Obama’s religious supporters jumping ship?

posted at 9:20 pm on January 31, 2010 by Slublog

If they’re becoming disappointed in Obama, perhaps it’s not the president’s fault. Maybe they just chose…unwisely.

His State of the Union address last week was not corrective: more pedantic than inspirational. Health care, centrist clerics say, would have been better if framed strongly from the outset as an issue of social justice. The economy, they continue, is also a values crisis, a failure on the part of the banks and government to respect our collective inter-dependence. “Not my problem” is exactly the mindset that Matthew 25 warns against. “I am my brother’s keeper, my sister’s keeper,” Obama would say on the campaign trail.

I reached Jim Wallis, the progressive evangelical leader whose new book is called Rediscovering Values, as he was leaving for Davos. Wallis has been close to the president, advising him early on about whether to run and exchanging e-mails with him amid the Jeremiah Wright turmoil. “We need a leader,” Wallis told me, “to call not for incremental change but transformational politics. The president could do that. I think he still has it in him, but the American people don’t perceive it.”

Other faith leaders are more pointed. Obery Hendricks, author of The Politics of Jesus, used to dial in to regular conference calls between the administration and prominent clergy, but recently he’s stopped, citing frustration and fatigue. “Is he listening [to religious leaders]? Frankly, I don’t know. They have the influence of window dressing.” The White House, he adds, is “patronizing and condescending,” especially to black clergy. “Many of the ministers feel that way.”

Obama likes the “brother’s keeper” language so much that he used it last year to sell healthcare reform to the same religious leaders that are now starting to distance themselves. During the campaign, I alternated between amusement and horror at how impressed some Christians were with Obama’s use of that biblical phrase, considering its original use in scripture.

Obama’s call to social justice comes from Genesis 4:8-10. That passage describes how, in a fit of jealously, Cain murdered his brother Abel. Later, God asks Cain where his brother is, and Cain’s answer is a dismissive “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” Basically, Obama is using a flippant remark by the first murderer to sell his health care plan to religious leaders. Maybe Sarah Palin was on to something, huh?

It seems to me that religious leaders aren’t moving away from Obama because they’re disappointed with his actions as president, but because they are tired of being used by a man who is no longer interested in their input.

Every American does. Thus a monopoly of the American govt. in certain matters (a monopoly that can be extended anywhere, so long as the constitution is amended) is infinitely preferable to a corporate one.

Karl Marx on February 1, 2010 at 12:08 AM

That presumes a benevolent government in perpetuity.

If a corporation can be ‘corrupt’, then why not government, too?

Your argument has no validity; it’s just your belief based on nothing. Or maybe it’s just a wish.

What HAS validity is history itself. Socialism has ruined and/or prevented everything you hope to see. You have a ‘right’ to toilet paper but under your idea you’ll eventually be waiting in line for hours to get a roll. History has proven that happens under your precious Marxism.

If you have a truly working brain, you might want to consider changing your values. They’re fully unworkable.

The theory of Communism can be summed up in one sentence: ABOLISH ALL PRIVATE PROPERTY.” – Karl Marx (the real one).

Which, in essence, means the abolition of privacy.

Which, in effect, means the destruction of the individual.

Except as a theoretical pawn in the historical fantasies of well-meaning, collectivist despots.

Uber-Nanny knows best.

And has the barrel of a gun ready to back up its ideological dictates.

profitsbeard on February 1, 2010 at 12:18 AM

Why exactly, don’t I have the right to a living wage? You assume the fact that we all have natural rights, and we also have legal rights enshrined in the constitution…if we were to amend the constitution to give ourselves the right to a living wage, we would have such a right. There is no reason to believe otherwise. Societies make their own rules, set their own boundaries. We have every right to do the same here.

Karl Marx on February 1, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Before we change the Constitution, how about you argue why everyone has the right to a living wage.

MeatHeadinCA on February 1, 2010 at 12:18 AM

Rights derived from the barrel of a gun are not rights they’re extortion.

thomasaur on February 1, 2010 at 12:13 AM

The implication was that the constitution was amended via the prescribed means. Society imposes an entrance fee, even Locke said so. The nature of that fee is at the discretion of the legitimate authority of a given society. In our case, the US Government. So far, our entrance fee involves letting us drink, not enslaving anyone, an income tax, and various other constitutional rules. There is no reason we cannot add or take away whatever we wish, so long as its done through the prescribed method.

Karl Marx on February 1, 2010 at 12:19 AM

Tell us–what would be a ‘living wage’ in your eyes?

Oh, BTW–that toilet paper you’d be waiting in line for, for hours, would be limited by government. The government would tell you how much you can take home. Maybe a dictatorship can’t pass a law against bad weather, but it can regulate how often you can take a shit. Unless, of course, you can find the newspaper that’s softest and most absorbent.

Yeah, but, if the wage is $10 an hour, I can live better on $20 an hour. So why not that? I mean, according to Karl, the government is always benevolent, always looking our for me–the little guy.

So, how about $30 an hour? That would work fine! But since tax rates would cut into my comfort, I can keep the lifestyle to which I want to become accustomed at $40 an hour.

Now, maybe, I have my ‘living wage’. Although I got to tell you, at $50 an hour I can own that house across the street that I really like. I mean, it’s unfair someone else owns that house when I want it.

So on, and so on.

Socialists like the first part of that saying, but the rest doesn’t fit with their desires. So, the rest of us have to do as THEY want, a whining foot-stomping demand that they couch in altruism. Too bad for the socialists that the only ones buying their snake oil are fellow socialists.

These so called religious leaders are ignorant and dangerously misguided. The goal of Christ was to change peoples hearts and, in turn, they would change the world. God’s program is grassroots.

Many people in Christ’s time were hoping for a messiah who would take over as king and force people to fall in line. I’m sure today’s version of hope and changer’s must be experiencing the same disappointments. They wanted a king who would force their values on everyone else.

It seems to me that Israel has probably told Obama that his time is up on the “Hope and Change” bullsh!t and that they are going to have to make a move.

Obama may be sending all of this hardware over(how’s that “War Machine” looking for you liberal hypocrites now!!)to ensure that they will contain or be able to stop an Iranian assault.

Obama has shown nothing but weakness towards the mullahs so I am not sure they will be to impressed.

I don’t see Israel basing it’s security off of any promises Obama has made either so this could be a real mess real soon.

All that bowing and apologizing by MR.57 states has done about as much good as all those “save Darfur” and “Free tibet” bumper stickers and rallies liberals get so excited about.

…Our enemies don’t fear Obama one single bit.

……Dinner jacket would never make the aggressive moves he has been making if Dick Cheney were running the show.

I bet this ‘crisis’ with Iran is collusion between them and Obowmao, to make the prez look like a hero. He is basically a Muslim, after all.

You know–the same way Reagan made a ‘deal’ to get our hostages back in 1981 only after he was sworn in so Carter would look bad.

Good question. Yeah–I rather like the conspiracy theory that Obama’s a war-monger, trying to get us into a scrap with Iran just to improve his poll numbers at home.

No wonder the clergy is starting to bail on him. I think i’ll build on this notion.

Hey–anybody got any Kool Aid?

Just praying Rahm and Reid don’t play any “can’t swear him in right now because we are in a crisis and he isn’t up to speed, Kirk is” shenanigans.

Patriot missiles setting up to defend against Iran have to have some peacenik “Iran is a little country” heads exploding.

I pray your prayers get answered. I would rather have a conservative with military experience who is not soft on terrorism sworn in than a liberal whose term has expired and shouldn’t be voting on anything let alone a possible major military crisis.

Other presidents attended church not only as an expression of their faith but as an example to the nation. Like Jesus said, where your treasure is that’s where your heart is.

Sorry Algore but it’s not the other way around.

Unfortunately, many Christians are easily suckered in by Socialism. On the surface the two seem parallel.

Guess also many confuse how humans should lead their own lives and treat each other with having the government do it for them.

I dunno.

Matthew 25 was brought to us by Brian McLaren, father of the emerging church movement that sanitizes the Bible of its “scary,” “negative” and “judgmental” language to avoid giving offense. He is an evangelical Christian in label only who perpetuates the false image of Jesus as a benevolent social activist — the original messianic community organizer — ignoring that Jesus spoke of hell more than anyone else in the Bible. In fact, Jesus stopped performing altruistic miracles after providing sufficient evidence that He was the prophesied Savior.

Another pet cause of McLaren and the pseudo-evangelicals is global warming. To believe that man can destroy the planet defies and disregards the Bible’s promise that Jesus will return to rule His kingdom on earth.

The Newsweek writer describes “centrist Christians,” which is a ridiculous concept that suggests the Bible is a political document with a negotiable agenda. Jesus never even addressed the Roman empire that governed with nearly unprecedented corruption and immorality throughout His life. He certainly never commanded the government to cure social ills. The only leaders Jesus challenged were the Pharisees and Sadducees because — like McLaren and the so-called Christians behind Matthew 25 — they misrepresented His word and disobeyed His will.

Hey I’ve been watching old episodes of Get Smart and they referred to “Weaknews”. Get it? “Newsweek”… “Weaknews”. Haha.

atheling on February 1, 2010 at 1:41 AM

Bah, I really just wanted to say what i said above, but for some reason I cannot let it go.

That phrase was used: “And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?”

How exactly does this relate to giving people access to medical care? Or to giving anybody anything for that matter. The statement is meant as in, I am not a spy for you to tell you where my brother is. Of course, this was used in order to cover up the sin of murder.

Christianity is not socialism, nor does it preach that all people are worthy of being taken care of by the people of the church. The bible, and Christ very specifically instruct people to not associate with those who live their lives in sin. While you can go and preach to them, and show them their sins and the way back into God’s grace, we are not to support sin.

When the government takes on the role of supporting sinners, it causes a problem with the ability of the church to help those people who live lives of sin, because many times it is the sin that rewards them with mana from government. Out of wedlock babies for more government mana, being a drug addict gets you disability payments, lying about your ability to hold a job in order to drain the taxes from hard working Americans. This list can be much longer if I chose to do some research, these are just things I have seen specifically by living my life. People who have lived a very sinful life do not turn to God until they hit rock bottom and need a helping hand and see no other alternative than to seek the truth. The government prevents many people from finding that bottom, and prevents the outreach of churches from reaching these people.

In all situation, the government stepping into the social arena has caused significant damage to our culture and to religion in specifics. The government civilized Marriage and now we have no fault divorce. The government created Social Security, which has caused Americans to cut back on savings for their retirement, cut the number of children many have, because they will not need them in their old age. Broken families because the children know their parents are taken care of from their taxes, so why send grandma or mom a couple hundred bucks a month when she ruined your (fill in blank with some petty thing). Medicare and more importantly Medicaid and other government granted health care systems have caused the highest use of medical care to be used by the least productive citizens of the country with no reason not to abuse the system. Federal government in schools has caused the absolute worsening of our system, going from the single best in the world to a stones throw from worst for some school districts. Government run ghettos that turn out out of wedlock babies who have more out of wedlock babies before reaching the age of 15 in many cases, some as low as 8 and 9! Extremely high violence in the most subsidized parts of cities, which also turn out the worst school graduates along with the highest school dropout rates.

These cockroaches calling themselves priests or whatever they chose to be titled are not religious, there is no way they could be religious if their belief is that government > God in providing for the needy.

Excellent! One correction though, Jesus did address the Roman Government to the diciples of wicked religious leaders:

Matthew 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
Matthew 22:16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
Matthew 22:17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
Matthew 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Matthew 22:19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
Matthew 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
Matthew 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
