Meltdown in PA: Toomey up 14 over Specter?
posted at 10:55 am on January 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
A new poll by a newspaper collective in Pennsylvania shows Pat Toomey handily beating both Arlen Specter and Joe Sestak in a matchup for the Senate race in November. The Times-Tribune reports that the survey polled 1165 registered voters in Pennsylvania, only 395 of which were likely voters, and found Democrats trailing in both groups, although one has to get past a dozen paragraphs or more to find out:
Among all registered voters, Mr. Specter was tied with Republican former Rep. Pat Toomey at 30 percent with 35 percent saying they don’t know whom to support. Mr. Specter was up by 8 percentage points in an August poll.
That’s an 8-point swing for Toomey in just five months, showing that Pennsylvania voters have had enough of Specter and the Democrats. After all, Specter is the incumbent — and if he can’t get above 30%, he’s not going to be the incumbent for much longer. Thirty-five percent is a high number for undecided, too, even at this stage, which means that most aren’t sold on their current Senator.
However, the news gets worse for Democrats among likely voters:
But among 395 likely voters, Mr. Toomey led Mr. Specter 45 to 31 percent. Mr Toomey led Mr. Sestak by 41 to 19 percent. The pool of likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
Six in 10 voters think it is time for a new senator.
“That’s normally an extraordinarily bad sign for incumbents,” Dr. Madonna said.
You think? That’s no tie. Among people most likely to actually vote, Specter’s share doesn’t increase at all, while Toomey’s goes up 50% over his share in the normal sample. That tells us that voter enthusiasm is on Toomey’s side.
One factor driving this is Barack Obama:
A month after Mr. Obama took office, the F&M poll showed 55 percent thought he was doing a good or excellent job and 36 percent said he was doing a fair or poor job. In the latest poll, that was down to 38 percent good or excellent and 61 percent fair or poor.
The way Pennsylvanians view the president personally also dimmed. In February, 56 percent had a favorable view and 23 percent an unfavorable view. In the latest poll, 44 percent each had favorable and unfavorable views. In October, it was 45 percent favorable, 39 percent unfavorable.
Job approval of 38%? In Pennsylvania, which has broken Democratic in the last few presidential elections? Ouch.
Here’s the problem for Democrats. Sestak may have the best shot at holding onto his own seat in the House. He wants to run against Specter in order to move the Senate seat to the left, but what he may wind up doing is moving both the Senate and House seat to the right by vacating the latter. If Sestak continues to poll this badly against Toomey, how long before someone at the DNC or the DCCC has a sit-down with Sestak to convince him to run for re-election instead?
Clearly, though, Specter is about to get the boot from fed-up Keystone State voters. Democrats might want to push Specter out of the race and find another Democrat with statewide standing to run against Toomey, in the same manner that they pushed Chris Dodd out for Richard Blumenthal in Connecticut. The irony is that Specter switched parties in the first place to cling to power — and now he’s put himself in a spot where neither party wants anything to do with him.

This is Jon Corzine territory for Specter. Toomey has hardly been campaigning at all, just keeping his head down and raising money.
Gonna be a huge GOP sweep in PA. Senate, Governor, and at least 6 House seats and maybe more. Plus the state House will go back to the GOP.

Toomey has been going for Sphincters seat for a long time and I hope he finally gets it!

Please don’t drop out of the primary Specter. You can beat Sestak. Don’t believe these polls. You have another 100 years of legislating ahead of you. Don’t quit, keep up the fight. BECAUSE I WANT THE SATISFACTION OF VOTING YOU OUT IN NOVEMBER!

ahhhh, that’s soooooooo sad for Arlen!
Maybe he can find another “magic bullet” that will save his sagging butt!
Benedict Arnold died a broken man in England. Arlen’s Sphincter’s political career is about to die in Pennsylvania.

Oh, and there isn’t any other Democrat with stature that the party can install if they boot Specter. Ed Rendell has made sure there isn’t a bench. They don’t even have a decent candidate for Governor. None of the Democrat Congressmen in PA have distinguished themselves at all and all of them voted for ObamaCare.

Bad news all around today for Obama, on the day of his first SOTU address.

NRO.
I thought that Porkulus was bad (still do), but perhaps now it at least has a silver lining. Obama and the Dems blew their high opinion polls on that boondoggle, rather than doing Obamacare first.
One of the nicest things about Specter switching (and Cornyn being unable to find another GOP candidate), is that now the NRSC has to support Toomey to pick up the seat.
Wethal on January 27, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Nice link. Though I couldnt care about her or her infamy, I find it interesting that even she has enough sense to conclude: Healthcare reform doesnt mean squat if you dont have a job.
The fact she isnt covered, because she “can’t afford it” – means less than a thriving opportunity to earn more money, i.e. a robust economy with job creation.
Maybe she is editing the SOTU tonight…
Odie1941 on January 27, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Yes, after Toomey was ready to beat Specter in the primary and the brains in the Republican Party in Washington rushed to Specter’s rescue.

Arlen won’t go quietly, he switched parties in a vain attempt to cling to his remaining power. The DNC tries pushing him out in the primary and things will get even uglier.

I still can’t get my arms around why Toomey felt the need to write an unsolicited editorial last year praising the qualifications of then-SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
jay12 on January 27, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Toomey was willing to come to one of the Philadelphia Tea Parties in April back when the MSM was representing them as a small angry fringe group (ok, hasn’t changed that much, but the DC rally showed how middle America the TP people were).

1) She was going to be confirmed anyway – doesnt look like a “Rep obstructionist” 18 months later.
2) High minority population in key cities Reps often lose, namely Philly.
Looks like he had a game plan all along… and it appears to be working.

That could be a QOTD.

Good pulse check, but…
Recall that Martha-Martha-MARTHA was up by double digits on America’s most currently famous pickup truck driver with a lot less time left in the race. Hills was considered a lock for the Dem nominee for Pres in early 2008. Even SNL ran a sketch back in late ’91 or early ’92 called something like “The Race to be the guy who loses to [H.W.] Bush”
Nothing motivates like underdog status. When you’re in the lead, you’ve got a target on your back.
Just sayin’ “chickens…hatched”.

capejasmine on January 27, 2010 at 11:30 AM
rockmom, where in Pa. are you? Chester Co. here (albeit closer to Reading than Philly).
What we really need here, though, is to have Tom Corbett win the governor’s race and the GOP to retake the state House. GOP already has the state Senate and can’t lose it as things now stack up. Grab the redistricting process and put a couple of Dems in against each other (Murtha, if he wins again, out west, and that gasbag Schwartz from Montco vs. either Brady or Fattah come to mind).
Getting rid of Benedict Arlen would be icing on a very tastykake if that comes to pass.

I’m in Bucks. Where we are going to chase that poser Patrick Murphy out of his seat in November.
Corbett is going to win the governor’s race going away and we only need to switch 2 seats to regain the House. So I think we will be in excellent shape for redistricting. And hopefully we can take out Bobby Casey in 2012.

Gerlach is back to running for re-election for his old Main Line/Chester County House seat, which may have ticked off the state GOP, which I think had at least one candidate for the seat. He can be a bit of a RINO (voted to expand S-CHIP), but he held the seat in 2006 and 2008, and that wasn’t easy.
