Rasmussen: Obama post-SOTU comeback, or dead cat bounce?

posted at 2:55 pm on January 31, 2010 by Karl

Sunday’s Rasmussen tracking poll has some good news, and some bad news:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 33% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -7 (see trends).

This is the first update based entirely upon interviews conducted since the State-of-the-Union Address and it reflects a bounce for the President. The number who Strongly Approve is the highest in more than four months (since September) and the overall Approval Index rating is the best in more than three months (since October).

The bounce comes almost entirely from those in the president’s party. Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats now Strongly Approve, up from 50% before the speech. However, the speech appears to have had the opposite impact on unaffiliated voters. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 50% now Strongly Disapprove. That’s up from 42% before the speech. The next few days should give an indication as to whether these changes will fade or if they signify the beginning of a new phase in the political environment.

Pres. Obama also got a temporary bump after his September speech on healthcare reform before a joint session of Congress, but it was no game-changer.

If the next week’s polls continue to show that Obama helped himself with Democrats, but hurt himself with unaffiliated voters, it will be cause for worry at the White House. A recent GQR poll conducted for Democracy Corps and the Center for American Progress showed that Democrats have lost 6% in the generic ballot since 2008 due to people switching from Democrats to Republicans, and only 3% from projected lower Democratic turnout. Indeed, two recent Democracy Corps polls suggest that people who voted in 2008, but who are unlikely to vote in 2010, are much more positive about the direction of the country than people who are likely to vote in 2010. Lefty blogger Chris Bowers theorizes that there may be nothing that Democrats can do to bring these “drop-off” voters to the polls in November. “Exciting the base” Democrats may be pushing on a string.

In sum, the immediate post-SOTU polling may show only a temporary bump in approval for Pres. Obama — and he might be hoping it is temporary.

If you believe the hype:

Obama is a genius and Palin is a dunce:

Well, I’ll take the dunce cuz that genius just ain’t workin’ out for me.

Genius + Liar = Snake (gotta watch them like a hawk).
Honest + Common Sense + Decent Values + A bit more experience = The Amazing Palin

Palin is not ready to run yet; however, give her a bit more time and she will be very difficult to stop.

There for an hour or so Chris Mathews and other assorted leftists forgot Pinnochio was 1/2 black, his numbers will tank again as they remember!

Telling whopper lies about his successes, his plans, the Supreme Court, Republicans, and the ignorant voters got the Libs all tingly again. They’ll find out soon enough it was all just lies and he will decend back to EPIC FAILURE!

My guess is the bounce was due to the meeting with the GOP. He handled questions fluidly.

Dead cat (er, snake) bounce.

Yellowdog12 on January 31, 2010 at 8:43 PM

I vote dead cat bounce. Nothing is going to change with this clod until the economy really comes back and GDP numbers to the contrary businesses are shuttering around my neck of the woods on a daily basis. Since President Toonces is working to prevent economic growth (and succeeding in spades) this isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Great conservative discussion site…just click on my name.

Obama’s agenda is still crap to the majority.

I guess some people in this nation LOVE to be slaves to tyranny!

BobAnthony on January 31, 2010 at 9:31 PM

This is only a temporary bounce. After all, tomorrow is Monday and the start of a new week. The markets have declined for the last 2 weeks and as far as I can tell nothing to cheer about the economy coming back any time soon. Besides, just some more of his bs that only the true believers are lapping up.

Yes, Obama lies with great style…

How Progressive!!!!

Baxter Greene on January 31, 2010 at 10:44 PM

Bounce is totally temporary because soon he’ll be right back to wrecking the economy and breaking his promises. He’s like a cheating husband who says … “I’ll change honey” after every affair he’s caught in.

But the thing is – eventually the wife is hit by the cold waters of the river of denial.

HondaV65 on January 31, 2010 at 11:03 PM

Very explainable dead-cat bounce… Notice the strongly disapprove didn’t move…

phreshone on January 31, 2010 at 3:17 PM

Yes. Did notice that. You would think there’d be just a little dip. But no. And after a speech that’s such a traditional blow-your-horn showscase? I think we’re seeing a hard ceiling here.

curved space on January 31, 2010 at 11:05 PM

Obama’s base always gets motivated after a speech. But it’s short lived and it doesn’t do anything to anyone else.

MrX on January 31, 2010 at 11:45 PM

Does anyone miss George Bush yet? I didn’t think I’d ever miss Jimmy Carter, but I’d take him to the current White House occupant. Heck, I’d take the town’s resident bag lady, schizophrenic fits and all. She certainly couldn’t do any more harm.

hachiban on January 31, 2010 at 11:59 PM

Yes I miss Bush! I say that almost every single day now! I really really miss feeling like the government had things under control!

Obama is so discombobulated. I don’t know if he knows which way is up!

Hey I give Obama credit for going to the Republican side where he had to admit he bad mouths the Republicans for political gain. And had to admit they have offered ideas and bills but the Dems are too busy bankrupting the country to even look at them…

Yeah Obama lies pretty but America has his number now.

I think there are so few who will ever trust him again.

Obama put Mao, a murderous, atheist, dictator on the national Christmas Tree and he wonders why anyone would think he has communist tendencies.

Nope the bounce will not last.

My view: dead cat bounce. Another two weeks, and the Marxist-in-Chief’s statistics will resume his decline into the most hated President the United States of American ever elected.

The Main Stream Media will not report the Marxist-in-Chief’s abject failures to drive the US into anarchy so that the Marxist-in-Chief can rebuild the US into his own Marxist vision, but the internet blog-o-sphere certainly is broadcasting the Marxist-in-Chief’s plans world wide.

Frankly, unless the Marxist-in-Chief has the ability to destroy the financial basis of the US with his monumentally excessive debt sales, the Marxist-in-Chief hasn’t the proverbial snow ball’s chance in Hell of being re-elected for a second term.

While Jimmy Carter was, unfortunately for him, just a peanut farmer and lost his reelection on the basis of lack of effectiveness and personal gravitas, Obama as Marxist-in-Chief, will lose his reelection on the basis that he is visibly planning the destruction of the US economy in order to repeat the failures and massive loss of life of Lenin/Stalin in post-absolute monarchy Russia.

The Marxist-in-Chief should have waited until his second term to commit auto-da-fe on the US, when he had his civilian police force (can you say “SS”) in place to counter the US military who, I trust would invoke their obligation to prevent an attack on the Constitution.

I wonder where the Marxist-in-Chief was going to find enough aircraft, tanks, weapons, and time, to train his blackshirts? It took Hitler from what, 1923 to something like 1932, nine years, to corrupt the military and to institute the Brownshirts, and then the Blackshirts? The only way this could happen on the Marxist-in-Chief’s watch is for him to finagle the financial destruction early on his first term, exactly what he and his Senate and Representative cronies are trying to do concurrently.

Quaoar on February 1, 2010 at 1:10 AM

Bounce?? I think not, at least not around here. People have been strangely silent, I never heard one thing in public about TOTUS UNTIL this weekend. I overheard several conservations with a central theme, about what a mess we are all in and what an idiot we had elected. For the first time in a looong time, things are looking better and better. Nobama 2012!!! Hope has made a comeback!!

DanaSmiles on February 1, 2010 at 6:15 AM

Their take on the polls is not how do we reverse course and bend to the will of the people but how far and how fast can we go to subvert the will of the people before they storm the Capitol with pitchforks?

November 2010 and 2012 cannot arrive fast enough.

And that is exactly what Odamna and his minions are attempting. I think greater numbers of Americans are beginning to see this for what it is: an overthrow of the American way of life. If he keeps it up, the pitchforks will come and the tar is already heating up.

Like I said:

Obama should do his next SOTU address like “Snerdley” addresses his homeys on the Rush Limbaugh Show.
I’m sure this would bump up his score, big time.
