NFL championship games open thread
posted at 10:00 am on January 24, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
We’re getting close to the big game, and three of the four top seeds have made it into the conference championships. Last week I went 3-1 in the divisional playoffs by picking the favorites, getting surprised only by the New York Jets beating the second-seeded San Diego Chargers. That makes me 5-3 in the postseason and 66-38 for the entire season. Too bad I’m not actually a betting man …
But today’s a fresh day, especially in New Orleans and Indianapolis, where the penultimate battles of the NFL season will take place:
- New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts – I picked the Jets in the opening round and they beat Cincinnati, and picked against them in San Diego. Their defense played well last week, but if Nate Kaeding had made two of the three field goals he missed, we’d be deciding whether Philip Rivers or Peyton Manning will go to the Super Bowl. I hate to pick against the Cinderella team of the season, but the Colts will be too much for Mark Sanchez and his plucky Broadway boys. Manning beat the Ravens defense last week, and he’ll be looking for revenge for the earlier loss to the Jets when Indy sat its starters. Colts over the Jets, 27-17.
- Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints – This is a tough game to pick. It depends which team on both sides shows up. Assuming both teams bring their A-games, I have to go with defense — and the Vikes have a better defense than New Orleans, even on the road. They strangled a Dallas offense that had been red-hot before coming up north. The Saints have a serviceable defense, but so did Dallas, and they got scorched by Brett Favre. Vikings over the Saints, 33-21.

Blowback

And, as noted above, New Orleans almost lost the Saints following Katrina. The Saints have been career losers, so you have to realize what this means for New Orleans to finally have a champion in town.
Good Solid B-Plus on January 24, 2010 at 10:45 PM
This win had nothing to do with Katrina or Boooosh. It was a game played well by both sides.
I, for one, was glad to watch it.
Just hope the Big Game will be this much fun.
TXUS on January 24, 2010 at 10:45 PM
I don’t think those calls were bad. The refs were extremely cautious in the overtime, annoyingly so.
Like conservnut said—the turnovers lost the game for the Vikings.
conservative pilgrim on January 24, 2010 at 10:46 PM
Sorry, misread your post. Thought you were being a Viking whiner. Too much Jack Daniels tonight.
conservnut on January 24, 2010 at 10:46 PM
I’ll be sure to tell everyone who thought it was one of the most poignant moments in sports history that you thought it was stupid.
Good Solid B-Plus on January 24, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Congrats to Saints fans. I still remember like it was five minutes ago when my 49ers won their first NFC Championship with The Catch. I sang parts of two songs: The part of “Like a Rolling Stone” in which Dylan sings “How does it feel?” since the Niners exorcised a devastating last-minute playoff loss to Dallas in 1972, and this part of the chorus of Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight”: “I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord…”
L.N. Smithee on January 24, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Nope. Manning will pick the Saints defense apart.
Babino on January 24, 2010 at 10:47 PM
The good news Viking fans is that Farve will be back next year. No way he is ending his career on an int.
conservnut on January 24, 2010 at 10:49 PM
You do that.
/totally unconcerned
//mostly because nobody cares about my opinion of sports anyway :-)
Laura on January 24, 2010 at 10:49 PM
We shall see, we shall see.
I think Peyton is the best QB in the league, but I don’t at all think he is going to run away with this game. Even people out of the old folks home like Ed Reed can punk Peyton. Sharper might do the same.
Spirit of 1776 on January 24, 2010 at 10:50 PM
If the Saints kept NO together, why don’t we give a football franchise to Haiti, we can call them the Haitan Rafters or the Zombies.
Pelayo on January 24, 2010 at 10:50 PM
I stayed at a convent in New Orleans in ~2007 and the nuns there were the most die-hard Saints fans I had ever met.
They went on and on how the Saints starting to win exerted a tremendous positive influence on a city that had been beat to its knees. They prayed before every game…
They still wished Bush would run straight instead of dancing…
darclon on January 24, 2010 at 10:51 PM
I was counting on it.
BigWyo on January 24, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Why not? It’s happened with the three other teams he left.
In fact, I think it’s fitting. He DOES have the career INT record, after all.
Good Solid B-Plus on January 24, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Bets that Obama will make an appearance at the Superbowl?
journeyintothewhirlwind on January 24, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Agree. Manning can handle the pressure too, which I think will be too much for Brees and the Saints crew.
conservative pilgrim on January 24, 2010 at 10:51 PM
Striped shirts with the phantom PI call determined this game. No ten yard penalty, loss of down means no third down to Meachem across middle of the field.
Granted it should have never gone into overtime because Favre didn’t run it. Even with his lack of speed he could have at least gotten to the thirty, with enough room to do a headfirst slide for show, Longwell hits the kick and they continue their reunion tour, Longwell’s the bassist. Instead he throws across his body, I don’t even remember the interception, because the second I saw the throw I sighed, and lost interest until the Dback hit midfield.
LevStrauss on January 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM
As a lifelong Cowboy fan, I take offense to your reference to that travesty of a play! I still have nightmares about it!
conservnut on January 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM
You morons were saying Favre would pick the Saints’ defense apart, and the Saints’ defense is the only reason they won.
Haters galore.
TTheoLogan on January 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM
How did the Saints Win the Game?
75% Vikings turnovers
20% Horrible Refs Giving the Saints 1st Downs
5% Tackling Favre hours after he tossed the ball
So the only part the Saints played in winning was unbelievable cheating. Normally all those tackles wouldn’t be a big deal, even if it is bad sportsmanship. But I guarantee Favre would have run the ball instead of throwing an interception if he hadn’t been hobbled by a late tackle. Thus putting them in field goal range and probably winning the game.
chicagojedi on January 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM
The ChoKings and “Brent” Favre sold their souls and got NOTHING in return. Zero, zilch, nada! Bwahahahahahaha!
packsoldier on January 24, 2010 at 10:52 PM
That made me laugh out loud; and now I feel bad.
Because the team wins that game if they don’t turn the ball over. He won’t leave a winning team like that on the table. It’s not like they are x numbers of pieces away – they can run the exact same team out there next year and they have a real shot at the SuperBowl. Again. He’ll be back.
Spirit of 1776 on January 24, 2010 at 10:53 PM
I think they were mostly Viking errors that helped.
El_Terrible on January 24, 2010 at 10:54 PM
At the very least an infomercial.
conservative pilgrim on January 24, 2010 at 10:55 PM
I’m pretty sure the touchdown given to the Saints 2 feet from the goal line made a difference.
xblade on January 24, 2010 at 10:55 PM
Hmmmm. I think you might be a TAD biased in your analysis.
Babino on January 24, 2010 at 10:55 PM
You know what else is bad sportsmanship: being a sore loser.
darclon on January 24, 2010 at 10:56 PM
He showed today that he is getting old. I know the Saints got to him a lot, but the guy should go out on a high point (that he made it to the NFC championship) rather than wither away while his age shows.
And I LOVE Farve, followed him many, many years. I just think he should try for coaching than try to become the geritol quarterback.
lsutiger on January 24, 2010 at 10:58 PM
He’ll be there!
He probably thinks the reasons they even play the game is to get to win a trip to WH to meet him. “Let me clear, the winner will be invited to the White House and will be given free Che t-shirts.”
Spirit of 1776 on January 24, 2010 at 10:58 PM
Actually they got further than the packs, and close to going to the superbowl. Not much in the scheme of things, but more than what 28 other teams can say. (including the packers)
Chubbs65 on January 24, 2010 at 10:59 PM
I have two reasons that I want the Colts to win the Super Bowl.
One-I truly believe that Manning is the better QB and is playing on the better team.
Two-I do not want to see Katrina flashbacks for the next month.
Babino on January 24, 2010 at 10:59 PM
Darcion -
How exactly am I a sore loser when I’m a Bears fan who complained that both teams don’t deserve to go to the Super Bowl. The truth is you’re biased. You wanted the Saints to win and you don’t care that they cheated to do so. I suspect much like how you were glad Obama won even though he needed ACORN voter fraud to win. By any means necessary right?
chicagojedi on January 24, 2010 at 10:59 PM

El_Terrible on January 24, 2010 at 11:00 PM
Sure. The Vikings had over 460 yards offense while the Saints had about 250. The Saints are going to be crushed by the Colts.
pearson on January 24, 2010 at 11:01 PM
That was the single worst Favre throw I have seen since he threw the punt to Dawkins in the “4th and 26″ game. The People’s Champion makes the catch, flashes the belt and the the game ties. Favre throw the punt during overtime and loses.
LevStrauss on January 24, 2010 at 11:01 PM
But Favre’s typical boneheaded interception is why so many Packer fans were not that sorry to say adios. Being a gunslinger is all well and good for one game, but when you’re in the playoffs and have to win three (or 4) consecutive games against tough competition, the odds will catch up with you before you win it all.
Trust me, when Favre threw that pick, Packer fans all said, “Yup that’s Brett …”
PackerBronco on January 24, 2010 at 11:03 PM
I kind of doubt that. I think his PR guys might think it embarrassing to have to run TOTUS out in front of the nation so say “Heads or Tails”
Spirit of 1776 on January 24, 2010 at 11:03 PM

Favre happens.
Better luck next year Viking fans.
TheBigOldDog on January 24, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Well Saints jerseys have some resemblance to Steelers jerseys. I guess the refs got confused and figured they had to influence this too.
LevStrauss on January 24, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Sure, but let’s be honest – without Favre, the Vikings would not have been in the playoffs in the first place. And can you think of any other 40-year-old QB who has been so good?

dumb throw. He should of run it, but maybe with his ankle it wasn’t really an option. Favre screwed up on a big play, but the vikes had many failed actors in this horrible play tonight. Stonehanded wrs, buttery handed rbs, and a coach with too many players in a huddle AFTER a timeout. The refs were questionable too. I’m not a vikes fan, but I wouldn’t pin it all on Favre this year.
All the vike’s offense should be kissing their defenses’ butt for making it a close game.

I’m glad that someone from N.O. feels that way, because I do too. I remember being disgusted that thousands of people without homes apparently spent federal recovery money on NFL tickets.
But it’s not just New Orleans — there were people who implied you were un-American if you rooted against the Yankees in the 2001 World Series (as I did). And that stuff about Olympic athletes being the source of national catharsis still endures when it’s a real stretch. In a promo for NBC’s coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, speedskater Apolo Ohno says something about how America needs the Olympics more than ever. Scuse me? I don’t give a rat’s about speedskating except for one week every four years, and if Ohno wins, it doesn’t do a thing for me. He puts a couple of medallions around his neck, and that’s going to help someone get a job? He’s almost as bad as James Cameron trying to start a self-cheer for the showbiz biggies at the Golden Globes — it seemed most people were smart enough not to join in with, y’know, Haiti and everything.

As a lifelong Niner fan, I can understand your nightmares. It was truly a day in football history when our demons were exorcised. Kinda like the Saints and their fans tonight. Nothing will ever be the same for a true Saints fan from here on out. (unless they go on and win the big one)
Rovin on January 24, 2010 at 11:22 PM
Favre had a great year but he ended the year as he usually does – with a stupid interception at crunch time. When Favre’s legacy is examined, along with all of the records and iron man toughness, his playoff screwups (which are legendary) will be part of it.
So this year, Favre added to his lore – both the good and the bad of it.

XWing5 on January 24, 2010 at 11:25 PM
Saints don’t have a chance. They almost lost to a team that turned the ball over 5 times…dude, that is horrible!!!
deidre on January 24, 2010 at 11:28 PM
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but didn’t “Yup” give Packers fans their first championship since the Bart Starr and Lombardi days? The old man played a hell of a game tonight considering he was beaten up by a bunch of kids and damn near pulled the game out. Few in the Hall will be in his company as one of the best players of all time—Yup, that’s Brett.
Rovin on January 24, 2010 at 11:33 PM
Would have been a great Super Bowl matchup either way, but it’s always nice to see a new face in the big game.
RightOFLeft on January 24, 2010 at 11:38 PM
Will Favre end his career on an INT? Stay tuned, for the next 6 to 7 months! Take 3!
stldave on January 24, 2010 at 11:38 PM
I agree with all of that, but with all of that is also the legacy of epic playoff chokes. The OT interception to the Eagles. The OT interception to the Giants. The interception in this game that prevented a game-winning field goal. Six interceptions against the Rams and that’s just a partial list.
Packer fans, and I think I can speak for them, loved Brett Favre but we also learned the hard way not to trust him too much.
PackerBronco on January 24, 2010 at 11:38 PM
Hate to make VIKINGS FANS mad but come on you can’t commit 5 tunovers and expect to win the game. The VIKINGS were outplaying the SAINTS as far as moving the ball but too many turnovers and some in the redzone. Can’t win like that. As a resident HOOSIER I say GO COLTS!
PTN 39 on January 24, 2010 at 11:40 PM
Seriously?
That mystifies me, because when the Niners won the Super Bowl for the first time, I lost the bitterness of all the losses I’d witnessed. You got to see the Cowboys win the Lombardi trophy since 1982 — why does the one that got away still hurt so much?
The most anyone can ask of their favorite team is for them to win a championship in your lifetime. I would like to see the 49ers win another Bowl, but I’m realistic — I’ve watched them win five. I saw the Golden State Warriors win in 1975. I’m still waiting on my Giants, whose championship drought is only exceeded by those of the Cubs and the Indians.
L.N. Smithee on January 24, 2010 at 11:45 PM
Hey PB, that SOB threw a hail mary earlier this year with no time left on the clock to beat my Niners. I can hate him and still recognize he’s one of the best that ever played the game. Fran Tarkenton was another that was one of the best, yet never won the big one. Farve passed “my quarterback” Montana tonight with the most completions in a playoff game, (something around 500), and his INT’s will be noted. I actually hope he retires because he’s just about done all that he could at this time and at his age.

Rovin, everything you say is right. Favre had an amazing season — who knew he could play 16 games with only 7 picks? Had he stayed in NY he might have been on another super bowl track. Of course his path was to do a blubbering retirement 2 years ago, suggest a retraction to the Packers, then disavow the retraction, then when pre-season starts he wants in again. He tries to spill team trade secrets to Packer rival Detroit, he gets traded to NY, he craters in December after playing great, and after the season he claims to retire again and gets released from his contract. Of course this retirement was disingenuous and his machiavellian quest led to a dream regular season with the Vikings, his former team’s arch-rival. How fitting it was for the Vikes to (again) taste the unbearable agony of avoidable defeat.
Mark30339 on January 25, 2010 at 12:02 AM
The Giants will not win a World Series until they give up their ridiculous territorial claim to the South Bay, and finally allow the A’s to move to San Jose where they belong. Karma, you know. =P
The Oakland Athletics…Four World titles. Six League Championships. Over fifteen playoff appearances. Zero “Splash Hits”. =)
And stole our winning season, no less. I’ve never cared for Favre. Yes, he owned the Niners repeatedly in the playoffs, but I’ll never forget 1999 and “The Catch II” that knocked the Packers out, and Favre’s subsequent whining to the press about how it was a bad call.
The sourpuss look on his face after every turnover, and especially after that 40-yarder that sliced the uprights in half and ended his season…priceless.

I haven’t been following football for too long, but I was willing to be convinced that Favre wasn’t the guy who threw all those interceptions I remember.
Then he threw all those interceptions. But I have to admit, he didn’t have a corner on turning over the ball, his teammates helped considerably.
Vikings totally outplayed New Orleans in every way, including winning the sportsmanship award for all the gifts they lavished on the Saints.
Danzo on January 25, 2010 at 3:45 AM
What a moron. Yeah, it’s not like the saints caused those turnovers.
TTheoLogan on January 25, 2010 at 4:41 AM
I didn’t realize you were a moron. The refs gave that 15 yard “out of bounds tackle” to the Vikings and they ended up getting a touchdown on it. Give me a break.
TTheoLogan on January 25, 2010 at 4:42 AM
Didn’t you hear that doofus Danzo? The Vikings gave the Saints those turnovers. Like, when the Saints punched the ball out of their hands, that didn’t really happen.
TTheoLogan on January 25, 2010 at 4:44 AM
When you have to exaggerate, your point is probably not that good.
They would have had 2 more downs to score on inches. The vikings were given another set of downs and 15 yards by that nonsense “out of bounds push” penalty.
TTheoLogan on January 25, 2010 at 4:45 AM
You people seriously are heartless idiots. Katrina cost 1,800 lives in the New Orleans area. They almost lost the saints as a team. The super dome was ruined. If you had any clue and had been in the area, you’d know the affects are still felt far and wide, people permanently displaced, etc.
Seriously, you guys are out and out idiots.
TTheoLogan on January 25, 2010 at 4:49 AM
I would invite all of you such as gophergirl, conservative pilgrim, and other dipsticks to come to New Orleans and tell the people there to “move on” and “get over it” in regards to Katrina. Considering 1,800 people in the area died in it, it displaced hundreds of thousands, and thousands lost their homes, etc. Every single person there knows someone harshly affected or dead because of the storm.
I’m sure they’d show you a token of their appreciation and would even recommend a nice to a proctologist afterward to help remove the jazz trombone from your rear that they shoved in there.

Bush in office = Saints don’t go to SB
Obama in office = Saints do go to SB
Conclusion: BOOSH is racist and hates black people in NO.
