Demand Question Time
posted at 9:30 am on February 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
A group of bloggers from the Left and the Right have launched a new effort to demand more substantive engagement in Washington. After last week’s meeting between Barack Obama and the House Republican Caucus wound up benefiting everyone, we have begun a petition drive to demand a regular Question Time to have the President available to engage in meaningful discourse with his opposition in Congress:
A politically diverse group of bloggers, commentators, techies and politicos on Wednesday will launch an online campaign, Demand Question Time, urging President Barack Obama and GOP congressional leaders to hold regular, televised conversations like the extraordinary exchange in Baltimore on Friday. Supporters include Grover Norquist, Joe Trippi, Mark McKinnon, Ed Morrissey, Ari Melber, Katrina vanden Heuvel and David Corn.
Original endorsers include Grover Norquist and Eli Pariser, Joe Trippi and Mark McKinnon, Markos Moulitsas and Ed Morrissey, and many more, including Ari Melber, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Ana Marie Cox and Nate Silver. The steering committee is made up of Micah Sifry, David Corn, Mike Moffo, Mindy Finn, Jon Henke and Glenn Reynolds. …
Demand Question Time invites visitors to sign a petition: “We live in a world that increasingly demands more dialogue than monologue. President Obama’s January 29th question-and-answer session with Republican leaders gave the public a remarkable window into the state of our union and governing process. It was riveting and educational. The exchanges were substantive, civil and candid. And in a rare break from our modern politics, sharp differences between elected leaders were on full public display without rancor or ridicule. …
“So we call on President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader John Boehner to hold these sessions regularly – and allow them to be broadcast and webcast live and without commercial interruption, sponsorship or intermediaries. We also urge the President and the Republican Senate caucus to follow suit. And we ask the President and the House and Senate caucuses of his own party to consider mounting similar direct question-and-answer sessions. We will ask future Presidents and Congresses to do the same. It is time to make Question Time a regular feature of our democracy.”
Last week’s event was an all-around win. Obama got a chance to look presidential and to get away from scripted responses. His presence there forced the media to cover the substantial policy proposals from the GOP caucus, coverage that had been all but nonexistent before now. It coincided with Rep. Paul Ryan’s attempt to reintroduce the Republican plan for health-care reform, a bill that the media ignored throughout 2009 while helping Democrats call the GOP the Party of No.
Obama promised to put ObamaCare negotiations on C-SPAN. Regular appearances such as this would go a long way toward providing the transparency he promised but failed to deliver in his first year.
If you agree, please sign the Demand Question Time petition here.
Update: The petition site is already overwhelmed; you may want to try a little later today, when they can get the site functioning.

I’m not convinced this would really work, but if you can get Obama to participate, hey, give it a try! Just keep in the back of your minds that just because he SAYS he’ll participate doesn’t mean he actually WILL.
I’d love to see him squirm.

Win/win. Either it happens which benefits everyone both now and in the future; or it doesn’t, and thatt’s an embarassing postition to try to defend when you’ve placed so much emphasis on transparency.
Even the MSM could get behind it since it makes for (relatively) compelling TV and they can still spin it any way they like afterwards.

On first blush, this is something I can learn to live without… and, after a few of them, I wonder whether it wouldn’t get out of control.
Can you imagine some of the Dem bombthrowers asking questions: “Ok, Prez Bush, exactly when did you stop beating your wife?”
Or, I can do without another Townhall thang – certainly considering that there will be no actual people attending; merely politicians/lawyers telling the peeps what they think they want to hear measured with what they can get away with.

What? Obowma needs more TV time?
We know he is incompetent already, he doesn’t need to prove it anymore than he already has. Obowma will continue his lying ways with or without the cameras on as with the C Span healthcare issue.
The benefit would certainly be to the republicans in helping to get out their message and their policies by bypassing the media which is a great idea.
dthorny on February 3, 2010 at 9:42 AM
Great idea.
But…Obama is a serial liar. He knows nothing else. Any questions directed at him will not be answered. The only benefit this will provide is exposing his character, which may be than we could have asked for.

Here’s a suggestion. A mandate that any President with an 8% or greater unemployment rate must work at his desk in the Oval Office five days a week. For every 1% that the unemployment rate is lowered below 8%, the President does not have to go to work a day of his or her choosing.

I don’t think that session went as well as everyone seems to think. Obama looked like he was crawling to the GOP for votes on his disasterous agenda because even his own party refuses to vote for it. Obama isn’t going to go centrist and the GOP has, so far, refused to give an inch in their principles. Washington in gridlock is probably the best thing for our country while Obama is president.
Q&A sessions like that are heroin for political junkies, other than that they are a waste of time. When one party is so radical that their own members refuse to support it’s agenda, we need to clean house, not have feel-good media soundbites and gum-flapping sessions to help the President look “Presidential”.

Oh, it sounds terribly “democratic,” in the larger sense of the word; however, those of us who’ve lived under parliamentary governments such as in Canada, where there is a daily “Question Period” in the House of Commons, realize its limitations. The main beneficiaries are the MSM, who always have a supply of sound bites.
Most important, I came to realize that the best debater is not necessarily going to be the best leader.
No, I think we enough bread and circuses already. Anybody who doesn’t know what Obama’s voice sounds like hasn’t been trying very hard.

Besides, let them carry their own water on the dialogue bit. Why do we need to help?
We don’t need to dialogue with them. We need to defeat them.

one problem I see is ObaMao and Clinton both answer questions in away to appease both sides. They restate the issue or problem so that both sides see him as agreeing with them.
Policy is what is important not what he says. Like right before meeting with bankers he stated that he was sick of fat cat bankers but that was to cover him from being seen as being in bed with bankers. He says what is popular but is a hard core communist. All this recent discord with China is cover or diversion. You cannot trust what he says. At least we can get our view heard and call him on his agenda.
Ed Laskie on February 3, 2010 at 9:56 AM
Really? What is the evidence for that claim?
The fact is that it benefited ONLY President Obama. The liberal MSM had selective quotes that made the president look good and the Republicans look like Washington insiders and obstructionists opposing any “compromise.”
Some Republicans, like Ed Morrissey, will NEVER learn. So Ed is now pushing bipartisanship and engagement with the president? Does he think that Democrats are that stupid? Has he learned anything from the eight years under Bush? If the Democrats agree to it, it will be on their terms and their buddies in the MSM will help them out.

I’ll have to think about this…
We’re not a Parliamentary system, so does the Legislature have the right to require this type of interaction from the Executive? (Isn’t that what the State of the Union was originally supposed to be for, before it was reduced to a fawning spectacle?) And as far as the media being able to demand/require more access to the Executive, I’d rather see them all quit/fail than give them any more power. Without a doubt, the weakness of our constitutional system has been the failure of the media to do it’s duty.
JiangxiDad on February 3, 2010 at 10:02 AM

katy the mean old lady on February 3, 2010 at 10:05 AM
I am not going to say that I’m outright opposed to this, but I have concerns. Demanding that the president make himself available to congress for questioning, or vice verca, raises separation of power issues. In a parliamentary system, the prime minister is a member of the same body that is questioning him. What is in the petition might not be a bad idea, but where does it lead with respect to the separation of powers? It’s something to think about.
Mark1971 on February 3, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Well, it can’t be like Question Time in the House of Parliament, in terms of tone, because the Brits are used to both aggressive questioning and audience heckling of the questioner that makes Joe Wilson’s “You Lie!” line look wimpish by comparison.
Do it that way, and you’ll lose all those moderate swing voters who were suckered in by Hope and Change in the first place, and who are fleeing from Obama and the Democrats both because they don’t like his policies and because they’re angry about the lack of bi-partisanship shown by Barack, Harry and Nancy, with the brunt of their wrath actually going towards the latter two. So Republicans can ask their questions and make their points politely, but they can’t be seen as ‘picking on’ poor President Obama, because the voters you’ll need come November don’t want aggressive confrontational politics.

He pays no attention (nor does any one in DC) to all of the public opinion polls, why would a few million signatures on a petition bother him?
The fraud has an agenda and he’s much too busy trying to ram that agenda up all of America’s a$$ before he runs out of votes in the Senate and the Blue Dogs in the House finally wake up long enough to realize he’s sacrificing them on the alter of Heath Care.
GoldenEagle4444 on February 3, 2010 at 10:14 AM

I don’t think zero is going to open himself to these kind of questions. During the townhall yesterday the questions were all cherry picked. All he did was blame Bush.
