Illinois primary election results thread
posted at 9:11 pm on February 2, 2010 by Cassy Fiano
It’s just about 9:00, and the polls in the Illinois primary election race have been closed for about an hour. The Chicago Sun-Times is tracking the results as they come in. So far, only 24% of precincts are reporting in, and here is what they’re showing so far on the GOP end:
US Senate, GOP Primary:
- Mark Kirk: 65%
- Patrick Hughes: 18%
- Don Lowery: 5%
- Kathleen Thomas: 5%
- Andy Martin: 4%
- John Arrington: 3%
Governor, GOP Primary:
- Andy McKenna: 28%
- Jim Ryan: 21%
- Kirk Dillard: 18%
- Adam Andrzejewski: 16%
- Dan Proft: 10%
- Bill Brady: 6%
- Bob Schillerstrom: 1%
County Board President, GOP Primary
- Roger Keats: 63%
- John Garrido: 37%
I hate to say it, but it sure looks unlikely that Andrzejewski is going to walk away with the GOP nomination. There are still only 24% of precincts reporting at the time of this posting, however, so there’s still some hope, I guess. Mark Kirk has a handy lead in the Senate race, which is to be expected.
On the Democratic side, Gov. Pat Quinn is leading Dan Hynes 53% – 47% and Alexi Giannoulias has a five point lead. This is also pretty much to be expected.
The Sun-Times will be updating with results all night. In the meantime, consider this an open election thread.

chicagotrauma on February 3, 2010 at 1:22 AM
You betcha! It’s a problem for him. To be honest with you, it really bothers me because Kinzinger should be able to hammer Halvorson over this, and I am sure he will, but now she can say “well your candidate for senate voted for it too” and do a lot to divide and conquer with that simple response. It helps thwart what should be a winning issue.
But Kirk isn’t all bad…I always thought he was going to need to bring in some outside help to fire up the base and position him better with conservatives. This would do a lot to address that issue, I think, and it is always better to have in state help pushing him along. Especially on the same ticket – that does a lot more than dozens of campaign stops where you’re mostly preaching to the choir already anyway. Should directly affect turnout where Kirk needed it most.

751049 votes in 11506 precincts. So on average 65 republican votes per precinct. 159 precincts left. Assuming there are the same number of voters as the average in these (It’s Cook County, could well be less), that’s 10,379 votes left. Per Sun Times, Brady has a 1,480 vote lead. So Dillard would have to pull a little over 14% more than Brady in Cook County to catch him. So far in Cook County, Dillard has been doing 13.2% better than Brady.
Obviously, if the number of Republican votes is lower, then the percentage Dillard needs grows a great deal. There aren’t even Republican candidates in many of these house districts, so I don’t know how many votes are even there.
Of course, it hardly matters because it’s gonna go to a recount and that’s where the magic really begins. Nobody close to the machine is going to want Brady to win, so he’ll probably end up getting screwed.
stldave on February 3, 2010 at 2:14 AM
Brady lost 47 votes with 28 more precincts reporting. 131 left, and a 1,433 vote lead.
stldave on February 3, 2010 at 2:22 AM
Approx. 750k votes so far. 1.1% of precincts out = 131/11215 = 8250 votes.
Brady = 154,005, Dillard = 152,572, difference = 1433.
Dillard would have to win a little more than 37% of remaining votes just to tie Brady if Brady continues winning 20%.
152572 + (8250 * 0.37) = 155597 <–Dillard
154005 + (8250 * 0.2) = 155655 <–Brady
Bill C on February 3, 2010 at 2:29 AM
Ergo, Even though Brady’s lead has shrunk it has not eroded enough to indicate Dillard will pull ahead.
Of course, all this won’t matter if the last votes are coming out of Crook county.

“Dillard has become the prime target because he’s the most centrist candidate in the field. Democratic strategists acknowledge they’ll be tracking his numbers closely Tuesday night.
“He’d be a tougher candidate in the general than any other.Part of the reason he’s got a shot is because the rest are conservatives to the right of him, and they could split it up,” said Democratic consultant Robert Creamer.”
I’d be happier w/ Kirk and Dillard winning and being competitive in the general than having two Conservatives win the primary and getting crushed in the general.

I guess you missed the last couple of years when those moderate republicians blocked bush’s judical nominations, voted for increasing spending across the board, got us into two wars yet would not let us fight them, sided with those liberal dems in 2006, 2007 and 2008 on all budgets, have not fought to keep the tax cuts of bush, voted to increase medicare by $400 billion for drug benefits.

nickj116 on February 3, 2010 at 2:58 AM
Yet, there are those that will. I’m just saying that Kirk probably wants Brady to win, though he can’t say it. He’s going to have to do some downstate outreach, though he’s golden in many of the suburbs. Having someone like Brady on the ticket is a good way to energize the downstate conservatives and get them in. If it is Kirk and Dillard, he has to get some outside help. He brings in a Palin (just one example) to rev them up and he scares the suburbanites. Brady goes a long way towards solving that for him without taking those kind of chances.
stldave on February 3, 2010 at 3:00 AM
I’d agree with that.
Good analysis.
nickj116 on February 3, 2010 at 3:03 AM
Their worse, moderate Republicans who spend like Democrats discourage conservatives from voting Republican. Then we end up with Obama as president.
40% self identify as conservative. At least 75% of Republicans are conservative so why do we have so much trouble getting conservatives through the primary process? Could the elite Republicans who make a S*** load of money off the gov’t be stacking the deck?
Bill C on February 3, 2010 at 3:03 AM
Truly unreal. So if we had 100 Liberal Dems in the Senate, they’d be better than if we had 100 Moderate Repubs in there? Really?
And again, if Moderate Repubs who win primaries in Liberal states keep Conservatives from voting Republican, then shame on those Conservatives.
I’m not saying we should support Moderate Repubs in places like Mississippi. But let’s make no illusions about the places in the country where we should absolutely be supporting them. Mass., Ill., Delaware, Connecticut, etc.

The time to argue about conservative or not is the primary.
THIS YEAR, WE STAND A SHOT AT WINNING BACK THE SENATE.
SO,
in the general election, here are your options.
A- Support the Republican.
B- Support the Democrat.
Not voting for B as a Dem supports option A by default.
NOT VOTING OR SUPPORTING THE REPUBLICAN IS SUBTRACTING YOUR VOTE FROM HIM/HER, AND ADDS VIA SUBTRACTION TO THE DEMOCRAT.
IF YOU ARE TRULY THAT ANGRY AT OBAMA
IF YOU TRULY, TRULY WANT TO “SAVE AMERICA” FROM OBAMA
YOU HAVE ONLY TWO OPTIONS.
TWO.
STOP ACTING LIKE THERES A MAGICAL THIRD WHEN THERE ISN’T.
Crap, or get off the pot.
I am voting for WHOEVER wins the GOP primary here in California, JUST TO SEE BOXER GONE.
I DONT CARE IF I GET A GOPER WHO ONLY VOTES PARTY LINE 60% OF THE TIME.
60% IS BETTER THAN 0.
IT ALWAYS IS.
We have purged many a bad apple, and regaining control with 5 or 6 moderates will not kill us so long as we stay focused on our principles and not let up the THREAT of the primary. So long as we hold that over their heads, when we need them, they will be there.

It is truly amazing how Republicans can be so stupid, so often. Less than a month after a fairly conservative Republican wins TED EFFING KENNEDY’S SEAT, Republican primary voters decide, hey let’s vote for the most liberal (R) we can find.
At some point you just have to throw your hands up and say f**k it, I give up. And move to Costa Rica or something.

I’d point out that Mass. is not Illinois. You aren’t going to get a conservative Republican elected either place. I don’t like Kirk. I have a bad feeling if elected he will be a slightly darker version of Obama. He seems slimey, opportunistic, and not at all what I support in a candidate.
That being said, we get enough Kirks and Browns and the GOP wins back the Senate and can actually effect outcomes by controlling the Senate agenda. So…. as long as Kirk has that “R” behind his name, it really doesn’t matter at this point. Worst case scenario, he’d vote just like the filthy lying coward in the White House would have had the majority of the American electorate not been so stupid.

Not exactly. Scozzafava had 5,000 absentee ballots cast to her prior to her dropping out of the race. Hoffmann lost by 3,000 votes. If she had dropped out a week before or never been supported by the republican party in the first place, those votes would be in Hoffmann’s hands as would the NY-23 district.

AMEN!! I really don’t want Dillard. I did not vote for Judy Baar Topinka in 06 — she was scarcely any different from the Democrat in policy, though presumably not in corruption — and I will not vote for a “Republican” who endorsed Obama! I am a lifelong (age 53) loyal Republican and I have voted for both conservative and relatively liberal Republicans in November elections. I voted for Jim Edgar twice, and I’ll vote for Mark Kirk, but you have to draw the line somewhere. I voted for Brady yesterday, and I dearly hope his lead holds.

I understand that Mark Kirk received a poor rating from second amendment rights groups.
I also understand that Mark Kirk voted against parental consent laws.
I understand that Mark Kirk voted against making it a crime to take a minor across state lines to have an abortion.
I understand that Mark Kirk voted against making the death or injury of an unborn-child that occured because of a crime against their mother a separate crime-actually he voted against making it a crime at all.
I understand that Mark Kirk voted against the ban on partial birth abortion-a procedure that is so evil people would be up in arms if it was done to a puppy, kitten ,or gerbil. By voting against the ban-he was saying “I support infanticide.”
Mark Kirk’s votes are dripping with the blood of innocents.

Brady’s lead just increased about 200 votes to 759 in the last few minutes.
If Mark Kirk says he will be a reliable vote for quality SCOTUS judges appointed by our next Republican President, please reconsider your non-vote. Over turning Roe v. Wade is the first step in the battle. If that is ever overturned, then we can fight that battle on a state by state basis. For the record, I personally never want to see an anti-abortion law created at the federal level.

Illinois is not some red state like Texas for crying out loud. We are about as blue as you can get and we have to be happy with what we get. Did you guys even look at the number of Republican’s that cast their votes yesterday? They are huge.
So sit on your butt’s and stay home in November, hand that Senate seat back to the Dem’s, but don’t come crying in November when it becomes a reality because you need perfection in your candidates and decided to stay home.

Terrific because the difference between having Jim DeMint be committee chair and Dick Durbin is miniscule, right?
SouthernGent on February 3, 2010 at 11:11 AM
That is one of the key points. Kirk will NOT be a leader in the senate, he will be a follower. I expect to see DeMint, Kyl and Coburn to be the leaders if the GOP takes the Senate, and that is what we want as conservatives.
Put a stake in the ground each general election and fight for conservative progress the next primary. Repeat ad nuseum.
WashJeff on February 3, 2010 at 11:20 AM
For those that think that Mark Kirk is not conservative enough, he’s more conservative than Giannoulias, and we need every Republican Senator we can get.
The way polls are looking now, Republicans should pick up seats in NV, AR, ND, PA, CO, and DE, which (barring any open-seat losses in MO, NH, FL, and OH) would bring the GOP to 47 Senators.
There are also competitive races for Democrat seats in IN (Bayh), WI (Feingold), and NY (Gillibrand) IF Republicans can field strong candidates. There’s no guarantee on this, but if Republicans won these three seats, and the Illinois race could determine who controls the Senate! If Giannoulias wins, the Senate would be 50-50, with Biden casting the deciding vote for Democrats; or if Kirk wins, the Republicans would have a 51-49 MAJORITY.
Even if Kirk only votes with certain commenters 60% of the time, he would probably vote for Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader, which would be a huge improvement over (up)Chuck Schumer! Even if Kirk did vote for Cap and Trade, if Republicans control the Senate, it won’t even be on the agenda, and even if Democrats have a narrow majority, the Republicans will have enough votes without Kirk to filibuster it.
But with Giannoulias winning a wipeout in Chicago, Kirk will need every conservative vote he can find elsewhere in the state to overcome the deficit in Cook County!

Kirk voted to continue PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION!
Do the kind lady and the kind gentleman need a description of what that ‘procedure’ entails?
I agree that the SCOTUS shouldn’t have made a ruling on abortion and that it should be decided by the states.
PBA isn’t about abortion-it’s about infanticide!
I made the the decision many years ago never to support a candidate that supported PBA.
My faith and conscience will not allow me to do otherwise now.

And here we go. You guys are part of the problem, a huge problem and not the solution with your closed minded ideas.
If refusing to vote for a candidate that supports infanticide makes me ‘close minded’-well then I wear that label with pride.

Help me understand how a non-vote is not a vote for the status quo?
A vote for Kirk is a vote for the potential conservative leadership in the Senate. Voting for Kirk could put McConnell, DeMint, Kyl and Coburn in charge. I suspect that these people are good on this issue. I hope over the next nine months you can view your vote this way, not for Kirk, but for conservative senatorial leadership.
Please understand that I do not make these comments with any anger. I just hope to convince to vote in Nov.

Did it partial birth abortion pass here in Illinois? How about Congress?

This, along with his Cap&Tax vote, speaks poorly about his judgement. On the other hand, the previous occupant of this Senate seat voted repeatedly (while in the state legislature) for 4th trimester abortions. This is ugly stuff. If Kirk were running against a rather conservative Democrat I would face a difficult decision in November. As it is, against Giounalli (name isn’t quite right) it’s an easy call IMHO. Each person has to decide where to draw the line and I can understand where you’ve drawn yours. Mine isn’t quite at the same place.

Kirk has a 100% rating from NARAL.
His PBA vote shows what’s in his heart.
I’m not voting for him, Knucklehead-please save your breath.

My husband-as libertarian/ conservative and pro-life as they come-may also end up voting for Kirk in November as well.
His line may also be in a slightly different place.
I disagree-but I respect.
