Video: Stewart slams Olby
posted at 10:12 am on January 22, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I saw mentions on Twitter that Jon Stewart went after Keith Olbermann in last night’s Daily Show, and wondered just how hard Stewart would hit him over his hysterical, over-the-top tirades this week. Answer: no haymakers, but plenty of hard jabs. The best part for Hot Air readers comes at the end, when Stewart comes closest to a knockout by pointing out the MS-NBC “news” host’s hypocrisy for calling Brown sexist and supportive of violence against women for a comment someone yelled out at a rally after Olbermann’s super-special Special Comment about Michelle Malkin:
| The Daily Show With Jon Stewart | Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c | |||
| Special Comment – Keith Olbermann’s Name-Calling | ||||
|
||||
Give credit to Stewart for getting laughs out of some very unfunny source material. I’m wondering why Stewart missed the opportunity to go after Olby’s assertion (with agreement from Newsweek editor Howard Fineman) that trucks represent racism, which could have made for some blockbuster comedy. But do notice where his audience laughs and applauds, because even though Stewart got a good response from them for himself, it becomes rather obvious where their sympathies lie — except when Stewart quotes Olby on Michelle, which gets a very gratifying gasp.

Blowback

He’s discovering there’s a bigger audience than college Liberals.

I saw this video. Funny on Jon’s part, but absolutely depraved on the part of Kayo. His comments were utterly disgusting and irresponsible. He is like hard core political porn of the worst variety. There is no explaining it nor giving it a comedic twist—it should simply be avoided altogether–and I think most of America already is doing that.

Stewart slams Olby should read:
“Stewart’s admiration for Olberman temporarity dented. Dent removal team shows up before show is over.”
uknowmorethanme on January 22, 2010 at 10:16 AM
I will give Stewart credit for being the only “news anchor” who will consistently report the hypocrisy of this administration. It is kind of sad when the best reporter in America is a comedian.

I was OK with this clip until the part where Stewart says Olbermann’s too good for this.

Just scrolled the Kos, I swear I could hear posts flying about Stewart Must Be Fired about 10:20 Central last night. Was sort of surprised to find none of that. In fact, several even talked about how over the top Oober has become.
JamesLee on January 22, 2010 at 10:17 AM
When Leno mentioned Scott Brown’s win during his monologue last night, there were loud cheers & applause, followed by slightly less loud boos. Now Leno’s audience is primarily tourists I believe, so hard to tell if it is representative of a 50-50 split in the country.
rbj on January 22, 2010 at 10:17 AM
Nah, the college Liberals love to complain about anyone with a higher status than them, but they need someone like Stewart to let them know that a target is fair game. Stewart just designated Olby “The Man” for them.

I’m surprised there were any cheers considering the demographics of Leno’s audience.
uknowmorethanme on January 22, 2010 at 10:22 AM
John Stewart is a centrist. Kidding, but seriously he’d eventually have to go after his own. “Dick Cheney is cartoonishly evil” can only get so many laughs from liberal college douches for so long.
Shock the Monkey on January 22, 2010 at 10:22 AM
For the Kos types, talking other people down is more important than politics or ideology. Politics and ideology are just tools they use in disparaging others in the first place. I dare say Obama was only popular with them because of how viciously his candidacy allowed them to verbally attack his opponents.

I hope Comcast is paying attention to Olby and Chrissie. They are not assets. They are liabilities.

It is a teeny lover’s spat. It is a way to cover

It only requires a constant spewing of

the same stuff…a cover

Where are the Obama Bank Regulation and Debt ceiling posts from HA this morning? Seems like fluffy stuff so far.
WashJeff on January 22, 2010 at 10:25 AM
O’Reilly had a montage of the left’s meltdown on his show last night. Surprisingly, I don’t think Uberwoman was included though.
If they’re acting this crazy after the Brown victory, can you imagine how unhinged they’ll be in November? And I don’t wanna imagine what the coverage will be like in 2012 should a Republican win the Presidency(especially if it’s Palin).
Doughboy on January 22, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Soon Olby will name his mother as ‘Worst Person’ because she (obviously) dropped him on his head when he was a baby.
GnuBreed on January 22, 2010 at 10:26 AM
Olbermann is a mashed up bag of nakedly-partisan offal posing as a sportcaster cum political commentator.
The tripe is ripe.
profitsbeard on January 22, 2010 at 10:27 AM
I know people who get their ‘news’ from Stewart, and may have never heard of Olbie. Now they have, and Olbie’s audience won’t increase for it by any appreciable amount. He may even lose a few.
I disagree with Stewart about Rush, and his saying Olbie is ‘better than that’ but otherwise it was fun. Not quite comedy gold but I can give him 14 carats for the skit.
Liam on January 22, 2010 at 10:27 AM
Stewart gently jabs Olberdouche for something that , in his libtard world, is considered hate speech of the most vicious kind. In the lefty universe verbal assaults like Olberdouche’s is worse then murder. Not impressed by Stewarts feeble attack.
DeweyWins on January 22, 2010 at 10:30 AM
Olberdork has replaced the National Enquirer as the talking version of Tabloid journalism. And the Neilson’s certainly support his popularity. How any potential advertiser could seriously consider buying time on the man’s program is a mystery unto itself. He isn’t even funny. Well….funny looking, yes.

Funny thing about college liberals. Right around this time in their senior year they begin to realize the rest of their lives will have virtually no resemblance of what their professors taught them it would be. They suddenly realize those midnight candle vigils for the Oppressed Du jour would have zero impact on their ability to gain a good job. However, a good nights’ sleep may have had an immediate impact on that mid-term the next day, which would have improved their long-term prospects.
In other words, the closer college liberals come to the graduation ceremony, the less liberal they become.
But not in all cases. Some are beyond help.

Bob's Kid on January 22, 2010 at 10:36 AM
To be fair those audiences for late night usually cheer anything when given the social cue by the host. I would more apt to think that the ones that boo’ed were the ones who actually thought about what they’re cheering/booing about. Not saying I agree with their sentiment, though I do, but just that in general those audiences are ready to cheer when a host seems to be giving a cue.
Norvell on January 22, 2010 at 10:37 AM
You’re right. It’s been said if you’re not liberal in your 20s you have no heart. But if you’re still liberal in your 30s you have no brain.

A padded cell awaits Olberdouche.

Must be hard for poor Jon. After all, here we have a tied int he wool Liberal with a capital “L” stuck with a Democrat House, Democrat Senate and Democrat President. How can he ridicule the Republicans if the Democrats are sitting in all the target seats?

Olbermann is more repulsive than dog puke on a hot sidewalk but he typifies that dirtbag network and the Party of the Democrats.

Not directly. At the beginning, he says Olby was logical and reasonable to blame Bush. Same diff, right?
UnderstandingisPower on January 22, 2010 at 10:47 AM
Ehh.. sorry – but “slams” is a touch over the line, and Stewart definitely does not “destroy” Olbermann as the original thread indicated.
I thought Stewart was funnier about a decade or so ago when no one really knew who he was. Don’t get me wrong, it was a generally humorous clip (his overwrought speaking parody was clever), and any jab at Olbermann is good cause these days, but it should have warranted a stronger, mouth on the floor, “oh, he did not just say that” kind of treatment.
Anyone with the earth-sized sanctimony that Olbermann has, predicated not on some kind of moral-religious bent, but instead on some kind of progressive journalistic “smarter than everyone else” sneer, deserves to be drubbed. And seriously.
somewhatconcerned on January 22, 2010 at 10:47 AM
Not only would a majority of Americans make for a bigger audience, but the Democrats provide a LOT more material.

I thikn Orelly was referring to him when he mentioned towards the end about there being more insults from hosts and then said…I wont mention who, but they know who they are.
becki51758 on January 22, 2010 at 10:51 AM
That was pretty darn good comedy right there. Stewart let the utter foolishness of Olbermann’s comments speak for themselves.
Even Chris Matthews would not stoop to any personal attacks on Scott Brown or his supporters this week. I think Keith’s days are numbered.
rockmom on January 22, 2010 at 10:54 AM
Three cheers and a round of drinks for Jon Stewart.
SC.Charlie on January 22, 2010 at 10:59 AM
His shtick is getting old. I think he was sending Olby a message that he is hurting the lib cause.
d1carter on January 22, 2010 at 10:59 AM
Maybe, but I’m betting that its just that Olby’s remarks just make him fair game, with laughs trumping ideology.
Count to 10 on January 22, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Isn’t it ironic that more people saw Olbermann’s rant on John Stewart’s show than watched it when it first aired.
Oldnuke on January 22, 2010 at 11:03 AM
Totally agree.
Branch Rickey on January 22, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Dave! How’s that global warming thing goin on up there? Is it true you froze in line waiting for a visit to your local clinic?
Rovin on January 22, 2010 at 11:06 AM
The first half was very funny, but Olberdouche’s rantings are hysterical all by themselves. Then, Stewart spends the last half of the bit talking about how intelligent Olberdouche is and begging for him to stop acting like a baby and return to the super-genius analyst that he is.
Overall, a solid B+.
neurosculptor on January 22, 2010 at 11:07 AM
He wouldn’t be poking fun at the left if they were able to successfully push their agenda. I agree that it was (for the most part) pretty funny, but it’s just angry words from a lover scorned and not a genuinely concerned viewer.
When the libbies get their second wind he’ll be back to blaming the red staters– better enjoy these truthful monologues while they last.
RachDubya on January 22, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Stewart is about as worse as Olbermann, so…..yeah.
Narutoboy on January 22, 2010 at 11:10 AM
I’m just hoping Stewart has a skit on Olbermann’s tirade last night on the SCOTUS decision. I swear, I was in tears (with laughter), by the time Olby finished. Newbusters has it up and my comment to the post was: “I’ll take Paranoid Schizophrenics for $600, Alex”
Rovin on January 22, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Comcast can’t let Olbermann and Maddow go on like this. Even the moonbats are turning on them. I look for major changes on MSNBC soon. I do not see how any sponsor would continue down this path.

It seems that Leno has become the last bastion of equal opportunity political humor. His humor doesn’t have the bitterness of the other punks and creepy old guys on late night, and he seems to poke fun at both sides. As a bit of an insomniac, I’ve seen them all, and Leno is the least offensive of late night hosts.
I jumped ship to Jay a few years back when Leno went over the top guano-crazy.

Stewart is still pro national health care. He however, does realize the strong ramifications of the Mass. election win by Brown. So if you can’t brow beat, demean, and bully people into buying what you’re selling…..do the opposite. Schmooze them…and that’s what I see here. Stewart is probably a fan of Keiths in most other instances.

Look Look A 50 year old man is making funny faces and wearing silly glasses while he mocks another man for being obscene and hateful. All the while complimenting him on his intellect and wit. Now that is some smart comedy.
Jon Stewart is insidious.
Sorax on January 22, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Probably? Probably?!?!
Rewatch the clip. The only reason Jon felt the need to say anything is because Olby’s comments were so crazy. And he didn’t want them to tarnish someone he admires. Rush is a jackass but Olby is a brilliant poet.
Yes. Jon Stewart is a fan of Keith Olbermanns and agrees with him 99% of the time.

My youngest watches these shows (Colbert) and has been drifting away from them because of the ridiculous worship of Pres. Obama. I would think if the jabs were more even handed it might increase audience.

While some of the Kos people are viciously hostile, others are simply blissfully unaware that everything they want has to come out of someone else’s pocket. For them good intentions is all the justification you need to take money away from people.
pedestrian on January 22, 2010 at 11:53 AM
I find this video as amusing as the rest of you, but don’t make any pretenses about Stewart being fair or any such nonsense. View this as constructive criticism. This is the bullhorn warning to any Democrat to step away from the edge.
DFCtomm on January 22, 2010 at 11:56 AM
Just seeing a picture of Olberman and a nauseous smell seems to takeover the room. How can a network be licensed to allow an obviously incompetent piece of human trash to have a platform where he removes all doubt of what and who he is? Any advertiser who is associated with this type of hate speech should be ostracized by the public.
volsense on January 22, 2010 at 12:03 PM
And only for now. That will change as soon as Olby tones it down just a tad or if he only reserves it for people like Rush or Bush.
I was glad to see this, but Stewart never said anything before and even during this segment refused to say that Olby’s rants were unacceptable before. Apparently, Keith used to give these rants to people who deserved them.
Considering that this isn’t even the first Daily Show clip to be posted here, specifically lampooning a Lefty, your comment is a bit absurd.
People have only said that the show is liberal. That Stewart sometimes makes fun of people on his side no more makes the show unbiased than it does when Glenn Beck goes after his own side.
Esthier on January 22, 2010 at 12:04 PM
Definitely. I used to watch the show myself in college, but I just couldn’t stand the bias. And that was before I was even all that involved politically.
I don’t mind being insulted so long as I know I’m not the only one. It’s what I love about South Park.
Esthier on January 22, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Listening to Stewert denounce Uberdouchebag reminds me of when CAIR denounces Terrorism… It’s all show. Having said that… I thought it was hilarious. The Stewert clip was pretty funny too.
ronnyraygun on January 22, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Olby obviously has decided that the only way he can get viewers is to be so over the top ludicrous that people tune in for the same reason they watch reality TV- to gape and stare at the train wreck.

Which is mostly fair, except that this is the first time Stewart’s gone after Keith and even here he complements the man.
Esthier on January 22, 2010 at 1:18 PM
Stew and Olby were traveling the same path when Bush was President. There were plenty of criticisms for entertainment fodder. What’s interesting is that Stew’s comedy sense is telling him it is time to start nailing Obama, while Olby is intent on shilling for the Dems in increasingly more ridiculous messages.
dedalus on January 22, 2010 at 1:26 PM
This shouldn’t be interesting. I kept hearing over and over when Bush was president that it’s the “job” of comics and anchors to attack the president.
That Stewart seems to actually get that, at least enough for five minutes out of an episode every once in awhile, doesn’t really prove much. He still shills for the Dems. He just understands the need to be more understated about it.
Esthier on January 22, 2010 at 1:31 PM
Captain, first disclosure. I don’t like Stewart. I don’t trust Stewart. I don’t watch Stewart.
He obviously heard of the odious Mr. Olbermann’s comments about MM, but waited until the election of Scott Brown to comment?
Why give him any credit for saying this now?
Angry Dumbo on January 22, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Three ways to make happy brothers of these two:
Just increase Olby’s meds. Decrease Jon’s joke inventory.
Add President Bush or a known Republican to the news cycle.
Oh, and keep their peach fuzz audience in the dark about the debt the Dems have charged or who really was steering and feeding the steam engine when the USS Subprime hit the iceberg.
