Democrats’ new secret weapon in pushing amnesty? Lou Dobbs
posted at 8:53 pm on January 28, 2010 by Allahpundit
Explain this to me. He’s not running for office — allegedly — yet still feels the need to reverse course on the one issue above all others that’s made him internationally famous?
What’s next? An amnesty luncheon hosted by Pelosi featuring the boss as guest speaker?
Senate Democrats have reached out to former CNN anchor and prominent illegal-immigration opponent Lou Dobbs in an effort to build broad bipartisan support for immigration reform.
Winning the support of Dobbs, who became a prominent critic of illegal immigration and proposals to grant amnesty to illegal workers, could provide a significant boost to reform efforts…
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is spearheading the Democrats’ effort to put together a comprehensive reform bill, met with Dobbs on Wednesday…
Dobbs was an outspoken critic of waiving penalties against illegal workers but has since said that government officials should consider legalizing illegal immigrants “under certain conditions.”
Schumer noted that Dobbs, who left CNN in November, is “changing his views on immigration.”
For once in his life, Schumer’s not lying. Via TV Newser, skip around to 5:40 below and listen to him tell Terry Moran, flat out, “Hell yes, I’m changing my tune. Absolutely.” Exit question: He’s totally running for something, right?

Of course, he still couldn’t win.
He won’t receive enough GOP support and Dems will dig up his old statements in a primary. As an Indy he’ll be painted as a flip-flopper and destroyed.

As much as I despise the Senate DemonRats as the communist, lying, pieces of garbage that they are, I usually don’t think of them as politically stupid. Just cunning and deceitful.
But this batch of morons seem to go looking for the worst possible issues on which to impale themselves, ever since we put O’Bozo in the White House. It’s almost as if they are trying to lose control of congress and the Presidency as fast as possible.
Or maybe they really are this stupid.
Jaibones on January 28, 2010 at 8:59 PM
Maybe it was all an act at CNN so they could “counter” O’Reilly’s brand of populism? He’s not really changing his tune, he is just finally admitting that he never believed the garbage he was spewing. I would not put it past CNN. You have to try something like this if your business were getting trounced in the ratings for 10 straight years, right?

Given the economy, what jobs are there that Americans won’t do? Field hands, maybe?
The Dems have to get past the unemployment issue. Take the number of illegal aliens and translate that into jobs that could go to Americans. Then let them explain.

Dobbs has converted, he’s now a progressive. Its easy to spot a progressive as they’ll do a 180 on a dime on any issue of contention.
Progressives of the early 20th, rallies with the KKK, Jim Crow and write hit songs that praise Mussolini.
Progressives of the late 20th/early 21st, claim to be the only ones looking out for AA’s, pass laws that keep them in wretched dependence and call Republicans Fascist/Racists. Despite the fact that Republicans freed the slaves-Lincoln(R)-and fought for the repeal of Jim Crow and equality under the law M.L.King(R).
Gives ‘em away every time, I’m telling ya.

10-15% unemployment throughout the country, unsustainable debt and millions of American citizens out of jobs. So Democrat propose amnesty for illegals, giving them benefits WE pay into and taking our jobs AND adding to the debt.
Oh yeah, that one is almost as smart as the Hindenberg made out of cast iron. Dems want to latch onto Dobbs popularity but it sounds more like Dobbs is jerking their chain knowing that, so he proposes the dumbest thing he can think of to make sure the Democratic party wipes themselves out of existance in 2010. Doesn’t really matter whether Lou is serious or not. What matters is Democrats going down this path to extinction
Go to town Dems, shove amnesty down Americas throat, just like you did tried with Obamacare. It will be so much fun for us former Democrats to watch you self destruct
Niteowl45 on January 28, 2010 at 9:47 PM
Won’t work – I never trusted Dobbs and no one really does and … well he was pretty much slaughtered by every liberal organization in the nation – who called him every name up to and including fascist.

Open up 245(i) for a brief period and allow adjustment of status for a hefty fee if anyone has reason to be here (married to an American, or have an offer for an in-demand job). But a blanket amnesty would be ruinous and would encourage more illegal immigration. Reagan’s biggest mistake. Huge.

It’s not just unemployment. Once tens of millions of poor, unskilled, undereducated illegals become legalized, they’ll have the same right to taxpayer-funded benefits (e.g., food stamps, Medicaid, welfare, Social Security, etc.) as every other American. Our entitlement programs are already trillions of dollars in the hole; adding tens of millions of Third World poor to the rolls just guarantees that we’ll go bankrupt that much sooner. We’ve been pretending for decades that we could afford to allow Mexico and other Third World countries to export their poverty to our shores — but the truth is, we can’t afford it, and we never could.

Lou Dobbs needs to change but not on the illegal immigration issue. If Lou Dobbs wants support of the masses, he’ll stay firm on illegal immigration – the area he desperately needs to change/re-evaluate himself is on the issue of Israel. Being critical of Israel for defending herself when katyusha rockets were being lobbed into northern Israel, hurt him considerably. It almost smacked of anti-semitism.

immigrantchick on January 29, 2010 at 10:48 AM
I don’t get it. It seems to me that he’d be better off with his original stance on illegal aliens if he were running for an office given the mood of the country right now. That is, of course, unless he’s running for something in LA or Miami. I’m scratching my head.
orlandocajun on January 29, 2010 at 10:53 AM
I have experience with immigration, both legal and illegal. For example, in CA, when illegals become legal or when you get legal immigrants from south of the border, they expect the same salaries as other legal workers and they generally stop working as hard as their illegal brethren. Thus, businesses that thrive on illegal cheap labor then require more illegals to flood in. Thus, if illegals are granted amnesty, they will demand higher wages, less work and then the business that hired them will want more illegals to come to the US. What then, amnesty for them as well, and the door keeps swinging one way? This country needs to slow immigration significantly and only allow in educated needed folks, otherwise we will have a banana republic.
