Video: GE/MSNBC political commentator pretty upset about political influence of corporations
posted at 7:22 pm on January 22, 2010 by Allahpundit
Irresistible as a follow-up to Stewart’s takedown, which I took to be a green light from one of the left’s arbiters of cool that it’s officially okay not to like this grandstanding bottom-feeder anymore. Hey, what’s wrong with punching a few holes in the First Amendment to stop Olby’s employers from directly influencing elections instead of funneling money to obnoxious goons like him? Matt Welch explains:
Citizens United, a conservative 501(c)(4) nonprofit that has funded a dozen political documentaries over the years, produced a critical documentary about Hillary Clinton in 2008 entitled “Hillary: The Movie.” By a decision of the federal government, which was enforcing the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (known more broadly as McCain-Feingold), this piece of political speech was banned from television.
Let’s boil it down to the essential words: Political documentary, banned, government.
You don’t have to be a First Amendment purist to intuit that political speech was, if anything, the most urgent subcategory covered by the First Amendment’s “Congress shall pass no law” restrictions. And you don’t have to be a Hillary-hater to imagine the shoe on the other foot. What if MoveOn.org’s 501(c)(4), Campaign to Defend America, had been blocked by George W. Bush’s Federal Elections Commission from broadcasting “McCain: The Movie”? Wouldn’t that stink, too?…
Even if you just can’t bring yourself to believe that people who take civil liberties seriously have long-held serious civil libertarian criticisms of campaign-finance laws, or if you simply think they’re all wrong, I’ll offer this last salve: It has never been easier for groups of citizens to swarm together and flow money through the Internet toward campaigns and candidates who excite them. Ask Ron Paul — or more relevantly, Barack Obama — what’s more powerful: $10 million from Dr. Evil Industries, or $10 each from 1 million people who can actually vote?
Taking the cue from Stewart, lefty Tommy Christopher lays into Olby for this latest bit of demagoguery, which included a charming comparison between First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams (who’s Jewish) to Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling. Don’t take it personally, Floyd: All of the modern-day Murrow’s enemies end up getting the Nazi treatment eventually. One question for Christopher, a self-described “longtime fan” of this idiot, though: When exactly was he was one of the “credible liberal voices” that America supposedly so sorely needs? Was it when he was saying crap like “Fox News is worse than Al Qaeda” — more than two years ago? Clue me in.

Honestly I don’t know why the Left is so pissed with this. They own GM, Chrysler, GMAC, and all unions. Obama’s got billions in “bailout” funds that he can give to any of those companies, which can then work their way into GM adds in particular congressional districts. No one would ever be able to prove that Obama was using the bailout money as a huge political slush fund, sending money into various markets where the Dem. candidate is facing an election “crisis.” In fact, this makes Obama the most sought after man in Democrat electoral politics, since it is the Executive branch that has total control of the money. In fact I’m wondering of Obama isn’t right now trying to convince Congressional Dems that he’s got their back financially for their elections, should the same kind of grassroots funding that helped Brown find its way into their race. Slush fund. Sluuuuush fund!

Does Olby not understand HE is a corporate toady??!! The only reason he is allowed to spew his vile trash at us is because Jeffrey Immelt wants to whore out MSNBC on behalf of Obama in order to curry favor and win crony capitalism deals for parent company GE, and fawning idiots like Olby and Tingle are the perfect front men for the whoring operation.

pilamaye on January 22, 2010 at 7:45 PM
Bingo. I thought Tommy’s criticism seemed a little silly given how thick he laid on the praise for Olby’s older work. Tommy, he’s been this over-the-top for a long time.
Question: Is it because here twice in one week, Olby’s over the top bile isn’t directed at favorite targets of the left like Bush, Rush, Beck, etc., but rather a moderate Republican and a Jewish lawyer?
darii on January 22, 2010 at 7:46 PM
Probably brings in slightly more money than those weekend prison documentaries MSNBC loves to run.
darii on January 22, 2010 at 7:47 PM
Once again, the whole ‘democracy’ canard that the left is so fond of and if they can just convince 50.1% of their worldview. Though it doesn’t happen enough, it is always nice when the republic (and to which this nation actually stands) gets in the way of their agenda.
Sorry about that whole fixed body of laws thing you despise.

Wow, that attack on Abrams is a new low. Even for Olbermann.
Abrams is probably the pre-eminent scholar in the country on the First Amendment. Or one of the top handful.
The man is a serious and fair expert.
At some point – and it’s long past for me – MSNBC will have to decide whether they want to continue to employ this crank.
Wow.

mr1216 on January 22, 2010 at 7:48 PM
I was listening to CSPAN radio this morning and they were discussing the SCOTUS decision.
A guest was explaining why the court reached beyond the immediate case before them and overturned long-standing decisions. The guest said that in an unusual move, the court made inquires to Congress as to where the boundary existed related to banning paid political speech. One question that was asked was “does the 60 day ban innclude books?”. The answer from Congress was “Yes”.
As you might imagine, this caused concern with Justice Kennedy, who had problems with the banning of a book. And the question has valid points, being that what would happen at the local book store should a book be on the shelf in the 60 day period prior to an election? A felony would result. How about a public library? A private library at home? Amazon? Ebay? Digital books? How would the government prevent (read: enforce the law) voters from reading the book while taking a dump the day before an election? It can’t.
Preventing the showing of a film is one thing. Requiring a book to be locked away, nationwide, is a violation of the First Amendment.
Another point both sides seem to be overlooking, and my guess is intentionally:
The concern is that unlimited corporate “political speech” will lead to the corruption of elected officials. I agree. However, if this is the argument, isn’t this an admission that our elected officials can’t be trusted with the power of their office? Aren’t we saying our government can’t control itself against the irresistible forces of corporate money? I would bet that there’s not a single Congress Critter who is not salivating in anticipation of the unlimited dough that is about to arrive.
Well, WTF is happening now?
BobMbx on January 22, 2010 at 7:48 PM

Doesn\’t Keith work for one of the largest corporations in the country? Doesn\’t Keith get paid big bucks to be broadcast nightly criticizing the political views of those with whom he disagrees? Why should certain types of corporations have more power to shape public opinion than other types of corporations?Oh, and Keith… Our country is a Republic… NOT a Democracy… anything that can be done to weaken the strength of the mob is fine by me.
painfulTruthDisciple on January 22, 2010 at 7:53 PM
He’s gone completely off the rails with no hint of straighening out. I don’t care how much you agree with somebody politically, there is no way that any businessman can come to the conclusion that Olberman is an asset an longer.
But maybe his contract is running out soon and he’s already been told it’s not getting renewed, so he’s just letting his true self show.

This guy is a tool. Here’s but one example (per the transcript):
I have to wonder if he had the same aversion to the reduction of (proposed) taxes on Cadillac plans for unions as proposed by the House. Would that not also reduce money spent on the poor? So…

After seeing this guy talk about Scott Brown the other day, the only feeling I can recall it being similar to was one when someone showed me a hardcore disgusting porn flick. That and the TX chainsaw massacre. It was rhetorically vile and filthy what was coming out of KO’s mouth. It wasn’t simply lying, it went way beyond lying. It was simply something that, once you heard it, you just know you should avoid it because it is extraordinarily unhealthy to marinate your brain in. KO is that breed of organism–and I don’t say that because I disagree with him, I say that because it is the truth.

Just my two cents worth, but it seems to me that Olbermann, Maddow and Matthews have taken their cue from the Jay Leno vs. Conan O’Brien verbal nastiness recently. Conan’s ratings went up by 50% during that bit of sparring.
So why not go off the deep end and get MSNBC’s ratings up, however big a fool it makes each one of them appear? I’d be willing to bet that the scuttlebutt behind the scenes of MSNBC is that jobs of all of those jokers, pun intended, including Olbermann, Matthews and Maddow, were being scrutinized closely as well.
