Video: Stewart rips Matthews on “forgot Obama was black” moment

posted at 8:48 am on January 29, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Jon Stewart calls Chris Matthews “a Scotch away from becoming Ron Burgundy,” and that’s not the best line in this clip from Mediaite, where Stewart and Wyatt Cenac tear into Chris Matthews and his “big thinking” on race after the State of the Union speech. In fact, Cenac delivers blow after blow, and Stewart wisely leaves it in his hands:

Stewart seems to have cornered the market on ridiculing the Left in the American comedy world, mainly by default. Of course, Matthews makes himself an easy target — so easy, in fact, that many people on the Left seemed reluctant to come to his defense yesterday. If they’re tiring of Matthews’ schtick, MS-NBC may be left with nothing but Jesse Ventura fans … all three of them.

I’ve written two posts that haven’t’ gone through, so basically this is a test. Anyone else having trouble?

silvernana on January 29, 2010 at 12:31 PM

Matthews wants a job with the White House as soon as his MSNBC job dries up.

mobydutch on January 29, 2010 at 8:51 AM
He’d make an almost perfect drop-in replacement for Gibbs…

acat on January 29, 2010 at 12:35 PM

Not quite sure why my two posts didn’t come through, but it had to do with Obama’s percentage of blackness compared to white and muslim. Don’t know why that would be unacceptable in this conversation as it wasn’t derogatory but stated facts. Can someone enlighten me?

silvernana on January 29, 2010 at 12:37 PM

Bad week two weeks for commie libs!

daesleeper on January 29, 2010 at 12:52 PM

So, this means Matthews won’t be fired for this either?

Speakup on January 29, 2010 at 1:07 PM

I can see articulate(that’s Obama’s one talent) ?

jeanie on January 29, 2010 at 9:22 AM

No it isn’t.

mr.blacksheep on January 29, 2010 at 1:08 PM

Now when I think of Matthews I will be thinking of Ted Baxter. And that clip was funny as hell.

LMAO!!! That was pretty good.

Claypigeon on January 29, 2010 at 1:16 PM

Stewart should pay MSUSSRNBC to keep Chris around.

redwhiteblue on January 29, 2010 at 1:47 PM

President Obama said he was not offended, because Chris Matthews is a Democrat.

In other news, Trent Lott is still not majority leader.

fossten on January 29, 2010 at 3:18 PM

“You’re miked”? So it would be o.k. to make such a remark if you’re away from the microphone?

rbj on January 29, 2010 at 9:13 AM

No, but you would have to be stupid, insane, drunk, or stoned to say such a thing while knowing that it is going out live on air. Which was kind of Stewart’s point…

jic on January 29, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Glenn Beck had a great bit on his radio show yesterday about this as well. He essentially said: replace “president” with any other occupation, for example:

Obama (a surgeon) did such a good job on my surgery yesterday, for an hour I forgot he was black.

Obama (a scientist) presented such well documented research, for an hour I forgot he was black.

You get the idea. It was a great point presented very humorously.

sweetlipsbutterhoney on January 29, 2010 at 4:49 PM

All Matthews sees is black.

keebs on January 29, 2010 at 9:08 AM

It doesn’t help when you have your head stuck up the Precedent’s @$$!

cableguy615 on January 29, 2010 at 5:07 PM

Do you think Stewart’s nose is big? I never thought so before but now…

Oh my gosh it is so annoying to deal with all this race stuff all the time! I wish Obama really was post racial cuz this is tortuous!

Who the heck cares?????????

Hey if the Left keeps up the racial talk maybe we could try them for torture! It really should be against the law. In fact Obama should only be allowed to mention the Civil Rights era once a month or something like that cuz… In fact that really should be a high crime of misdemeanor… to bring the civil rights era up so much after all this time.

Ace of Spade’s site went down.

maverick muse on January 29, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Ace nails it.

maverick muse on January 29, 2010 at 5:24 PM

You know I’m not into this whole idea of tit-for-tat when we jump on a Democrat when they say something that’s mildly idiotic and can appear racist but this is something completely different. This is flat out blatant racism and this guy needs to be taken off the air. There is no reason whatsoever that this guy should be allowed to keep his job when he is clearly a racist.

Remember that guy on TV – Jimmy the Greek? He got in so much trouble and IIRC he didn’t say something is bad when he was talking about football players. His comments were racist but I think the context and the nature of the comments made by Chris Matthews are OUTRAGEOUS and he needs to step down or be ousted.

Mormon Doc on January 29, 2010 at 7:03 PM

What’s the big deal? Matthews was just agreeing with Biden. /s

….and Harry Reid, and Barbara Boxer, and Bill Clinton, and Robert Byrd , and [enter name of plethora of other OH-SO-NON-racist Democrats!]

cableguy615 on January 29, 2010 at 7:42 PM

Foe an hour, I forgot Chrissy is stupid.

bayview on January 29, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Now that I thought it over, I don’t blame Chrissy for making that mistake, Barry is so light-skinned and he has such a nice accent.

bayview on January 29, 2010 at 8:24 PM

I use Chris Matthews to make fun of the remark Harry Reid made last year towards. It was deleted. Did not know the mod on HA is so pc AND sensitive.

bayview on January 29, 2010 at 9:03 PM

Sometimes it is odd how certain race-related jokes get deleted, yet legitimately racist comments make without jest or sarcasm are left. I had a comment deleted (?) once where I joked about passing the ObamaCare bill via affirmative action.

It could just be a bug, though. Sometimes comments poof for no reason– perhaps there’s a high statistical chance that a random comment would be us poking fun at something racial that the left said.

RachDubya on January 29, 2010 at 11:08 PM

The response from the audience when they saw Chris Matthews make his stupid comment shows that they really didn’t know about it until John Stewart showed them. It’s scary that this really is the way a whole lot of Americans get their news…and that they can vote.

redwhiteblue on January 29, 2010 at 11:09 PM

Chris Matthews says the truth. For one hour Obama was white.
The rest of the time Obama is a Black mother Fu&%er that hates deep down in side.Get this dog off tv.
