Trouble for Democrats in Arkansas

posted at 12:10 pm on February 2, 2010 by Cassy Fiano

Looks like there’s trouble for yet another Democrat. Blanche Lincoln. A devastating PPP poll has been released, showing her losing in a landslide to Rep. John Boozman. What makes this all the worse for Sen. Lincoln is that Boozman hasn’t even officially announced his campaign.

If the election were held today, Sen. Blanche Lincoln would lose in a landslide, according to the latest polling from Public Policy.

The poll shows 33% of voters would pick the Arkansas Democrat, while 56% would vote for Republican Rep. John Boozman.

The 23-point edge for Boozman, who has yet to officially announce his campaign, underscores that Lincoln is one of the most vulnerable incumbents of the 2010 cycle. Among independents, Boozman fares even better, 66%-20%.

Also troubling for Lincoln is her 27% approval rating, and 62% disapproval rating among Arkansans. Even among self-identified Democrats, her approval rating is a lackluster 51%, and just 17% of independents approve.

The number one thing dragging down her numbers? According to Public Policy, it’s health care. A majority of voters are against it. They’re so against it, that Public Policy even found Boozman beating other Democrats, in case Lincoln were to step down. Arkansas looks to be a state that will not stay in the Democratic Party’s hands. Two Democrats already cut and run, but Lincoln hasn’t yet. After she sees these numbers, will she realize that it’s her turn to retire too? I’m sure she’s getting pressure from party leaders to do so, because they’ll think that some other Democrat will have a better chance of holding the seat.

These signs from across the country should be a cue to Obama to scale back a bit. Americans hate his policies, they hate what Democrats are doing in Congress. They voted for change and transparency, and got the same old bloated big government, the same Chicago corruption, and the same overspending. People aren’t happy. They aren’t much happier with Republicans, but most Americans don’t buy Obama’s repeated whining about how it’s Bush’s fault. They know exactly who created this mess, and it’s the Democrats. And now, the Democrats either need to make some changes, and fast, or pay the price.

Every one of these seats that appear to be going Republican in a walk makes it that much easier for the GOP to concentrate on more contested Dem seats, like Connecticut, Wisconsin, Washington, California, and so forth.

The way things look right now, the Republicans should be able to grab Delaware, North Dakota, Arkansas, Colorado, and Nevada without breaking a sweat while retaining all of their open seats such as in Kentucky, New Hampshire, and Missouri.

You know what scares me the most about stories like these? That, at some point, many Democrats will understand they have nothing left to lose.

There is nothing more dangerous than a cornered animal. Once it realizes it is in a fight for its life, no one can predict what it is willing to do. If they are not going to retain power regardless of their stance, what is stop them from pulling out all of the stops?

Against my own desires, I hope that enough Democrats are steadied by thoughts of self-preservation to avoid the “Thelma/Louise” option.

Reuters
Backdoor taxes to hit middle class

Mon Feb 1, 4:09 PM

By Terri Cullen

NEW YORK (Reuters.com) –The Obama administration’s plan to cut more than $1 trillion from the deficit over the next decade relies heavily on so-called backdoor tax increases that will result in a bigger tax bill for middle-class families.

In the 2010 budget tabled by President Barack Obama on Monday, the White House wants to let billions of dollars in tax breaks expire by the end of the year — effectively a tax hike by stealth.

While the administration is focusing its proposal on eliminating tax breaks for individuals who earn $250,000 a year or more, middle-class families will face a slew of these backdoor increases.

The targeted tax provisions were enacted under the Bush administration’s Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. Among other things, the law lowered individual tax rates, slashed taxes on capital gains and dividends, and steadily scaled back the estate tax to zero in 2010.

If the provisions are allowed to expire on December 31, the top-tier personal income tax rate will rise to 39.6 percent from 35 percent. But lower-income families will pay more as well: the 25 percent tax bracket will revert back to 28 percent; the 28 percent bracket will increase to 31 percent; and the 33 percent bracket will increase to 36 percent. The special 10 percent bracket is eliminated.

Investors will pay more on their earnings next year as well, with the tax on dividends jumping to 39.6 percent from 15 percent and the capital-gains tax increasing to 20 percent from 15 percent. The estate tax is eliminated this year, but it will return in 2011 — though there has been talk about reinstating the death tax sooner.

Millions of middle-class households already may be facing higher taxes in 2010 because Congress has failed to extend tax breaks that expired on January 1, most notably a “patch” that limited the impact of the alternative minimum tax. The AMT, initially designed to prevent the very rich from avoiding income taxes, was never indexed for inflation. Now the tax is affecting millions of middle-income households, but lawmakers have been reluctant to repeal it because it has become a key source of revenue.

Without annual legislation to renew the patch this year, the AMT could affect an estimated 25 million taxpayers with incomes as low as $33,750 (or $45,000 for joint filers). Even if the patch is extended to last year’s levels, the tax will hit American families that can hardly be considered wealthy — the AMT exemption for 2009 was $46,700 for singles and $70,950 for married couples filing jointly.

Middle-class families also will find fewer tax breaks available to them in 2010 if other popular tax provisions are allowed to expire. Among them:

* Taxpayers who itemize will lose the option to deduct state sales-tax payments instead of state and local income taxes;

* The $250 teacher tax credit for classroom supplies;

* The tax deduction for up to $4,000 of college tuition and expenses;

* Individuals who don’t itemize will no longer be able to increase their standard deduction by up to $1,000 for property taxes paid;

* The first $2,400 of unemployment benefits are taxable, in 2009 that amount was tax-free.

OmahaConservative on February 2, 2010 at 12:48 PM

the only thing I say as a problem with these numbers is that I don’t see the GOP learning the lesson either. they are not listening they are not trying to seat Brown and stop Kirk from voting. they are allowing the dems to ram thru unpopular bills before Feb 11 because they also secretly want those bills to pass. The $1.9 trillion increase in debt ceiling? the gOP voted 40 against it but allowed Kirk to be the 60th vote so that it passed. They could have made a fuss about it. yet strangely the GOP remained quite as a mouse.

It is all a game to those in DC when it is our and our childrens lives to us. they do not hear, they do not care and they deserve to have the lest amount of power as possible to protect the country.

we need to strip them of the power they have accumulated over the last 80 years

Pablo Snooze on February 2, 2010 at 12:46 PM

I disagree. I suggest you check three things:

1) Deficit spending before dems took Congress vs deficit spending afterward.

2) Who incentivised high risk loan policy at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae and FHA? Who questioned those policies? Who defended those policies. (Hint 2003)

3) Who was pushing Medicaid reform before this happened? Who was against it? (Hint: It was in the 2004 budget proposal.)

Didn’t vote for the guy and never, ever expected him to deliver on his campaign rhetoric …

… and got the same old bloated big government, the same Chicago corruption, and the same overspending.

These signs from across the country should be a cue to Obama to scale back a bit. Americans hate his policies, they hate what Democrats are doing in Congress. They voted for change and transparency, and got the same old bloated big government, the same Chicago corruption, and the same overspending.

Not exactly the same. This is unprecedented and far worse than what even Democrats are historically capable of.

Sorry to disagree, but this is NOT the SAME old bloated big government. This is greatly more bloated big government!
This is not the same Chicago corruption! This is much worse Chicago corruption. This is not the same overspending. This is much greater overspending!
