Obama: I’d rather be a really awesome one-term president than a mediocre two-termer
posted at 7:26 pm on January 25, 2010 by Allahpundit
An irresistible soundbite from today’s sitdown with Sawyer. Keep doing what you’re doing, champ. You’re right on track.
He’s right, though, about how stupid the shifting narratives are concerning his Spock-like demeanor. Remember when people were panting during the campaign about The One’s famously unflappable “first-rate temperament”? Fast-forward a year and the lefty punditocracy’s begging him to turn into an angry, screeching anti-bank faux-populist demagogue. And if he does, rest assured that the media will cheer him on for being the liberal pretend-firebrand they’ve always dreamed of. More from Mark McKinnon about how easily led they are and why adding David Plouffe to the team will instantly help Obama even if it doesn’t make a lick of substantive difference:
Washington and the media are obsessed by process and personnel stories. They always confer ridiculously exalted status on consultants, rewarding them with outsize responsibility when they win and disproportionate blame when they lose.
And Washington wants a pound of flesh. The media feeds on conflict. They want an admission from the president that things are not going well. And they always read a personnel change as a white flag. And it doesn’t matter that in this case nobody was thrown under the bus. As Axelrod told ABC News: “I think that the reaction to it has been overblown, but I know that Washington loves the shakeup story. Washington loves the ‘When are we going to throw a body out?’ story. That’s not how we roll.”
But it is how Washington rolls. And at the end of the day, that reaction will help Axelrod and company. Even if Team Obama didn’t do a thing differently because of Plouffe’s presence, the press is going to reset the story. Good things—that would have happened anyway, but would have been otherwise ignored—will now be attributed to and written about as the Plouffe factor.
Bingo. Give them a good narrative arc — slumbering president revives to slay the Wall Street dragon! David Plouffe a deus ex machina to hold off the GOP onslaught! — and they’ll play along. Predictable as ever. Click the image to watch.

The last really good one-term President was William Henry Harrison.
Seriously, it depends on what your measure is. Obama’s litmus test is just how much of his radical socialist ideology can be rammed through before he’s shut down. If not him, the next dictator will silence the peasants and move socialism further while Lafayette Square is bulldozed to erect the crypt for Obama’s remains so the faithful have a place to admire America’s very own Che, Mao, or Ho Chi Mihn.

Does he believe he has to sustain his B+ average to be a really awesome one-termer? Or will a B+, in his mind, mean he has become mediocre given that the man’s transcripts clearly show he’s always been a straight A student . . .

This view won’t be popular here, but…
I think Obama is gonna be a mediocre two-termer.
Which is not really all that bad, as long as we retake Congress and continue dragging the GOP, kicking and screaming, towards a responsible governing philosophy, fit to lead in 2016. In the meantime, Obama with a Republican Congress will be unpleasant but liveable.

Just watched the clip and I am going to throw the B.S. flag on two counts:
1. That feigned laugh when she asks “Maybe one term is enough?” Never in a million freakin’ years did Obama expect to be asked that after one year in office. He laughs, but he is outraged . . .
2.I read . . . “he ducked when Sawyer asked if he could guarantee there would not be a tax increase for anyone making less than $250,000.
‘I can guarantee that the worst thing we could do would be to raise taxes when the economy is still this weak,’ he replied.” B.S. Translation–as soon as we can come up with even a flimsy sign of recovery, prepare for a tax increase.

If Obama had introduced himself to the American public as “the liberal pretend-firebrand”, the Democratic moderate swing voters would have immediately thought they were seeing a repeat of Jesse Jackson circa 1984 or Al Sharpton circa 2004 and gone pouring over to Hillary. And the same thing would have happened if he had done it between the ’08 primaries and the general election.
Obama sold himself to the moderates pretty much for the reasons Harry Reid got raked over the coals for two weeks ago — the swing voters loved the idea of electing the first African-American president, but he had to be a seemling moderate, laid-back and post-racial African-American president. That’s why the Henry Louis Gates kerfuffle coming in the middle of the health care debate and the Town Hall meetings last summer was so toxic for Team Obama; they added to the impression among those swing voters that Obama wasn’t what he said he was when he made the sale during the previous fall’s campaign.
To now have Obama come out as the angry liberal populist firebrand (even if he still refuses to go after any of the Blue Dogs in his party’s own delegation — odds are he still doesn’t have the stomach to take on anyone but conservative Republicans) would be poison to those same moderate voters, because it would reinforce what they’ve come to believe about Obama over the last six months; that he sees America and has a vision of America’s future that’s both different from theirs and nothing like what they wanted when they voted for him.
jon1979 on January 25, 2010 at 8:25 PM

I think that was affirmed when he was giving shout outs and making jokes for five minutes before getting around to making any statement about the Ft. Pure NPD- if it doesn’t effect him, he doesn’t care.

This is REALLY good news. Unlike Clinton, this guy is clueless as to his leadership (or lack thereof) capabilities and is too arrogant to shift to the center. In just one year, he has lost his party a Massachusetts Senate seat-roughly equivalent (in shock value) to the College of Cardinals in Vatican City electing a Muslim Pope. What eggs will he have laid after two years? Probably so many that a Hillary challenge to his nomination is not beyond the realm of possibility.
