Climategate scientist hid more information?
posted at 7:47 am on February 2, 2010 by Cassy Fiano
Even before Climategate, a lot of people were skeptical about global warming. The most fanatical cultists like Al Gore and Laurie David insisted we conserve energy and drive fuel efficient cars, all while they fly around the country in private jets and live in mansions using more energy in a day than most of us do in a year. It was hard to take a movement seriously when the leaders of that movement didn’t even do what they said needed to be done in order to save the planet. It was common sense to most of us that the Earth gets cooler and then warmer in cycles. But, we had to endure years and years of global warming hysteria, which ultimately led to the “green” movement which is still persisting today, even as less and less people believe in global warming. Almost everything we’ve been told about global warming has turned out to be false. Oceans are actually cooling, not warming. The ice caps did get smaller… and then grew again. The largest contributor to global warming was cows farting, not soccer moms driving SUVs. Then Climategate happened. A global warming advocacy group, Real Climate, was hacked and hundreds upon hundreds of e-mails stolen. Those e-mails confirmed that scientists had been manipulating data to fit their global warming theory and ignoring the data that disproved it.
Well, Climategate just took another interesting turn. It turns out that it doesn’t stop just at some hacked e-mails. Professor Phil Jones, the former director of Climatic Research Unit, allegedly went further than just trying to hide the truth in some e-mails — and the UN might be involved, too.
Phil Jones, the beleaguered British climate scientist at the centre of the leaked emails controversy, is facing fresh claims that he sought to hide problems in key temperature data on which some of his work was based.
A Guardian investigation of thousands of emails and documents apparently hacked from the University of East Anglia’s climatic research unit has found evidence that a series of measurements from Chinese weather stations were seriously flawed and that documents relating to them could not be produced.
… Today the Guardian reveals how Jones withheld the information requested under freedom of information laws. Subsequently a senior colleague told him he feared that Jones’s collaborator, Wei-Chyung Wang of the University at Albany, had “screwed up”.
The revelations on the inadequacies of the 1990 paper do not undermine the case that humans are causing climate change, and other studies have produced similar findings. But they do call into question the probity of some climate change science.
The apparent attempts to cover up problems with temperature data from the Chinese weather stations provide the first link between the email scandal and the UN’s embattled climate science body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as a paper based on the measurements was used to bolster IPCC statements about rapid global warming in recent decades.
… The revelations come at a torrid time for climate science, with the IPPC suffering heavy criticism for its use of information that had not been rigorously checked – in particular a false claim that all Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035 – and UEA having been criticised last week by the deputy information commissioner for refusing valid requests for data under the Freedom of Information Act.
The Guardian has learned that of 105 freedom of information requests to the university concerning the climatic research unit (CRU), which Jones headed up to the end of December, only 10 had been released in full.
More and more information is coming out that makes global warming look like a hoax, a scare invented by a select group of scientists who engineered the data to make it fit what they wanted it to be. And even if none of this explicitly disproves global warming, it certainly casts a large shadow of doubt over it. If this is the kind of work that leading global warming scientists are doing, how can we trust it? How can we trust them? The answer is, of course, that we can’t. When there are accusations of scientific fraud floating around, then clearly there isn’t solid, reliable scientific work being done. If the science itself is shoddy, then it’s even harder to believe that the science they say is real is actually true. It’s looking more and more like they just wanted global warming to be real, and wanted it so badly that they lied and manipulated data and hid information.
Sadly, even if these scientists had the best of intentions the outcome could have been — and really, still could be — disastrous. Most global warming fanatics are out to use the cause for their own personal gains. Al Gore, for example, is poised and ready to make millions, some of which he’s already making with his film and his carbon credit company. The government is already using global warming as an excuse for even more intrusion into our lives, with cap and trade, for example. The global warming scam could have a horrible effect on us. The sad thing is that the science here is far from settled, and it’s looking more and more like a group of men basically made it all up.
Unfortunately, it could still have very real repercussions. The Guardian, for example, is doing its own investigation of Professor Jones and sees for themselves that the science is shaky at best. But they still just don’t want to let global warming go.

It’s a pity that you are using the term “green movement” to refer to man-made global warming maniacs.
The Green Movement is a term developed decades ago to refer to the effort to produce more food in the world and end famine. It emphasized increased use of fertilizer, improved crop varieties (including genetically engineered forms of wheat, corn and rice).
Dr. Norman Borlaug was the unofficial head of this movement that saved 10s of millions. An effort that won him a Nobel Peace prize.
Don’t just throw words around Ms. Fiano. Demonstrate some professionalism.

This does not appear to be the case. The documents (more than a thousand emails and thousands of other files) were from the East Anglia CRU, not the RealClimate site. It’s been characterized as a hack and theft, but it seems more likely to have been an inside job, with a whistle-blower uploading a file prepared in response to a FOIA request that was denied.

The problem is that all of the so called data sets are based on the same, flawed, raw data.

The politicians have built themselves a beautifull catch 22 to prevent that from ever happening, all the while pretending that they are covered by the law.
The law gives you 6 months to file a protest after your FOIA is turned down.
The problem is that you can’t file your protest until after the university finishes it’s internal review.
The gotcha is that it takes more than 6 months for the university to finish it’s internal review.

The result is that the official temperature record has been adjusted on unknown dates for unknown reasons, so that its probative value is little above that of guesswork. In such a case, the only appropriate action would be reversion to the raw data record, perhaps accompanied by a statement of any known issues,” said Terry Dunleavy, secretary of NZCSC.

With such pervasive professional mal-practice within this whole area of study, I cannot help but wonder if such fraud is unique to the Climate Sciences gang? I certainly hope that their lack of professional duty, and their nearly non-existent standard of care, is unique to them. But I see no reason why it should be. I have to wonder what ELSE is all going on behind-the-scenes in other sciences…? Take, for example, the scientific profession of “expert witness.”
We may have intercepted this AGW jalopy before driving it over the cliff; where and what is the next scientific fraud to appear?

Correction for the article:
Climategate was not a hack of the RealClimate website and/or servers. Technically we don’t even know that it was a hacker either.
Details:
Anyways, the information was allegedly hacked from the CRU (Climate Research Unit) of East Anglia University in the UK. It is “alleged” because some point to the FOIA header included in the release that shows the document was originally put together for a potential FOIA that was later denied. The theory goes that a whistle-blower, being familiar with the goings on knew about the file and decided to release it to the public. In truth there is equal amounts of hard evidence for the hacker and whistle-blower theories available to the public currently, which is to say there is none at all.
What the e-mails do/don’t prove:
Going further the information in the e-mails does NOT prove that they falsified or manipulated data (assuming a reasonable use of the word “manipulation” and not simply that they made adjustments which there are legitimate scientific reasons to do…even if their reasons were very likely not legitimate). The e-mails do however show a profound lack of professionalism, a concerted effort to prevent any dissenting opinion from gaining any amount of credibility regardless of whether it deserved any, and in general an atmosphere of advocacy and not science….but it didn’t actually prove any fraud.
The RealClimate link:
There is still, however, a connection to Real Climate in this story so you’re not entirely off base there. Real Climate is run by Gavin Shmidt whose e-mails can be found in those released e-mails and he was also the first well-known person to discover the file’s public release and was subsequently heavily involved in trying to put up the “nothing to see here folks” smokescreen in his Real Climate blog posts.

Look, even if there wasn’t massive fraud with the data, the data is totally unrealiable. Really, it’s a joke. You wouldn’t base a $20 bet on it.
The weather stations have been around over 100 years. They get moved. The equipment fails. Buildings and roads are built around them. The data gets lost. Older equipment gives unreliable readings. There are unavoidable mixups when the data is gathered and processes. There are computer errors that aren’t caused by fraud. Then there are honest misinterpretations. And on and on.
And that’s the GOOD data. When you get to ice cores and tree rings, they are useful for broad generalizations, but to tell us about termperatures within fractions of degrees? Give me a break.

MarkTheGreat on February 2, 2010 at 12:31 PM
Ice cores are pretty good, and tree rings can be used to find out what growing conditions were like in the immediate area of the tree. (The problem is of course that you can’t extract temperature from growing conditions. Trees have an optimum temperature, go above or below that point, and growth slows. Additionally there’s water, fertilizer, even the amount of clouds during the growing season makes a difference. And tree rings tell you absolutely nothing about what happened outside the growing season.)

I’m so glad to see so many people see this as a gigantic scam – but we can’t rest. We can’t let these people regroup and repackage this whole scam in another form. They want nothing less than wealth transfer. They must be stopped. So keep your tricorner hat and musket ready at all times. It’ll be Lexington and Concord all over again soon enough.

What the scientists seem to not realize is a very elementary concept. That they can’t “lay claim” to credibility.
Credibility is the perception of truth that OTHERS place in you. You can do positive things to enhance your credibility – and you can do negative things to destroy your credibility – but in the end … your credibility is tied up in the perceptions of others. You can’t pout, demand, whine, cry, or protest for more credibility. If people don’t believe you – there’s no supreme court to appeal to.
This is the problem that scientists have right now. If they want their credibility back – I suggest they get hot and earn it back. That means – OPENING THE DEBATE … which has been closed (by them) for years.

I just can’t quit youuuuu anthrogenic global warming. Now if it were cigarette companies manipulating public information and/or studies like the global warmists there would be a public official stampede to indict and jail them. Just shows that such public hangings depend on whose oxen are being Gore-d.

Will somebody smack the next person who tries to debunk the evidence of fraud by pretending it doesn’t exist?
THERE IS MORE IN THE FILE THAN E-MAIL.
Gad, how many times does that have to be pointed out?
I know, INFINITY+1!!!
