SOTU open thread: Fightin’ president totally ready to fight or something

posted at 8:33 pm on January 27, 2010 by Allahpundit

9 p.m. ET all across the dial. Even a fan like Kathleen Parker can’t believe Mr. First-Class Temperament is trying to boost his numbers by turning into Yosemite Sam harrumphing about “fatcat” varmints, but oh well. Add her to the swelling rolls of Obamites felled by heart-ache. Excerpts of the speech are already circulating online — he won’t walk away from health care, he’s super excited about transparency, he wants to “rescue, rebuild, and restore” America, etc etc — but more interesting to me was how Gibbs described the speech this morning on ABC.

“The president’s going to explain why he thinks the American people are angry and frustrated,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said on “Good Morning America” today.

“Many of the same factors that led Sen. [Scott] Brown to become a senator from Massachusetts led Barack Obama to become president. Now, we’ve got to deal with those angers and frustrations by putting people back to work, by demonstrating we have a plan to get our economy continued on the road to recovery and putting those folks back to work, and protecting our country from those who seek to do us harm.”

The One has always enjoyed psychoanalyzing American voters — look no further than his massively overhyped speech on race — but watching him explain to Massachusetts that they were actually kinda sorta voting for him when they voted for Scott Brown should make this his most entertaining soliloquy yet. He’s also going to “accept responsibility, though not necessarily blame” for his many broken promises, according to the NYT, so keep an eye out for that quality bit of Hopenchange parsing. What it boils down to:

As Mr. Obama navigates a crossroads of his presidency, a moment when he signals what lessons he has drawn from his first year in office, the public posture of the White House is that any shortcomings are the result of failing to explain effectively what they were doing — and why. He will acknowledge making mistakes in pursuit of his agenda, aides said, but will not toss the agenda overboard in search of a more popular one.

He’s doubling down. Be sure to read Sean Trende’s piece today at RCP for why that’s a mystifyingly bad idea.

Just as I’m writing this, the full text of Bob McDonnell’s GOP response is appearing online. I haven’t had time to read all of it yet, but the bullet points — jobs, deficits, less government — are smart nuts-and-bolts stuff and very much what McDonnell won on in Virginia. Should be a good one, for a change. As we wait for the fateful hour, a brief clip to put you in the mood.

Update (Ed): We’re keeping the TEMS chat room open tonight for anyone who wants to participate.  I’m not embedding it in this post in order to keep it from interfering with comments, but just go to my show post and log in from there.

Wasn’t there some new NASA data that came out not too long ago…coulda sworn it said something about warmest decade on record or whatnot…

Karl Marx on January 27, 2010 at 11:42 PM

Yep, but a further look at the data?

NASA THREW OUT over 2/3rds of the historical weather stations for the last few years, even though they kept them in the baseline…

In California, they now count ONE weather station at the San Fran Airport (next to the ocean), and three in Southern California… leaving out all of northern Calif, the Valley, and the Mountains.

They then “extrapolate” the data for the whole state from those stations.

Yeah, reallllly good science… especialy since I WORKED once on the weather station at what used to be Castle Airforce base, in Merced California… but that station, although it transmits data to NASA, is not counted…

Global Warming my Rosey rear end…

NASA is not NOAA, Hansen is a proven AGW disciple, he should focus his energies on the death of his agency at the hands of nObama, if nothe should simply resign and hook up with Al Whore!

Yes, even more cynical than that. Your boys sat down for Pell grants. When it comes time to help bright students who need help paying for college, the GOP sits on its hands. Own it. Wear it with pride.
Karl Marx on January 27, 2010 at 11:58 PM

Pell Grants are a joke. When Pell Grants are awarded to students, many colleges or universities then subtract that Pell Grant aid from any aid provided to the students by the colleges or universities. The total aid package remains the same. I received Pell grants, and they amounted to…a wash. They saved the university from shelling out a few bucks. They ended up saving me nothing.

But when paired with a public university, whose tuition is actually less than the usual pell grant allotment, you have an effective means of providing a college education to those who would otherwise not get one.

and besides, your anecdotal sob story is entirely irrelevant. lets stick to the policy, and not your imagination. theres nothing wrong with pell grants, and theres nothing wrong with increasing funding for pell grants.

BOOOM!

he SCHOOLED YOU

might i add, he’s right on pell grants. it’s a total scam– it just means the university offers you less. what’s the point again? to go to students who have NO OTHER scholarships? well that MIGHT make sense — if some govt worker actually, yknow, FOLLOWED UP ON IT, and MADE SURE THAT HAPPENED

but, like any govt program, there’s no checking, and its a massive WASTE

it also means that schools budget less expenses than usual, so if a pell grant situation changes, they have less money than they thought they did (state schools), so they either hike up tuition or raise student fees to counteract these unexpected shortfalls

yeah GREAT program!

The thing about that is that many of those grants and financial aid go to the children of middle income/upper class parents who know how to game the system. I know this because I did it back in CA. Most “needy” students have secure parents or a financially secure single parent. They just file independently and, voila, join the ranks of the underclass overnight. I was one such needy soul myself for more than a single semester, I must admit.

But when paired with a public university, whose tuition is actually less than the usual pell grant allotment, you have an effective means of providing a college education to those who would otherwise not get one.

Explain to me why they can’t get a student loan? There is plenty of Financial Aid available for those who need it. Pell Grants are, as explained earlier, a joke.

and besides, your anecdotal sob story is entirely irrelevant. lets stick to the policy, and not your imagination. theres nothing wrong with pell grants, and theres nothing wrong with increasing funding for pell grants.

Karl Marx on January 28, 2010 at 12:12 AM

The primary controversy is that a small set of educational institutions comprising 6% of all college students receives roughly 20% of all Federal Pell grant money. University of Phoenix tops this list with Pell Grant revenue of $656.9 million with second and third place held by Everest Colleges at $256.6 million and Kaplan College at $202.1 million for the 2008-2009 educational year. This is combined with accusations of predatory loan practices on students by the highest Pell Grant recipient, University of Phoenix. Additionally, some of the universities that are top recipients of Pell Grants have low completion rates, so students leave with no degree and large indebtedness leading some former students to accuse recruiters of being “duplicitous.” Top recipient University of Phoenix received $3.2 billion in federal moneys of all kinds in 2008, and these federal dollars provided 86% of its revenue (thus, roughly 20% of its revenue came from Pell Grants). University of Phoenix has, among similar online universities, the lowest graduation rate tabulated by OEDB at 4% compared to the median of 37% and a high of 84% for Champlain College.

uknowmorethanme on January 28, 2010 at 12:24 AM

But when paired with a public university, whose tuition is actually less than the usual pell grant allotment, you have an effective means of providing a college education to those who would otherwise not get one.

The average Pell Grant award in 2008 was $2,770. Please support your statement and list the public universities in America that have an annual tuition of less than $2,770. As far as my irrelevant anecdotal sob story, it’s more true and relevant than anything you’ve posted on this matter.

Pell grants were awarded this past year in excess of the yearly tuition of any public college in the state of new york. while the average pell grant indeed only covers a full semester, that same recipient would more than likely make up the difference in direct FAFSA aid. either way, funding should be increased, so as to make the average allotment in line with the average public school tuition.

The Supreme Court decision allows foreign governments or just any entity with tons of cash to greatly influence our elections. It was one of the most detrimental decisions ever made by the Supreme Court. Obama should have spend more time calling them out on it.

You are a damn liar, and you either know it, or you are just ignorant:

President Wrong on Citizens United Case

Tonight the president engaged in demogoguery of the worst kind, when he claimed that last week’s Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, “open[ed] the floodgates for special interests — including foreign corporations — to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities.”

The president’s statement is false.

The Court held that 2 U.S.C. Section 441a, which prohibits all corporate political spending, is unconstitutional. Foreign nationals, specifically defined to include foreign corporations, are prohibiting from making “a contribution or donation of money or ather thing of value, or to make an express or implied promise to make a contribution or donation, in connection with a Federal, State or local election” under 2 U.S.C. Section 441e, which was not at issue in the case. Foreign corporations are also prohibited, under 2 U.S.C. 441e, from making any contribution or donation to any committee of any political party, and they prohibited from making any “expenditure, independent expenditure, or disbursement for an electioneering communication… .”

This is either blithering ignorance of the law, or demogoguery of the worst kind.

This is the most racist nonsense I’ve heard yet on the internet. So a black woman who appears is there because she’s being pandered to and doesn’t know any better? It couldn’t be that she chose to participate because she formed her own political ideology, of course not. I am absolutely offended.

If there was a /report feature, I’d be doing it to both of you.

RachDubya on January 28, 2010 at 12:53 AM

When Obama called for an end to “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” you should have seen the looks on the MILITARY leaders after he got done saying that.

None of them even clapped or moved a muscle they just looked ticked. It was almost funny.

I don’t mind gays in the military as long and they kept their pants zipped up and they can shoot STRAIGHT!

rednebulastudios on January 28, 2010 at 12:55 AM

Oh dear. Alito mouthed “not true” when Obama inappropriately criticized them. Call the presses!!!!!!
Did you criticize Teddy Kennedy for rolling his eyes and puffing his cheeks when Bush pushed the Medicare package as great, great, great? Did you criticize the Democrats in Congress for booing Bush because he expressed an opinion they didn’t like?

NathanG on January 28, 2010 at 12:56 AM

Obama, tonight, has picked a fight with SCOTUS, the Military, Wall Street, Small Business, and the American People.

Watching Bobble Head Joe and Driftwood Nancy Bobbing up and down is making me queasy.

To put in in your Fox News bogeyman world. Consider the influence George Soros can have on a political campaign given that he has unlimited funds. If Soros does not work then (insert evil Democrat bad guy here) and think about how money will now buy elections even more than normal.

Decider on January 28, 2010 at 12:26 AM

Yup, before this SCOTUS ruling, Soros had zero influence on any political campaigns. Your rhetoric is empty, mis-guided and foolish.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 28, 2010 at 1:01 AM

Decider on January 28, 2010 at 12:32 AM

You’re obviously not a Supreme Court pundit either. And, for all of your angst about all of the money that will now flow into political campaigns, I do hope that you hammered the hell out of Nobama when he went back on his promise to accept public financing for his campaign and instead raised several hundred million dollars in ’08, a lot of that money from unknown sources. Zero was a hypocrite for bringing up the Supreme Court decision, it was nothing more than phoney populism. Back when he ran, the money he raised was an expression of free speech. But now, if a corporation offers money to support him or his party in a campaign, it’s suddenly not free speech and he’ll, what, turn down the money? Please…

Kini on January 28, 2010 at 1:11 AM

Oh, and for the trolls:

The Court held that 2 U.S.C. Section 441a, which prohibits all corporate political spending, is unconstitutional. Foreign nationals, specifically defined to include foreign corporations, are prohibiting from making “a contribution or donation of money or ather thing of value, or to make an express or implied promise to make a contribution or donation, in connection with a Federal, State or local election” under 2 U.S.C. Section 441e, which was not at issue in the case.

Quoted from ‘The Corner.’ Oops, looks like Decider was either being purposefully obtuse or was just plain wrong.

Google ‘corporate donations to democrats’ and read how the money has shifted from Republicans to Democrats since 2006. Obama dissed the SCOTUS to throw a bone to the Kos/Huffpo supporters who’ve been standing on building ledges since the ruling came down. Of course, since he’s been fairly anti-business since he got elected, perhaps we’ll all see a version of ‘payback is a bitch’ in the 2010 elections.

Exactly. I’m not to crazy about some of the ideas of the right, and I will readily admit I have my own biases, but seriously. The left had better wise up because the walls are falling down around them. No, I take that back. Don’t do that. I want them to lose. We don’t need a Democratic president and Democratic Congress, nor do we need a Republican president and a Republican Congress. I haven’t wanted divided government so much in my short life. Actually, what should happen is the Dept. of Education should be burned to the ground. Federal aid needs to be strictly curtailed, and FAFSA loans outlawed altogether. Let the states provide their own aid, and let the schools offer grants and scholarships out of their multi-million dollar endowments. Then watch the cost of a college education drop to what is reasonable and affordable again.
