Obama dispatches missile defenses to the Persian Gulf

posted at 8:45 am on February 1, 2010 by Karl

Credit where credit is due?

The US is dispatching Patriot defensive missiles to four countries – Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait – and keeping two ships in the Gulf capable of shooting down Iranian missiles. Washington is also helping Saudi Arabia develop a force to protect its oil installations.

American officials said the move is aimed at deterring an attack by Iran and reassuring Gulf states fearful that Tehran might react to sanctions by striking at US allies in the region. Washington is also seeking to discourage Israel from a strike against Iran by demonstrating that the US is prepared to contain any threat.

The deployment comes after Obama’s attempts to emphasise diplomacy over confrontation in dealing with Iran – a contrast to the Bush administration’s approach – have failed to persuade Tehran to open its nuclear installations to international controls. The White House is now trying to engineer agreement for sanctions focused on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, believed to be in charge of the atomic programme.

Washington has not formally announced the deployment of the Patriots and other anti-missile systems, but by leaking it to American newspapers the administration is evidently seeking to alert Tehran to a hardening of its position. (Emphasis added.)

Apparently, not enough of the establishment media noticed that Gen. David H. Petraeus went public with most of this “news” back on Jan. 22. The timing is key, as the Senate passed an Iran sanctions bill Thursday night, with the aid of Joementum. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has responded with some sabre-rattling of his own, promising a harsh blow to the “global arrogance” next week, to mark the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Kudos to Julian Barnes of the L.A. Times for looking at the bigger picture:

Obama administration officials also hope to head off an expanded nuclear arms race in the region. If Tehran acquires a nuclear weapon, or is seen as making progress toward acquiring one, wealthy Arab Gulf governments could seek their own weapons, a scenario Washington views as potentially volatile.

That is an understatement, given that Iran’s nuclear ambition already has the Gulf states looking at developing similarly “peaceful” nuclear programs.

Allahpundit/McLaughlin-esque exit question: Do these moves signal that Pres. Obama is taking the Iranian threat seriously, or are they another sign that he is planning for the day that the “international community” failed to stop Iran from getting the bomb?

He’s taking it seriously. Petraeus has him convinced. The next best thing to a good offense is a token defense. Once a Patriot missile misses the weapon that nails Tel Aviv, then the call will go out to scrap missile defense as ineffective.

Liberal anti-logic.

This is just CYA stuff so he can talk tough when he runs for reelection. Bush had no way to stop them and Obama is continuing the policy. The only hope now is a street level revolution in Iran for peace and democracy. 4 Decades ago the CIA was really good at aiding this stuff. Now? Now the CIA is entirely staffed by Valerie Plames.

I just hope those knuckleheads are going to try and block access to the Gulf again. We spent way too much time and money on escorting tankers in and out of there in the late 1980s. That would skyrocket the price of oil overnight and benefit Dinnerjacket and his buddies greatly.

Hmmmmm….the primary target is missing.

Caper29 on February 1, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Bush 41 sent Patriots to Israel as a pacifier when it was clear the US would attack Iraq. The current moves should be put in the context of Obama’s unwillingness to be any more aggressive toward overseas enemies than he finds absolutely unavoidable. If Iran’s internal opposition succeeds in crippling or overthrowing that regime it will be scant thanks to this Administration, and I have plenty of doubts that Obama even wants such a result. He has just enough scotch tape to keep his pretend foreign policy from collapsing while his ramshackle domestic one buckles at the seams. To paraphrase one of Team Barry’s historical propaganda mentors, one good kick from any determined adversary would send the whole structure crashing down.

The second one. Liberals keep going back to the idiotic idea that the more nations that have nukes the less likely that anybody will use them. Fact of the matter is that Obama hasn’t even tried to deal with the issue. Getting Chicago the Olympics, winning the Nobel, ramming through socialized medicine, and ruining the economy were all higher priorities than Iran. George Mitchell has been ineffectual and Hillary Clinton is as clueless as Obama when it comes to international affairs.

The Israelis don’t trust Obamao, neither do the Saudis or anyone else in the region except his BFF’s the Islamofascists in Iran. After the bow and kowtow show Obamao has put on over the last year none of our allies trust him and our enemies know they can pimpslap him around like a two buck whore.

If you had been listening carefully you would have noticed that over the last 6-9 months the Israelis, Egyptians, Saudis and the rest of the Gulf states have had some rather unprecedented meetings about security in the region. Yes, that is right, the Israelis and their neighbors (with the exception of Iran’s ally Syria) have been discussing their mutual security.

They know that if push comes to shove the US under the Obamao regime will do nothing except go crying to the UN. The UN will do nothing because Russia and/or China will veto any UN action except for a tersely worded memo and some laughable “sanctions” in the security council which will give Obamao cover for not doing anything about the situation.

All he is doing with this move is hoping that the Iranians kill our servicemen and women and sink a couple of our ships.

This war with Iran has been coming for 30 years… they have funded the terrorists, trained the terrorists, and armed anyone willing to fight against the West since 79.

During the Cold War, we even used Sadam Hussein to slow them down….

The have been killing Americans since Lebanon in 83… we just have not been willing to admit it.

But they now see an econonicly weakened America, already involved in the occupation of Two restive countries…

Iran sees it as time to go active… time to come out from behind the curtain… before we kick our current leadership out and get our Act back together…

This IS a historic opportunity for America’s enemies… our own Progresives and Greens have weakened our economy to the point where we are not self sufficient (without Deficit spending the GDP would be in negative numbers), and a spike in oil prices would be a further blow to the nation (because even though we have it, Greens won’t let us drill).

Romeo13 on February 1, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Where are the Dems, MSM, and other libs to screech about how sending those missiles will ‘provoke’ Iran? Where are they to claim action against Iran will be a big recruiting incentive for al Quaida? Where are they to say this is just another act of American imperialism?

How about the hard core lefties who might think Obowmao made a deal with Iran, to distract from problems here at home? If Reagan could have made a deal to humiliate Carter win the WH, why couldn’t O cut a deal, too? I mean, all presidents do it, don’t they?

Or is it only Republican presidents who do all those things the Left has been claiming for decades?

Iran needs to be contained until we can find a way to break the back of its government before they get nukes. Bush was right all along, that Iran is part of an Axis of Evil. Hopefully Obowmao realizes that, and remembers Iran has been a problem since 1979. Toss in nuclear capabilities, which will eventually be in the hands of several other countries in the region, and we’ll be looking at a powder keg with a lit fuse.
