Dems’ new midterm strategy: Make the election about … Birtherism

posted at 9:18 pm on January 26, 2010 by Allahpundit

The “blame Bush” strategy flamed out in Massachusetts so they’re moving on to an even more substantive Plan B.

“Given the pressure Republican candidates feel from the extreme right in their party, there is a critical – yet time-sensitive –opportunity for Democratic candidates,” a DSCC memo, obtained by CNN, states. “We have a finite window when Republicans candidates will feel susceptible to the extremists in their party. Given the urgent nature of this dynamic, we suggest an aggressive effort to get your opponents on the record.”

Specifically, the DSCC wants Democratic candidates to pin down their likely opponents on several hot-button issues, including:

- Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S.citizen?
- Do you think the Tenth Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum healthcare coverage standards?
- Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism, and should never have been created in the first place?
- Do you think President Obama is a socialist?
- Do you think America should return to a gold standard?

Honestly, it’s not a bad strategy. They’ve got nothing left to offer independents, as Brown’s win proved only too well, and they’re too fatally compromised by ObamaCare to recast themselves as small-government types now. If they want to win the center, their best bet — which doesn’t mean it’s a good bet — is to screech about “birthers, ‘baggers, and blowhards,” as Bob Beckel so memorably put it. Besides, these are all good wedge issues to help sow dissent in the Republican ranks. How will McCain answer the Social Security question knowing that Hayworth’s bearing down on him?

After this leaked, the GOP came up with its own list of wedge questions for Republican candidates to use against their opponents. Follow the link and see which side’s talking points are more relevant to the national debate. Exit quotation: “Do you agree with the Obama Administration that terrorists should be afforded the same rights as American citizens, tried in American courtrooms, and ultimately held on American soil?”

If they bring out birtherism, it’s weak. I really don’t care about these birthers. If we let the democrats create the narrative that birtherism is as bad as 9/11 truthers, then we are fools.

I like the idea of questions about the Tenth Amendment. Bring that up for hard debate, and see what happens then. It’s been ignored for a century, because it limits Congress:

The powers not granted to the United States by this Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, belong to the States and to the People, respectively.

Let’s see the Dems get past those words.

Liam on January 26, 2010 at 9:24 PM

Ridiculous, and sorry, but not a good strategy. It’ll make the dems look like fools…some more.

I think it is fair to say that the Dem’s list sound like bunch of sixth graders. The Republicans have the more relevant questions but I bet you that at least one of the goofballs will get caught up in answering one of those stupid questions. They just can’t help themselves.

Cindy Munford on January 26, 2010 at 9:26 PM

This will surely work. It will ignite the base of the Democrat party…at MSNBC.

I encourage them to continue.

How about conservatives mentioning all the taxpayer $$$ which The One has spent hiding his reords. Shoot…he could have saved or created a job or two. Well, at $500,000 each..it adds up.

Or He could have built 40 or 50 apartment units in Chi town. I doubt that Rezko had an honest $5,000 a unit in them but you could spend some more. Now Rez mortgaged them at $75,00 a unit if the um, projects followed form but I’m talking real cost.

What is sooo worth hiding?

- Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism, and should never have been created in the first place?

Ask a lefty what he thinks the PROMISE of SS was and if that’s how it works and if not, who broke the promise.

Whether it represents “socialism” is a canard. SS have been used by the government to steal from the American people and rob from their “savings” accounts.

Let ‘em try to raise the birth-certificate issue.

It’ll be like a rookie sailor manning the boom.

It swung out nice and easy when the wind was following, but darn if that first tack didn’t make it whip around like a haymaker and sweep them off the boat with a cracked skull just when they got comfortable.

More folks listened to the birth-certificate fight than some realize, and many, though not supportive, filed it away under “unsolved cases.”

Let the Dems try to raise it again and it will cast a whole new light on 0-Bama’s dishonesty and suddenly the hiding of all the records will look much more damning, now that a year of 0-Bama’s lies has passed.

Move that one back to the open-case file.

- Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S.citizen?

Sure I do, but it would be helpful if I could see his college grades, writings, and all the other records that are sealed that give insight into his character, ideology, and beliefs.

- Do you think the Tenth Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum health care coverage standards?

Apart from the specifics, yes. Do you believe I have the right to carry a gun under the Second Amendment?

- Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism, and should never have been created in the first place?

No, not really. If they were kept in their original form, money put into a “lock box” not to be appropriated and spent for other ‘social engineering’ projects by liberal democrats, then they would be doing just fine.

- Do you think President Obama is a socialist?

What do you call someone who wants to “spread the wealth around”?

- Do you think America should return to a gold standard?

Why not? We can always print more money and that has some very serious consequences. We can’t always print more gold, which forces you to be prudent in your spending.

- Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S.citizen?

Why don’t they ask if he’s a natural born citizen? It looks to me that the Democrats don’t really want to argue that point.

I don’t think they really want to argue gold standards, either . Ask them what standard exists now and make them explain why it’s a good idea.

The Tenth Amendment they sure don’t want to discuss. Ask them what powers the state has that Congress can’t usurp if they feel like it.

They don’t want to explain how Obama is not a Socialist. Ask them to differentiate between Obama and a Socialist.

Buddahpundit on January 26, 2010 at 9:36 PM

The Republicans have to stay on a strong FISCAL message and avoid any hot-button social issues.

“Birtherism” falls into social issues.

Every Democrat I know is essentially Republican when it comes to the economy/labor, but flock back to the (D) when the issues center on “social” issues: abortion, gays, religion, “global image”. Social issues are far more palpable when times are good because people can intrinsically relate to them more than, say, energy policy.

The national candidates should all press hard that social issues be left to States and municipalities, respond to any Obama “citizenship issues” with “that’s a non-issue,” and strike hard on the economy and taxes via shrinking Federal largess.

Win win win.

lansing quaker on January 26, 2010 at 9:36 PM

The best answer would be to make a joke out of it. For example, “Do you think the Tenth Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum healthcare coverage standards?” “Clearly Congress feels like the Constitution doesn’t stop it from doing anything.” Turn it around like that and hold your ground.

What idiots. This is the strategy the brilliant ones think will win over Indies? Be careful what you wish for Dems. The Independents might start asking questions like, “Yeah, where is the original Birth Certificate?” or “Why haven’t we seen Obama’s transcripts, papers, or complete medical records?”…..

The Dems can’t argue their policy positions because they won’t win that way. Independents and voters are not stupid. The O Team and Democratic controlled Congress own the consequences of their big-government, out-of-control spending, bribes, covert legislation process, and weakening of our national defense policies.

The dems are scared to ask the real question, about natural born citizenship, along with a question of whether a dual citizen can be what the Founders termed a “natural born citizen” when the Founders rejected the idea of American dual citizenship.

Every person the Dems ask this of should turn around and demand that that Dem explain what a natural born citizen is and when the Founders allowed people to hold other citizenships.

They should ask the questioning dem what The Precedent meant when he said, “I was a little Jakarta street kid”. Slumdog Precedent … but without having gotten any of the answers correct.

I don’t see how Social Security and Medicare can be called socialism. Socialism is taking from those who have to give to those who don’t. At least that’s what I see it as. Everyone who works pays into Medicare and Social Security to be used upon retirement. The system has been corrupted because the government hasn’t used the funds correctly but those who pay in are supposed to get it back. That really isn’t socialism, even if it is mismanaged.

The fact is that Obama has NEVER presented his birth certificate to anyone (as opposed to the short-form summary Certification of Live Birth), and has blocked its release. Anyone who says that Obama HAS done so, gets an EPIC FAIL with extreme prejudice, for not studying the issue. Period. And I’m not going to argue with any of you because you’re wrong.

And the problem is that:

1. There are many serious discrepancies in Obama’s own words, both spoken, and written, that can only be addressed by releasing the aforementioned birth certificate, which Obama has spent $1.7 million REFUSING to do.

2. Obama’s people and party called this upon themselves when they forced John McCain to go before Congress to show his birth certificate and then Obama refused.

2. Obama’s people and party called this upon themselves when they forced John McCain to go before Congress to show his birth certificate and then Obama refused.

cane_loader on January 26, 2010 at 9:50 PM

POINT A.
Most people don’t care about Obama’s citizenship.

POINT B.
Most people care about OH I DUNNO CRUSHING UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES WITH HIGHER TAXES TO KICK THEM WHILE THEY’RE DOWN.

So, if ~*you*~ were running for office, which point would you highlight? A, or B?

Thank you in advance.

lansing quaker on January 26, 2010 at 9:53 PM

Hey bottom line. Just show a Hawaii birth certificate that has baby Barak Huisian Obama’s two foot prints that is not printed with a LASER printer that is on circa 1950-60s paper that was typed and signed with a fountain pen and you’d shut those birthers up.

THIS is from the same DSCC that somehow forged a supermajority? I don’t know whether to laugh or cry!

Good heavens those questions were lame.

Hannity received an e-mail from somebody on what the SOTU is going to be about it’s the 3r’s.Rescue, Rebuild, and Restore. The WH would not confirm or deny this. Sounds like something Zero would do.

I was wondering why Chris Matthews was grilling JD Hayworth on the Birther issue tonight.

Apparently, Chris got the memo.

JohnGalt23 on January 26, 2010 at 9:54 PM

Dems’ new midterm strategy: Make the election about … Birtherism

After this leaked, the GOP came up with its own list of wedge questions for Republican candidates to use against their opponents.

MEMO FROM THE GOP TO THE HARD HEADED DEMS— Bring. It.

canditaylor68 on January 26, 2010 at 9:55 PM

The only Birthers who would consider not voting for a non-Birther local GOP candidate tend to be the Tinfoil Hat Brigade, and they are far from reliable GOP voters. Most went for Ron Paul in the last election.

It’s good to have canned answers to all of those Q’s if you’re running for anything.

Mojave Mark on January 26, 2010 at 9:55 PM

WWSBD? What Would Scott Brown Do. My best guest would be to say these questions are not only settled, but immaterial to the important issues facing the American people that need to be addressed, and, that by wasting time on such things the people’s business is not being addressed. It highlights one the problems with Washington, an inability to focus on what’s important…

I agree – let’s call a spade a spade here. Medicare and SS are indeed socialistic programs, but they will be defended by most conservatives because we are familiar with the program and a lot of people actually benefit from them. A principled conservative should call them socialistic, just like a principled conservative should have no issues with corporations bringing in *legal* immigrants for technology related jobs just because they are fair competition.

peter_griffin on January 26, 2010 at 9:57 PM

Here is how we should handle the birther question.

- Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S.citizen?

Yes, but I’m still a birther, for I believe John Edwards fathered a child out of wed-lock while his wife was dying of cancer and tried to keep it secret by paying hush money raised from his campaign and the entourage of journalists following him 24/7 somehow managed to miss to whole indecent.

Geochelone on January 26, 2010 at 9:57 PM

I am proud to see the ‘birther’ issue the #1 question. That means the persistent questions from citizens are having an effect. It IS an issue.

I think he was likely born in HI, but I also acknowledge the possibility that the COLB posted online does not automatically prove a HI birth. HI has a bit of a history with the birth documents being easy to manipulate. WND has an article making the broader case that this is true in many states.

His actions so far lead me to believe he is hiding something. Had he released his college transcripts I don’t think there would be much of an issue.

The MSM fell down on vetting this guy and demanding college transcripts. The citizens are taking up the slack left by those who refuse to cover this story objectively.

cane_loader on January 26, 2010 at 9:50 PM

Hey Cane_loader some questions for you:

1. Have you ever seen a Hawaii Birth Certificate
This first answer is a freebie: No you haven’t. ALL YOU GET IS A CERT OF LIVE BIRTH. There is NO SUCH THING AS A ‘HAWAII BIRTH CERTIFICATE’

2. How does this 2 year old argument help the conservative movement now?
This isn’t the University of Memphis Basketball team when John Calipari was coach. The NCAA is not going to invalidate 30 games and a final four run. We got this douche, now let’s defeat his policies.

3. Is Orly Tait the best spokesperson you can find for your *ahem* cause?

You sir/ma’am are the one who fails. You fail the conservative movement, you fail your intellect, and ultimately you fail America because people like you discredit the rest of us who want to get this guy the hell outta here starting with his policies in 2010, and his job in 2012.

alohapundit on January 26, 2010 at 9:58 PM

True Machiavelli here: If you have problems at home, distract the people with crises abroad.

Details differ, but the tactic is the same.

Liam on January 26, 2010 at 9:58 PM

- Do you believe that Barack Obama is a U.S.citizen? Yes
- Do you think the Tenth Amendment bars Congress from issuing regulations like minimum healthcare coverage standards? Yes
- Do you think programs like Social Security and Medicare represent socialism, and should never have been created in the first place? Yes
- Do you think President Obama is a socialist? No. I think he’s a Marxist
- Do you think America should return to a gold standard? Haven’t decided yet.

I ain’t scared of these questions!

mizflame98 on January 26, 2010 at 9:58 PM

I don’t see how Social Security and Medicare can be called socialism. Socialism is taking from those who have to give to those who don’t. At least that’s what I see it as. Everyone who works pays into Medicare and Social Security to be used upon retirement. The system has been corrupted because the government hasn’t used the funds correctly but those who pay in are supposed to get it back. That really isn’t socialism, even if it is mismanaged.

Rose on January 26, 2010 at 9:46 PM

SS and Medicare force people into a government service – a service which the federal government is not even empowered to offer. People are forced to participate in these programs which offer terrible returns, as compared to private pension funds and such, and the receipts to these programs are never invested but used for ongoing, unrelated government operations.

They are socialist policies because they force private investment into a government vehicle.

neurosculptor on January 26, 2010 at 9:59 PM

Interesting stuff on Obama and socialism . One quote attributed to our President:

“there is no limit to taxation if the benefits derived from public services by society measure up to the cost in taxation which they have to pay” “Theoretically, there is nothing that can stop the government from taxing 100% of income so long as the people get benefits from the government commensurate with their income which is taxed.”

CWforFreedom on January 26, 2010 at 10:00 PM

What nonsense. This is their big strategy? There are any number of answers one could give on these and you could easily turn them around on the questioner. For example Medicare and SS are headed for fiscal collapse, do the Libs really want to talk about that?

echosyst on January 26, 2010 at 10:00 PM

Wait, so let me get this straight, Democrats are going to actually bring up socialism in debates with Republicans? They think this is a winning strategy? They are going to get slaughtered.

t.ferg on January 26, 2010 at 10:02 PM

Meanwhile the tea party people are going to make the election about first principles and the Democrats lunacy as displayed in their uncontrolled spending and policies.

I note a large majority of Americans cheered when the Democrats lost their super majority.

tarpon on January 26, 2010 at 10:02 PM

They are socialist policies because they force private investment into a government vehicle.

neurosculptor on January 26, 2010 at 9:59 PM

The problem is ,as the dems know. these programs are so entrenched that people cannot see themselves without them. The left continually uses them as a club to push more and more socialism. They believe that Americans are fine with some socialism and in general they are correct. This is exactly why such programs need defeated because they only beget more and more of the same.

CWforFreedom on January 26, 2010 at 10:03 PM

The system has been corrupted because the government hasn’t used the funds correctly but those who pay in are supposed to get it back. That really isn’t socialism, even if it is mismanaged.

They are entirely classic, European Socialist concepts.

-Are you given a choice to pay into SS/Medicare? No. It is taken from you by law and handed over to the gov’t for their own devices.

-Management of these programs is irrelevant to the question. Would gov’t nationalized health insurance be any less socialist if it were managed extremely well? No. It’s still classical socialist dogma…taking unequally from all to redistribute equally to all.

However this does lead to the primary, core problem that people have with the idea of American government-run health insurance. Not necessarily that it’s socialism because that’s been established to some degree in this country. Not that tax increase will occur. No. It’s the track record of the U.S. Federal Government to administer and manage ANY entitlement program efficiently and without budgetary shennanigans. It has NEVER demonstrated an ability to do this responsibly and without the whims of the party in charge to manipulate them to their own purposes. Ever.

Maybe in Canada or Australia with entirely different political landscapes and structures, okay, sort of. But here? It’s never happened and Americans are being asked to hand over the livlihood of their most precious and personal posession…..their own health……to the hands of some the most inefficient, incompetent, and un-accountable drones the modern world has ever known.

Are they socialism? Yes. Can Americans stomach that? Yes, to a degree. Can the American public stomach ever more poorly run and expensive government? NO!

My money says that the original birth certificate declares a non-hospital birth, along with an affidavit from the mother and grandmother.

That’s how a lot of Hawaiian births were recorded in 1961 – they allowed you to swear that the child was born in America.

Hence Obama’s confusion and susbsequent corrections as to which hospital he was born in.

It doesn’t so much bother me whether he was born in America though – it’s that he was raised outside America and absorbed a foreign culture, instead on American culture.

That’s why his instincts are 180-degrees wrong on just about everything. He doesn’t think like Americans who were raised in AMerica. And that’s why he is such a poor leader – he doesn’t understand us.
