Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on January 28, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Tonight Mr. Obama proved—once again—that he hears the American music and can play it like a maestro. As well as Ronald Reagan. Both presidents had—have—have music in their souls. The other people in the room where I watched the speech were in tears by the end—the kind that stream down the face. I managed to hold those back. But I could not hold back my admiration at the performance, in particular of Mr. Obama’s deep humanity, as evinced by his profound, almost Lincolnesque humor. Oh dear, are tears streaming down my face, one way or the other?

“He proved himself capable, too, of drama, as when he (figuratively) pointed a finger at the Supremes, sitting in their courtly robes directly in front of him, hands demurely folded, and accused them (in my opinion, unjustly, to say nothing of injudiciously) of allowing ‘foreign enemies’ to influence our elections. I had been under the impression that it was called ‘free speech.’ But never mind. It was an electrifying moment. Thank you, Mr. President.

“An electrifying evening, all in all.”

***
“The central fact of the speech was the contradiction at its heart. It repeatedly asserted that Washington is the answer to everything. At the same time it painted a picture of Washington as a sick and broken place. It was a speech that argued against itself: You need us to heal you. Don’t trust us, we think of no one but ourselves.

“The people are good but need guidance—from Washington. The middle class is anxious, and its fears can be soothed—by Washington. Washington can ‘make sure consumers . . . have the information they need to make financial decisions.’ Washington must ‘make investments,’ ‘create’ jobs, increase ‘production’ and ‘efficiency.’…

“Why would anyone have faith in that thing to help anyone do anything?”

***
“Obama insists that Americans need to muster the courage to agree with him, to sign on to his agenda. Just as at Omaha Beach and Bull Run, Americans need to show their mettle. ‘Again, we are tested. And again, we must answer history’s call.’ That ‘call’ is the call of Obama.

“‘I never suggested that change would be easy, or that I can do it alone.’ So come on, you slackers, fall into line…

“Other politicians are vain, cowardly and insubstantial. They need the courage to change. Meanwhile, Obama is great the way he is.”

***
“After a series of political humiliations, Obama called on Republicans to change their course. Facing a general revolt against Washington, he proudly took credit for posting the names of White House visitors online. Promising to change the tone in Washington, he managed to be petty, backward looking, defiant and self-justifying.

“Barack Obama has lost his promise. He has lost his momentum. He has lost his touch. He has lost his filibuster-proof Senate majority. He has lost his first year in office.

“Tonight, he lost his grip on reality.”

***
“The public thinks Obama doesn’t get it; Obama thinks the public doesn’t get it.”

Christopher Buckley is certainly not a case of “the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Not unless the acorn hit it’s head really hard when it hit the ground.

MB4 on January 28, 2010 at 10:38 PM

While the Democrats at times seemed to be considering the exits, the Republicans in the crowd handled the event with a renewed sense of confidence. A few minutes before Obama arrived, Republican Representative Mike Pence, standing in Statuary Hall, explained that he had turned down a chance to run for the Senate so he could help lead Republicans back to power in the House. “This is a genuine, authentic, American movement,” he said of the political winds that had won Republicans statewide races in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Virginia.

I hope AoSHQ posts the Buckley quote. The things that need to be said about it are ban-worthy here.

Osama Obama himself — Himself? — is one of the few who can rival Buckley in the area of spewing mindless, self-important and ultimately stupid verbal diarrhea.

That ‘call’ is the call of Obama.

Away out here they have a name for lice and frogs and locust
The lice is Nancy, the frog is Harry and they call the locust Obama

Obama blows liberty away and sets the constitution a-flyin’
Obama makes the countryside sound like freedom was out there dyin’

Obama (Obama)
Obama (Obama)
They call the locust Obama

Before I knew Obama’s name
And heard his wail and whinin’
I had a country and it had me
And the sun was always shinin’

But then one day He, Pelosi and Reid betrayed me
And left me far behind them
And now I’m lost, so gone and lost
Not even God can find me

However Obama’s grasp of reality may be fairing, his grasp on the reins of power are faltering. Surely the cadre of SDS/Weathermen thet propelled him into office can see happening as well. They have not come this far(their hey-day was ’68)to relinquish what they’ve worked so hard towards the last 40yrs, soon its gonna get really ugly. If you’ve never seen Larry Grathwohl’s(FBI) tesimony of what these lunatics thought what would be necessary to maintain their grasp once attained, you should.

Die hard Capitalists? Uhmmm, that would be me, and methinks most of the HA loyal.

We have won some recent skirmishes in ’09, and look to expand our beachead in ’10, but this is far from over folks. Theses critters are dead(ly) serious folks. They have played the long game to get here and honestly beleive in the ends justify the means. Really.

Judging from the Grathwohl interview, The White House’s most frequent visitor-Andy Stern(SEIU)- and his famous quip about not being believer of the power of persausion, so much as the persausion of power… If theings are looking really dicey for these sociopaths going into ’12, would a Declaration of Emergency/Police State powers be beyond them?

I really dont’ know, but I find it discocerting. To say the least.

It’s hard to tell if Buckley Junior’s piece is a parody or not as it is not much more over the top than what he was earnestly saying just months ago.

Electrongod on January 28, 2010 at 11:20 PM

I was taken aback by Chris Buckley’s SOTU review. Has he decided or calculated that he can never return to the principles that brought him his original acclaim? I know he has a keen mind but perhaps he has looked around at his new surroundings and said “If I do a 180 on Obama now, I won’t be accepted back into the fold of republicans without a thorough beating.” It is perhaps that thought of what have I done and how will I proceed that weighs the heaviest on his mind. It’s too bad really because the perception or fear of a beating is usually ten times greater than the beating itself. Chris Buckley in my humble opinion has made another grave miscalculation.

Today’s State-of-the-Union speech must allay lingering doubts about his leadership.
————————————————————
Barack’s problem involves growing skepticism about his leadership abilities, having already failed to deliver bipartisanship to Washington. When he crusaded for president, Obama spoke often of a new post-partisan era, where liberals and conservatives could join hands for the common good. His decision to allow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to direct White House efforts on health care reform demonstrated weak leadership skills, especially allowing the country to divide itself along ideological lines. Not a single Republican elected official supported Barack’s health care reform, partly due to the GOP’s attempt to derail Obama’s political freight-train. Republicans and independents, like Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), couldn’t trust Barack’s reassurances about the effect of health care reform on the U.S. economy.

The Oratorical Prowess of Barack Obama
—————————————-
Obama is an expert at using rhythm and cadence during his speeches to involve his audience. Frequent pauses during his speeches allow the audience to participate by cheering, clapping, and chanting. It also gives listeners the chance to actually absorb what he is saying. Experts note three advantages to using well placed pauses during a speech.

There’s nothing really to get. Obama’s speechifying has always been overrated. He just goes into that fake black-Southern-preacher thing which has suburban white libs eating out of his hand.

“I hope we have big changes in 2010,” the friend said. Only significant loss will force the president to focus on spending. “To heal our country we need to get the arrogance out of the White House and the elitists out of the Congress. We need tough love. We need a real adult in the White House because we don’t have adults in the Congress.”

But..but…but….getaclue assured us that the adults were in charge.
