Report: Obama tells DOJ to consider alternative venues for KSM trial

posted at 9:23 pm on January 28, 2010 by Allahpundit

Read the fine print. There’s no hint that KSM’s being sent back to a military tribunal, only that he may end up being tried in a civilian court not located in New York. Which isn’t entirely smart, by the way: As I said from the very beginning, if there’s any city with the security apparatus in place to deal with threats from jihadbots, it’s my hometown. But if even Bloomberg, who just started his third and last term as mayor and has no electoral incentive to oppose the trial, is now also against it, maybe I need to rethink my assumptions.

White House officials have told the Justice Department to consider other venues for the 9/11 terror trial that was to be held in lower Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.

The decision came after Mayor Bloomberg and other politicians across the state railed against President Obama’s plan to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Manhattan Federal Court.

Boehner all but guaranteed yesterday that the trial was off. Today none other than Dianne Feinstein piled on, which might have convinced The One that even leftist support for an NYC trial was too shaky ahead of the midterms. Quote: “There are other places to try it in the U.S. that are much more remote, much less a target, and much less a squatting ground for propaganda around the world.” Here’s a sample from Liz Cheney’s group of what the Dems will be looking at in October if they don’t follow through on this.

Update: Sounds like the KSM scoop is for real. Major Garrett’s hearing the same thing.

Yessir, you and I know that but according to the administration all is well and good.

To prove that everything is fine at the White House, and that the place isn’t in disarray, PBOH should host KSM even though his own family would be sleeping nearby. It’s perfectly safe, just like Holder promised NYC would be.

Bishop on January 28, 2010 at 10:14 PM

I does not matter were it still a trial with all the rights given to KSM.He should be sent back to the military now.

I’m still stuck on Area 51…

The Security is already in place, it won’t cost us a $0.10, except for his lawyers, who will be denied access or denied access to leave.

No reporter will have access.

KSM won’t be able to use it as a world wide propaganda stage,

… and just think of the “I wish I was back in Gitmo” stories.

You may have a point. In fact, all terrorists should be confined there from now on. In a couple years, Al Quada will release another video mentioning not Gitmo but Area 51 and the left will say Area 51 is being used as a tool for recruiting terrorists. Then we can say that Area 51 doesn’t exist.

Texas maybe? lol :-)Mid West states?? :-) or maybe Massachusetts, who knows…:-) His only real other chance would probably be Chicago (they are so desperate for cash there, they would do anything), or California some place…maybe mayor Villaragoisa or Newsom will ‘offer’ their cities as venues :)…so mnay criminals there, w few terrorists won’t make a difference :-) I know for sure the Govweator won’t offer Sacramento :-) (I know coz I live there)…though this might be a little unpalatable even for the SF and L.A. leftards….

Simple…He would have to sign off on any execution order, which will never happen.

Remember, in their world, 9/11 wasn’t an act of war against the US, it was a “crime”. And what is so pathetic is that they still fail to realize that the crime approach is what enabled bin Laden to pull off 9/11. After all, it was planned before Bush was even elected.

The fact that charges have been dropped doesn’t mean that they cannot be reinstated. The juries in various military commissions proceedings haven’t been selected, so no double jeopardy has attached. The military-commission option remains alive and well.

This looks like where the argument is going down right now. If not New York, what jurisdiction? I guess the only one other than New York would be the jurisdiction of the Pentagon. I think that’s in Virginia. But they really have no reason not to reinstate the military charges.

His ratings would considerably improve even if his most of his bleeding-heart base would scream like babies. But he’s not that smart.

Chessplayer on January 29, 2010 at 12:04 AM

Del Dolemonte on January 28, 2010

Nope.

It’s exact terminology.

For years the Government and the Military have claimed, with a strait face, Area 51 doesn’t exist, this is true, Area 51 doesn’t exist.

For whatever reason “Experimental Aircraft” the Government and the Military don’t want to talk about it.

The official Government/Military position is this.

DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
Washington DC 20330-1000
Office of the Secretary
[redacted] AUG 1998

[redacted]
Dear [redacted]
This responds to your letter to the Secretary of the Air Force regarding “Area 51.”
Neither the Air Force nor the Department of Defense owns or operates any location known as “Area 51.” There are a variety of activities, some of which are classified, throughout what is often called the Air Force’s Nellis Range Complex. There is an operating location near Groom Dry Lake. Specific activities and operations conducted on the Nellis Range, both past and present, remain classified and cannot be discussed publicly.
We hope this information is helpful.

Sincerely

[signed]
JEFFREY A. RAMMES, Major, USAF
Chief, White House Inquiry Branch
Office of Legislative Liaison

Military bases are “address” by sections known as areas.

If you were on a military base looking for building 23XXX you would first have to go to 23 Area.

By using strict military terminology they don’t have to answer any questions about a place that doesn’t exist.

There is no Area 51 at Groom lake

There is a 51 Area at Groom lake, but if they don’t ask about 51 Area, then they are under no obligation to to tell the person asking the question, how to ask the question.

DSchoen on January 29, 2010 at 12:39 AM

KSM and others like him should be “tried ” in Washington DC and when they are found not guilty , they can be moved to friendly surroundings into Hussain’s vacant house in Chicago.

First off, Obama isn’t smart. Despite the press coverage he is a dim bulb. Intellecually incurious and insecure that everybody is beginning to see just how dumb he is.

More importantly, he is unable to see his own flaws. The rat bastard traitor really thinks he turned in a B+ performance last year. He will not backtrack on trying these terrorists as jaywalkers. It’s a big enough deal that he’s even looking to find another place for the trial.

Let’s face it. For any American citizen that worries about paying the bills and working for a living, Obama is far worse than they had imagined. For the rich…they don’t care too much because they have lawyers and accountants etc to keep their money away from the government and they don’t worry about losing their house or having the gas and electric turned off. For the poor, from an economic perspective, they will have fewwer jobs to vie for, but other than that, no bigge. For everyone that believes this pres could cause us to get nuked or subject to other WMD…there is alot to worry about.
