RNC narrows down 2012 convention to four cities

posted at 12:55 pm on February 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The next presidential campaign won’t begin for at least another year and the conventions for another 30 months, but the preparations for the spectacle has already begun at the Republican National Committee meetings in Hawaii.  National Journal’s Hotline reports that the RNC has whittled down the potential hosts to four cities:

The RNC has narrowed its search for a ’12 convention location to 4 cities, several party sources tell Hotline OnCall.

In a vote at the Winter meetings in Honolulu late last week, the party narrowed its search to Salt Lake City, Tampa, Phoenix and Houston.

The RNC’s site selection committee, headed by MI committeewoman Holly Hughes, will visit each of the 4 cities later this year to go over logistics, examine hotel and conference capacity and the facility for the convention itself. An RNC spokesperson declined to comment for this story.

Last year, the RNC held its convention in St. Paul, which challenged Democrats on what is usually a state that breaks their way.  Democrats did the same thing, hauling themselves out to Colorado to try to capture the interior West from the GOP.  Democrats had a moderate amount of success in doing so, but it looks like the 2010 midterms may set them back decades in that effort, at least if current conditions remain.

These choices seem safer.  Florida went to Obama in 2008, but that’s more of an anomaly.  Republicans can expect Texas, Arizona, and Utah to stay red in 2012 even if unemployment abates and the economy is back at full steam.  Houston and Phoenix are great cities — I lived in Phoenix for almost two years — but neither of them are especially comfortable in late August, with both having high temperatures and Houston having high humidity on top of it.  Salt Lake City would be a better choice for climate, but with Utah being so Republican, it won’t do much to give any advantage to the GOP.

All other things being equal, such as accommodations and prices, I’d guess that Tampa may be the best choice of the four.  We should know in a year or so.

Meanwhile, what has the DNC and its chair Tim Kaine done to secure a site for 2012?  According to Reid Wilson … absolutely nothing.  Kaine hasn’t even created a committee to discuss it yet.  Wasn’t Kaine supposed to have more time on his hands after his one term as Governor expired?

Isn’t August in hurricane season? Not suggesting we always avoid Florida, but I’d venture a tropical storm heading toward Florida should at least be considered in the selection.

cs89 on February 3, 2010 at 1:02 PM

Tampa hasn’t been hit with a major ‘cane in over a century. They either hit south FLA, or cruise past the west coast and hit the panhandle.

Of course, you can always argue the “due factor”.

JohnGalt23 on February 3, 2010 at 1:47 PM

What? Not Detroit?

kens on February 3, 2010 at 1:43 PM

What about Pontiac? They’ve got a perfectly good domed stadium without a purpose. For the GOP it would be an outstanding choice to show what decades of Dem control of a state brings about. For the Dems, it would be an outstanding way to employ all those unemployed auto workers who voted the bastard into office.

highhopes on February 3, 2010 at 1:48 PM

Woo-hoo, I’m a Texan but count me in for Las Vegas too. Any city where the Mayor calls POTUS a “slow-learner” has got my undying loyalty

As for convention suggestions for the Dems, Copenhagen would be the most logical choice.

leilani on February 3, 2010 at 1:51 PM

If that were true, they would have selected San Antonio. Way better choice than Houston.

lonestar1 on February 3, 2010 at 1:43 PM

I know TX is a Spanish-language media hub too, but I think in FL it’s a little more Republican-friendly.

RBMN on February 3, 2010 at 1:51 PM

Fools. They should hold it in Michigan! 1980 redux. Hold it Detroit!

Houston is arguably in a worse spot – right on the coast in the Gulf of Mexico. And it’s in the lowlands (which explains the humidity).

JeffWeimer on February 3, 2010 at 1:54 PM

Tampa is the best of the lot. Salt Lake City would be great except the media would spend 90% of its time trying to play wedge politics between religious cons, moderates, and mormons. The Houston traffic would be awful to negotiate especially sans subway. Phoenix is my second, but there are some practical concerns about the heat.

I’m not saying there’s a good chance Tampa will be directly in the path of a major storm during that particular week. Just hope the possibility of a storm brewing relatively nearby is going into the calculations.

Even a Cat 2 heading generally toward Daytona within a couple weeks of the date would introduce chaos. Not that this consideration is a solid veto of Florida as a choice.

H U M I D… for you Ace-of-Spades readers, humid enough that you’ll be pre-dipped

phreshone on February 3, 2010 at 1:56 PM

If the Dems had their convention here in Tampa, they would have to bow before Mayor Pam Iorio.

vcferlita on February 3, 2010 at 1:57 PM

I say Houston because it is the center of oil, gas and LNG business in the country. All of those things, Obama and Leftists love to hate.

(Not a windmill in sight, except for those decorative ones with the Lone Star or the flag…)

newton on February 3, 2010 at 1:58 PM

Personally, I think they should hold it in Vegas.

That should really bug Obama.

*DING* *DING* *DING* We have a WINNER!

Pilgrim on February 3, 2010 at 2:03 PM

Please not Salt Lake City! Thats all we need, for the GOP, is to have the convention in one of the most prolific nanny states in the union. The attempted graft alone would taint the whole affair. Utah is a beautiful state to live in, but its politics and politicians are very suspect.

Houston or Tampa would be OK. Phoenix is a war zone and the risk of high profile kidnappings for ransom would be to high.

Sammy316 on February 3, 2010 at 2:10 PM

Del Dolemonte on February 3, 2010 at 1:26 PM

H-Town is brutal in August. 100+ degrees and humid. We’ve got the AC on full blast everywhere though, so it’s not like Reliant Stadium(or Toyota Center if they’re expecting a low turnout) wouldn’t be comfortable for the delegates and speakers.

It’s when people are outdoors or navigating through hellish traffic that things would get ugly.

Doughboy on February 3, 2010 at 2:11 PM

So I’d go with Tampa if those are the finalists. SLC would be the absolute worst choice(and I hate the Utah Jazz!).

Doughboy on February 3, 2010 at 1:03 PM

So what’s wrong with SLC? It’s 25 minutes to the mountains, has lots of things to see and do. Trip south to the Grand Canyon, Zions etc. Some of the most beautiful red rock country and beautiful mountains….

Bambi on February 3, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Houston’s weather sucks year round. I was at the ‘96 convention in San Diego, weather was perfect as were the fireworks over the harbor.

OmahaConservative on February 3, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Begging your pardon…lived in Houston 332 years. Jul, Aug, and Sept suck badly…all other months are awesome. We had sunny and 70 degrees a few days last week. We have sun 90% of the time and we have a/c everywhere. Way better than being up north in the winter…

Ltlgeneral64 on February 3, 2010 at 2:13 PM

phreshone on February 3, 2010 at 1:14 PM

Yo Phresh – what do you think Minneapolis was? ;-)

Oh man – bring it to SLC or Vegas! SLC has the infrastructure (thanks to Romney) from the Olympics so that would be no problem. Yeah the Vegas backdrop could be bad optics but it still would be a lot of fun!

Sammy316 on February 3, 2010 at 2:10 PM

So since you obviously never lived here, let me help you out on that one. Phoenix has the same crime problems as any other large metro area.

We have the added presence of the coyotes that deal in trafficing of hispanics. Find a large city in the US that doesn’t have some form of this (or their own unique-ish problem). For the most part (everyone disagreeing with me will leave that out) people without connections to that business are unaffected by it. It does not mean I accept it and want it gone, it just means that I wouldn’t know them from my neighbors because I have no involvement in it.

Kelligan on February 3, 2010 at 2:23 PM

The RNC is nuts if they don’t make it Vegas. The symbolism would be awesome. Each moment of the convention would remind voters of how anti-business Obama is. All the talking heads, including those at MSNBC would be discussing how Obama dissed Vegas.

OT: This is the first time I’ve seen Megan Kelly’s new show (I’m home today b/c of the snow and sick child). I gotta say (and I’m not usually sexist in this way), she’s smoking hot!

LL

Lady Logician on February 3, 2010 at 2:25 PM

Vegas is going to win if the GOP was entirely composed of HA commenters. But we haven’t been winning with the GOP for a while, so it’d probably some craptastic city in a purple state like Indianapolis or…Tampa.

Bambi on February 3, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Grand Canyon is at least a 10 hour drive from SLC. Zions, Moan and Red Rock country is 4-5 hours away. And the Wasatch mountains are not that beautiful imho. Does not compare to the San Juans, Grand Tetons or even Uuinta.

And what the h#ll is there do in SLC? I lived there for many years, it has be one of the most boring metropolitan areas in the US.

Is there any evidence that holding a convention in a particular state actually swings votes in that state?

MarkTheGreat on February 3, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Wasilla, Alaska would be handy.

trs on February 3, 2010 at 2:37 PM

Never lived there, but from what I’ve read, Texas is everything the GOP should be talking about. How less government can work better. If the whole country was run like Texas, we would be some happy campers. It is hot and humid, but Global Warming is not the problem right now.

bagoh20 on February 3, 2010 at 2:38 PM

Timmeh? Actually do something? Surely you jest. He couldn’t get out of Virginia fast enough to become DNC Chairman and left us in the dust.

My vote is for Vegas.

1980. Detroit. Reagan took Michigan — home of the “Reagan Democrats.” Michigan loved Reagan. The last time a Republican presidential candidate won Michigan was George H. W. Bush in 1988 — riding Reagan’s coattails.

Not likely. The kidnappings in Phoenix are Mexican-on-Mexican crimes. Just another “benefit” of our compassionate, open-borders immigration policies.

Yes, it’s hotter than hades in August but at least it’s a dry heat ; )

Does anyone vote for president based on where DNC or RNC holds its convention? I mean is there someone in Tampa who in 2012 will think, you know I really like Obama, but the RNC hosted its party in my hometown so Palin gets my vote? Man I hope people aren’t that wishy washy.

Hmmm, not a bad idea.

Kind of like when some rock bands would hold concerts in the middle of nowhere…Phish in the Everglades, The Who on the Isle of Wight, Pink Floyd at Pompeii, Woodstock…

Maybe the RNC should emulate the NFL and hold it in Helsinki or some other foreign venue.

Dr. ZhivBlago on February 4, 2010 at 3:54 AM

I vote Tampa, for selfish reasons. I live just down the road a piece.

Besides, can you imagine, in a city w/ a Dem bow-worthy mayor (Pam Iorio), and next door to Charlie Crist’s hometown of St Pete….

“Keynote Speaker Marco Rubio!”

I may even change my party affiliation so I can vote in the Republican Primary. After all, I’m a pretty big fan of my Congressman, Vern Buchanan.
