Rasmussen: Obama post-SOTU comeback, or dead cat bounce?

posted at 2:55 pm on January 31, 2010 by Karl

Sunday’s Rasmussen tracking poll has some good news, and some bad news:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 33% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -7 (see trends).

This is the first update based entirely upon interviews conducted since the State-of-the-Union Address and it reflects a bounce for the President. The number who Strongly Approve is the highest in more than four months (since September) and the overall Approval Index rating is the best in more than three months (since October).

The bounce comes almost entirely from those in the president’s party. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats now Strongly Approve, up from 50% before the speech. However, the speech appears to have had the opposite impact on unaffiliated voters. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 50% now Strongly Disapprove. That’s up from 42% before the speech. The next few days should give an indication as to whether these changes will fade or if they signify the beginning of a new phase in the political environment.

Pres. Obama also got a temporary bump after his September speech on healthcare reform before a joint session of Congress, but it was no game-changer.

If the next week’s polls continue to show that Obama helped himself with Democrats, but hurt himself with unaffiliated voters, it will be cause for worry at the White House. A recent GQR poll conducted for Democracy Corps and the Center for American Progress showed that Democrats have lost 6% in the generic ballot since 2008 due to people switching from Democrats to Republicans, and only 3% from projected lower Democratic turnout. Indeed, two recent Democracy Corps polls suggest that people who voted in 2008, but who are unlikely to vote in 2010, are much more positive about the direction of the country than people who are likely to vote in 2010. Lefty blogger Chris Bowers theorizes that there may be nothing that Democrats can do to bring these “drop-off” voters to the polls in November. “Exciting the base” Democrats may be pushing on a string.

In sum, the immediate post-SOTU polling may show only a temporary bump in approval for Pres. Obama — and he might be hoping it is temporary.

Just dead cat. Period.

Incompetent in Chief, stubborn at that. Good!

When Obama assumed office, he was still something of an enigma. Many asked: Who is this guy?

Well, now we know a lot more. The bottom line: He isn’t a good politician. Politics is an art, and Obama’s basic competence is highly suspect. He lacks the personal radar an effective politician must have — the instinct to know when you’re on solid ground and when you’re tilting at windmills. Obama has spent a year tilting at windmills.

The “art of the possible” isn’t static. With steady accomplishments, an effective leader can expand the zone of the possible. A winner draws new adherents, builds coalitions, acquires new strength for the next challenge.

For a weak leader, the opposite applies: His credibility shrinks, and so do the ranks of his followers. His ability to accomplish anything becomes doubtful.

This is the vicious circle that now ensnares Obama. He has succeeded mainly in uniting his opposition and dividing his own camp. House and Senate Democrats are openly sniping at one another. The hard left — Obama’s base — is writing him off as inept.

The sense of disarray was only reinforced by his State of the Union speech.

The GOP still doesn’t fully understand what’s happening, or they just don’t believe their eyes. I can count on my fingers (like The Precedent has to) the number of times GOP members have brought up the basic Constitutional points about the national health insurance plan and explained how it as anti and un-American as a government policy can get. That should really be the core of every opposition to it, to hold the debate back on that level – at least mentioned just about every time the subject is brought up.

The GOP is going to win in spite of their general timidity. The dems have just shown that they are too crazy and inept for words. This administration and Congress have been the biggest jokes ever to appear in American history, or even on the world stage. Historic incompetence and insanity.

thats because many in the GOP actualy believe in the power of Government… they just want to use that power to tell you to do what THEY want…

The real battle brewing is only now starting to be defined, and its the Progresives (who believe in Gov Power) vs. the Small L Libertarians (who want the old limited Fed Gov back).

Problem is that many of the GOP Oligarchs are actualy Progresives themselves… as so perfectly illustrated by the McCain Feingold bill itself.

The best thing going for our beloved land is that she is fully awake now, feels completely had by the left, will not be fooled, twice, and is not as stupid as the arrogant/elitist left believes her to be.

This awareness is prevalent in 3 groups: independents most of all, righties, and sane Democrats.

Anyone know what the typical bounce is after a SOTU? I bet this is fairly typical.

CWforFreedom on January 31, 2010 at 3:23 PM

There will always be a core group of Obamabots who would follow their leader to their graves, much like Jim Jone’s San Fransisco based progressive followers who followed him to Guyana. This core group seems to comprise about 25-30% of the population and represent core Democrat partisans. That’s not a big number.

Core GOP followers have about a ten point lead, at this point in time. The Independents determines who wins elections, and the Independents seem to be driven by the Tea Party movement. This is the GOP’s chance to run hard on national fiscal conservatism and a strong military, and punt social conservatism to the state level since that only serves to fracture the party at the national level.

Incompetence is not a bug of this administration, it is a feature. That meager bounce will evaporate soon enough.

Unfortunately Barry’s advisors may interpret this bounce as evidence that “face time” with the American public works. That means more excruciating prime time lectures from Teh Won.

Here’s hoping that they can be smart, for once. I doubt it, since they have a penchant for arrogance (see buffoonish McConnel) and stupidity, as often displayed.

They should just stick to:

1. Security, including WoT
2. Economy and jobs
3. Deficit reduction
4. Freedom and independence, in all regards

All else is peanuts. Without #1 all other are dead. This will kill the Obama-thuggery, having failed us on security and the WoT, which thy deny exists.

It’s usually minimal at best. And I’d wager that most of these bounces come from supporters within the President’s own party(much like this poll). After all, the SOTU is nothing more than a forum for the President to brag about what he and his party have accomplished thus far and what they wanna do over the course of the next year. A pep rally in essence.

Doughboy on January 31, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Back in September, when The Precedent decided to set precedent, again, and asked (wink, wink) to address a joint session of Congress in order to fraudulently try and put an official government imprimatur on his ridiculously un-Constitutional and stupid health care meanderings, he gained 10 points on the passion index (from -13 to -3) from 2 days before to 5 days after. Then he lost all that, and more. His support had jumped 6 points and strong diapproval went down 4 points.

This time, he’s gained 9 points over the same time (though all in the last 2 days on the support side) and the strong disapproval went down 1 point.

It seems that did better last time (during the faux-SOTA speech) but that all evaporated within another week, or so. They do something stupid every single day, just to remind those with very short memories.

Obama’s Flesch-Kincaid grade level score of 8.8 for his first State of the Union Address was the fourth lowest score since FDR’s first Address in 1934.

Vindicated! I’ve been saying that his mathematical abilities come in around the level of a slow 8th grader. Clearly, rhetorical skills are his forte, so my estimate looks to be right on the money. “profit and earnings ratios”, baby.

neurosculptor on January 31, 2010 at 3:38 PM

It’s an outlier. In statistics, that makes it a throw away for trending (meaning its so far away from the norm that it can’t be relied upon as a valid data point in averaging or trend analysis….in problem solving, it says “FIX ME!”.)

The next 3-4 polls will show if this point has any value.

That’s right. Beck already has done as much as anyone to alert the public to progressivism, and I think much more of it is coming this year. He’s almost single-handedly changing the game… from Dems versus Repubs to progressivism versus liberty.

I imagine Sarah will take the political leadership, if only to be the kingmaker for the 2012 primaries, and I bet Rush will pretty much join his Reagan conservativism in support of it. (Needless to say, Rush would never support a third party candidate, but he would support Tea Party candidates running in GOP primaries.)

Already it’s a powerful movement. With a team like Palin-Beck-Rush, the GOP best cr*p or get off the pot.

petefrt on January 31, 2010 at 3:57 PM

The polling among moderate swing voters that show Obama’s personal popularity is higher than the popularity of his programs explains the bounce. The moderates still want to like him, and are holding out more hope than conservatives (who don’t hold out any hope) that Obama will be a better president in Years 2-4 than he was in year one. Because if he isn’t, they have to admit to themselves that they were scammed by the Democrats and big media and threw their vote away in 2008.

In in a stand-alone vacuum, Obama gets a bit of a bounce. The problem is, once Congress gets back to work and Harry and Nancy start doing their thing, all the abstracts in the SOTU speech suddenly give way to reality, and the reality remains the Obama’s either too scared to challenge Congress on their unpopular programs, or wants those programs passed and realizes that it’s now or never, because the Democrats are going to lose members in November (or, if he’s really delusional, he still thinks the Democrats are going to gain members in November if they pass this stuff, in which case odds are he’s not going to be chastised one bit by the 2010 results and will balk at any attempt at triangulation in 2011).

There is really only one direction for Obama-mao…He is heavily invested in the idea that he can say anything and Americans are dumb enough to take it at face value…Even as he talked about spending freezes his new budget shows a six percent increase in spending…A six percent annual rate will double the size of government in 12 years…He is truly on Pluto. He is the best liar we have seen but folks are noticing now…

If the next week’s polls continue to show that Obama helped himself with Democrats, but hurt himself with unaffiliated voters, it will be cause for worry at the White House.

If the democrats are not worried by now after NJ,VA,and MA.
went down the drain for them, then these polls are not going to make much difference.

Obama’s polling has been sinking all year.
It has resulted in some democrats backing off of Obama’s agenda but they have still been managed to be bought off(with our tax money no less).

The democrats along with the MSM have made a decision to deliberately ignore the will of the people and push their agenda no matter what.

The press is so invested in Obama after all the cheer leading and activism they engaged in during the election that they can’t turn back.

A few critical articles here and there does not get it.

The press have purposely ignored many stories that would hurt Obama and the democrats agenda from the Global warming fraud being exposed in Europe,to Acorn,Obama’s Czar’s,and the many lies and gaffes he commits on a day to day basis.

The democrats are all in on their agenda no matter what in hopes that the economy turns around in time for 2010.

The only real panic I see (besides a few democrats that will take a beating at home during the election) is when and if Obama’s approval ratings actually dip into the 30′s.

With most polling being biased for democrats,it has probably already been there.

But until the overall consensus shows Obama sinking that low,I just don’t see democrats on the Hill abandoning their messiah.

Obama should do his next SOTU address like “Snerdley” addresses his homeys on the Rush Limbaugh Show.
I’m sure this would bump up his score, big time.

Obama is well on his way to total failure with this type of inept leadership coming from the White House:

At a small business in Chesapeake, Maryland President Obama today said that the 5.7% jump in GDP last quarter “affirms” the progress in the economy.

“Today, we’ve stopped the flood of job losses. We’ve stabilized the financial system. And we can safely say that we’ve avoided that looming depression,” the president said of the GDP numbers, “we received a report that affirms our progress and the swift and aggressive actions that made it possible.”

Really????….Here is the Reality….

Watchdog: Bank Bailouts Created More Risk in System

Updated January 31, 2010
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The problems that led to the last financial crisis have not yet been addressed, and in some cases have grown worse, says Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for the trouble asset relief program, or TARP. The quarterly report to Congress was released Sunday.

The government’s bailout of financial institutions deemed “too big to fail” has created a risk that the United States could face a worse fiscal meltdown in the future, an independent watchdog assigned to review the program told Congress on Sunday.

…and this….

New Record Deficit Predicted

Obama’s $3.8T proposed budget predicts national deficit will crest at record-breaking $1.6T in current fiscal year

….combined with coming inflation,sinking dollar,higher unemployment,China and other Nations bailing on us…..

……Obama said “Hope was on the way”

……..the reality is he is bringing “failure our way”.

100% correct.

Anybody who has had conversations on a regular basis with die hard liberals knows all that matters is their ideology.

They ignore all reality and facts no matter how credible and irrefutable they are…”Oh that’s just right wing propaganda”…or “It’s time for the adults to handle this,we know better”.

Liberals believe they are on some righteous mission that only the super smart and enlightened such as themselves can undertake……
………..if we are lucky, they will take us with them on their journey through liberal land loaded with rainbows, unicorns, and butterfly farts.

Just look at how they are handling the Global warming fraud.
Obama still has the arrogance to claim “massive scientific evidence to support it” when all the evidence has been blown apart with lies and corruption.

…liberalism is basically Jonestown on steroids.
