Murray in trouble in WA?
posted at 12:55 pm on January 29, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Until today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) seemed safe from the backlash gathering against Democrats. No Republican has managed to win a statewide election for either Governor or Senator in more than a decade, and Washington is a safely liberal cog in the Left Coast machine. However, according to a new poll among registered voters, Murray trails Dino Rossi, who lost two close elections to Governor Christine Gregoire:
In what is becoming a familiar refrain for Dems, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) could be facing a tough re-election fight, according to a new poll released today by a GOP survey firm.
The poll, conducted by OR-based Moore Information (R), shows Murray trailing two-time GOV nominee Dino Rossi (R) in a hypothetical matchup. Rossi, Moore Information pollsters Bob Moore and Hans Kaiser note, is the state’s best-known GOPer, though he has not been mentioned as a potential candidate against Murray. Rossi has lost two close elections to Gov. Chris Gregiore (D); he notably declined to run in ’06 against Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) to challenge a second time Gregoire in ’08.
Moore Information surveyed 500 WA registered voters on Jan. 23 and 24, with a margin of error of +/- 4.4%.
There is no word on the partisan split in the sample. Interestingly, their poll shows a 35/35 split on a generic Congressional ballot among Washington voters, which is better news than Democrats hear nationwide. However, the voters do have a preference for Republicans in order to put a check on Barack Obama’s agenda rather than Democrats to advance it, 45%/39%. That shows a lack of enthusiasm for the Obama-Pelosi agenda in a state that should be more sympathetic to it.
Independent voters are once again the key to the election. They support Rossi, assuming he enters the race, by 17 points. Rossi also has better base enthusiasm, with even moderate Republicans supporting him in the high 80s. Democratic moderates are more likely to cross over — and perhaps less likely to vote at all.
Rossi only narrowly lost both of his statewide elections to Gregoire, including a 2004 election that prompted a turbulent and messy recount in which Rossi lost an Election Day lead. He already knows what it takes to challenge Democrats in Washington, and this year the winds would finally be at his back.

As a resident of WA, I would be very surprised if Dino ran. He’s already lost two gubernatorial races against Christine Gregoire (though he technically won the first one.) Think he’s done running for anything for a while. He just hasn’t made a strong enough case to Washington voters.

Given what happened in MA, anything’s possible, but they don’t call this the left coast for nothing. The Seattle area (most populous area in WA) is mind-numbingly liberal, almost as bad as San Francisco, and dominates state politics. The “independents” around here are mostly libs who prefer a different label.
I’d love to be pleasantly surprised, and I’ll do my part to help, but Dino Rossi isn’t an unknown around here — he unfortunately has “2-time loser” tatooed on his forehead.

Funny how this comes out today, when bin Laden actually did come out and embrace Global Warming Hoax.

I have complete confidence I have chosen the correct side, and I look forward to my side prevailing.

I’m a Washington resident and a lot of Washington State is conservative with the exception of Olympia and Seattle which most of the Democrat’s powers comes from there. Baird who is my representative gets re-elected based on his incumbency and the people in Olympia. In the past, Washington State’s been gerrymandered to the point where it pretty much helps the Democrats.

When I lived in WA state (Bothell-near Mill Creek), it was still very conservative.
But they were on the outs bcs all the liberals from CA & the like were moving in & out to the country.
When they got to the country, places like Monroe, Fall City, Carnation, Bothell, etc., they started making trouble bcs they didn’t like sipping their lattes next door to a dairy that had been there for decades before them.
So they made enough trouble in various ways & drove out many of the farmers & ranchers that had been there for so long before.
Property taxes continued to go sky high, along with all other sorts of expensive & intrusive taxes & pretty soon, the only people livng in the Puget Sound area were liberal elites.
They turned Puget Sound into a liberal hell-hole.
I lived there again during the early 90′s while going to college & had had it.
There was no way that I could have every made enough $$ to live there comfortably.
It was insane.
They were even picking on us poor folks for driving old cars-I kid you not- a guy in Issaquah got a ticket for having a different colored quarter panel on his vehicle. Fine was $150!
I left the communism of Puget Sound for WY & now ND & I haven’t regretted it since.
I love the Evergreen state. I really hope they can crawl out of the liber hell hole they are in.
Maybe dreams do come true.

Every seat held by dems is at risk. There was none safer than “the Kennedy seat” and with each passing day that fact becomes increasingly clear to them.
Yet Pelosi and company appear determined to keep the electorate as angry at them as possible.
My question is, how long will the rank and file dems allow their radical leadership to destroy their party? Self preservation has to kick in at some point.

WA population is about 6.5 million. About half of that is in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties (urban Seattle-Everett-Bellevue-Tacoma area). A massive rural turnout isn’t enough. There’s gotta be some keystone issue that will flip a decent percentage of so-called independents in the urban areas. Like “41″ for Scotty B. Bottom line is this – Murray is a complete dumbass who could easily walk into multiple gaffes in a tough campaign. Combine that with likely low Dem turnout in November and very high Republican and independent turnout and you have yourself a race.
I also think Dino Rossi would be great – he’s well-funded, has very high name recognition, has run two statewide campaigns and knows how to deal with Dem dirty tricks.
He’s also popular in WA, even among independents.
I saw more than a few houses with both Obama/Biden and Rossi signs last November. Take that as you will, but I think Dino could take down Murray.

But the fact is, Brown was an excellent candidate (well-spoken, good-looking, little dirt), with an excellent, campaign (focused, positive). Based on Rossi’s last two campaigns, I’m not sure he’s the one to beat Murray. The good news is, few in MA had heard of Brown two months before the election. So hope springs eternal in WA — maybe a Brown-like candidate will pop out of the woodwork.

You get east of the mountains & there is a far different picture painted there.

Those people are conservative, overall.
But just like all citified areas in our nations, they are overwhelmingly liberal.
Look at any major city & they will most likely vote blue.
I have already determined that those who live in cities often have a different mentality than those who live in the country.
Being self-reliant in the city is not a necessity.
Being self-reliant in the country is survival.
Being self-reliant gives you a broader perspective of what govt control really means.

One other thing about WA – a candidate who has a good proposal to bring an NBA team to Seattle could win over a lot of voters in Seatown.
The former Sonics had a lot of fans who blamed Chris Gregwahhh for losing the team, and this, while trite, is a good way to win votes in King County and throughout the state.

While Washington State voters on this thread seem skeptical about Rossi’s chances, it would definitely be worth a try, considering the national picture.
The way polls are looking right now, Reid (NV), Lincoln(AR), and Specter (PA) will probably lose, and Republicans should pick up open seats in ND and CO, which would bring the Democrats down to 54 Senators, if Republicans can hold open seats in MO, NH, OH, and FL.
Right now, Mike Castle has a good shot at taking Biden’s old seat in DE, while Obama’s old seat in IL is iffy. We’ve also seen polls showing that Bayh is vulnerable in IN, and Feingold in WI, if the right GOP candidates can be found. It wouldn’t be easy, but winning these races would result in a 50-50 Senate, if Patty Murray WINS re-election. Meaning that if she could be defeated, Washington State could give Republicans a MAJORITY in the Senate! It’s a tall order, but it’s possible!
Dear Senator Cornyn, you might want to call Dino Rossi…

I don’t mean to be a killjoy. I just wanted to point out that Scott Brown had some specific advantages in MA: He was a great candidate with a great campaign, he was well-spoken and good-looking, with a nice family, and he had a keystone issue (#41) with which to bludgeon his opponent.
I think it’s possible to beat Murray — she is not intelligent, not well-spoken, not good-looking, and has a long liberal track record with which she can be tarred and feathered. But to take advantage of all that, the Republicans need a great candidate. Perhaps Rossi, with a re-tooled message and campaign, can pull it off. Before the Republicans settle on him, however, it would be worth their while to scour the local political scene for a Scott Brown. You never know.
Splashman on January 29, 2010 at 1:43 PM
I think that people in Washington (and elsewhere) will be looking extra hard for the sort of fraud that took the election away from Rossi. Most of us are decent folk, unwilling to win only by cheating, and we assume everyone is the same. But they’re not, and people are figuring that out now. They’ll be watching.
It kind of reminds me of playing cards with my late FIL–once I realized he cheated against his kids and grandkids, I watched him very closely and realized he just wanted to win and would do anything to make sure he did. After a while, I just refused to play because playing with a cheater is no fun (I was accused of being a sore loser) and is a horrible example for kids. Unfortunately for the conservatives in WA (and elsewhere), the stakes are much higher than a couple of bucks in the pot.

“Osama Bin Laden has been very, very effective. Um…He…We got to ask, ‘Why is this man so popular around the world? Why are people so supportive of him in…in many countries?’
Well, he…uh…has been in many countries that are riddled with poverty. Uh…People don’t have homes, no sewers, no roads, no schools, no health care, no..uh… facilities just to make sure that their daily lives were ok. He’s been out in these countries for decades building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities and the people are extremely grateful. He’s made their life better. Uh… We have not done that. We haven’t been out in any of these countries helping them build their infrastructure.”
