Quotes of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on January 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Congressional Democrats — stunned out of silence by Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts — say they’re done swallowing their anger with President Barack Obama and ready to go public with their gripes.

“If the sentiment isn’t quite heads-must-roll, it’s getting there

“‘The administration has got to be in the forefront now, instead of throwing some meat on the track and seeing what the House can work out,’ said New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell, expressing the frustrations also voiced by about two dozen Democratic elected officials and aides interviewed by POLITICO…

“‘What happened was they got so caught up in all these other issues like health care and cap and trade and all this other stuff, that because of that they maybe didn’t put enough focus on the economy,’ said Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, a moderate who represents a conservative, rural district hard-hit by the economic crisis.”

***
“Speaking broadly: In the 2006 and 2008 elections, and at some point during the past decade, the ancestral war between Democrats and the Republicans began to take on a new look. If you were a normal human sitting at home having a beer and watching national politics peripherally, as normal people do until they focus on an election, chances are pretty good you came to see the two major parties not as the Dems versus the Reps, or the blue versus the red, but as the Nuts versus the Creeps. The Nuts were for high spending and taxing and the expansion of government no matter what. The Creeps were hypocrites who talked one thing and did another, who went along on the spending spree while lecturing on fiscal solvency.

“In 2008, the voters went for Mr. Obama thinking he was not a Nut but a cool and sober moderate of the center-left sort. In 2009 and 2010, they looked at his general governing attitudes as reflected in his preoccupations—health care, cap and trade—and their hidden, potential and obvious costs, and thought, ‘Uh-oh, he’s a Nut!’

“Which meant they were left with the Creeps.”

***
“Instead of building trust in government, the Democrats have magnified distrust. The country already believed Washington is out of touch with its core concerns. So while most families were concerned about jobs, Democrats in Washington spent nine months arguing about health care. The country was already tired of self-serving back-room deals, so the Democrats negotiated a series of dirty deals with the pharmaceutical industry, the unions and certain senators. Americans already felt Washington doesn’t understand their fears and insecurities. So at the moment when economic insecurity was at its peak, the Democrats in Washington added another layer of insecurity by threatening to change everything at once.

“Instead of building a new majority, the Democrats have set off a distrust insurrection (which is not the same as a conservative insurrection). Republicans are enraged. Independents are furious. Democrats are disheartened. Health care reform is brutally unpopular. Even voters in Massachusetts decided it was time to send a message.”

Politico:

At the moment, the whole cacophonous crew seems to be united by the fear that no one is safe if a tea party-backed Republican can win the Senate seat the late Ted Kennedy held for nearly 50 years.

Power to the People. Thank you Tea Party Patriots! You’ve got them shaking in fear!

“We all pretty much knew for sure we were going to lose Massachusetts,” one person in attendance told POLITICO on Wednesday. “And yet, last night and this morning, we had absolutely no message guidance from the White House, [the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee] or [the Democratic National Committee]. There was no leadership. …”

How dare our Democrat leaders not tell us what to think??? Hey, Tea Partiers, you have one big advantage over them: you actually think for yourselves!

OmahaConservative on January 22, 2010 at 11:59 PM

I think Obama and Pelosi unknowingly saved the GOP from itself.

When Obama took office, Republicans were lining up to work with him! They wanted to prove to America they could be bipartisan!
But, instead of reaching out to them and bringing them along, Pelosi shut the door in their face! Obama said “We won!” and closed them out! They had no where to go! It was the best thing to happen to them because they lacked the courage to stand up to Obama’s agenda!

The progressive fantasy of voting for the hipper younger brownish guy over the duller older greyish guy was all the burbling, coelecancth-level Leftoid brain needed to excuse its dangerous and fatuous experiment with:

Tyro Neophyte Doofus for President

in the middle of the most dangerous war- against Islamic Imperialism- that our nation has faced since the Revolution that forged us.

Let the Dems learn that inexperience and naivete may be alluring in the abstract, but can be deadly in action.

And that most people in the country know better than to waste hundreds of millions of bucks on a pre-decreed show trial for KSM in NYC ~as jihadists continue to strike at us, from Major Traitor Hasan at Fort Hood to the Christmas Day boxer bomber over Detroit.

The Olympian styrofoam columns of the campaign are compacted in some lonesome dumpster.

Obama couldn’t hector his way out of a damp paper bag.

And you cannot charm psychotic terrorists with sap.

K-hammer was brutal! I mean yeah a great week and all, but I gotta put up with all these moping libs out here and that shjt gets old.

abobo on January 22, 2010 at 10:46 PM

I don’t mind it. I even kind of enjoy it, without, you know, rubbing it in on them. (Not that they’d ever return that favor.)

My particular crew is very left, and thus very, very bitter that the world doesn’t have enough sense to see things the Way They Are and insist on Voting Against Their Own Interests!!!!!11111eleventy!

They’ve spent most of their time coming up with reasons that they tell each other are why Brown won, and why it can’t be that people don’t want the nutty spending, the apology tours, the cosseting of terrorists, or anything like that, and most CERTAINLY has absolutely NOTHING to do with the health care bill.

As Washington Democrats themselves are starting to say it does, I think I’ll be hearing a little less on that score.

Mainly, though, we’ve dodged at least that particular bullet, by miracle and by grace of God, and that’s enough for me. They can rattle on all they want. I like to hope it’s their death rattle.

Alana on January 23, 2010 at 2:24 AM

It’s probably worth noting that this week will most likely be looked back upon as the cause of another recession. As in the second dip in the “double-dip” Nouriel Roubini has been predicting.

I loved the Dr. K clip. He’s had a few excellent remarks this week, but the stunner for me was Peggy Noonan waking up and calling Bozo a “Nut”.

She’s been very supportive of the guy, after all, but not anymore apparently. There really isn’t much difference between Him and Chavez.

Syndicated columnist and commentator Charles Krauthammer spoke about the first year of the Obama administration. Looks like the video is already up on the website, if you miss it.

It is great to see Obama’s head handed to him on so many different levels.

BottomLine5 on January 23, 2010 at 9:23 AM

I go along with the sentiment that this Mass election is one of the best things to happen to Obama. He is being handed a golden opportunity to recognize that he has been going egregiously astray – and to correct it before November – an opportunity Bill Clinton almost certainly wishes he had had.

It is a bit frightening, therefore, to see a couple of Obama’s recent reaction-speeches. Rather than correct himself, he seems bent on carrying the radical agenda further and more aggressively. He is beginning to look a bit unhinged – and some of his tone reminds me of the final Nixon days; almost a bunker mentality.

Rahm Emanuel, in my opinion, has been poison. He has steered the wrong course for the President, and I believe he is now hunkered down, and advocating a still more disastrous course.

The next few weeks will be fascinating – starting Wed night with SOTU.

“‘What happened was they got so caught up in all these other issues like health care and cap and trade and all this other stuff, that because of that they maybe didn’t put enough focus on the economy,’ said Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson

No sorry, the focus was and is on the economy. The idea is to destroy it while misdpirecting from behind a do-gooder screen. Petersen’s statement is either part of the continued misdirection of the left’s we-hear-you chorus, or is as authentically and unreelectably naive as a key chunk of the electorate used to be.

I don’t usually join Facebook groups, this is one gladly signed on to.

Thanks canopfor, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family this weekend.

“Congressional Democrats — stunned out of silence by…”

STOP!

How does one get stunned out of silence?

If I am asleep while driving 70 mph down the interstate highway system, stunning me into ‘consciousness’ seams to be a little bit late in the process…

I do love Krauthammer. Took him long enough to recognize the missing intelligence of Obama, though. All is forgiven, because he now mocks the stupid specimen of a man like no one else. I hang on to every word that he utters and every word that he types.

If he’s so smart, why did it take him so long to see what so many of us saw at the outset? Are you suggesting we were just reactionary and got lucky this time? If so, I disagree. Many of us recognize a phony-baloney, plastic banana, good-time rock and roller (thanks, Rush) when we see one. Why didn’t he? I won’t automatically discount anything CK has to say from now on, but I will be much more skeptical than I have been in the past.

Obama’s attack on the banks this week is a sign of things to come. He knows he is going down in both power, polls and eventually the election.

The mask is off and he is in ‘if I am going down, I am taking them with me’ mode.

This is going to get real ugly in the coming months.

tatersalad on January 23, 2010 at 10:45 AM

Hammer said he couldn’t remember having a better week since he went to Spring Break in Med School and he can’t remember that. **snort**

Problem is, the “them” he’s taking down is the US capitalist economic system and every freaking one of us along with it.

Krauthammer is on right now on C-SPAN, speaking at the Heritage Foundation about 0Bama’s first year.

Krauthamme’rs description of the Nobel Prize committee: “Overdressed and Underemployed”.

I think you’re right; Got to pander to his base.
If you consider yourself disenfranchised, he will pander to you.
His administration is built on speeches to his disenfranchised masses.

Cybergeezer on January 23, 2010 at 11:15 AM

We have to participate in the primary elections to get rid of the hypocrites among the Republicans.

Problem is anyone who paid any attention knew the Democrats have been a stupid choice for a long, long time.

A majority of the country wasn’t paying attention.

Good rule of thumb, if you’re opinions fall on the same side as the lazy, criminals, dictators, and yes, young college students, you might want to reconsider your position. (I’m not exaggerating)

I’m not one to talk because I just misused the word “you’re” in my previous post, but I think Krauthammer was sacrificing good judgement at the altar of Political Correctness, it seems no effective person is totally immune from it. And it seems like being skeptical is usually a good thing as long as it doesn’t paralyze further action indefinitely.

The left has no “one” person to destroy concerning the Tea Parties.

Sarah, Glenn, Rush, etc. are not the “head” of the movement.

It is fun to watch them try to identify and destroy (alinsky style) such
an organic group…..heh

nondhimmie on January 23, 2010 at 12:46 PM

Krauthammer is so brilliant. So is VDH.

My take on both is that, as independent thinkers and decent people, they gave Obama some time and benefit of the doubt. Longer than I did.

But having been convinced, both have been very effective and right on the money. We are fortunate to have such minds in the public arena. Both help clarify, and particularly Krauthammer has a way of being so succinct and pithy, distilling matters to the core.

I wonder if we will ever be large enough to have a HotAir convention?

Cindy Munford on January 23, 2010 at 9:49 AM

If so, I’m in. We could have special tables for trolls, and put Allah in a cage – for his own protection, and we could have middle-of- the-night speakers for the insomniacs, and perhaps some tutorial classes for geezers like me to learn how to use all the links on HA. It would be great.
