Quotes of the day

posted at 10:35 pm on January 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

“The president’s core problem is this: what persuadable Republicans want from him is the direct opposite of what his most fervent supporters want. The persuadables want Clinton-style economics; the fervents want share-the-wealth. The persuadables want health-care reforms that protect their medicine and hold the line on costs; the fervents want more generous coverage for the excluded, at the expense of those now getting a good deal. The persuadables want unity and conciliation; the fervents want sharp contrasts.

“When confronted with contradictions like these, the greatest Democrat of them all, Franklin Roosevelt, would airily instruct his aides: ‘Weave them both together.’ Somehow he did it too.

“Could Obama do the same? Well, maybe. To do so he would have to jettison the scapegoat hunting of his recent speeches and rediscover the unity themes of his great 2004 address to the Democratic National Convention. He’d have to remember that he’s not the president of the liberals, but of everybody—and that his job is not to identify substitute targets for blame, but solutions to the problems that beset the country as a whole.”

***
“If Scott Brown has kept President Obama up at night, there could be more sleepless nights at the White House thanks to a new poll that ranks the senator-elect as presidential timber…

“The online news site, newsmax.com, reported that Obama leads Brown by 46.5 percent to 44.6 percent among the 4,163 respondents in a poll with a plus or minus 1.5 percent margin of error. Independent voters, who helped propel Obama into office in 2008, favor Brown 48.6 percent to 36 percent.

“Former Bush strategist Mark McKinnon told Newsmax, ‘The real problem for Obama is that he has lost the middle, and losing the middle means losing independents . . . if you lose independents, you’re going to lose the presidency.’”

Franklin Roosevelt, would airily instruct his aides: ‘Weave them both together.’

FDR was a man who openly prayed over the radio before D-day. I disagree with his economic policies, but, when push came to shove, FDR was a leader–a man of his time with regards to WWII specifically. FDR prolonged the depression -1, but protected this country from the Axis +4.

ted c on January 26, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Newt’s underlying idea of an “alternative party” as opposed to an “opposition party” sounds more like packaging and rebranding. I’m not saying that the GOP doesn’t need to offer alternatives, but sometimes the word “no” is the correct alternative. Newt and many other GOP insiders fail to see how 1994 and 2006 are connected. You can’t laud the former and forget the latter. Over time the “alternatives” offered by the GOP became more and more like what Dems wanted in the first place, until there was such dissatisfaction that the GOP lost it’s base in 06 and 08. If Newt’s idea of “alternatives” is simply to restrain/retard the advance of liberal policies, while nevertheless accepting the underlying premise and/or ideology, then the GOP will once again die by “bipartisanship”. And no, I’m not saying all of the GOP needs to look politically like Bachman, but there needs to be a directional shift. Once that occurs then the moderates within the GOP can restrain the more extreme advances within the GOP; but we will be controlling the direction and underlying ideology, with freedom, free markets, individual responsibility, and a Constitutionally restricted Federal Government being the ends.

Otherwise…

The American People, a.k.a. “Teabaggers” will.

The earlier you start, the more time you have to get it into the minds of the American people, and you force the RINOs to sign onto a Conservative platform, and Dems explain why they would oppose it.

I’ll start…

1) Facing Trillions of debt due to uncontrolled spending and entitlement promises, it is time to harvest the vast resources of energy of the United States of America and become energy independent and join the world market. I PROMISE, using improved technology that protects the environment, to tap every source of oil, shale, coal, geothermal, solar, and nuclear power that is possible, creating millions of jobs, generating revenue, and stabilizing our national security to our nation.

The Republicans need to do more than just promise prosperity for all; a car in every garage, a chicken in every pot.

They also have to explain how they will do that, how the economy works, and how government policy influences the economy.

Then they have to ask, what is the purpose of government? To take from those who have more than they need, and give to those who don’t have enough?

Or is the purpose of government to set the rules under which we all play; with those rules being applied equally to all regardless of party affiliation, skin color, religion, age, social status, and economic status.

What Obama will do is find a way to say something that seems like a ‘weave’…but it will just be a bunch of words…words that are intended to give the appearance that he is the president of everybody, when in fact, he presides over an ideology. There are no people in the country between Barrack’s ears…just words.

Lady al Qaeda protests

The New York Times reports that Lady al Qaeda was ejected from the courtroom — not once, but twice — on Monday for loudly proclaiming her innocence. At least one of Siddiqui’s courtroom supporters is also problematic. The Times adds that In a separate episode between Siddiqui’s two ejections, a spectator who pointed his thumb and index finger like a gun at the jury while mouthing an expletive was taken into custody and later released. The Daily News has more here.

Judge Berman later dismissed two jurors who said they felt threatened. “They were visibly upset,” a court official said, as well they should have been.

I was thinking about Obama and Bush and how they campaigned and what they championed while in Office. Bush said he was a Compassionate Conservative, and he followed that up with:
1. NCLB
2. Prescription Drug Benefit
3. Immigration reform
My point is that the tone of his campaign was similar to what he did. Obama on the other hand promised new politics and a push for what works, not what is ideological, and this was a total fraud.

FIFY. I would argue that Obama became a lame duck the minute he started down this radical socialist agenda. He has been in office with essentially nothing to show for his efforts- including eight months of concentrated effort on seizing healthcare. That is the definition of a lame duck Presidency. Losing a filibuster proof Senate doesn’t help and if the Dems get slaughtered in November- Game over for Obama unless he can effectively jump start his failed Presidency. From the pre-speech leaks, it does not appear that Obama has yet to understand the mood of the American public.

There is no such thing as an awesome one-termer. If you are awesome you will be re-elected. If you are Obama, you make stupid statements to cover your failed administration.

Not one President in modern history has walked away from a second term if he thought he could be re-elected. Nobody looks back at the Carter or GHWB years and talks about how awesome they were in their four years of leadership!

Is that really the safest place for him to stand? In front of Kobe?

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like my president posing with an accused rapist. These are the same type of people that support Roman Polanski. Disgusting.

I think this is a good time to go back and read FDR’s Folly.
