Video: Avatar reviewed by noted film critic Joe Biden

posted at 8:04 pm on February 2, 2010 by Karl

Three days of guesting teaches a blogger the value of a palate cleanser, my friends. Indeed, let’s double down with two views of the movie that is about to break the domestic box office record set by Titanic (and to steal a joke, the director of Titanic must be pretty ticked).

First, we have insight from Joe Biden (God love him), who was bowled over by the movie, though its name escapes him. And in true Biden style, the Vice-President apparently did not see it in 3-D:

Next up, we have the latest from Red Letter Media, featuring the dude whose demolition of The Phantom Menace was called “The best movie review you’ll ever see” by no less than Allahpundit. Frankly, I almost walked out on Avatar, mostly because it has many of the same flaws as the Star Wars prequel. This dude is a bit kinder to Avatar, though I think his discussion of how it is “effective” is really a nice way of explaining how crassly manipulative it is. He is absolutely correct to note that Dances With Wolves and District 9 (nominated for an Oscar today) are both superior films. Content warning.

Part Two of that review is also worth your time. By the way, Part One does take a passing jab or two at the politics of Avatar, and in a more entertaining manner than James Cameron mustered with $280 million at his disposal.

Blowback

Such a hard hitting question by Andrea Mitchell to the Vice President. Wow. But I’m sure we all can remember her asking Dick Cheney similar soft ball questions.

The Star Wars/Avatar critic guy is hilarious.

OT: Mel Gibson interview in Chicago. I laughed my a$$ off.

Won’t watch Avatar but From Paris with Love looks like my kind of gun porn.

Refreshing!

juanito on February 2, 2010 at 8:13 PM

Actually, as my film student son pointed out, Avatar is basically copying the script of Pocahantas. The tree, the romance, different races, the betrayal, etc.

And for those who think it is anti-military, most seem to miss the point that the military in this movie are mercenaries, those who have left the service of their world.

And anyway, it’s just a movie . . . some people get too serious in my view.

Great review, though.

Red Letter Dude is my new hero.

Avatar was insipid. Gorgeous, but insipid. It remined me of at least ten other films, and was 90 minutes too long.

mesquito on February 2, 2010 at 8:15 PM

Stand Up Chuck STRIKES AGAIN………..Perfect.

RealMc on February 2, 2010 at 8:16 PM

I though Joe’s favorite movie would be “Being There”.

RobCon on February 2, 2010 at 8:16 PM

I don’t think that Cameron’s people liked my script for a remake of Idiocracy based on our Dear Leader and a nutty sports/commentator who goes from selling sportsdrink (from the original) to a manic political rant show to being a network anchor on major stories.

Could never happen, of course.

I think this Red Media Letter guy could be America’s greatest moderate/conservative movie reviewer of our time.

I can’t wait for his take down of Attack of the Clones.

Creepier!

Urban Infidel on February 2, 2010 at 8:35 PM

Will Avatar sequels go the Star Wars III route and have the innocent hero get really sullen and murderous, or the Brinet Spears route and go really trashy?

Anyway, $1.8 billion will buy a lot of unobtainium.

The biggest rival to 7-11 stores here in Joey’s Delaware is the regional chain of Wawa convenience stores, named after the town in Pennsylvania where it originated. Prior to moving here, the only Wawa of which I had heard was the town in Ontario, and that was only because the TV weather reporters in Marquette believed it was necessary to cite weather conditions from locations around Lake Superior.

ya2daup on February 2, 2010 at 9:29 PM

In keeping with the “What would happen if…” meme you all know and love from college dorm bull$h:t sessions! If you loved “Alien vs. Predator”, then you’ll flip for “Ewok vs. Navi”! Coming to a theater near you soon!

I haven’t seen Avatar yet, but what the reviewer said was totally predictable.
Amazing effects, but story? Not so much.

btw, his review of Phantom was the greatest review I’ve ever seen.
I’m pretty sure he nailed this too.

Used a discount to see that movie, still feel ripped off. I hope an actual GOOD movie winse best picture, but this IS Hollywood after all…

ya2daup on February 2, 2010 at 9:48 PM

Ewok versus Na’vi? That’s no contest. The little furballs beat bad guys with laser weapons and AT-ST chicken walkers. What did the Na’vi do? They barely scraped by with intervention on the behalf of “Mother Earth”.

Rightwingguy on February 3, 2010 at 12:05 AM

We conservatives are getting way too bent up about Avatar. It’s just a story folks. It’s a gorgeous film, and honestly, I didn’t think the politics was any worse than the other movies that come out of Hollywood these days. It’s not nearly as “message-y” as people are making it out to be.

Punxsutawney Joe later came out of the theater and saw his shadow.

If you’re going to continue to make remakes of original works, please expand your vocabulary.

unobtanium”? The name is “Illudium Phosdex

No, it’s not too long or difficult to pronounce, at least not for the characters in the original.
.
And, seriously, the plot of the 7-minute original is tighter yet much less obvious than your 8th-grade level rewrite attempt.
.
And since when is drinking colloidal silver considered a practice to be emulated? It’s a mark, all right, but not one of heroism, intelligence or nobility.

flameofjudah on February 3, 2010 at 11:39 AM

Red Letter Media is the true King of the World, and I can hardly wait for the “Attack of the Clones” review (“Attack of the Clones” being, by any constructivist perspective, by far the worst installment of the execrable new “Star Wars” movies).

Blacklake on February 3, 2010 at 11:51 AM

Incidentally, what’s there for Biden not to love? “Avatar” is anti-corporate, anti-capitalist, anti-military, anti-American, and even an embrasure of the “noble savage” myth. Plus, it’s characters are sufficiently 1-to-2-dimensional that he can understand them! It’s the perfect flick for the idiot wing of the Democrat party.
