SEIU warns Obama: If ObamaCare doesn’t pass, we might not be there for the midterms

posted at 6:44 pm on January 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

I haven’t seen guys in purple hitting this hard since the Vikings swamped Tony Romo last week in Minneapolis.

“It’s gonna be incredibly difficult to stay focused on national politics if by the end of 2010 we have minimal health care and minimal changes on what’s important to our members,” he said in an interview, ridiculing the emerging Dem approach as “fear masquerading as a strategy.”

Stern unloaded on Dem leaders in resonse to reports today that they’re mulling either a scaled down bill to win GOPers or a broken up bill passed in pieces. His anger suggests Dems risk paying a big price with labor if they fail to figure out how to pass the Senate bill and fix it later, as labor wants.

Stern hinted that if House and Senate members don’t move forward with the Senate bill and some kind of fix, they could see union members spending more time on races for governor, perhaps at the expense of their reelection campaigns. “If something significant doesn’t happen in Congress, I hope the legislators appreciate that there are 37 governors races important to our members,” Stern said suggestively.

Interesting that Stern seems okay with the Senate bill. A few hours ago, DCCC head Chris Van Hollen argued that Reid’s bill is so poisonous politically that the best thing to do is scrap it entirely, have the two chambers co-draft a new, more modest bill, and then ram that through the Senate with reconciliation. The ingredients: “Creating more competition and more consumer choice; taking away special deals for the insurance industry, like the antitrust exemption; and ‘making sure that insurance companies couldn’t deny you coverage at the time you need it the most.’” Which, actually, sounds a lot like what the Times was hearing yesterday about a “pared-down bill.” Question, though: How long is this going to take? Drafting the bill would presumably need a week at least and then reconciliation would bog down for who knows how long in inevitable GOP procedural challenges. Chris Dodd, bizarrely, actually wants them to take a month or even six weeks just to cool down, let things lie, turn their attention to the economy, and then return to O-Care after the shockwaves from Massachusetts have dissipated. But that’s nuts: We’ve written ad nauseam about how nervous vulnerable Dems are about this dragging on much longer, let alone potentially for months more. Dingell, for once, is right — time is of the essence. What I can’t figure out is why Dodd, of all people, would be the messenger for the “go slow” approach. He’s supposed to be the keeper of “Ted Kennedy’s flame” or whatever, and given his retirement, he’ll suffer no consequences for wanting to ram the bill through now. Very odd.

As a tribute to SEIU, the insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and many others who have spent hours leaning on their friend in the White House, I offer you a parting shot from The Onion.

Poor baby. So the pres. promised more than he can deliver to the unions and now he’s in a tough spot. As my dad used to say, I feel for him but I can’t reach him.

SEIU is mostly service workers, and they don’t obey their Union.

Those days are so long gone.

SEIU is controlling Obama through gov’t workers and through contributions.

That’s it.

And MA showed that people are finally absolutely willing to stand up to their own gov’t union staff.

That’s clear.

Next? Contributions.

AnninCA on January 22, 2010 at 7:28 PM

I think it’s about Obama not yet able to find his own compass.

So you agree that he is incompetent.
I agree. The only difference is that this was obvious from the start.

Next blow to SEIU is CA, which has a huge voice in gov’t workers.

However, not all. The unions aren’t all located in SEIU, either.

So, it’s already showing up that they aren’t following the “gameplan.”

They may not quite understand. The Courts have ruled that states HAVE to honor contracts with with the unions.

Even if they can’t.

The public has to move to the place of MA and simply be willing to go broke.

That is the only path left.

It’s garbage and the Dems know it.

SEIU might not like what the Dems are doing, but, they sure as heck wouldn’t like what the Reps would do in their place (even the more liberal ‘Dem-lite’ type Reps).

I’m more than happy to let them cut of their nose to spite their face; however, I really doubt they’ll stay home to prove a point. They have too much money and power riding on the Dem party.

Know what Barry needs to do? Give another speech.

BigAlSouth on January 22, 2010 at 7:25 PM

He is! It’s next week and called the State of the Union. He’s supposed to enumerate all the accomplishments of his administration during the past year and set out the priorities for the year ahead. Healthcare was supposed to be the honored guest with a huge bill signing in the morning followed by his able to hold the law as a political trophy that night. I’m sure there were plans to have Vickie Kennedy sitting next to the First Lady as Obama gushed over Teddy’s legacy moving forward with Martha Coakley…..

Instead, Obama’s got nothing. The job picture has gotten worse We’ve had a recent domestic terrorist attempt the response of which was completely botched by an administration on vacation. Obamacare is dead as a result of a single resounding electoral defeat. The economy is stagnant and the market is in freefall.

It will be interesting to see how Obama cleverly crafts his lies to make the claim that he’s been an unqualified success (a B+ effort). It will be interesting to see how the Dems overreact to each and every applause line. It will be interesting to see just how polite the GOP is during these lies. This speech will be better than any crappy star-studded telethon to help out Haiti

have a question. Why is it that the health insurance and pharma companies are being vilified by the Left but that is who was hosting the fundraiser in D.C. for Ms. Coakley? I assume that the industries are just covering their butts no matter what the outcome is but why is the association evil for Republicans.

Cindy Munford on January 22, 2010 at 7:23 PM

Well, my own answer is that you are caught up in “tit-for-tat” thinking.

The commentary is lagging behind real issues.

The voters have moved PAST commentary, beyond whose to blame, and beyond partisanship talk.

In short, it doesn’t matter.

It’s the same reason why blaming Bush isn’t working. Yes, we do understand that Bush’s policies were as much or more responsible than anything.

But I personally do not care about assigning blame.

I do care about the solutions.

It’s the same reason why blaming Bush isn’t working. Yes, we do understand that Bush’s policies were as much or more responsible than anything.

This blame-shifting crap is a tactic of diverting anger common to agitators. You see, agitators could never be responsible for the plight of others, noooo, it’s always “the Man” who’s keeping his thumb on the poor, the sick, the middle class. As long as Bush is used as a proxy for this entity, then the 0ne can act the agitator, to stir up rage, to stir up dissent, to foment class warfare, and to appear as the deus ex machina to save the day from the “Man.”

He could care less if he loses the House or the Senate. Why? Because it positions himself perfectly as the underdog, the oppressed, and emerge as the leader of such. His speech today shows that. He loses one Senate seat, and he’s chomping at the bit to get agitating like he owns zer0 senate seats. How foolish is that?

Screw the Unions… They want special treatment, to the detriment of the non-union working American. As far as the workforce in America is concerned, they are the minority, yet demand a seat at the table, while excluding us, and making us pay for their benefits. Screw them!
I’m an Automotive Technician, hardly wealthy, I do well because I work my ass off. I am almost to the point that If it’s union made, I won’t buy it. They are not in it for America, they’re in it for themselves.
I will buy a Honda, Toyota, Nissan, built here, by Americans, without the help of unions. I will shop at Walmart, I know that Chinese products don’t help us, but our unions won’t help us, they want theirs, they want me to foot the bill. They want more, even if it means I have less, they don’t care, nor do I. They may be able to force me to pay for their benefits, but they can’t force me to by their product.
Andy Stern, and his brother at ACORN, can both kiss my ass.

It’s posturing. The unions are not going to abandon the Dems in 2010 or 2012. Not only do they have nowhere else to go in many states like MI, the unions and the Democrat machine are one and the same.

These little temper tantrums should be viewed as performance art by the leadership making healthy six figure salaries. They need to assure their membership that they are sticking it to the system to get even more benefits for the workers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stern coordinated this with Obama on one of his many personal visits to the West Wing.

Starring Andy Stern as a progressive labor union enforcer with a nasty temper, the new documentary film will also feature Barry Obama as his loyal, but dysfunctional, comedic sidekick.

According to “must remain anonymous” sources, Moore is reportedly having difficulty securing additional cast members from the Dem labor pool he has relied on in the past.

Thank you, Barnes. Never heard of that clown. But now I know.

Lanceman on January 22, 2010 at 8:31 PM

Advance apologies if this has been touched on,as I have no time for the entire thread.

This may be a hill they are willing to die on. A massive defeat for Obamacare could be the death of the latest socialist impulse in America. Without massive government intervention, the retirement promises made by the state governments and the unions will lead to bankruptcies (states and unions). As states trim their commitments, unions will become less powerful.

This is an existential fight for them

phineas on January 22, 2010 at 8:54 PM

I really didn’t think I would see the day ONE union could demand the remaking of one sixth of the economy.

This SEIU is a f*cking criminal enterprise that should be shut down. This Andy Stern guy talks like friggin Hitler.

Conan on January 22, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Ooops! Unfunded union benefits strike fear in union leaders’ hearts…

obladioblada on January 22, 2010 at 8:59 PM

I do care about the solutions.

He’s equally as likely to listen to you or me as Ann…that is to say, not at all.

Dark-Star on January 22, 2010 at 9:15 PM

I have a question.

AnninCa’s response in quotes below, with my comments…

Well, my own answer is that you are caught up in “tit-for-tat” thinking.

Or, Cindy is looking for a fair and consistent standard to be applied to both sides.

The commentary is lagging behind real issues.

The voters have moved PAST commentary, beyond whose to blame, and beyond partisanship talk.

Or, the voters have expressed their well placed anger squarely at the feet of those who are to blame.

In short, it doesn’t matter.

Except that it does matter. We conservatives need to continue to insist that the scales get and stay balanced; that a single set of behavioral standards apply to both parties.

It’s the same reason why blaming Bush isn’t working. Yes, we do understand that Bush’s policies were as much or more responsible than anything.

Non-sequitor

But I personally do not care about assigning blame.

I do care about the solutions.

As do we; conservatives have offered consistent solutions to the specific areas of health-care-cost-containment that need to be addressed. These solutions have been offered on this and other fora too often to repeat.

massrighty on January 22, 2010 at 9:16 PM

Before he creates health care legislation (he didn’t), Obama consults the “folks” at SEIU and Andy Stern. Please, they are cut of the same liberal cloth and Stern has no where else to go. (Although it was wonderful to see the SEIU purple shirts supporting Scott Brown)

Who visited the White House the most during the first year of Obama’s only term? Could it be, Andy Stern?

Best line ever – PAY THE VOTERS! Love The Onion, love it!

redwhiteblue on January 22, 2010 at 9:31 PM

SEIU represents a segment of the labor force that does not, normally, qualify for health benefits on the job. As such, it would be a huge victory if Stern can coerce Obama into getting some form of national health program going, even a minimally basic one that could be built upon in the years down the road. The Democrats are famous for “toe-in-the-door” legislation like that. And it the union’s viability, and possibly Stern’s, for years to come.

In the case of unions, it simply does not matter to people like Stern who negotiate new benefits that could kill an entire industry. All one has to do is read the history of what destroyed industries like the steel mills, rail transport, and even the air-travel industry, to know that the unions killed them. In the case of SEIU, it will be the American taxpayers who will be burdened and driven into national bankruptcy. No problem, they’ll deal with that ten, twenty, fifty years down the road.

KendraWilder on January 22, 2010 at 9:41 PM

Did not read all of the comments so my apologizes if this was already said…

BS he is just saying that and does not really mean it. What is he going to do? What can he do? Who can SEIU turn to for support?

Bring it on Andy ditch Obama then what?

What are you going to do bleed on me?

F15Mech on January 22, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Don’t most Union members have health insurance already? Someone clue me in as to why Stern is pushing for HCR if his peeps don’t need it?
CCRWM on January 22, 2010 at 7:49 PM

Stern and company are salivating at the prospect of enrolling or coercing health care and insurance firms’ workers into the SEIU ranks. Look at what they pulled (in MI) or tried to pull (in IL) with home health care workers, many of whom were relatives of the persons being cared for. “Persuasion of power”, baby!

ya2daup on January 22, 2010 at 11:47 PM

Can we take bets on whether B+ Hopenchange Obama will wear a tie to the SOTUA? What about buttoning his shirt? What are the odds on that one?

RachDubya on January 22, 2010 at 11:56 PM

Hmmm I just do not recall Andy Stern or any Union Member or Acorn for that matter coming out & being so vocal (see : threatining) during the Bush /Cheny reigng….hmmmm

What I can’t figure out is why Dodd, of all people, would be the messenger for the “go slow” approach. He’s supposed to be the keeper of “Ted Kennedy’s flame” or whatever, and given his retirement, he’ll suffer no consequences for wanting to ram the bill through now. Very odd

Follow the money sonny!

chickasaw42 on January 23, 2010 at 12:48 AM

turn their attention to the economy

Oh please no. Everything they turn their attention to turns to crap. Besides, they already took one run at the economy with the porkulus bill, I would hate to see what else they could do if they really focused on it.

tommer74 on January 23, 2010 at 2:23 AM

Y’know, if you piss off reasonable citizens, they vote you out of office.

I think you can imagine what happens if you piss off radicals, revolutionaries and union thugs who don’t get what you promised them. Sort of like being an underground boxer in the movie “Snatch” and not taking a dive for Brick Top. 0bama is riding a very hungry tiger. He better hold on tight.

J.J. Sefton on January 23, 2010 at 6:49 AM

the biggest news out of MASS was the Dems lost HALF the union votes to Brown, see WSJ AFLCIO poll, same thing happened in ur primaries, the big union bosses told the rank and file to vote Obama and they voted Hill anyway, thus we won OH PA to Teh Ones chagrin

same thing will happen in the midterms

union leadership is bluffing they cant control the rank and file anymore

ginaswo on January 23, 2010 at 8:31 AM

“SEIU warns Obama: If ObamaCare doesn’t pass, we might not be there for the midterms”

Promises, promises! Oh please say you won’t be there!

hopefloats on January 23, 2010 at 8:31 AM

What do they care, they don’t pay taxes either way. And…that’s an idle threat anyway since they have no where else to turn.

jeanie on January 23, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Wouldn’t you just love to be Obama’s State of the Union speechwriters right now? They have nothing positive to talk about.

Ozwitch on January 22, 2010 at 7:49 PM

I expect about 49 minutes of Obama self-love, complete with wet wipes and afterglow.

SKYFOX on January 23, 2010 at 10:18 AM

I honestly need someone who understands this to explain a few things to me:

1. Unions threaten not to support Obama/Dems. What is to stop Obama/Dems from responding “So what?”

2. I’m a teacher and I refuse to join my union. ONE of my arguments is that since unions have become almost indistinguishable from the Democrat party, why do the Dems need to do anything substantive for them?

3. Where do unions go? To the Repubs whom they’ve attacked for decades?

Anyone who understands this better than I do? I really think I must be missing something.
