choices seem safer. Florida went to Obama in 2008, but that’s more of an anomaly. Republicans can expect Texas, Arizona, and Utah to stay red in 2012 even if unemployment abates and the economy is back at full steam. Houston and Phoenix are great cities — I lived in Phoenix for almost two years — but neither of them are especially comfortable in late August, with both having high temperatures and Houston having high humidity on top of it. Salt Lake City would be a better choice for climate, but with Utah being so Republican, it won’t do much to give any advantage to the GOP.
All other things being equal, such as accommodations and prices, I’d guess that Tampa may be the best choice of the four. We should know in a year or so.
Meanwhile, what has the DNC and its chair Tim Kaine done to secure a site for 2012? According to Reid Wilson … absolutely nothing. Kaine hasn’t even created a committee to discuss it yet. Wasn’t Kaine supposed to have more time on his hands after his one term as Governor expired?

Man, should have included Las Vegas. They need the business.

Houston’s weather sucks year round. I was at the ’96 convention in San Diego, weather was perfect as were the fireworks over the harbor.

Kaine has May Day parties and parades to plan and attend, no time for a stupid convention.

Phoenix in August is like coming to Chicago in January. You don’t do it.
WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Do it in Tampa and let Senator Marco Rubio make the keynote address.
HondaV65 on February 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM
Hah!!!!
In other words, the GOP can plan their 2012 convention pretty much anywhere in the country that they want.

San Francisco is the best choice. It was good enough for Barry Goldwater.

WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 1:01 PM
Isn’t August in hurricane season? Not suggesting we always avoid Florida, but I’d venture a tropical storm heading toward Florida should at least be considered in the selection.
cs89 on February 3, 2010 at 1:02 PM
Make it Las Vegas – please !!!!
jake-the-goose on February 3, 2010 at 1:03 PM
That would make Houston a bad choice, too.
UltimateBob on February 3, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Here’s how I break it down:
Phoenix – Really hot weather and Arizona should be reliably Republican. Not seeing the benefit here.
Salt Lake City – If Romney’s the nominee, he’ll get an even warmer welcome. But Utah is such a red state, I don’t see the point.
Houston – I’d love for it to be held in my hometown, especially if Palin’s the nominee. But Texas is a solid red state. And I can’t help but recall that last time it was held here, Bush 41 got his ass whooped by Clinton(and Perot). However if someone like Rubio’s the VP pick, the appeal to Hispanic voters could be huge.
Tampa – Florida will probably go GOP next time, but it’s still technically a swing state. And the weather will be better than Phoenix or Houston. Plus you get the same benefit of appealing to Hispanics just like with Houston.
So I’d go with Tampa if those are the finalists. SLC would be the absolute worst choice(and I hate the Utah Jazz!).

Hellston (aka Houston) in August is not a good idea unless you want to sweat your a$$ off.
txag92 on February 3, 2010 at 1:04 PM
Sounds like Tampa is going to get this. After all, it’s only their 3rd try at getting it. At least it’ll be a reasonable choice compared to:
1. Salt Lake City. Holding the RNC convention there would be akin to the DNC holding THEIR convention in Boston. Playing in front of the home crowd is NOT the way to go.
2. Phoenix: While it’d be fun to see protestors fry their brains out, it would be less fun to see a 75-year old delegate from South Dakota (who already winters in AZ) do the same.
3. Houston: Anybody remember 1992? The Bush family would like to forget.
I still say that if Las Vegas wasn’t going to be chosen, then Los Angeles should’ve. After all, you want Sarah Palin on as big a stage as possible. Tampa, Phoenix, even Houston, seem small by comparison.
BradSchwartze on February 3, 2010 at 1:04 PM

And we have heaters in Chicago. So book your January vacation to Chicago before all the hotels fill-up. :)
WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Please, God, not Houston again! The 1992 convention there was the pits. Hotter than hell and venues spread all over the place. I felt like I spent more time in my car than in the convention hall.
I’ve been to Phoenix in July and it’s really hot, but at least most of the venues are close to each other and within a cab ride. Good convention city.
SLC in August is nice, but boring. Not much to do after hours unless you drive to Park City.
Tampa would be my favorite.

I lean to Salt Lake City, just in the interest of recent trends toward Western influence. I can see the “GOP dominant” and “Romney tie” problems, though.
I also join the Vegas chorus line.
Wait, that didn’t come out right…

VEGAS!
conservative pilgrim on February 3, 2010 at 1:13 PM
There’s no proof that the convention site location have any effect on the voting behavior of a state in presidential elections. The GOP can pick SLC for the stunning natural visuals and incredibly cheap price of holding it there. Phoenix in the summer is a crazy suggestion. It’s hot hot hot. Tampa? Maybe, but it’s probably muggy as hell. Vegas I’m down for.

Ever hear of the admonition “You go where the sinners are?” Especially when the sinners are in need of a little help, even if it’s the enabling sort of help?
One of these days, either the Ds or the Rs are going to have their convention in Vegas. Ironically, it could help Vegas get beyond the “Lost Wages” reputation more than things like COMDEX and CES have.

Might I suggest a location for the Democratic National Convention: Prudhoe Bay.

Nothing makes a liberals skin crawl more than the thought of Texas or people from Texas.
After 4 year of dear leader…no one will recognize how hot a Texas summer can be because the thought of cleaning out the White House will make it seem like spring.
Barry’s already neutering NASA. And if the Marxist-in-Chief can make Cap and Trade stick…taking the final stand before election day in the energy capital of the world, and HQ to NASA would send a great shot across the bow.

I can’t imagine that Romney would want the convention in Salt Lake City. He tries to steer clear of the religious identity issues, not because he’s not committed to Mormonism, but because it really doesn’t help him get elected. The task is to get elected.
RBMN on February 3, 2010 at 1:25 PM
Damn boy… This ain’t about no homerism… I’m from Texas and I don’t want it in Houston… [Though Houston is a weak fourth choice in Texas versus San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.]
I guess all 4 finalists are good in terms of states which display the benefits of low taxes and regulation but I like the central transcontinental freight rail route of KC, St. Louis, Indy, Cincy, Pittsburgh… Its industrial…

Weather balloon to test the atmosphere. The RNC desperately wants a Romneyfest in Salt Lake City.
Fletch54 on February 3, 2010 at 1:31 PM
I would prefer Houston. Tampa sucks–its not as bad as Orlando, but what city is (save maybe Burlington or Northampton, for different reasons entirely). Phoenix? Meh. Salt Lake City would be okay–beautiful scenery, easy to get around. The only problem are the draconian alcohol laws. Thus, Houston. But I agree with some of the other posters–Raleigh should have won, and it shouldn’t have been close.
PimFortuynsGhost on February 3, 2010 at 1:31 PM
HOUSTON!
Remember the four Texas phrases that count here:
1. Conceal carry
2. Castle Doctrine
3. Death Penalty
4. Texas Rangers
That should be enough to keep all the anarchists and their Leftist buddies out of here!
newton on February 3, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Another big advantage of going to Tampa is, they’ll get a lot more Spanish-language media covering it if they go to Florida. It’s close enough to Miami that they’ll drive up and cover it.
RBMN on February 3, 2010 at 1:36 PM
You think think there is any chance that if it is Salt Lake, the MSM will hint:
“GOP caves to Glenn Beck-style religious fundamentalists who control the party base”
They were going to hold expansion events at the Fairgrounds, but the Flea Market refused to cede any space to the Convention, so Raleigh’s out.
eeyore on February 3, 2010 at 1:36 PM
I remember a sticker on a door at the Austin convention center. I am paraphrasing…No Booze goes out. No Guns come in. That seems pretty Texan to me.
WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 1:37 PM
When I was living in New Orleans, it was in contention for both conventions. The locals were far happier dealing with the GOP which was looking for a place to hold a party unlike the Dems who were demanding that only unionized hotels be used and a slew of special interest/ anti-business crap be part of the decision process.
BUT…. Here’s an idea. In these lean times wouldn’t it make more sense for the two parties to work together. Both parties build big stages, hang red, white, and blue streamers, and have speech after endless speech from teleprompters. Why not do it on the cheap and have both conventions at the same venue? In the same way that the Special Olympics follow the traditional Olympics using the same facilities, why couldn’t the Dems follow the GOP in the same city? My choice would be Vegas!
highhopes on February 3, 2010 at 1:37 PM
I’ve lived in Houston my entire life and even I don’t like being here in August. When I first got married 18 years ago, my in-laws visited us from North Carolina in August and asked how long it took to get used to the heat. I told them you never get used to the kind of heat where your eyeballs cramp up for a few seconds when going from indoors to outdoors.
slug on February 3, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Remember when John Edwards condemned the Republicans for having their convention in New York? What an idiot. In 2004, New York City invited *both* parties to have their convention in New York as a symbol of solidarity and vigilance for New York, to show New York is still the best city in the world despite 9/11. The Republicans enthusiastically agreed. The Democrats declined because the Republicans chose to go. The idea was to have both conventions in New York. It would have been fine and understood not to have them at the same time. That would be a logistical nightmare, but having both conventions was to showcase both parties in New York City.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t worked for any of Texas’ metro areas, including Houston.
If the RNC had any balls, which they don’t, they would be looking at Seattle, San Fransisco or Boston and invite Tea Partiers on the convention floor. That would drive the left nuts insane.

Awful choices. They sure know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Phoenix in August 110 degrees
Houston – stinking hot, humid and hurricane prone

You don’t think the filthy lying coward in the White House hasn’t been generous to the city/state already? One example: The billions going to that high-speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis, with the exception of the last few miles after crossing the Mississippi, name the state that benefits from that project.
