AP’s ten whoppers from the SOTU speech
posted at 9:30 am on January 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Only ten? Maybe the Associated Press got as tired as everyone else listening to Barack Obama’s lengthy State of the Union speech last night and stopped paying attention after an hour. AP’s headline focuses on the “toothless commission” that Obama demanded, but the other nine fails on their fact-check test are just as interesting and revealing (via Geoff A):
President Barack Obama told Americans the bipartisan deficit commission he will appoint won’t just be “one of those Washington gimmicks.” Left unspoken in that assurance was the fact that the commission won’t have any teeth. …
OBAMA: “I’ve called for a bipartisan fiscal commission, modeled on a proposal by Republican Judd Gregg and Democrat Kent Conrad. This can’t be one of those Washington gimmicks that lets us pretend we solved a problem. The commission will have to provide a specific set of solutions by a certain deadline. Yesterday, the Senate blocked a bill that would have created this commission. So I will issue an executive order that will allow us to go forward, because I refuse to pass this problem on to another generation of Americans.”
THE FACTS: Any commission that Obama creates would be a weak substitute for what he really wanted — a commission created by Congress that could force lawmakers to consider unpopular remedies to reduce the debt, including curbing politically sensitive entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. That idea crashed in the Senate this week, defeated by equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans. Any commission set up by Obama alone would lack authority to force its recommendations before Congress, and would stand almost no chance of success.
Of course, even his first proposal was a rather dishonest dodge of accountability, especially for Democrats. A bipartisan commission that recommended tax hikes as a means of raising revenue would allow Democrats to shove part of the blame for raising taxes in a recession on Republicans. It would allow more of them to tell voters, “Well, we committed to doing what the commission demanded,” or “We had to accept the commission’s findings in toto based on the rules established for it,” or other such nonsense. We already have a bipartisan commission with 535 members to handle budgetary decisions — it’s called Congress.
The other whoppers:
- Spending freeze – The AP points out that it will save less than 1% of predicted deficits over the next ten years — and that Obama scoffed at such a plan when John McCain proposed it in 2008.
- Health care – Obama said the Democratic plan would allow people to keep their insurance and their doctors, but the bill doesn’t guarantee either. Their plan has massive cuts to Medicare Advantage, which would definitely affect coverage of a large portion of America’s seniors and disabled.
- Lobbyists – Obama has not “excluded” lobbyists from his administration; he’s hired over a dozen for key posts, and the AP notes seven of those waivers were for White House posts. Obama called for restrictions on lobbyist contributions, but those already exist.
- Two million jobs saved through Porkulus – The CBO puts the theoretical range between 600K and 1.6 million, but also cautions that the methodology of estimating jobs “saved or created” is “uncertain.” The last detailed numbers the White House produced totaled 650,000 — and were found to be highly inaccurate.
- Openness: “Obama skipped past a broken promise from his campaign — to have the negotiations for health care legislation broadcast on C-SPAN “so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies.” Instead, Democrats in the White House and Congress have conducted the usual private negotiations, making multibillion-dollar deals with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and other stakeholders behind closed doors. Nor has Obama lived up consistently to his pledge to ensure that legislation is posted online for five days before it’s acted upon.”
The last two are on the rate of killing al-Qaeda leadership and the status on START talks with Russia. In both cases, the AP suspects that Obama overstates his case, but also reports that it’s difficult to measure either. The US has never given body counts on fighting AQ in the Af-Pak theater, mainly because many of the operations are covert, and because enemy body counts fell out of favor with the Vietnam War and have been only reluctantly shared in other conflicts.
Let me add at least one other whopper that the AP doesn’t mention. Obama repeatedly insisted that he inherited massive budgetary problems from George Bush, but the Con Law professor may want to retake his high-school civics class. Congress passes budgets, not the President, and the last three budgets came from Democrats. In three years, they increased annual federal spending by $900 billion, while the admittedly profligate and irresponsible Republican Congresses under George Bush increased annual federal spending by $800 billion — in six years. And during the last three years before taking office as President, Obama served in the Senate that passed those bills, and he voted for every Democratic budget put in front of him.

The most important thing that was said last night was when Gov. McDonnell said that the national debt is now $100,000 for every American family. I suggest we all start repeating that everywhere we can. There isn’t an American anywhere who can be comfortbale with that or believe it is sustainable.
rockmom on January 28, 2010 at 10:15 AM
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

We have a civilian-led military. It would be inappropriate for them to respond to political statements. What I am surprised is how little bang his call for Congress to repeal DADT has had. I guess everybody realizes that it was nothing more than throwing a bone to those who thought that the homosexual lifestyle would be legitimized under this President/Congress.

No, actually, it is the first thing. Government spending crowds out private spending, and isn’t as efficient.
No, what leads to unemployment is the failure to adjust wages down to the new (temporary) equilibrium. Unemployment is a surplus of offered work hours, which persists until prices drop.

The rank unproffesionalism and casualness he has given the office of presidency is astounding as well, what with the shoutouts, aside comments jokes, finger pointing and dressing down of the judical branch we are in for an abysmal 3 more years.
Koa on January 28, 2010 at 10:25 AM
At what point do people start looking at the President and saying, “If you want to keep blaming the previous administration, why did you even take the job in the first place? You are not the first President to come into office during problems.” For instance, everyone was pretty confident there was going to be a stock market crash in 2001 or 2002 after the huge bubble from the 90s. Rather then repeatedly blaming it on the previous administration, Bush worked with Congress and let the market recover.

Additionally, I wish someone would have pointed out the “pay-go” legislation President Obama is claiming is needed. The pay-go that he is talking about is a scheme which allows Congress to avoid making tax cuts and continue increasing spending. The Pay-go scheme that he wants will treat tax cuts and increases in federal spending differently. For a tax cut, the Congress would have to identify where it was getting the money to make such a cut and count the entire amount. The same would be true for a NEW program, but not new spending. If the Congress wants to increase spending in an existing program, or one that expires, they do not have to show where they are getting the money for the entire program, they only have to show where they are getting the new spending. Hypo: Federal program costs $200 billion and expires this year. Congress wants to reauthorize and add $20 billion to that. Congress would only have to show where they are getting that extra $20 billion. Hypo 2: Congress wants to cut taxes that would amount to $200 Billion. Congress has to show where they are getting that entire $200 Billion from. If he really wants meaningful pay-go, it should require existing spending programs to illustrate where they are getting all of the money from, not just new spending.

So why didn’t he spell that out? Why didn’t look directly into TOTUS and say “I will spend every last dollar you have on creating or saving jobs.” :-0
Seriously, I think that this is part of the problem he has with the American public right now. He’s just getting around to focusing on jobs in January 2010. He spent 2009 figuring out ways to take over the auto and financial industries, holding a campaign to sell Obamacare, going to the Hamptons for August, spend the holidays golfing in Hawaii, etc. In other words, Americans spent all of 2009 worried about unemployment and the economy and they resent the fact that Obama is only starting to play catch up in 2010 after a massive political defeat.

That’s not a political statement, and it can be argued that by clapping they were doing what the president requested, showing respect and gratitude to the troops.
(I should add, that until very recently, this wouldn’t be considered a political statement.)

That “rich baritone voice” went AWOL on Obama, leaving his audience to suffer through his screechingly shrill timbred tenor voice that seemed to be re-enacting his first juvenile public speech, carelessly written without credibility. That was one INCREDIBLE piece of propaganda malarkey that stank to high heaven last night.

What really needs to happen is real cuts in the entitlement programs which account for something like 60% of the overall budget. Anything short of that is really doing nothing but nibbling around the edges.
highhopes on January 28, 2010 at 10:33 AM
Universities are no longer self-sustaining as they cost too much for patrons to afford. In a way, they are their own ‘bubble’. Absent an Obama-style intervention and wealth transfer, market forces would start to deflate the college bubble and reduce the amounts that colleges and universities can continue to suck out of the economy.
Obama’s proposals concerning college loans would be yet another wealth transfer from the so-called ‘frugal middle class’ to overpriced universities and their patrons (both of whom spend beyond their means). If enacted this would be one more source of impoverishment for the former working middle class, and one more entitlement for the academic-bureaucratic complex.
To win in this rigged economy, go to college for 10 years, then get a decent-paying GS job on the dime of those who are taking real risks to make ends meet every day, and risk losing everything.
To those who might insist that blue-collar earners would not be asked to sacrifice, I say the real cost is in the continued shrinking of GDP if high earners are asked to pay these taxes, combined with the devaluation of the dollar that would occur in order to escape the debt burden. If our currency is devalued it would wipe out most middle class savings and retirement plans.
I’m jumping a couple steps here and this is only a guess as to what could happen.

Amazing that he went so far only to come up with more trail to hike and he had run out of supplies… then I flipped over to the end of the SOTU and got the same thing, only Obama was in DC going back to the same old, same old and getting nowhere. One was on an endless trail… the other was searching for the City of Gold…

This is the most important meme for 2010; Democrats are claiming that Republican Fat-Cat-ism caused this recession.
This is the Pelosi/Obama recession. Unemployment was 4.6% when Pelosi took over as Speaker. 8.1 million jobs have been lost since the Democrats took the House. (U.S. Bureau Labor Statistics) The economic collapse really accelerated when it became clear in 2007 the we were going to elect a “Progressive” president with big majorities in the House and Senate. Why? The markets knew they would spend without limit. Here’s the timeline

I can’t ever bring myself to see so much as a TV commercial with Obowmao, let alone listen to one of his speeches. Going by news reports and commentary, last night’s SOTU has to be the most recriminating and classless one in American history.
Lies, counted by Associated Press, of all groups; bashing the Supreme Court on national television; Congressional Dems giving a standing O for that unprecedented display of arrogance and crass; then Chrissy Matthews later on putting in his two cents.
I’m just appalled at how low liberals are willing to sink. Yet, there will be many who can ‘justify’ all that happened those seventy minutes and afterward.
Then those same people blast the ‘staging’ of the Republican response when three of the four people were members of the governor’s cabinet (the last was a soldier).
Maybe I need more coffee, because I’m too shocked by it all to be angry right now. Never in my life have I heard of the kind of show put on last night. Can anyone imagine if Nixon nationally bashed the SCOTUS about the Roe decision? That would be, to this day, worse than the invasion of Cambodia in the eyes of the Left.
Hopefully, more independents will wake up to the monstrosity that is the American Left and vote accordingly.

So Ed, I’m waiting for you explanation of why an 81-minute, slow and agonizing speech chock full of unprofessionalism and untruths deserves an ‘A’ for delivery, as you wrote on Twitter.
I hold you in some respect, even though we disagree quite often on strategic (mostly in-party) issues. But you and Jay Nordlinger (whom I also greatly admire) missed the boat on this one. It was an atrocious speech even by Obama standards–patronizing, devoid of emotion though full of “compassionate” language, etc. Today’s political discussion should be as much about the epic, one-year flop of the Great One as it is about whether he “pivoted” at all. I could stomach only about 30 minutes of Barackus Hubris Maximus before I unconsciously uttered a grunt of disgust and turned the television off in favor of going back to reading my book. But it was too late. He and his gang of clapping millionaire groupie reprobates even ruined that little bit of evening relaxation (after a 14-hour work shift) for me. What is seen and heard cannot be unseen or unheard.
I seriously and deeply loathe the man. He is a snake oil salesman. A carnival barter. A late night infomercial flim-flam man. Barackus and his entire ilk are liars, cheats, and thieves, and in the worst possible way. They are constantly playing the doe-eyed victims and take zero responsibility for anything they have wrought on us and our country. They aren’t trying to fix anything at all. They all endeavor to destroy our way of life for all time under the guise of being honest, ethical, and transparent.
Barackus and his band of reprobates in Congress and the Senate are not the least bit honest, ethical, or even honorable. They are not the least bit patriots. They are every bit enemies of the state.

There are several “You lie!” moments in the SOTU, and while the AP calls Obama on them, it doesn’t actually label them as lies.
For example, Obama claimed that he has has “excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs.” Well, except for the seven in his administration. And that’s just one place where he lied.

Ed, bravo for adding that last whopper! My husband and I have been screaming this at our tv for weeks.
Obama’s STOU last night was the most disgusting, unpresidential speech I have ever heard. He is not a stand up comedian and I thought the jokes he made showed his inability to understand the position he holds, not to mention it was in poor taste as president. Does he think we are too stupid to remember he was in congress and contributed to the financial problems we face now? He has had the majority in the house and senate yet lacked the leadership skills to bring about health care reform. And for that he blamed the Republicans. He lied about accepting any other suggestions about health care. He lied about the SCOTUS ruling last week. It does not change foreign donations. Also, his attack on the SCOTUS was highly disrepectful and he should issue an apology immediately, but we know he won’t. I hope and pray our country can survive the next several years until we can vote him the heck of out office.

Good point, it’s easy to forget that the dems controlled Congress for 3 of Bush’s 8 years in office since all of the attention was always focused on one man.
The Dems come into town and are doing nothing but throwing water on a grease fire. To expand on that analogy, I see only 3 ways this can end with the current people in power: We run out of water, China stops paying the water bill or everything burns to the ground.

- he reduced automatic withholding without altering liability–95% of America will have to settle up April 15th, and
- the only reason he isn’t tagged as passing huge tax increases is the core project of his first year has failed to land on his desk for signature. His boasting about tax cuts would be like Sonny Liston bragging he never dealt brain damage.

When the Mississippi River overran its banks last winter and several states were flooded along the rivers route, did Obowma say anything about it? Did he declare a national disaster? Offer any aid or support or “feeling their pain”?
Just words, just speeches.

You gotta admire the President’s stamina. Anybody who can complete a whopping 70-minute speech with his pants on fire has got some grit.

More than the whoppers I think his childish outburst about the SOTU bothers me most. Now only does the man lack basic integrity, he lacks even rudimentary class and manners. Is there anyone out there except his bottom kissing fellow lefties that he respects? And, he only respects these because they dance to his tune. What a monumental disaster this guy is!

Sorry. SOTU should read SCOTUS. Depression over all this has unsettled me.

So what do you think of affirmative action now?

Sarah Palin just issued forth a brutally concise and effective takedown of Teh Messiah’s SOTU just about an hour ago.
Clear. Concise. To the Point. The only defect to what Palin is doing is that it belongs in a speech.
