Report: Obama tells DOJ to consider alternative venues for KSM trial
posted at 9:23 pm on January 28, 2010 by Allahpundit
Read the fine print. There’s no hint that KSM’s being sent back to a military tribunal, only that he may end up being tried in a civilian court not located in New York. Which isn’t entirely smart, by the way: As I said from the very beginning, if there’s any city with the security apparatus in place to deal with threats from jihadbots, it’s my hometown. But if even Bloomberg, who just started his third and last term as mayor and has no electoral incentive to oppose the trial, is now also against it, maybe I need to rethink my assumptions.
White House officials have told the Justice Department to consider other venues for the 9/11 terror trial that was to be held in lower Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.
The decision came after Mayor Bloomberg and other politicians across the state railed against President Obama’s plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Manhattan Federal Court.
Boehner all but guaranteed yesterday that the trial was off. Today none other than Dianne Feinstein piled on, which might have convinced The One that even leftist support for an NYC trial was too shaky ahead of the midterms. Quote: “There are other places to try it in the U.S. that are much more remote, much less a target, and much less a squatting ground for propaganda around the world.” Here’s a sample from Liz Cheney’s group of what the Dems will be looking at in October if they don’t follow through on this.
Update: Sounds like the KSM scoop is for real. Major Garrett’s hearing the same thing.

Once he gets Guantanamo closed he can have it there. They already have fences and everything. Plus the press knows where it is.
I dare you to tell me he is not clueless enough to pick this venue.
Lily on January 28, 2010 at 9:28 PM
I hear that San Francisco and Dover, Delaware are available!
GarandFan on January 28, 2010 at 9:29 PM
The best city to try these a*holes in is a place called Guantánamo Bay. I hear that its got excellent security already in place.
Electrongod on January 28, 2010 at 9:29 PM
The problem isn’t the location of the trial. Nobody is going to want this thing in their backyard. The problem is that they want to have a civilian trial in the first place.
Mark1971 on January 28, 2010 at 9:29 PM
Here’s an idea …. have the trial in downtown DC. Use the building closest to the Capital.
Want to quess why the libtards would reject that request?
David in ATL on January 28, 2010 at 9:30 PM
I’m glad it’s out of NYC but now what? Just another location? I say military tribunals then hang’em!
Urban Infidel on January 28, 2010 at 9:30 PM
Unfortunately Obama will likely never realize how stupid he is……..right?
Everything this administration has touched is a mess and this is the biggest.
I’ve got an idea, how about Washington DC ir whatever the jurisdiction is closest to the WH and capital.

The White House. Holder is already on the premises most of the time so he can oversee the operation; KSM can sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom.
PBHO won’t mind, I mean security is already tight and all, he can show the nation that he too is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.

A tent in the middle of the Great Salt Flats.
Or better yet, the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository. Hell, it’s not being used yet. They could schedule a grand opening to coincide with the day the jury comes in with the verdict.

Bishop on January 28, 2010 at 9:47 PM
They could just move the trial across the East River to U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, though that probably doesn’t solve the problem of a publicly angry Mayor Bloomberg or a privately behind-the-scenes irate Chuckie Schumer lighting up the phone lines to Rahm telling him he’s going to cost the Democrats at least one senate seat and the governorship in November.
None of the east coast options are real great for Obama. Newark would probably be the choice, if it wasn’t so close to NYC and would still totally screw up traffic and security in the metro area. Boston? Philadelphia? New Haven? With a governorship in Massachusetts and Senate seats in Connecticut and Pennsylvania up for grabs, those aren’t such hot ideas either. Washington D.C.? Get serious — do you really think the Obama Administration is going to put their own workplace in danger with a terrorist trial.
Best East Coast bet: Baltimore, since a majority of the voters there and in Maryland as a whole will stick to the Democrats more than most other states this fall no matter what Obama does to them. Best Bet for the Stupidest Site Choice: U.S. District Court in Detroit, where the odds of seating someone who’ll be sympathetic to the terrorist and hang the jury is probably higher than anyplace else in the country (OK, maybe not San Francisco, but having a huge jury pool out of the Dearborn area would be about on the level of stunt Holder’s Justice Department would pull off.)
jon1979 on January 28, 2010 at 9:48 PM
Palmyra Island is even more remote. And really creepy.

DG is always nice. In fact I was once on a school-type bus full of drunken sailors when it crashed into the corner of a building (driven by another drunken sailor). As we ran from the MAA’s and Shore Patrol, we remarked what a wonderful place it was.
Bishop on January 28, 2010 at 9:57 PM
Sorry Bish. Tru dat.
BTW/ KSM could also do field trips to the local Somali mosques. They are doing a “bang-up” job of exporting suicide bombers and jihadi wanna-be’s out of the TC’s and back to Mog.
