IPCC chief hid glacier information for months

posted at 9:55 am on January 30, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Two weeks ago, the Times of London rocked the global-warming movement by revealing that one of their pet claims — that the Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035 — was not only based on nothing but speculation, but also lifted incorrectly by the IPCC.  The UN body has a bigger problem today, as the Times now reports that the head of the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, knew about the error for months, and never bothered to mention it at the Copenhagen summit:

The chairman of the leading climate change watchdog was informed that claims about melting Himalayan glaciers were false before the Copenhagen summit, The Times has learnt.

Rajendra Pachauri was told that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment that the glaciers would disappear by 2035 was wrong, but he waited two months to correct it. He failed to act despite learning that the claim had been refuted by several leading glaciologists.

The IPCC’s report underpinned the proposals at Copenhagen for drastic cuts in global emissions.

Dr Pachauri, who played a leading role at the summit, corrected the error last week after coming under media pressure. He told The Times on January 22 that he had only known about the error for a few days. He said: “I became aware of this when it was reported in the media about ten days ago. Before that, it was really not made known. Nobody brought it to my attention. There were statements, but we never looked at this 2035 number.”

Asked whether he had deliberately kept silent about the error to avoid embarrassment at Copenhagen, he said: “That’s ridiculous. It never came to my attention before the Copenhagen summit. It wasn’t in the public sphere.”

However, a prominent science journalist said that he had asked Dr Pachauri about the 2035 error last November. Pallava Bagla, who writes for Science journal, said he had asked Dr Pachauri about the error. He said that Dr Pachauri had replied: “I don’t have anything to add on glaciers.”

Pachauri’s excuse?  The IPCC was “terribly occupied” with Copenhagen arrangements and couldn’t be bothered with issues like incorrect data in the reports they planned to present there.  They finally decided weeks after their convention to look at the questions that had arisen (in places like the Times) and then moved “very fast” to correct their reports.

I think Bagla could be forgiven if he sees Pachauri’s idea of “very fast” as, well, glacial.  Pachauri and the IPCC only moved “very fast” after the Times exposed them.  Had that not happened, that wildly incorrect speculation about Himalayan glaciers would have remained in the report.

Now that this scam has essentially been fully exposed, it’s time to demand that all of the laws and restrictions that were based on it be repealed or rescinded.

Just think, we’re free from the lie of “climate change”. We don’t need to hamstring our energy market, we can construct new nuclear power plants and oil refineries, lowering our energy costs and making us competitive in the world market. We can increase the standard of living for people everywhere, not just in the US.

Additionally, any politician who professes a belief in this hoax is unfit for office and should resign or be voted out at the earliest opportunity.

Would have recognizing the error in November and announcing it have:

– triggered the investigation search for other errors, thence
– the publication of the other errors now being found, thence
– the general discrediting of the IPCC AR4, thence
– triggering cancellation of the Copenhagen meeting, thence

… the saving of what is now a wasted million bucks to the taxpayers here in the US (and millions more to others but who I care less about because it’s their problem if they want to be screwed by their elite corruptocrats.)

It would be a crime if Pachauri didn’t see some jail time.

A few realities from this scam:

1> This scam was forced upon our children by way of the public education system for years. Both of my sons were forced to watch the Goracle movie while in class, without any form of debate or rebuttal. My sons were both told by their teachers that the science was real and therefore non-debatable. The educational system in America is absolutely part of the Progressive agenda to control the public by way of any means necessary. Lies and deceit are shoveled down our kids throats while in the class room.
2> The United Nations is also part of the Progressive movement, and is full of lies, deceit, and hatred for the America that allows for personal freedom and liberty for all humans. The UN can not be trusted by Americans, and should be forced to move off American soil.
3> The Democrat Party leads the Progressive movement around the globe. The Democrat Party is 100% controlled by people who share the same agenda as the United Nations. The Democrat Party, along with every Republican that has voted with the Progressive’s, need to be held accountable for their attack on our Freedom and Liberty.

The facts are in front of every American. Those who continue to side with the Progressive’s is the enemy of freedom and liberty for all humans. This is a war.

Special hydraulic fluid designed for colder temperatures was used in the turbines, but it’s not working, so neither are the turbines.

http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/climategate-noaa-and-nasa-complicit-in-data-manipulation/

Related information:

Recent revelations from the Climategate emails, originating from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, showed how all the data centers — most notably NOAA and NASA — conspired in the manipulation of global temperature records to suggest that temperatures in the 20th century rose faster than they actually did.

This has inspired climate researchers worldwide to take a hard look at the data proffered, by comparing it to the original data and to other data sources. An in-depth report, co-authored by myself and Anthony Watts for the Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI), compiles some of the initial alarming findings with case studies included from scientists around the world.

We don’t dispute the fact that there has been some cyclical warming in recent decades — most notably from 1979 to 1998 — but cooling took place from the 1940s to the late 1970s, again after 1998, and especially after 2001, all while CO2 rose. This fact alone questions the primary role in climate change attributed to CO2 by the IPCC, environmental groups, and others.

However, the global surface station data is seriously compromised.

Keemo on January 30, 2010 at 10:55 AM

Mark my words; Horse poop – I mean AlGore – will tell us “With the science so huge; and with thousands of accredited scientists working around the clock to save the world, it’s inevitable that a “few” of their calculations will be slightly in error. That’s actually to be expected, given the size, scope and emergency nature of their work. It can’t be helped. 99.9% are agreed; this is settled science and those minuscule minor mathematical errors have no bearing on the results. Now get out there and buy my those carbon credits!”

Kissmygrits on January 30, 2010 at 11:04 AM

This is all critically important because the “experts” were counting on the public “trusting” their judgment.

Everyone knows that the earth is warmer than the moon because of the greenhouse effect. If this is what the “experts” mean by, “the science is settled,” then they’re is wasting our time.

The issue is whether CO2 emissions will transform the recent gentle warming into a crisis. The past decade has given the lie to those who said that a catastrophic acceleration of warming was imminent.

Their basic mantra — “Trust us; we’re experts and you’re not” — is now laughable.

• The 2000-2009 decade will be the warmest on record, with its average global surface temperature about 0.54 °C (0.96 °F) above the 20th Century average. This will easily surpass the 1990s value of 0.36 °C (0.65 °F).

Gov’t organization. Gov’t funding. Some of that may evaporate if they’re not trying to solve the imminent manmade global warming crisis, non?

I am old enough to be your mother. But yes, in the mid-to-late 80s, one of my daughters had to do a research paper on global cooling. My question, though, has to do with the current growing skepticism. I’m wondering if any parents are seeing signs of acknowledgment of that skepticism from their kids’ teachers.

However, the global surface station data is seriously compromised.

Keemo on January 30, 2010 at 10:55 AM

Serious is too weak of an adjective for this. If I had turned in a long term project to my Science professors in school that was this badly compromised I would have failed the course. Further, they would have bluntly told me to find another major.

The entire global warming scam got legs because the media especially the American media was complacent with it. Even now the American media is mostly silent and we have to rely on foreign (British) media for factual information.

I doubt it. AGW is still part of many state science standards.

Hey wait a minute . Is this guy also in the employ of GEICO ?

Nope. My sons take hits on tests for not towing the line.

Obama to Gore:

Don’t worry about the law suits, Al. I’m putting NASA on the case. If they can land a man on the moon, they can probably prove AGW.

petefrt on January 30, 2010 at 11:35 AM

More hot air from the bursting AGW bubble..
