Video: Stewart rips Matthews on “forgot Obama was black” moment

posted at 8:48 am on January 29, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Jon Stewart calls Chris Matthews “a Scotch away from becoming Ron Burgundy,” and that’s not the best line in this clip from Mediaite, where Stewart and Wyatt Cenac tear into Chris Matthews and his “big thinking” on race after the State of the Union speech. In fact, Cenac delivers blow after blow, and Stewart wisely leaves it in his hands:

Stewart seems to have cornered the market on ridiculing the Left in the American comedy world, mainly by default. Of course, Matthews makes himself an easy target — so easy, in fact, that many people on the Left seemed reluctant to come to his defense yesterday. If they’re tiring of Matthews’ schtick, MS-NBC may be left with nothing but Jesse Ventura fans … all three of them.

Blowback

Matthews wants a job with the White House as soon as his MSNBC job dries up.

Matthews thinks making racist remarks about the President is somehow a compliment.

That is money.

Heh, heh. Cenac’s wearing an Auburn tie.

AubieJon on January 29, 2010 at 8:55 AM

There is no way to interpret what Matthews said other than that it was a racist remark.

What did he mean? “The speech was so good I can’t believe a black man gave it.”

Help me here. I can’t come up with any other explanation.

Sloan Morganstern on January 29, 2010 at 8:55 AM

“Matthews thinks making racist remarks about the President is somehow a compliment.

BadgerHawk on January 29, 2010 at 8:52 AM”

BadgerHawk, some blacks think it is a compliment; they think Matthews is trying to say the right thing. I heard a black guy on Hannity’s radio show give Matthews a pass on this. Why? Matthews is an Obama supporter; the guy thinks other whites who don’t support Obama are racist. So, now we have a working definition of racism. Racism is anything said or done by a GOP/Conservative white who has a different point of view from the plantation Democrats.

SilentWatcher on January 29, 2010 at 8:58 AM

Matthews is so ignorant that he thought he was giving the ultimate compliment. That is how a pea brain works.

OT but somewhat related: more polling on trustworthiness of Fox News and other news media from today’s NRO.

One interesting finding:

Democrats were more likely to say that they trusted CNN than Fox News (30 vs. 18 percent). But even among Democrats, twice as many people trusted Fox News as MSNBC (18 vs. 9 percent).

Just imagine if Chris Wallace or Beck or Limbaugh said exactly the same thing…The Left would be out with pitchforks and torches demanding they be fired immediately.

And lo…I’m liking Stewart more and more lately, although to be fair, for a left-leaning talking head he’s always called out the Blue when they screw up like this, so I gotta give him props.

JetBoy on January 29, 2010 at 9:01 AM

Sloan Morganstern on January 29, 2010 at 8:55 AM

There isn’t one. And the most ridiculous thing is that Matthews somehow thinks it was a nice thing to say about the President. He basically defended it by saying we all just didn’t get what a nice thing he said.

I don’t think he even understands that what he said was racist. It’s like he looks at minorities as somehow generally inferior, but since he has a good heart and wants them to do well it keeps from him being racist.

Matthews is just reinforcing the fact that liberalism is a mental disorder and he is in the latter stages.

volsense on January 29, 2010 at 9:05 AM

Of course, Matthews makes himself an easy target — so easy, in fact, that many people on the Left seemed reluctant to come to his defense yesterday.

As we all know without a doubt, had someone at Fox News made that remark, they’d be without a job this morning as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the usual suspects, would have come crawling out of their respective hell holes to create a maelstrom of biblical proportions.

Unfortunately, infighting seems to be in vogue these days as the increased ratings during the Jay Leno/Conan O’Brien verbal battle has encouraged many with low ratings to follow suit to get the numbers up. All it does is increase the impression that the Libs/Dems/Progs/LSM will say anything and do anything to achieve their agenda, which is vast these days.

Lemme give it a shot. Chris went to Holy Cross, that sad, inferior Catholic institution in middle Massachusetts. And, so, for his entire adult life, Chris has been trying to impress and surpass his Ivy League intellectual superiors, those that he adores but also despises. You see, it’s that self hate dynamic psychological thing.

Very simply, he’s a lucky dunce who realized early on that if he sucked up to enough rich, powerful people, he could have a talk show. Nothing else matters.

Jesse has got some parkinsonian stuff going on these days a la Muhammad Ali. Uncontrolled head movements and such–likely as a result of repeated head injuries. The radio guy mopped the floor with him, and I was so surprised that the Body didn’t spike the guy through the floor. Radio guy–not a fan, dunno about him watching MSNBC

SouthernGent on January 29, 2010 at 9:48 AM

so easy, in fact, that many people on the Left seemed reluctant to come to his defense yesterday.

What possible defense is there? Matthews himself unsuccessfully tried to turn the comment into his thoughts about what others were thinking, but it didn’t change the conclusions about the appropriateness of Matthews’ comments one wit.

Turn the the cheap coin one way, and Matthews is a racist. Turn it the other way and Matthews is making a baseless accusation about others.

Trusting Fox

Another poll confirms that Americans trust it more than other media outlets.

Fox News is Americans’ most trusted source of news: That’s what Public Policy Polling reported earlier this week. ABC’s director of polling disputed the poll’s findings largely because of its use of “robopolling.” But now a second poll using a different methodology — and human callers — has reached a similar conclusion.

Of course the Nation is getting a full blown view of liberals like decider here that constantly make baseless accusations, have to make up stories or just plain lie,and deceitfully portray the results of their inept policies because they are responsible for so much failure.

If decider knows so much about “real” journalism….maybe he could answer why his Messiah spent the State of the Union
spinning lies and deceit.
