Gallup tracking poll puts Obama approval and disapproval at 47%
posted at 2:00 pm on January 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Gallup has its first daily tracking poll on presidential job approval where all three days of polling falls after the Massachusetts special election that stripped Obama of his Senate supermajority. For the first time, Gallup has both approval and disapproval among adults at the same level, 47%. Furthermore, it appears that Obama lost significant ground among adults after the election, which led to the tie today (h/t Geoff A):
This approval rating is the lowest Gallup has yet recorded, and it wipes out a five-point advantage Obama had coming into the election that propelled Scott Brown to victory. Bear in mind that this does not include weekend polling, which usually favors Democrats, so expect a rebound in the Tuesday-Wednesday polling announcements.
Still, the general population of adults usually gives Democrats their best polling. Rasmussen’s tracking poll among likely voters shows Obama well under water, as it has for two months. Furthermore, the gap between strong approval and strong disapproval reached another record, and this time it’s not just Republicans and independents losing patience:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-three percent (43%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -19 (see trends).
These figures come from nightly telephone surveys and are reported on a three-day rolling average basis. Today’s update is the first based entirely upon interviews following Tuesday’s election in Massachusetts and the Approval Index has fallen eight points since Tuesday morning.
The number of Democrats who Strongly Approve has fallen from 55% on Tuesday morning to 48% today. The number of unaffiliated voters who Strongly Disapprove has increased from 43% on Tuesday to 51% today. It remains to be seen whether those changes are a temporary reaction in the wake of a stunning election upset or the beginning of a more lasting change.
If Obama has started to lose the passion of his base, he’s in deep trouble. That may have more to do with the failure to push for the public option in ObamaCare, but it also gives a big indication of potential voter ennui in the midterms. It’s no small wonder that Obama has brought David Plouffe back into the White House political machine to rescue his floundering presidency.

I don’t. I was a HUGE Hillary supporter, but every single interview I hear, she expresses the same sentiment. She’s not only not up for running again, she’s hanging on to complete this “tour of duty.”
I think she’s really hit a wall energy-wise. She’s entitled.

One can almost trace in hindsight the beginning of barry’s downfall. I say it began with a seemingly minor event: his knee jerk reaction to the Cambridge Police “acting stupidly.”
1. It was a local issue from which he should have refrained.
2. It was allegedly racial but later found not so.
3. He did not have all the facts but chimed in nonetheless.
Once the facts came to the fore barry was the Won who was seen to have acted stupidly.
barry’s knee jerk response was revivified to live in stark contrast along side his urging us all to “not jump to conclusions” about Fort Hood.
Of course in the continuum of screws ups its hard to claim one above all others as precipitating his descent.
This relatively minor happenstance has now come full circle for the MA police, without much hesitation, endorsed Brown.
Sweet Karma baby.

Ok predictions now. How many times will the ONE blame the Bush in his SOTU speech? My guess directly once and indirectly 5 times.
CWforFreedom on January 23, 2010 at 4:17 PM
It started before that. That pathetic attempt to fill the cabinet was when people realized (those who were too slow to already know it) that we had a retard in the Oval Office. The Cambridge “stupidly” incident brought this home to many (who hadn’t paid attention to the “when white embraces what’s right” idiocy from the inauguration or Holder’s inane babblings or the rest of the clear evidence that The Precedent was bringing third-world revenge to the strategy sessions of the White House in their planning against America) but the mistakes and gaffes and idiotic decisions have been the bread and butter of this administration. In fact, they have had nothing but mistakes, gaffes, and idiotic decisions.

It’s more fun to do the SOTU here at Hot Air. I don’t have to listen to him and you all can keep me entertained by your blow by blow account of this man-child. I have been sick of him since before the election. Actually since before the primaries.
This week has been the greatest week since—I don’t know when. We have been beat down since the inaguration when the fool actually got power. One thing I have learned is that nothing is forever in politics. It’s as changable as the weather. Who knew that Massachusetts would be the state that would change the world for us? Never in a million years did I ever see those patriots rising up. CT maybe, but MA? Wow! Just wow.

OneVision on January 23, 2010 at 4:31 PM
This could be right. I tend to think the same thing, but it depends on how aggressively he pursues his agenda by means outside the legislative branch. I don’t see the country trusting him with a powerful house and senate again, but I don’t necessarily think the man himself is doomed in 2012. He’ll get a lot of support rallied around him again, he can position himself as a centrist late 2011 through 2012 and the short attention span crowd will take it hook, line, and sinker. The GOP will really need to have their message honed with a great candidate sending it. Hope it’s easier than I think though.
I don’t think he cares about lost seats either. I think they all knew they were breaking dozens of eggs from around August to now. Their only miscalculation was that they might still have nothing to show for it.

I personally am not so sure that people were all that thrilled about being guilted into voting for him anyway.
The younger generation really, really guilted a lot of older voters, who saw him realistically. It was a “pity” vote in a lot of cases, which never stands the test of time. That explanation makes sense to me. It’s rather dysfunctional voting, which given that we were headed into a legitimate crash, means we’ve been dysfunctional for quite awhile.
I also can’t “picture” a strategist laying this reality out for any president.
It will be interesting to see if he arrives at a realistic assesment of his own presidency.
I don’t think the guy is stupid. I don’t think he’s a Marxist. I can’t write him out of my own “book of life” quite yet.
He’s behaving like an idiot, but I’ve seen lots of politicians do just the same and then turn around and get centered.
I personally hope he does, not because I wish that either the GOP or the DEM parties get ahead. I hope he does for us.
We seriously needed to elect a real leader. I think we “charged” one last time.
Now, it’s time to pay the bill.
AnninCA on January 23, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Yup, and that’s where he’s not Clinton. He doesn’t get this. Why would he, really? He doesn’t have real political experience.
Politicians don’t survive by saying the perfect thing at the perfect time. They survive by their actual accomplishments.
What works.
AnninCA on January 23, 2010 at 4:50 PM
I think the political calculation was that the Dems could launch a rapid strike on the healthcare system before the Congressional August recess followed by 15 months to “fix” whatever rancor they generated. Unfortunately, while they thought this effort would be akin to Doolittle’s raid over Tokyo, they ended up with the trench warfare of World War I. The long slog ended on 1/19 with the loss of a filibuster-proof Senate. In the dark places that Dems don’t talk about, they are relieved that they don’t have to continue the journey they began last July as a six-week campaign.
highhopes on January 23, 2010 at 4:51 PM
Too easy. We should continue with the drinking game but only take shots when we hear a sentence that can’t fit on a bumper sticker. The filthy lying coward in the White House (the peoples’ house despite Obama’s claims) is incapable of giving a real speech.

You are correct in one respect. Hillary is a grifter. A lifestyle that requires a far better understanding of people than Obama’s upbringing as the affirmative action choice.
You are wrong about her judgement. I don’t know if it was promises of Obama paying off her campaign debt, her belief that becoming SECSTATE would set her up to become POTUS some day, or whatever reason but….she was a fool to sign on to this administration. Since foreign policy is done within the West Wing and annonced by the court jester (Robert Gibbs), Hillary has essentially disappeared from the public stage. Its best to err on the side of caution and assume HRC to be a potential danger. That would be to go against the ideology of her own people. But when the political wind changes and it becomes fashionable she might join the fray and go negative on barry to seize opportunity.

I disagree. The problem with Shrillary in the campaign was quite simple – she really f#cked it all up when she supported drivers licenses for illegals. That is what killed her candidacy. And that was the last word about illegals anyone heard through the campaign or the general.
After that, however, Shrillary has proven herself inept and incompetent and cannot be a serious threat to anyone. She turned herself into a total joke in the public sphere.
The best PR Shrillary ever got was in the movie “Primary Colors” where she came across as intelligent and clever and competent. Her performance in public positions, however, has dispelled that notion quite convincingly. She’s only lucky that The Precedent is around. He’s so stupid and incompetent that anyone looks normal and decent by comparison, at the very worst.
No, Shrillary has no chance, but it’s not because of her age. It’s because of her.

As if! My prediction is that she will go from being on the board of Wal-Mart to being a greeter at a Wal-Mart!
No not really but I can dream. The fact of the matter is that Hillary Clinton was duped. Secretary of State is supposed to be a lofty position held only by serious seasoned statesmen whose career enables them to provide sound advice to the President. Hillary Clinton is an asterisk in that line-up.
Keep in mind that before Obama, Colin Powell’s credentials were questioned and he was a four star general who was the top military commander (a political job) in the most powerful nation on earth. Hillary Clinton was a first lady turned Senator. Other than receiving roses by adoring crowds abroad (even if under threat of mythical snipers) she has no foreign policy experience.
Her time as SECSTATE has been an embarassment. The “reset button” gaffe s just one example. But, more significantly the State Department has essentially disappeared as a branch of the government under Obama.

You are probably right, he is not stupid, but that does not mean he is competent. Take School district administrators. I have taught for almost 30 years in several districts and rubbed elbows as a union negotiator with them. They all usually have PHD’s and Master degrees. No one can argue they are not smart. They have the lamb skin to prove it, yet they can make a janitor look like a genius with what they know about teaching children in the classrooms of their district. I saw the light on my community organizing many years ago I have lost count of the number of times I had to kill their brain farts before they did damage, and when I failed it hurt the teachers and the students.
Obama has had a good education; we think anyway. We know he got a bachelors degree and it seems that he barely got that, and we know he went to Harvard and somehow he managed to get to the top of his class, but we nothing of his grades or what he took. We know he was president of the Harvard Law Review, but unlike those before him who wrote tons of opinion and reviews, he wrote one memo. We know he taught Constitutional law, but he seems to know almost nothing about it. We know that his professorship required that he publish often, yet he published nothing and yet he was given tenure. We know that he was hired by two law firms but did not stay with either for very long. He wrote two books but did he write the second one or did a devout socialist, Bill Ayers, write the second one. He has told us as much that he did. As with school administrators with their degrees and often demonstrated yet incompetency, he may be smart, but not capable of being competent. His actions speak for him in that regard.
As for being a Marxist, how could he not be? You could say it is not even his fault that he is as he is; that he sees the world through eyes that are not his.
His mother was a radical, raised by parents that were far left socialist if not by a fine line; communist. Obama’s father walked out of his life the moment his feet hit the tarmac when he landed in Hawaii. He had a year or two as a normal child, free to be himself but that did not last. His mother married a Muslim who probably was a good father to him, but he did insist that his stepson be raised as Muslim and with that his life was guided by religion. For whatever reason, perhaps because the grandparents saw hope in making him the one hope that could lead America to be what they dreamed it would one day be, they took him to raise while his sister continued to live with their mother and her father. Obama could hardly escape the guiding of his young mind in socialist principals. At the age of nine, he was given a mentor, Frank Davis, a Moscow appointed communist leader of the Communist Party USA. Frank Davis implanted his ideas and perceptions into Obama into his late teens. He has spent his life afterwards surrounded by socialist and communist. It is no surprise at how many of his advisors and Czars follow him in his beliefs.
If there are still doubts about where his beliefs lie, compare his campaign platform to the Communist Party USA platform. They are almost identical. Compare them both to his polices and goals of his presidency. If you really want to know what he is doing, find a copy of the 1997 communist parties USA platform and goals. It is scary at how close they are to achieving those goals.
We did not give Obama his presidency. It was given to him to do one thing, get a nationalized healthcare law in place. Once that is done, the socialist can reach and control every aspect of Americans lives. Once he has done that, what he does afterwards is not important.

Can I say that I object to the use of “Shrillary?” It’s difficult enough for women in politics, and every time any type of sexist insult is directed at St. Sarah, people here go ballistic. Fair is fair.
I firmly believe there will never be a female POTUS in my lifetime, and I think that’s unfortunate. Hillary made a lot of misjudgments in her campaign, but let’s remember she was beating the pants off Barry in those final primaries. The Democratic powers-that-be decided early on that they wanted The One–untested, vapid, “all faculty lounge,” but SO brilliant, and what a temperament! I’ve yet to see any evidence that the guy possesses an even average intellect, and it turns out that he isn’t even that great a politician. Or speechifier. It’s been my experience that even people who don’t like Hillary will begrudgingly acknowledge that she is smart. I bet she knows there are 50 states!
Besides, she did pronounce Barry an “a$$hole,” so she at least deserves credit for being perceptive.

In Ghostbusters, if the streams crossed, something bad happens, well the chart shows the streams….they’re touching….!

As Chester C. Reilly used to say,
“What a revolting development THIS is!!
Seriously though, if any employee in America had these kinds of numbers from their employers regarding job performance, they’d be out on their arse by now.
Keep the change Mr. O’strawman!

My stomach can only take O’Chavez for milliseconds, but one thing I look forward to is the rousing standing ovation Scott Brown will receive during the SOTU when SubZero acknowledges Brown’s election victory.
Now THAT will be PRICELESS!!!

How low can we go, folks? When does the “I’m giving him a chance” thing run out? I think we’re very close. I predict approvals in the 30s in three months.

He he, now the poor slob just looks more stupid the more he talks.
He is his own worst enemy. The only thing he can do now is just shut the f up.
And the same goes for congress the more success they have the less likely they’ll get reelected.
