Video: Specter jumps onstage, interrupts Sestak

posted at 4:10 pm on February 1, 2010 by Karl

You stay classy, Senator. Arlen Specter was at it again during a candidate forum over the weekend. This time, the target was his primary rival, Rep. Joe Sestak, who were supposed to be doing separate Q&As:

TPM, which immediately went for the Kanye-esque “Imma Let You Finish…” headline, reports that Specter did not break any rules for the joint appearance. But this episode follows his recent condescending remarks to Rep. Michelle Bachman, for which he was forced to apologize. Arlen Specter is a man seriously in danger of having his report card marked, “Does not play well with others.”

Then again, you might be cranky too, if you were being outpolled and outraised by likely GOP nominee Pat Toomey. But the most recent polls — from Rasmussen and Franklin & Marshall — show Specter besting Sestak in the primary by roughly 20 points.

Is Specter just miffed that he has to go through the motions with Sestak, or are his internal polls telling a different story?

As I said on the first page, receiving a donation from a PAC is hardly the same as a personal endorsement. It’s good for the candidate, sure, but the blurb I saw only mentioned a donation.

Has SP come out and actually endorsed him?

Oh… Let’s think of how much Senatorial Deadwood has been or likely will be taken to the trash heap by the end of the year…

Joe Biden / Ted Kaufman
Arlen Specter
Chris Dodd
Ted Kennedy
Harry Reid
Barry Soetoro / Roland Burris
Ken Salazar / Michael Bennet
Byron Dorgan
Blanche Lincoln
Mel Martinez/ George LeMieux (Rino hunt going good)

Now if we could find a way to retire Chuck-U Schumer and Barbara Boxer….

After listening to a Rand Paul video (on foreign policy), I come away with the following impressions from what he said: Military-Industrial complex, blah, blah, Haliburton bad, blah, blah, “There is a question” that Intelligence was falsified to go into Iraq and I wouldn’t have voted to go into Iraq, blah, blah, oh, and did you know we were Husseins biggest supporters for twenty years, blah, blah,I would have voted to go into Afghanistan, though we waited too long and should have had a ‘Declaration of War’ and used Special Forces first, and the ever popular we created more terrorists than we killed for going into Iraq.

So after watching, admittedly just this one video, he sounds a lot like his old man, though he doesn’t come off as a crank like his dad.

I don’t want to convict the guy, “sins of the Father” and all that, but I have to wonder if the apple falls far from the tree and do we need another “family name” in Congress?

During the 2000 Presidential Debates, Al Gore was out there making that infamous run at GWB (who just nodded at him and went on killing him in the debate). It came out later that part of that was because Gore wanted to get the visual that showed he was taller than his challenger. Really.

I suspect this is the same tactic. Specter needs to prove that he’s a renegade (rules?, we don’ need no stinkin’ rules). Not so much for the benefit of Democrats but from the so-called moderate Pennsylvanian who is wary of entrusting office into an old, cancer-ridden politician who changes political affiliations for no other reason than he wouldn’t even be a contender for the GOP nomination.

Arlen is utterly undeserving of the sympathy usually given to seniors that is being displayed in this forum. He is an avaricious, self-serving scoundrel who merits ignominy and an unkind death. Old people with dementia do this – it’s called wandering or “sundowning”. Folic acid does a good job of minimizing these symptoms.

Sen. Specter – hint, hint, nudge, nudge – start taking your folic acid..

fred5678 on February 1, 2010 at 10:25 PM

I can’t stand Specter but I have to admit, this looked completely innocent to me. Little senile and sad maybe, but not Kanye-esque. He didn’t snatch the mic or anything.

For sure Specter did not lose it, because you have to have it, to lose it

Give credit to anyone willing to face the unpleasant reality of running against Specter.

I fear if Specter lost, he could become a stalker or at least wind up serving on a bi partisan commission to resolve the debt

Imagine being trapped in an elevator with Specter during a brownout. On stage, his opponent had a running chance of survival

entagor on February 2, 2010 at 3:44 AM

aw… I kida feel sorry for the guy. It wasn’t a Kanye moment. It was more like he wondered on stage to ask someone if they could help him get home. He came off like a lost old man.

Arlen, like way too many others in congress, need an intervention. I mean this in the nicest possible way, but you are too old sir. It time for you to leave.

Often when people get old and their mind starts to go a bit their first reaction is to get mean. I think this is what we are witnessing with Specter and it isn’t pretty. He just doesn’t have the energy to fight for his political life and that’s the situation he now finds himself in. His pride is keeping him around… and it’s also turning him into a crazy, bitter old man.

Ampersand on February 2, 2010 at 6:05 AM

Specter is a case of someone who hasn’t figured out that he’s really not up to the job. He obviously is losing his own political center. It’s sort of sad to watch.

ginaswo on February 2, 2010 at 8:15 AM

You may be right that he is a “goos guy,” but Joe “Rear Admiral” Sestak is a hard left nutcase. Yes for Cap n’ Trade, Yes for Maobamacare, co-sponsor of card check, 100% rating from NARAL, F rating from the NRA. He holds the dubious distinction of being canned from his post at the Office of the Chief of Navy Ops due to a “poor command climate.”

Sestak is not the replacement for Specter. Pat Toomey, a solid conservative, is the next Senator from PA.

james23 on February 2, 2010 at 9:42 AM

What do the people of Pennsylvania need to know to understand that Specter is unfit for public office? I am enbarrassed that people of this caliber can even get elected. If this guy is the voice of the people of Pennsylvania, there is no hope for them.

volsense on February 2, 2010 at 10:15 AM

This sounds like Arlen “the Darlin’” is suffering from early stages of senility or Alzheimer’s or both.

Herb on February 2, 2010 at 10:18 AM

Some Democrat chick on Hannity last week asked Sean if the GOP would take Arlen back. LOL! This was after the Bachmann “she looks like a lady” incident. The DNC has to be desirous of placing a for sale sign around his neck about now. LMAO! If he is still beating Sestak by the end of this week, …weird. Sestak is out there on his policies and ideology, but Arlen’s trolley has gone off the track.

Toomey versus S.P.E.C.T.E.R. will provide comic relief for years if he beats Sestak in the primary. Should Toomey be planning for heavy security, or hire some dudes carrying white coats with lots of buckles on them for Arlen?

volsense on February 2, 2010 at 10:15 AM

As nearly as I can tell, the people of PA are ready to abandon him. He is polling terribly.

And for a little historical context, PA conservatives will tell you that Specter got forced down their throats last time (2004) by Bush, Rove and the national GOP. Conservatives were lined up, then as now, behind Pat Toomey, but Bush endorsed Specter, and that endorsement, together with support for Specter from Rick Santorum, was enough for Specter to take a narrow win in the primary. Specter promptly rewarded Bush by running in the general on the “Kerry/Specter” ticket (I kid you not, Specter’s people put up those signs all over the Philly region) and, the day after both he and Bush won re-election, publicly warning Bush not to send any conservatives for approval by his Judiciary Committee.

To paraphrase you, what did the GOP bigshots need to know in 2004 to understand that Specter was unfit for public office?

Sen. Specter demonstrates that Dem will do anything to face time and votes to make them feel they are more important than they are.

Remember he is a switch hitter also. Was a (R) and switched to (D) because there were more votes there for him.

I also believe that his name says it all. He represents the specter of defeat. Demoncrates are fighting for their very life (because if a Demoncrate cannot hold a political office they might as well be dead, because the cannot do anything else).
