Matthews: Uh, I meant that everyone else forgot Obama was black
posted at 12:15 pm on January 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Chris Matthews decided that he needed to clarify his earlier remark about how the SOTU speech made him forget that Barack Obama was black. Unfortunately, Matthews seems to have a confusion now over cause and effect. He claims that growing up in a segregated nation gives him better insight into the meaning of Obama being President, and that Obama has just now started to lead this country from its past. Rachel Maddow looks unconvinced at the end:
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
For most of us, the fact that this nation elected Obama as President showed that those divisions no longer exist in practical terms. Obama’s leadership had very little to do with this; he’s the effect of decades of civil-rights efforts to bring down those barriers. Matthews has it exactly backwards. John Kennedy may not have had an African-American cabinet member, but his successor did, and we have had African-Americans in high federal office for at least five decades. His “at least in presidential politics” qualifier is exceedingly strange after an address to Congress, which has a strong and influential Congressional Black Caucus.
Besides, it’s somewhat amusing to see Matthews sparkling over a color-blind society when he repeatedly accuses people of latent racism in opposition to Obama’s policies, on a network that features no African-American show hosts, and whose news anchor sees racism in pickup trucks. The problem with Matthews’ original comment and his “clarification” is that the rest of the nation has moved on from seeing issues through a race-oriented lens, while Matthews insists on clinging to it — with embarrassing results, as with his analysis of Obama’s SOTU speech.

I think it’s funny that guys like Matthews look for ‘signs’ of racism everywhere they can, but then drop an actual racist statement on national television without skipping a beat.

And if Obama had truely wanted to bring us beyond “black and white” he would have asked for an end to Afirmative Action and racial quotas in his SotU. Really hard to say we still need those things when the POTUS is half black.

Chris Matthews can’t spin his racist remark. It was latent, but it shows what’s in his own heart.
There are SO few people that dislike Obama because he’s black.
He’s been ineffective, he’s wasted the country’s time with healthcare when he should have been concentrating on the economy. He’s a Chicago style politician who has lied to us about change…
He’s not a bad President because he’s black, he’s simply a bad President.

Matthews’ “Magic Eye” Moment:
Chris Matthews’ reaction reminds me of watching someone stare at one of those 3D “magic eye” pictures:
“Wow. For a moment there, I was so entranced, that I saw him just as a ‘normal’ president. But it’s gone, now. That was weird!”
But what’s really amazing, is that Matthews intended his comment as some sort of compliment to Obama.
Think of any African American acquaintance you have, and envision their reaction to you, if, out of the blue, while listening to the person expound on whatever, you piped up with:
“Wow. For a moment there, I forgot you were black.”
Think you’d get a: “Why thank you. That’s one of the nicest things I’ve heard in a long time” ?
Me neither.
notropis on January 28, 2010 at 12:25 PM
“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy, I forgot he was black for an hour.”
Akzed on January 28, 2010 at 12:25 PM
Not to get too technical but, Mr. Matthews is repressing his racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobia (leg tingle), and the repressed content is screwing around with his speech. It’s called parapraxis and is mildly amusing to those around him.

kingsjester on January 28, 2010 at 12:26 PM
I’m not quite sure that what you think that you’re explaining actually means what you think that it does, Mr. Mathews. We’re still perplexed that, given the context given above by Ed Morrissey, you could arrive at such a statement regarding your memory and the color of the presidents skin. I find it hard to fathom, that given your position in the media, that you could utter such an insensitive and racist statement regarding the duly elected president of the United States.

Why does Rachel Maddow stay at the racist MSNBC? It’s two big stars are the racist Chris Matthews and the racist Keith Olbermann. The fact that those two haven’t been at least suspended over their racial remarks tells me tha MSNBC is a racist network.

I swear the only ones still hanging on to the idea that race matters all the much in today’s society are those that profit from the notion (and that includes CM).
President Obama’s race is the one and only thing that is a positive about Mr. HopeNChange. MLKs dream came true. Of course now we judge Obama by the content of his character and that is woefully lacking.

” A big thinker who talks about stuff thats tough to talk about”
Huh?
Chrissy initially rambles about forgetting Obama was black – then attempts to clarify his remark through another maze of racial projection – with of course the token white man “I grew up in segregated America”, whereas he recounts JFK’s cabinet (50 years ago) not having a black member – yet leapfrogs to last night, regardless of black American accomplishments – as if the last 50 years was a vacuum…
His correction actually makes his initial statement look worse, if possible.
Did Chrissy notice the black cabinet members, SCOTUS justices, black congressional members over the past 50 years???
I want to know why he hasnt noticed them.
Odie1941 on January 28, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Sadly, liberal racism is alive, well and accepted here in America.
But if a conservative criticizes Obama’s policies, they’re the first ones screaming about racism.

Obama sure hopes other Americans don’t forget he’s black.
Honestly, Obama’s being black is, after all, a principal reason why so many Americans, notably leftist elites, voted for him.
ChrisB on January 28, 2010 at 12:39 PM
The only thing easy to forget while listening to Obama is that we still live in the “land of the free.” For how long?
RBMN on January 28, 2010 at 12:39 PM
This couldn’t have been worse for Chrissy if he had said, “That speech was mighty white of him!”
Chrissy is a typical lib, thinking he’s non-racial and ‘tolerant’ by saying what he did. What he forgets is that blacks want to be seen as black, and still have all the same rights to the same measure as every other Citizen. That’s not mere ‘tolerance’, that’s true liberty and equality. That’s what the Civil Rights movement was all about.
Chrissy stepped in this one big time, though I can’t imagine any consequences for it.

Quite frankly, I’m surprised Pissy Chrissy has remembered to remove that sheet from his head, before he goes on air.

Whether it’s their tendency towards racism or national socialism, it’s all the same.
Colbyjack on January 28, 2010 at 12:40 PM
What Chrissy is trying to say is that if people actually watched his show he wouldn’t be so misunderstood.
Take heart there Chrissy. If your tenure as being a failure at MSNBC comes to an end you probably can get a make-work job being a failure over on PBS.
